It is kinda sweet how concerned he sounds for Karlach's feelings. He plays it off like like he doesn't actually care that much but you can tell he doesn't want to hurt the party's resident golden retriever.
yeah i really love his response for her a lot...its always so sweet to me when he drops the act and gives actual genuine heartfelt advice because at the end of the day he Does actually care about people, imo, as difficult as it is for him to express it
I think Astarion/Karlach make a cute couple. Especially with the fact that he only knows how to show love by touch, and she cannot be touched ❤ it's cute. But Spawn Astarion origin romancing Karlach has one of the saddest endings I have ever seen 😭😭😭😭
After playing through the game a couple times, Astarion seems especially kind with his dialogue about Karlach, even in the earlier acts. I think he really actually respects her for being a truly good person, and part of me thinks he empathises with her situation a bit since they were both basically owned by someone else and forced to do things they didn't want to do. Karlach's words about Astarion are usually really sweet, too. Her response about him after he doesn't ascend in Act 3 had me tearing up. I always imagine them as truly good friends in my playthroughs, and think they could make a sweet couple (if he remains a spawn).
@@nozomi90 oh absolutely, and actually, you're pretty much exactly right about him empathizing with her situation because of what they were both forced to do-i wish i'd been able to figure out how to work this into the video, but there's a note from the developers in the dialogue files for his line about karlach here ("imagine forgetting what it's like to hold someone, all because of what some devil did to her...") he's. actually thinking about what cazador did to Him in that moment. and how he's forgotten what it's like to be with someone in a way that feels safe. which has me tearing up rn too... and they really are very kind to each other even from the start... i love their friendship a lot its so sweet ;u;
I love how in a lot of these, he's pretty much making fun of the other companions. But when it comes to Karlach, I feel like he's taking jabs at Tav more than anything 😅
Even the resident mean vampire can't be too hard on her. I intended on being mildly evil when I started my first playthrough but I went towards good purely because I didn't want to let Karlach down. It's just a universal effect she has lol
His disdain for Gale is especially funny to me bc in my first playthrough something glitched where I was able to romance Astarion/Gale at the same time and they never had an issue/confronted me about it. Just the idea of both of them being with me and then staring daggers at each other behind my back fjdhdhd
My drow bard danced with Wyll (and might have kissed him because, yanno, bard). When Astarion said something about the "Decades-long" thing with Wyll before coming back to find Astarion, it read a little differently because I'm playing an elf and Wyll is technically human. So it would be only a few decades far as an elf (or vampire) is concerned, huh? Ouch!
I love the compassion he feels for Karlach even when discussing a partner dumping him for her or winning technically but he still feels bad. This is why they’re the best and most tragic origin romance.
Astarion and Gale certainly have an... interesting dynamic. I mean the characters dont interact a lot but either they really don't like each other or... the opposite lmao
I mean Gale is kind of the punching bag of the group in general lol, you get the prompt "Gale annoys the hell out of me too" TWICE when talking to Minsc about him
I wish that there was a Gale and Astarian confrontation like there is for Karlach & Wyll and Shadowheart & Lae'zel. The Necromancy of Thay would have been the perfect catalyst for that seeing as they're both interested in the tome. Also, they are besties by the the end of the game, and Astarian is heartbroken if Gale uses the orb.
Oh my God!!!! Thank you for doing this! Now I only wish Ascended Astarion lines about who are we to him are fixed... :D I even sent a bug report to Larian, but no fix yet... Thanks to people like you we can at least watch clips of those abruptly skipped lines on UA-cam :D

