The bit where he doesn't seem to realize he actually joked about inflicting Tav with the fate he was in the middle of when they met shows how far he's fallen.
It’s extremely dark - especially when you think of all the torture he endured just because he’s pissed off with Tav.
The contrast between ascended astarion and non ascended is wild. If you try to break up with him when he hasn’t ascended , instead of saying “WHAT” he says “oh shit. Did I do something wrong?” Or something like that. No matter how many times I play the game idk if I can ever make him ascend. He just becomes a douchebag.
I thought that too till I actually played it. It's vastly different but I don't *hate* it

After seeing Karlach's origins scene with ascended Astarion I can never ascend him. I feel like that scene really needs to be talked about more especially to the "ascended Astarion is fine actually" truthers. Like sorry but I can't help but see Tav in that exact same position with him at some point in the future. You have an eternity with him, at some point you WILL do something to anger him...
@@scarymonsterzz Oh absolutely, the whole Karlach stuff with him really sheds a light on what he truly turned into. The lengths some people go to defend ascension is actually wild. Like it's totally fine to like ascended Astarion, but I've literally seen people outright say that he's "still the same person but less insecure" and how he can still "be fixed" lmao. Just say you like him evil and move on! That's totally cool. It's the defending and twisting of his obviously manipulative and abusive behavior that pro-ascension players keep doing that makes it so grating.
The only one where I found it interesting was the Dark Urge run because then it feels fittingly like you’re doing Bhaal’s work of corrupting the world by making Astarion your dark partner. Tragic, of course, but you aren’t a slave like Tav is if they become a spawn.

On some level he might but he'll likely never show it. I think Withers said he does feel regret about losing Tav if they were an item(and they were turned into a Thrall by him) but he just throws himself back into his party to bury it.

They added those toxic ass kisses for ascended Astarion, which should definitely show you how he feels about Tav now. I was actually toying with making a dark urge evil playthrough and ascending him until that patch.

Ugh I really don't like ascended Astarion, he literally has zero emotions, I feel like he can't even fathom the mistake he made doing the ritual
i hate how a lot of folks dont realize he's evil and it's his bad ending ascended astarion, literally you must be blind and not listen to what he says and the others in the camp say about thim , karlach goes with " is not the same person we knew before" also he treats you like a slave, until you are obedient everything is ok, but he refers at you not equally, and the writers made it so well and clear because if you persuade him to not ascends he thanks you that you made him realize these things, that he was mad with power in that moment, and that he loves you as a equal, play both the run and see what he says, he scares me so much on how he became like cazador, and you cant literally leave him when he turns you into his consort, also all the creepy stuff he says about you. Not love but possession.... and really why people thinks his spawn ending is fragile and weak? so to became strong you think you must become an abuser youself? no, the path of healing makes you strong, you break the cycle of abuse and have the strenght to face your traumas. You can roleplay his bad ending but not lie to yourself and others and tell he's still himself, he's no more, he's just obsessed in conquering the world like the death trio, he's no better from them. I roleaplayed his ascended version during my Durge run, it fits well, but my favourite run will remain the one where we stayed together and lived in the underdark, he's so sweet and learnt to be good and started healing himself
I hope you didnt let him turn you into a spawn in your durge play, he treats Tav like an object and disrespects you. I dont think that fits durge at all imo. No way durge would take that from anyone.
Ascending Astarion is crossing a threshold for his character, hence why he becomes evil.
Ascending Astarion is not so dissimilar to Shadowheart becoming Shar’s Justicar, or the Dark Urge submitting to bhaal;
For Shadowheart, it cost her her parents to “ascend”, the only people that she cherishes and stopping her from going over the edge, killing them will have her cross that threshold;
For Astarion, it’s the 7000 victims he lured for Cazador and regretted doing so, performing the ritual not only kills his victims and results in Astarion ignoring his guilt and instead relishing in his power, but also form a pact with the Archdevil Mephistopheles, which explains why ascending Astarion also corrupts him, since his powers comes from an archdevil; similarly to how a dark-urge accepting bhaal’s gifts also corrupts the protagonist entirely and making them evil;
Any deal or ascension has something to do with the entities in the game that will most likely corrupt our characters.

The silence and the cut to Tav right after Astarion yells “SILENCE” is just so perfect. It makes the scene that much more powerful. I’ll never do Ascended Astarion but it is really interesting to see how he turns out.
“You will regret leaving me, more than anything you regret” sounds more like a reflection to him “I will regret losing you”

