This Bald Faced Hornets nest is 4-5 feet tall, taller than many adult humans! You can measure it against the 12 inch rows of siding upon which it is built. The nests grow this way when they are knocked down without being killed. The queen has the nest re-built and they bridge the walls all the way up to the soffit

Apparently these are called "stovepipe" nests. I've done a few of these, but never one that tall.

@@TheBeeMan From what I understand when the comb set detaches from the substrate, the wasps build downwards and the comb set keeps getting pushed down. Nests attached to a metal surface do not bind well.

@@TheBeeMan I had one of those large paper wasp hives inside an exterior wall that had no insulation in it in a house up in Oregon. I was doing a complete remodel on the house and had no idea the hive was there. While doing demo I pulled off a 4' x 8' sheet of the old paneling on the inside of the house. When I did that it pulled off one complete side of the nest with it and exposed the inside of the nest... which had 13 very precise "levels" to it. It was really impressive...very cool. Because the nest was built between the studs it was the full 16" wide and 4" thick. The top of the nest was about a foot from the ceiling and 2 feet from the floor so it was every bit of 5 feet long. Thankfully the nest had been abandoned years earlier but it had been perfectly preserved inside that wall and was an amazing thing to see. It was shaped just like the nest in this video. As a side note that same house main floor beams had been completely bored into by carpenter bees. The beams showed no evidence of an infestation on the outside of the beams whatsoever ..but when I had to cut thru them they looked like swiss cheese inside. The holes were side by side and round as a pencil that tunneled the entire 30 foot length of those beams. That too was an amazing sight. I had no idea there was such a thing as carpenter bees. They're a large black bee. I found out later they don't actually eat the wood..they just bore it out to make a hive. Go figure. There were a few dead ones inside the beams and an old timer told me thats what they were. Live n' learn eh!

HI Herc, so i had a question........Ok so you don't actually kill the hornets, just destroy their nests? Won't they just come back and build another nest like wasp do? I've destroyed wasp nests and they just come right back year after year. I have to kill the little buggers in order to get rid of them.

A few years ago my dad got stung in the head by four hornets while he was chopping some wood. After 10 minutes he collapsed and started to vomit, lost his sight and went to anaphylaxis. He was completely alone in the woods except for our dog Dero that started to bark and never left him. Thank god my dad always hated everything that was even slightly "digital" and still had one of those old Nokias with real buttons. He started to count the numbers with his thumb and manged to call an ambulance. They found him because they could hear Dero barking in the woods and saved him with an adrenaline injection. He was really lucky, these bastards are really dangerous.
Also, Dero died a couple of years later. RIP fella, and thanks for saving dad.

Those Hornets can find another place to live maybe at your house but not mine. This is why we have exterminators. What these hornets do is make paper, eat and multiply and they have a hell of a sting. The Sting is like heating up a 16 penny nail red hot and stick it on your arm for 2 seconds. It will take a week or so for it to heal. As long as you don't get stung by 5 of the killer Hornets 1 to 10 times in one minute. They are aggressive so don't swat at them. Watch the children. One sting can put you into shock. It's not like a honey bee or a wasp.

Hornets are the worst for pain. Their venum has actually less total toxins then a honey 🐝, but the toxins that hornets do have are the most dangerous. Then comes Wasps & Yellow Jackets. They also have very bad toxins, but as same with hornets, they have less of a total toxic cocktail then a honey 🐝
And do think of it as an actual cocktail.
The honey bee is like a 5oz Long Island Ice Tea. Many different liquor ingredients. But 1 drink won't mess u up if you're an average sized male.
A hornets venum is like a 5 oz glass of moonshine. Only 1 liquor ingredient, but 1 glass will mess u up silly.
But hornets & wasps aren't really the problem with us. They make their nests up high off the ground (mostly) and they are only concerned with hunting for other insects to eat. They want nothing to do with us. And actually, wasps & hornets often give u a warning "buzz by" before they sting to warn u that you're too close to their nest. Wasps give the most deliberate warnings. They often literally fly about 1-2 ft from ur face & hover up & down a few times to back u off. And u better back off though! Lol.
The biggest problem with the stinging insects are those nasty, mean, hot tempered Yellow Jackets.(close relative of the hornet). There's actually 3 types of yellow jackets & one of the types is the 'bald faced hornet' which is actually technically not a hornet but in fact a yellow jacket, but yet called the bald faced hornet. Lol. Very confusing.
But here in Pennsylvania we just simply call those "bald faced hornets" by what they really are,, which is 'Yellow Jacket Hornets'
The difference between hornets & yellow jackets is their length. Yellow jackets are smaller then hornets, but the "Yellow Jacket Hornets' are similar in length to hornets, but slimmer. Confusing, yes.
Yellow jackets are by far the ones most responsible for people getting stung.
I'd say yellow jackets are responsible for 90-95% of all stings here in America.
There are many problems with the yellow jackets. One problem is because they build their nests in the ground or near areas where most people navigate/work. Another problem is that they don't lose their stingers when they sting. So they can sting u over & over again. Another problem is that hornet & wasp colonies are small. Hornets may get a couple thousand in general population areas, whereas the yellow jacket nest that your landscaper told u you have in your back yard has anywhere from 5-15,000 "colony members"
Another problem is that yellow jackets also like the things we eat. That's why they're always flying around our garbage cans & always hovering over our drinks when we're outside eating & drinking.
Whereas wasps & hornets only sting to defend their nest (whenever u swat them away, they simply fly away), yellow jackets can sting if u piss them off for any reason. They give no warning. And I've personally been stung for no reason when I was several feet from any nest they had. Just last year I parked my car at a friend's house & noticed a yellow jacket nest 4 feet from my driver side door. As soon as I shut the door to get away from the nest a dam yellow jacket stung me twice in my ear! That's a bad place to be stung. My ear swelled up & the pressure it caused made me feel like I had an ear ache for several hours.
      SOB yellow jackets!
They are literally SOB's because they're all the queens offspring.

@@flaccidego4291 you are right about the Hornets and the wasp. They will try to warn you off buy buzzing around your head so you will see them. How great is that, a warning Buzz before the sting LOL. I have found myself not really paying attention and them buzzing around a few times. I've had a few hit me without a sting. That was all the warning I need to get out of there. But that was wasp and not a hornet. The warning sound of the hornet you would have to be deaf to not hear them. If you have a three-second warning Buzz, you just might Escape without a sting. You may walk away for 5 seconds then run away for 10 to 15 seconds you should be far enough. But if not you better keep running. If you can run through the heavy brush is a lot better than very few trees or around the house. Don't ever think they can't follow you or see you. I found that brake cleaner containing Perchloroethylene (PCE or "perc", tetrachloroethylene) works wonders on wasps. CRC Brakleen is made from this stuff. As soon as droplets of spray hit them they fall dead to the ground. The effect is virtually instant. Other formulations of carb cleaner or brake cleaner work, but not nearly as quickly. Soapy water in a pump spray bottle also works well. It plugs the pores through which they breathe. It’s cheap and environmentally friendly.

Burns like a hot needle. The pain lasts about 10-15 minutes. Sometimes you get swelling and sometimes you get a red patch around the sting site. I have been stung by bees and the body reaction was much more significant than the wasp stings. Bee stings swell up and the area becomes red and hard. Wasps stings are painful for a few minutes then seem to dissipate.