I'm concerned by all these descriptions but particularly so because of the first one, since it implies he knows what a worg in heat sounds like. (and side note, "I value my life too much," says the walking corpse)
I remember him chit chatting with me about how delicious Gale's blood probably tastes. He was practically salivating then. When did that sentiment devolve into "Ugh, Gale...🙄"
unfortunately the lines are currently bugged for everyone 😭 i had to mod the game to correct it and get them to properly play out ingame; it seems like they're incorrectly marked as a transition, and so they always just get skipped over. i was hoping to release the mod but it overrides two files with a majority of astarion's dialogue so it will likely need to be updated with every patch/hotfix, and they released two hotfixes immediately after i finished the mod... i'm not able to update or play the game atm (grad school finals) 😓 but submitting a bug report to larian might help?
Does this dialogue actually change anything with the function of your relationship with Astarion, if you choose to be with him? Like it sounds like you're making it official, does it mean you lise out on other dialogue where you would make it official?
i dont think it does! iirc it still doesnt count you as Together together until you get his act 2 romance scene, which im pretty sure you can still trigger after this. which im glad for but it Is a little weird theres not actually a concrete change in the relationship, despite the fact it does really sound like there is
wow, at 6:55 he sounds kinda.... bitterly jealous(?) about the growing old and having kids thing-- or he's just bitter about the relationship you now have with wyll, and he's just being dramatic, idk. Either way it's kinda sad :' /
it really does...and like, combining that with his comment about wyll being the sort of prince-type he would've once dreamed of marrying, i think, even though he won't admit it, he still wants that dream...that line about the kids and growing old together is also supposed to come in act 3 after never getting his act 2 romance scene, where he never really developed feelings for you and has kinda already broken up with you in his mind. him being jealous wouldnt be about You. i think he probably IS wishing he had that-a future where he could grow old and have lots of kids with wyll. he's clearly thought about it a lot... and it Is really sad how clearly bitter he is he can't have that if you're romancing wyll 🥲 good thing origin playthroughs exist and they can romance each other 💗 i mean obviously the growing old together part cant happen regardless but they can still be together ghtghjk

I’m in act 3 deeply romance with Astarion (haven’t got to Cazador yet), but Minthara is there ready for anything. I know if I agree to mess with her, Astarion will get a bit fuzzy and angry, however I wonder if after my affair with Minthara I can go back to Astarion? Any thoughts?
if you start dating here, do you still get his confession scene where he says you deserve something real? i imagine that starting to date after you ask him out might have different dialogue than when he's the one to confess
Late response but yeah, this triggered for me before doing the Raphael quest, at Moonrise, the morning after Gale's love confession. I think going through all the way with it or not makes no difference, but personally my Tav cut it short. After you kill Yurgir, if your approval is high enough, at the second long rest Astarion's confession will trigger as normal. This is less about his "nice simple plan" and his relation to sex, and more about clearing the air regarding a love triangle. Also, the game doesn't really count as you two dating at this point, even if the dialogue suggests it's a step forward. It just ends the other romance path you had with another companion. You don't get the kiss option or "what are we to you" like you would after his actual confession.
it requires romancing two characters in act 1 and then getting a second romance scene with another character in act 2 before you get astarion's, however, all the dialogue at the beginning Is actually currently broken (they're all incorrectly marked as transitions, so they just get skipped over, even though they're all fully voice acted and animated) in an unmodded game it'll skip from "i heard you found a new lover" to "so, will you dedicate yourself entirely to your new, true love" without the unique comments on each character, but i think it's still possible to romance two characters at once? this Was recorded with patch 5 hotfix 15 tho so a newer update may have broken it further, im not sure...
As someone who ships the group together (maybe not Lae'zel, not because i don't like her but because her and my tav have beef lmao) its interesting to see their responses to it. Astarion beefs with Gale for no reason lmao, and he murders Shadowheart for no reason ("hopefully she's gotten used to loss by now") but specifically he's sweet with Karlach and he's low-key crushing on Wyll (and Wyll is exactly the type of relationship he needs!!!) also the fact that Astarion is iffy on poly because his experiences with multiple partners (presumably only sexual and not really consensual) really makes it make sense why he WILL be poly with Halsin!! Halsin is poly (and has dealt with similar situations to Astarion) so he has experience. Astarion can lean on him for that. I knew my choice to have Halsin wrangle the group of people clearly in love with each other into a poly dynamic that satisfies everyone was the right choice!!
The reason he wished of marrying a prince like wyll is so that he could be wisked away like a fairy tale. 😢 Which is why i kinds ship them. Is it wish fulfillment if I'm fulfilling someone else's wish?
Omg yes Another Wyllstarion shipper! Hi! I'm too exited right now, never seen one of ours in the wild. I love that monster hunter/monster trope pairing. And their lines to eachother r so cute in origin playtroughs!
their origin dialogue really is SO cute...every time i think about wyll's "i know you can find the light if you know where to look. and i promise, you can always look to me" line to astarion origin i cry...im definitely going to try and record it in the future its so lovely
@@magnetuning I've bitten Wyll 100 times just to see his adorable little smile in "oh shit, you're a bloody vampire!" It was my little lucky ritual before hard fights f5 - bite - f8 - confess without biting - f5 A shame that we couldn't hide secrets after act 2, I love Wyll's lines about that
I noticed today they always camp next to each other, my head cannon is when they aren't in my party they just sit with each other and bicker and they both love it
My playthrough must have been very different... Astarion was constantly nagging Gale, but Gale never was snarky or nasty back. I was starting to wonder if he just didn't notice, or whether he just refused to fight back. Guess I'll find out next play through.
Oh, I don't know. I don't mind it when he manages to speak about the hearts he broke with such... ease. Regrets, after all, rarely help anything now, do they. ;DD