Petulant bastard! I wouldn't let him kill 7000 victims just to ascend, and I didn't reroll the failed persuasion check. He threw a tantrum and left throwing one last cruel jibe at me. There's two lessons in this: if you're in his shoes, you can't expect others to save you, no, you have to do it yourself, pick yourself up and be better. And if you're in Tav's shoes, have self respect! Never let anyone walk all over you and drag you down with them. Fare well astarion, I'm so glad I didn't let him do this!
It‘s sad how at 2:30 he says of how he is free from his past, but in reality that past has just deeply manifested itself in him. The cycle of abuse, the abused becomes the abuser, after ascension he starts to follow through that. He resembles Cazador more than he would ever like to admit, even if he knew. Cazador was also subject to the abuse of the Vampire who turned him, in the form of “teachings”. Some of the things Astarion says greatly reflect what Cazador’s rules for him were.
In fact I actually believe Astarion is aware of all that deep down, that’s why he ticks of when you mention Cazador. He is trying to sell this lie to himself that he is different, but Tav mentioning it destroys that illusion for a moment. In truth you can never be free of your past, you’ll either accept it and grow/heal from it or you just keep it like it is and have those scars keep haunting you in different ways.
How can people like this he literally is capable of turning you into his spawn against your will 😭
I think you missed the part where this is all fictional. It’s not that easy to miss, but we must suppose some people are too stupid to realize they’re playing a videogame and not living these situations in real life. 🤷🏻♀️
Dang haven't seen this good a fall from grace for a video game character since Arthas Menethil. Ascended Astarion is tragic.
Cazador tortured his spawn, just like his master did before him. When someone rises quickly, from being worth nothing to suddenly gaining absolute power, it will corrupt absolutely. Astarion seeks freedom so desperately, that he fails to realize that the power is just another thing to isolate him. It continues the cycle of abuse and affirms the image he has of himself as a vampiric monster, instead of being able to reclaim his own identity.
i can 100% appreciate that this is by no means a good ending/he is very toxic. however it’s kind of hard to not be into this when your kinks completely centre around domination/being owned like a pet, plus humiliation and degradation lmao

Such things are cool between consensual partners when both realize it's just a game for the bedroom and once it's over everything is back to normal. There is a difference between that and being an actual slave in real life, not having right to say "no" to the master or to stop when you're not comfortable. I mean, I know what you're talking about, I am into such shit myself but for me at least these things work on trust and mutual respect. When there is none included, the whole stuff becomes pretty frightening, not to mention it extends far beyond simple roleplay.

Those saying AA is not a good ending, I beg to disagree but not because of what you think. I am always and forever team unascended/spawn Astarion. I think this is a good ending (AA) if you feel this is a good ending FOR YOU. After all, you made/did all the steps to lead him to this fate. You wanted it. Now you have it. And you get to live it.
Does anyone Think that the character and astarion would become more like The Joker and Harley Quinn (The joker only using Harley for a means to an end, only when she has use to him) or would it more like suoerman and lous lane (relationship wise).(like without louiis he would not have anyone grounding him)

everyone always talks about how ascended astarion is the bad option and how non-ascended astarion is good but like. it really is just a choice between a man who is so traumatized by 200 years of bullshit that he can't comprehend having self-confidence and is constantly worried you're too good for him and that he's always doing something wrong, and a dude who's so confident he's become a dick.
And to be honest I think a good chunk of ascended astarion was always there. even non-ascended he likes the idea of dominating the elder brain to control the world, and he wanted to ascend cuz of the power anyway. is he really a different person, or is he the same, only replacing his inferiority complex for a superiority complex?

Hmm I disagree with the notion that as a spawn he has no self confidence, especially after killing Cazador. Some examples: He will defend you from Araj if you run into her again in the city. He will empathize with and try and help you work through your feelings of sexual exploitation if you sign the sex pact with Harleep (much more delicately than his ascended version). He will actually be interested in exploring his newfound sexual freedom with you as a partner (even if he ends up not being into the drow twins he still WANTS to try and enjoy new sexual experiences again which is a ginormous step towards healing).
Speaking of which he'll also be a LOT more receptive to you sleeping with Halsin if you do his quest FIRST and then approach him about it. If you tell him it won't change things between you he just smiles and says he knows but also that after everything he's been through he's learned that it's *okay* even if things do change and honestly...? Such a HUGE character development moment. Finally and I think this is a big one: if you break up with him after killing Cazador and he's unascended he will be very sad of course but he also says *"you made my dead heart come alive again and it will keep beating"* which to me shows he DOESN'T actually need us anymore. He will also break up with you on his own volition as a spawn if you mistreat him. So I don't think spawn Astarion needs Tavs in a codependent, all-or-nothing type way.
As for all his wanting to control the source of the tadpoles: it's true he was tempted by the power of the Absolute at first but that was only before he found out about the truth about Orpheus and the Emperor. There's a conversation you can have with him in Act 3 where he says as much: *Tav:* "I thought you wanted to use these powers?" *Astarion:* "That was BEFORE I knew they came from an illithid and it's gith slave!" It's true he has moments where he seeks power for himself but it's almost always because he craves security. By the time Act 3 roles around, especially if you defeat Cazador he becomes a lot more chill and stops seeking personal power so much.
Keep in mind by leaving him unascended you're forcing him to actually HEAL and work through his trauma and get better. It's not going to happen overnight. But in my personal opinion ascended Astarion's bravado is all for show. For all his smugness man can't even stand to listen to you so much as say Cazador's name without screaming at you. He's a mess.
Meanwhile spawn Astarion knows exactly what he wants. He's the kinda guy to take you to his grave and make a heartfelt confession before offering to make love with you on top of it to celebrate his new life with you. Staring *deeply* into your eyes the whole time. You can't tell me that isn't confidence lol.

