  • Mystras (UNESCO) is an ASTONISHING abandoned Medieval Town located approximately 5 km from Sparta, 40km from Kalamata and 180km from Athens in the Peloponnese, Greece.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was abandoned after an uprising by the Greek population against the Ottoman rule in 1770.
It was the capital of Laconia county, prior to the establishment of the modern Sparta in 1834, and was considered to be the premier renaissance town in Greece, prior to it's destruction.
Established in 1240 by the Frankish the town rapidly grew around the castle and became an incredible power in the region, with learning and scholarly activities. Rulers from the town when on to become kings in the Holy Roman Empire until the Ottomans took control in about 1450.
This is a site that you must visit if you are in the area, visiting Sparta, or travelling down to the Southern Peloponnese, Kalamata or the Mani Peninsula.
Combined with Sparta it would also be a great day trip from Athens or Kalamata, if you are driving, or able to get a coach.

This place so exceeds Sparta. We covered both in one vlog a couple months ago. You did a great job with this. We are excited, as a father-son team of Anthropologists to be doing a World tour of 390 UNESCO World Heritage sites including this one soon. Cheers and thanks for sharing your footage of this amazing place. I hope you consider sending us any recommendations you have and let us know if you want to link up for possible future collabs. Cheers! - Turtle and Bear

Oh Mystras is massively underrated and without question better than Sparti. Much more impressive, interesting and a huge medieval site. I loved Mystras far more than Delphi for example. Wow!

@@chrisofmelbourne87 I did find it to be breathtaking, however, Delphi was amazing too. Enjoy your travels and please keep in touch. We are trying to develop a network of friends on here to collaborate with on our journey and other ventures.

The history of Mystras is amazing too. I love these remote semi-abandonned sites.

Plenty, but usually the obscure or less popular ones and scattered all over the place.
The oracle of Trophonius, the Necromanteion of Acheron, Dodona, the bridges of Epirus, Mycenae (my fav place of all).
There's also a site called Map of Greek Castles. It's a map of every castle with photos and descriptions.

@@Not-Impressed..1821 Thank you, I will research, I have a day trip to Mycenae and Argos, if you are interested. I also did a vid on Tyrins and the Davelis Caves.

Had to comment a second time. Doing what I can to encourage the algorithm :-) Those frescoes in the monastery are really stunning. And the last view from the top of the castle, and the ruin... so sad and yet beautiful like nothing else. Why isn't this more famous? Ok, let's keep it between us 🙂

Thank you, I wish there were more gems like this one, would make doing these vids easy! Patras and Corinth soon I think... though I have yet to do either, but carnival season in Patras :) Maybe some islands when it gets warmer. I do need subscriptions, the further I go, the more this hobby costs!

    My ancestral village
Both the old town and the new town
My grandfather was moved on from within the city walls after world war Two with the last of the dwellers to the village below
You did an excellent job covering it but you need to go back and do it again!
There's so much more! That was a bit rushed
That settlement was sacked after the Russian inspired Orloff revolt in the 1770s and then again after the Greek revolution at around 1825 when the ottomans returned from the war of independence of 1821
It's peak was the late Roman period
The very last Roman Emperor was coronated at st Demetrius where you can still see a couple of purple tiles around the place of the coronation before he hurried back to Constantinople for the last stand
The eastern Roman Empire began with Constantine the great and ended with Constantine the great who was the despot of mystras !
The Roman Empire began with Gaius Julius Caesar and ended with Constantine Paleologos Dragas in May 29 1453
Each year on this day a special memorial is held for the last Emperor and also the Princess of all cities Constantinople

Oh thank you! We are looking for places to visit in December/January. The big draw is Meteora for a few days but are wondering what else is relatively close to Meteora or Athens. We have explored Athens in previous visits and although an island sounds lovely, we’re not sure that transportation options and weather on an island during December/January would be okay. (Not looking for beach weather, just pleasant for exploring).