I always feel funny asking Astarion to stay in camp with his "I thought we had something special"... then turning right around and asking Gale to come in his place. My Tav is in a 3rd Act relationship with Astarion, and in my head I just hear him going "Gale?! You asked ME to stay in camp... so you could take HIM?!?!" And him throwing a jealous lil hissy fit about it 😂. I'm sorry boo, there are just some situations where I need a lot of magic users stacked instead of sneaky sneak
I actually accidentally triggered this when I Wyll invited me for a dance. I just danced with him, then wished him a good night. However the game glitched afterwards and I couldn't talk to him anymore so I had to reload, then skipped through the scene and accidentally kissed him ^^; After that Astarion wanted to talk. I think it's kinda sad that, when you tell him you'd rather be with him, his first reaction is to ask "what? Why?" as if he can't believe someone would actually choose him for more than sex.
He's just surpsised you would abandon a stable relationship with a prospect of a future, to be in a relationship that is completely unstable and has no future (especially if you left Astarion a Spawn and your MC will eventually die, leaving him alone). Even Astarion begs you to make a healthy choice.
i 100% agree, i think he really doesn't expect anyone to Actually care for him beyond that and it hurts my heart so bad... thinking about the dialogue in a dark urge run that talks about how he'd never believe you care for him for more than his looks, how hes got dialogue where he says hes aware sex is his only talent, and if you break up with him in act 2 he can talk about how he was expecting it + was kind of just. holding onto what you had and the comfort it gave him while waiting for you to end things...he's really not felt loved like. Ever and it broke my heart a little trying to get all these responses, actually. again we will chalk my tav two-timing him with ,. everyone up to the multiverse 😭 (and also me setting the romance flags manually with cheat engine ,)
maybe, but if it helps anyone feel happier about a spawn astarion romance, lifespan extension is very doable in the world of DnD (magic, potions, being a cleric or druid, etc). Plus elves can live for 700-1000 years naturally. Plenty of time go on crazy adventures to find a vampirism cure/time reversal spell like Wish. That's my lil Drow+Spawnstarion postgame head canon anyway :) @@Deadpan_Snarker
The way Astarion says Gale's name is even funnier after watching his VA say that if he had to marry someone as Astarion it would be between Shadowheart and Gale. It just shines a whole new light on Astarion's attitude
@@magnetuning I’ve also wondered that, it might be because he is not that type of person underneath his jabs and flirting. Or he’s just not in a good enough place mentally. Shadowheart says he is too fragile in her opinion for such an arrangement if you talk to her about being with both of them.

@@magnetuning yes, that's the clip I was referencing! I think the easiest takeaway is that Astarion will always marry for power and status. It reminded me of a Florence Pugh scene (I forgot the movie), where she's saying she believes people can chose whom to love and she'll love someone with money.