I'm just looking him and the choices he makes in the game within context. people make memes about fixing Astarion bc he fits the "i can fix him" stereotype so well but really ALL of the origins characters (besides maybe Karlach) are messed up and selfish in some way and Tav can actively choose to either "fix" them or make them worse. That's just kinda the nature of these sorts of games.
If you influence Shadowheart a certain way she becomes a Dark Justicier and sacrifices her parents to Shar. If you influence Gale a certain way he becomes the next Karsus. If you influence Astarion a certain way he becomes an ascended vampire. Is Gale weak and lacking in self confidence because he craves power after being in a traumatic relationship with a manipulative goddess? Is Shadowheart not selfish early in the game for turning a blind eye to all the suffering Shar causes? Hell Gale is SO pathetic he threatens to kill himself and the whole damn group if you tell him he's "just fine" in bed. Astarion is just a little more overt in his lust for power because of the extreme nature of his circumstances. Of course it's gonna take a little more nudging in the right direction with him. But it's not like that's unique among the companions. Even into Act 3 I was still having to talk Gale outta using the damn crown to become a god.
Yes Astarion wants to do the ritual, when he thinks the only cost will be the sacrifice of his spawn siblings. Which is selfish and cruel but given their history and how Cazador probably played them all against each other it is a little more understandable. Once you go there and the full cost of the ritual is revealed you can see him immediately struggle and wrestle with the decision. But *his VERY first instict is he wants to free the spawn* because he does recognize his responsibility for them being there. If you (Tav) tell Sebastian you'll free them Astarion says *"we'll be back for you, I promise."*
Of course Astarion mentally reverts a bit and swings right back into "I need to sacrifice them" mode but that's because he's literally having a panic attack and just DESPERATELY wants this whole situation to go away. He thinks if he sacrifices them and takes the power they can't come after him, he won't have to confront what he did. In short, he's NOT thinking rationally. It ISN'T what he really wants. And you can confirm that with the insight check you preform where you see the blood and fear is making him think irrationally. Tav doesn't "manipulate" Astarion out of the ritual, as I've seen so many bad takes claim. It's literally the equivalent of talking someone down off of a ledge when they're not in their right state of mind. And frankly he's not weak for listening to reason. He's the opposite.
I just really resent the notion that spawn Astarion is so "broken down from trauma that he just accepts someone ordering him around" or that he ONLY stopped the ritual because he's afraid to disappoint Tav. Like in what way is he lacking in confidence? Because he asks if he did something wrong when you break up with him out of the blue? Because that's a pretty natural question to ask your partner. He accepts you breaking up with him and tells you he'll go on living his life. How is that pathetic? If anything it shows how much he's grown by then. Have you SEEN his reaction when you try and break up with him and he's ascended? Now THAT is a pathetic reaction to someone breaking up with you.
Another thing that really cements this is you don't need to be romacing him at all in order to talk him down from the ritual. He doesn't back down from the ritual because he's afraid to lose his lover, he backs down from it because you make him listen to reason. Again to each is own. If you prefer him ascended that's fine but unascended he is mentally stronger and in a much healthier place than he's been in over 200 years.

No matter what kind of run I do, I’ll never let him ascend. Becoming the next Cazador is the opposite of freedom/healing, and it always breaks my heart how instantly cruel and emotionless astarion gets.

He won’t be Cazador 2.0. He won’t be true vampire. He is something different. Acsendant spawn, also with the partner (consort). But yes evil aligned and power hungry. But if his pet obeys everything is fine. If not - of course he is not fine and will be furious and angry, but it show that he has feelings, twisted and corrupted, but still have.
He even counts with tav’s opinion, although without the parasites in their heads, he could not have done it. And there is no point in lying and manipulating here anymore. He physically owns tav, tav isn’t going anywhere. So he’s not lying. And if his precious pet shares his goals, and supports him, he’s happy. That’s a some type of relationship. But when his pet starts kicking, saying things that hurt, of course he’ll beat back and hard. Still because of feelings.
You can see some interesting moments for thinking, in the ending with romanced acsendant Astarion and tav become mind flayer.
There are also strong differences in relationships if the tav was a hero, or a neutral character initially, and the way of helping the main decider is mostly chosen, or tav was the original true evil character.
And what was the way the relationship developed, support or abuse from tav.

I'm most surprised that he takes you back if you say you didn't mean to break up with him. I assumed his pride would make him reply to that with, "Too bad, you said it and you can't take it back! I'll have a new consort by next week!" I guess he's just trying to keep control--he really ISN'T sure that he can find someone who can really replace you.
