- How do hornets, wasps, and yellow jackets make their nests?
Using a combination of wood and their saliva, the insects construct their nest and the outer paper layers. These nests, depending the species, can get quite large in size. In this video, the bald face hornet nest was removed from a client's property in Downingtown Pennsylvania. I would describe the size as slightly larger than a basketball.
The nests will be abandoned in the winter so that is great time to hunt for your own hornet nest. Make sure you collect the nest after a period of cold weather to ensure that the colony is gone for the year.
To preserve the nest you can simply store the nest in an area that is protected from the elements. If left untouched and protected from the weather, the nest can survive for quite a long time as it is. I coated this nest with a spray on wood lacquer to firm the nest up a bit. I intend to display this nest at various events throughout the year and wanted to make the nest a bit more durable for travel.

They’re kind of cute when they’re just quietly munchin’ on wood trying to build a home.
why don't you let em munch on your wood??

Ended up on a google deep dive wondering what hornets nests looked like and how they’re removed. Lead time to this video which was informative and well laid out.

They really are such unique pieces of nature's art, thank you for sharing!
Bruv there stinging you and breaking property but true
I find this all very fascinating. Thanks for explaining how they build their nests and what material they use. My husband and I just found a huge hornet's nest over our porch.
Thank you for making this video, my son was so fascinated. He asked me how they make their nests so of course I had no idea so I googled it lol and found you. Thank you for the educational information for us both!
Thank you so much for this video. Very helpful and informative as I found a huge nest in one of the tree near my house.
Very educational video. This should definitely have more views. Thanks man 💪🏿💯

I was trimming a tree today for my business, and ran into one of these Nest.
They are absolutely beautifully made.
Unfortunately, I was stung a few times on top my head.

I was so interested on this topic cause we found multiple old and broken in our attic and I was thrilled to know how and from where they build it and what do they use.
I learned something new today. Thanks!
Very well done! So educational 👌
Beautiful. Nice video.
Very informative video bro, thank you
Very cool, but also terrifying.
Thanks for the education - very interesting and that's awesome what you'll do. You couldn't pay me enough.
Fazinating video. Thanks 😊
Great video thank you for the information...wondering what you used for the lacquer on the nest?
I just wiped out two of these bad boys while they were in the middle of building nests on separate ends of my house lol thank you for this video though. They are pests but they’re incredible creatures huh
Pretty hard working and creative creatures
Great video. A+ 10/10
How long does it take to make a nest?
BITE BITE BITE BITE BITE BITE MUNCH CHOMP
Those things are surprisingly chill when they're away from their nest. D:
Cool video 👍
never even thought about going out in the dead winter and looking for a nest.
Thank you for your video! Is the nest empty during the winter?
For dried flowers, I lightly hairspray them A few times letting them completely dry in between times so as to not get them too wet all at once. Would it also work to hairspray fluffy papery stuff to make it just a little stiffer?
I would be careful bringing a nest into the house. When I was 9 years old, my grade 4 class did not have a bees' nest. So we found a big one, and it was November or December and we had lots of -20C (Sub zero Fahrenheit nights). I brought it with me to school the next day and luckily it was in a bag because they woke up on the school bus.
Dang lol why was it with u
Do you place the nest safely somewhere if there are larvae?Wasps are great pollinators,We need them.
Good job 👍
I remember when i was little i thought hornets were the color of the Charlotte Hornets jersey uniforms
please algorithm do not recommend me bug videos for watching this i was just curious at 3am
3:10 I JUMPED
Great video.
Thanks!
Good video
I have one on our land in Wisconsin and there’s no bees going in or out anymore I would like to take it down but I heard the queen is still in there is that true?
this whole time i just thought they went to home depot and stole building materials
Hornets support small business and would NEVER shop at those national chains lol!
@@prudentialpestsolutions6617 For the past hour I have been getting notifications from my backyard secure alarm. It's hornets or wasps playing on my camera, or building a nest on it. I went outside to zoom in for a picture and I looks like they are spraying something on my camera. I also see what looks like a web with a bunch of eggs or dots on it. I am running to Lowes now.
cool video thanks
Wild
what does it cost to have a nest removed? (in Brooklyn)
Is the one ur touching alive or is it just a model?
Cute
Interesting
Cool
What happens if you leave it? I have a huge one and I'm not being stung. I assume they have a function, but what is their function? And where are they going to go in the Winter?
They'll eventually die out
I've had a huge one in my garden all summer...not been stung...not of my cats, dog, ponies been stung...I guess if provoked they might react but they seem very peaceful and happy.
I saw a yellowjacket outside my window which is the entire reason I looked this up
I hope y'all put them somewhere so other bees can use them
Do they secrete like some sort of fluid that hardens and creates the nest
They're basically like a paper factory but much more compact
We took their trees, now they shewing our fences.
Bald Faced Hornet
This guy makes you wanna work for him
Is true baldfaced hornets forage for food near their nests? Last years I saw in my backyard one looking in the grass, one on dog poop, and another one in my bushes, and another one on my wooden fence. I looked in the tree there it was a big paper ball!! In the middle of may I've seen queen yellow jackets and queen bald faced hornets looking for a nest, going around eves of houses. But in June you dont see any workers yet foraging for food until mid July, and more into the months progress. This year I've seen none on my backyard in fact all year. Does it mean no nests near by?
I see them all the time in summer but NEVER see a nest. I study them
But why he just be picking it up like dat?
Awwwww
🐝🐝 I'm probably the only one that sleeps with hornets. I study them and have a bottle of 4 by my bed. I feed them 🍑 and they are thriving. My 3 cats also love watching them
OHHHHHH so they chew the wood then mix it with saliva to turn it into a pulp okayy
No offense, not gonna lie, you remind me of shoenice.
Im high as hell idk how i ended up watching this
I just did eliminate European hornet nest. First time did see the hornet queen. Big scarry bug indeed. About 1,8 inch long. They made a nest in a wooden bird house near bee hive, so to protect the bees hornets have to die. Hate theese bugs
I had no professional equipment excep the bee hat. Did dress up in two layers of jeans two jackets two pairs of rubber gloves and bee hat and a baseball cap on top of it. I made sure my outfit has no holes where the hornets can get in. Did put head lamp on cause it was dark. The only poison I found in garage was few year old spray can of flea poison. Got ladder and went up to the infested bird house. Hornets at night always have guards near the nest which instantly alert the sleeping hornets and get agressive. I did spray the whole poison can into the bird house and stuffed the exit hole with a plastic bag. Then did bring down the bird house from the tree. After a while I did open the exit hole and first who came out was the queen. Shes like twice bigger than the rest of the hornets. Of course She got some more poison in the face and I closed the nest exit, but kept the queen ad trophy. Tomorrow that old bird house will burn with gasoline. Cant reuse a bird house if its poisoned. I really enjoy destroying these nests. It gives adrenaline cause before I have been stung by hornets and it hurts. It even gives You a fever if 2 or 3 hornets sting You.
Hate you guys for removing and destroying, but a great info series.
To the person that’s reading this:
You’re very intelligent and adorable human!
Stay healthy in quarantine
My dream is to have 1k. I been struggling to get there!! 🙏
They all work together in harmony.until you came to destroy there nest for a video.
I wouldn't destroy the nest let nature be
Who cares about annoying ass bugs we don’t need these deadly pests besides bees