Honestly, as a poly person myself who's used to getting complete shit from games (and people for that matter tbqh) that comment about Shadowheart was A fucking PLUS. Like, yeah. Fuck yeah! That's so damn fair! One of the best ways I've seen for the devs to say "we are not introducing the explosion of variables and edge cases that actual polyamory creates" (especially when it's more then some token joke with Halsin) in a way that's actually quite reasonable. Undermined if you choose him OVER Shadowheart, but still, I see what they were going for. LIKE. He has some legitimate concerns about where Shadowheart is emotionally and romantically right now (WHICH? Legit. She DOES fall hard and FAST very very quickly at the slightest kindness from the player character, and then also seems to have trouble initiating anything by herself if the player doesn't do it for her. She's definitely got... things going on.) It's genuinely pretty fair. And Gale is Gale. As he said: standards. (=p But really, they could work together, but it's not where either of them are at right then. They're too busy sniping at/gently bullying one and other. Also, to be fair, not that he necessarily knows this, but iirc Gale isn't interested in non-monogamy re: Halsin, and so probably wouldn't be willing to give it a shot with Astarion either, so there's potentially that too.)

its so funny that he honestly kinda gives his blessing for most of the characters if you date them at the same time (with the exception of wyll who he is Totally Not Jealous About) but if its gale he is 100% judging you for you life choices. and honestly? fair, (maybe he just thinks hes boring shdfgjfkds)

Certainly a far healthier choice than Astarion and their romance at least starts on a relatively healthy and positive note, where friendship blossoms to love, unlike Astarion who literally gaslight and manipuates you all the way, and keeps doing it even in act 3. If you can't tell wether your LI is genuine or once again manipulates you for "protection", that is not a good look, and Astaron does exactly that. I really hate how Gale became a punching bag for the community, because he is genuinely a nice, pleasant and supportive partner, and arguably the healthiest male LI, next to Halsin. He cooks, supports you, offers to take you to Waterdeep to meet his mom, says you are the only person who he truly trusts and likes (aside from Tara) and even ascends you to godhood if he became a god; to be his equal.
im not 100% sure wyll would give up his whole, "i want to wait until we get engaged" thing for astarion even tho he really really does talk like. constantly about how charming he is (which, on a separate note it's very fun to me that it's not marriage specifically-i think he really just wants a commitment first shdfgjvkfdsa) BUT they are absolutely like. wildly into each other i love it. also feels like im interrupting some sort of weird situationship theyve got if i romance either of them actually 😭 @ astarion and wyll i am so sorry if i stepped in on your crush ,

@@ChangesOfTomorrowcould easily see how he might see the worst parts of himself in Gale and it just pissing him off. They both have really similar arcs - having to either choose to give up power and be a better person for it or giving into their power hungry nature.
Wyll is best boy, take it from Astarion not just me... Edit: I think i know why he looks like a crying cat too, look at the wholesome picture he's painting of you and Wyll, the ability to have that has been taken from him, and you went ahead and chose Wyll over him, perhaps for that reason. Wyll is a freaking fairytale Disney prince, and Astarion says, in his own words, he isn't one. Sure, Wyll's contract with Mizora has dealt so much damage to him perosnally, but he's not completely gone, and he still has his father to care about. He's nobility and despite being under Mizora's thumb, he's not bitter or petty about it, and he didn't lose anything of what made him himself because of Mizora. Now put that next to the cluster f-+k that is Astarion. Yeah, it's not even close.
(replying to your edits!!) honestly id agree with that! id also like to point out that i don't think he's lying or purely making fun of you when he says "wyll's the sort of prince type [he] would've once dreamed of marrying," he's far too bitter about the concept imo for there to not be at least a little bit of truth to it, as much as he tries to play it off as him mocking you. also astarion and wyll do actually have quite a lot of flirty/romantic dialogue about each other throughout the game (with the most overtly "oh you REALLY like him, huh" lines from astarion being to karlach origin when wyll gets his horns, actually) in addition to everything you said i think there's also maybe a layer of losing the fairy tale prince he dreamed of too...and wyll is also the only one besides halsin he doesnt give an explicit "no" to a polyam relationship with, instead framing it as "wyll would never agree to that >:'((" which...maybe it Wouldnt be a no if he didnt already think itd be a no from wyll? in addition to all the reasons you gave, it cant feel very good having Both people you like get together and i 100% understand him looking the way he does talking about it ahsdfgjkfds it kinda seems like he lost both of you at the same time and i honestly feel like hes keeping it together much better than i wouldve. poor guy...
Wyll sucks ass! First romance I attempted. You will ALWAYS play second fiddle to his dad! I saved this man's soul, but after I failed to save his father through no fault of my own, he dumped Tav because he didn't want any "distractions" once he was duke. Fuck that boy, and he is a boy!

I lost it when Astarion spits on Gale in the beginning. 😂 Also, not Astarion being totally jealous of you being in relationship with Wyll cause you literally marrying his dream boy. He even make it seems like he missed his chance with Wyll because of you, and because you can see the way Astarion projected the future he wanted like a prince charming, long devotion, marriages, and having children. 😢

It makes me think about how he must have been dreaming for someone to come save him for all those 200 years, and that's why he seems to be attracted to the heroic type so much. 😭And the comments you can get romancing him as a good person, like "nobody else has a heart like you". He came out of his situation probably not believing truly kind, heroic people existed, because nobody ever saved him for 200 years, only to see people like Wyll, Karlach, possibly your Tav, and really admire them, but also it feels like there's this tiny layer of anger and bitterness that that was what he always needed but could never have, just someone to help him and save him.
@@nozomi90 In fact, I remember a similar dialogue with Astarion, but I don’t remember when. He got angry at something Tav said or did and said that there are no real heroes. Because someone would come and save him, as he had been waiting for this for 200 years, but this did not happen. I've been playing for a long time and may not remember the details exactly, but this line almost made me cry. Like most things Astarion says when he stops playing sarcastic bad boy for a second. 🥲
I agree that Astarion is sweet on Wyll, but I never read the happy-ever-afterness as him projecting a future he wants, personally. (For one thing under ZERO circumstances should Astarion be responsible for a child, and also) Astarion says it with the ``when I was A KID`` bc he`s mocking Wyll`s (and Tav`s) seeming idealism, which he knows life & relationships are more complicated.
@@IrisGlowingBlue idk, as a spawn after his personal quest is done he approves of kind choices to children and has some sweet lines regarding Yenna and others, I think he'd be fine taking care of a child, under the right circumstances. The horrible things he did in his past were Cazadors actions and not his, after all.

The act 3 dialogues are so BITTER Man, it’s kinda funny, but at the same time it’s kinda sad, considering this bitter attitude might be because he actually wanted to have something with you before, but you never gave him the chance and chose the others
Thank you for the clips! The default blocking for one on one dialogue is always funny, like we`re having this emotionally significant conversation and half the party are standing like A Metre behind us. This is why there`s so much gossip around camp, even with the tadpoles x)
I always thought they get along the worst. I hate Wylls "How's the rat diet going" line. It's not in the game, but Astarions voice actor hinted a few times that Astarion probably wouldn't mind Wyll being dead.
@@julay629 i mean they snark at each other but they also have a ton of like, flirty dialogue at each other too; wyll talks constantly about how charming astarion is and how good his hair looks and astarion has lines towards karlach when youre playing as her fawning over how good everything looks on wyll after he gets his horns. and he also has lines complimenting him afterwards when you're playing as wyll, too. and that aside they also both consistently approve of assertions of the others freedom and personhood, with astarion defending wyll against mizora + calling her a rat for not letting him out of his contract for 6 months and offering to help him out of the contract using his experience as a magistrate if you're playing an astarion origin, and wyll approving if you tell araj oblodra that astarion's his own person and that he doesn't have to drink her blood.. in contrast, theres a note that GALE is supposed to approve of you making him drink her blood, and disapprove if you don't, even though it won't actually trigger approval ingame. they also have a very cute conversation if wyll becomes grand duke, with astarion asking if he should "genuflect, or merely bow" and wyll inviting him out for a drink, to which astarion tells him that "i'll pass on the ale, but the company sounds delightful." if astarion gets kidnapped by the other vampire spawn wyll insists on rescuing him as soon as possible. and wyll's also got this Really lovely dialogue towards astarion origin when you get to baldurs gate and astarion expresses his anxiety over being back that "deep shadows have long haunted baldur's gate-and none loom so large as cazador's. but i know you can find light if you know where to look. and this i promise: you can always look to me." which, parallels his romance scene, actually. (and is also dialogue i am Definitely going to try and record...) it's clear to me that even if they get off to a rocky start they're at the very least Friends by the end of the game (but some of their dialogue is. extremely hard to read as platonic imo). and also the thing is i think neither of them realizes that pairing a compliment about the other with an empty threat of murder won't make it any less gay. when playing an astarion origin and wyll finds out hes a vampire he'll also say that "a lesser man would've severed that well-coiffed head off your shoulders-lucky for you, i'm not such a man." which. hes sandwiching a comment about how much he likes his hair in the middle there and it's not subtle. i dont hold either of their comments in that vein against them because of that, especially because they're mutual. @@magnetuning It's honestly great how many examples you included here, this is mostly dialogue/scenes I would've never found or considered on my own just due to playthrough differences! Astarion's reactions to Wyll and Karlach are so interesting in this vid cuz he tries so hard to come off as mean and unattached but he can't really find anything genuinely bad about them because they're both kind and selfless at heart lol. I know so much focus is put on the romance between the player and the companions but I love whenever we get to learn about the individual dynamics within the group, especially when they're supportive of one another (like basically everyone deciding that Mystra asking Gale to detonate the orb was fucked up when you talk to them after meeting Elminster).
I was literally ranting to my boyfriend about my thoughts on all the companions romantically, and said Wyll reminds me of some Barbie movie Prince type that I love conceptually but grew out of around age 12 Next thing I know in our next Co-op sesh, I get that Astarion dialogue about Wyll saying the same shit The bf just sighed and said he wasn't surprised who my favorite was, and I haven't even romanced the elf yet.
He says Gale makes his skin crawl, but yet I can't help but feel like he's way more jealous of Gale than any of the others. I wonder what it is about him that gets under his skin so badly?
Gale is completely unaware of how socially awkward he is, he is unapologeticly himself and isn't foremost interested in seeking validation by other people. He may be scarred by his relationship with Mystra, but that is an internal struggle that doesn't involve anyone else. Astarion on the other hand can not NOT seek attention and HAS to know what others think of him. He has low self-esteem and seeks validation trough other people, he yearns for true love yet is afraid of admitting it. Astarion and Gale are basically polar opposites when it comes to that and Astarion hates that someone like Gale gets to find love without even trying while he himself is suffering through so many emotions and his self-doubt and gets rewarded with even more rejection.
Saaaame Astarion deserves a handsome prince to defeat Cazador and Astarion would 100% help Wyll hunt down Mizora after the pact is broken. Plus, VampireXVampire Hunter? What a dynamic

After playing through the game a couple times, Astarion seems especially kind with his dialogue about Karlach, even in the earlier acts. I think he really actually respects her for being a truly good person, and part of me thinks he empathises with her situation a bit since they were both basically owned by someone else and forced to do things they didn't want to do. Karlach's words about Astarion are usually really sweet, too. Her response about him after he doesn't ascend in Act 3 had me tearing up. I always imagine them as truly good friends in my playthroughs, and think they could make a sweet couple (if he remains a spawn).

I love the compassion he feels for Karlach even when discussing a partner dumping him for her or winning technically but he still feels bad. This is why they’re the best and most tragic origin romance.

unfortunately the lines are currently bugged for everyone 😭 i had to mod the game to correct it and get them to properly play out ingame; it seems like they're incorrectly marked as a transition, and so they always just get skipped over. i was hoping to release the mod but it overrides two files with a majority of astarion's dialogue so it will likely need to be updated with every patch/hotfix, and they released two hotfixes immediately after i finished the mod... i'm not able to update or play the game atm (grad school finals) 😓 but submitting a bug report to larian might help?
Does this dialogue actually change anything with the function of your relationship with Astarion, if you choose to be with him? Like it sounds like you're making it official, does it mean you lise out on other dialogue where you would make it official?
i dont think it does! iirc it still doesnt count you as Together together until you get his act 2 romance scene, which im pretty sure you can still trigger after this. which im glad for but it Is a little weird theres not actually a concrete change in the relationship, despite the fact it does really sound like there is

if you start dating here, do you still get his confession scene where he says you deserve something real? i imagine that starting to date after you ask him out might have different dialogue than when he's the one to confess
Late response but yeah, this triggered for me before doing the Raphael quest, at Moonrise, the morning after Gale's love confession. I think going through all the way with it or not makes no difference, but personally my Tav cut it short.
After you kill Yurgir, if your approval is high enough, at the second long rest Astarion's confession will trigger as normal.
This is less about his "nice simple plan" and his relation to sex, and more about clearing the air regarding a love triangle.
Also, the game doesn't really count as you two dating at this point, even if the dialogue suggests it's a step forward. It just ends the other romance path you had with another companion.
You don't get the kiss option or "what are we to you" like you would after his actual confession.
How do we get this, fam? I thought if you flirted with anyone else it would lock you out of another romance option after the latest updates?
it requires romancing two characters in act 1 and then getting a second romance scene with another character in act 2 before you get astarion's, however, all the dialogue at the beginning Is actually currently broken (they're all incorrectly marked as transitions, so they just get skipped over, even though they're all fully voice acted and animated) in an unmodded game it'll skip from "i heard you found a new lover" to "so, will you dedicate yourself entirely to your new, true love" without the unique comments on each character, but i think it's still possible to romance two characters at once? this Was recorded with patch 5 hotfix 15 tho so a newer update may have broken it further, im not sure...

As someone who ships the group together (maybe not Lae'zel, not because i don't like her but because her and my tav have beef lmao) its interesting to see their responses to it. Astarion beefs with Gale for no reason lmao, and he murders Shadowheart for no reason ("hopefully she's gotten used to loss by now") but specifically he's sweet with Karlach and he's low-key crushing on Wyll (and Wyll is exactly the type of relationship he needs!!!) also the fact that Astarion is iffy on poly because his experiences with multiple partners (presumably only sexual and not really consensual) really makes it make sense why he WILL be poly with Halsin!! Halsin is poly (and has dealt with similar situations to Astarion) so he has experience. Astarion can lean on him for that.
I knew my choice to have Halsin wrangle the group of people clearly in love with each other into a poly dynamic that satisfies everyone was the right choice!!

I actually accidentally triggered this when I Wyll invited me for a dance. I just danced with him, then wished him a good night. However the game glitched afterwards and I couldn't talk to him anymore so I had to reload, then skipped through the scene and accidentally kissed him ^^; After that Astarion wanted to talk. I think it's kinda sad that, when you tell him you'd rather be with him, his first reaction is to ask "what? Why?" as if he can't believe someone would actually choose him for more than sex.
He's just surpsised you would abandon a stable relationship with a prospect of a future, to be in a relationship that is completely unstable and has no future (especially if you left Astarion a Spawn and your MC will eventually die, leaving him alone).
Even Astarion begs you to make a healthy choice.

i 100% agree, i think he really doesn't expect anyone to Actually care for him beyond that and it hurts my heart so bad... thinking about the dialogue in a dark urge run that talks about how he'd never believe you care for him for more than his looks, how hes got dialogue where he says hes aware sex is his only talent, and if you break up with him in act 2 he can talk about how he was expecting it + was kind of just. holding onto what you had and the comfort it gave him while waiting for you to end things...he's really not felt loved like. Plus elves can live for 700-1000 years naturally. Plenty of time go on crazy adventures to find a vampirism cure/time reversal spell like Wish. Certainly a far healthier choice than Astarion and their romance at least starts on a relatively healthy and positive note, where friendship blossoms to love, unlike Astarion who literally gaslight and manipuates you all the way, and keeps doing it even in act 3. If you can't tell wether your LI is genuine or once again manipulates you for "protection", that is not a good look, and Astaron does exactly that.
I really hate how Gale became a punching bag for the community, because he is genuinely a nice, pleasant and supportive partner, and arguably the healthiest male LI, next to Halsin. He cooks, supports you, offers to take you to Waterdeep to meet his mom, says you are the only person who he truly trusts and likes (aside from Tara) and even ascends you to godhood if he became a god; to be his equal.

Wyll is a freaking fairytale Disney prince, and Astarion says, in his own words, he isn't one.
Sure, Wyll's contract with Mizora has dealt so much damage to him perosnally, but he's not completely gone, and he still has his father to care about. He's nobility and despite being under Mizora's thumb, he's not bitter or petty about it, and he didn't lose anything of what made him himself because of Mizora.
Now put that next to the cluster f-+k that is Astarion. Yeah, it's not even close.

(replying to your edits!!) honestly id agree with that! id also like to point out that i don't think he's lying or purely making fun of you when he says "wyll's the sort of prince type [he] would've once dreamed of marrying," he's far too bitter about the concept imo for there to not be at least a little bit of truth to it, as much as he tries to play it off as him mocking you.
also astarion and wyll do actually have quite a lot of flirty/romantic dialogue about each other throughout the game (with the most overtly "oh you REALLY like him, huh" lines from astarion being to karlach origin when wyll gets his horns, actually) in addition to everything you said i think there's also maybe a layer of losing the fairy tale prince he dreamed of too...and wyll is also the only one besides halsin he doesnt give an explicit "no" to a polyam relationship with, instead framing it as "wyll would never agree to that >:'((" which...maybe it Wouldnt be a no if he didnt already think itd be a no from wyll?

It makes me think about how he must have been dreaming for someone to come save him for all those 200 years, and that's why he seems to be attracted to the heroic type so much. 😭And the comments you can get romancing him as a good person, like "nobody else has a heart like you". He came out of his situation probably not believing truly kind, heroic people existed, because nobody ever saved him for 200 years, only to see people like Wyll, Karlach, possibly your Tav, and really admire them, but also it feels like there's this tiny layer of anger and bitterness that that was what he always needed but could never have, just someone to help him and save him.
@@nozomi90 In fact, I remember a similar dialogue with Astarion, but I don’t remember when. He got angry at something Tav said or did and said that there are no real heroes. Because someone would come and save him, as he had been waiting for this for 200 years, but this did not happen. I've been playing for a long time and may not remember the details exactly, but this line almost made me cry. Like most things Astarion says when he stops playing sarcastic bad boy for a second. 🥲
I agree that Astarion is sweet on Wyll, but I never read the happy-ever-afterness as him projecting a future he wants, personally. (For one thing under ZERO circumstances should Astarion be responsible for a child, and also) Astarion says it with the ``when I was A KID`` bc he`s mocking Wyll`s (and Tav`s) seeming idealism, which he knows life & relationships are more complicated.
@@IrisGlowingBlue idk, as a spawn after his personal quest is done he approves of kind choices to children and has some sweet lines regarding Yenna and others, I think he'd be fine taking care of a child, under the right circumstances. The horrible things he did in his past were Cazadors actions and not his, after all.

The default blocking for one on one dialogue is always funny, like we`re having this emotionally significant conversation and half the party are standing like A Metre behind us. This is why there`s so much gossip around camp, even with the tadpoles x)

I always thought they get along the worst. I hate Wylls "How's the rat diet going" line. It's not in the game, but Astarions voice actor hinted a few times that Astarion probably wouldn't mind Wyll being dead.
@@julay629 i mean they snark at each other but they also have a ton of like, flirty dialogue at each other too; wyll talks constantly about how charming astarion is and how good his hair looks and astarion has lines towards karlach when youre playing as her fawning over how good everything looks on wyll after he gets his horns. and he also has lines complimenting him afterwards when you're playing as wyll, too.
and that aside they also both consistently approve of assertions of the others freedom and personhood, with astarion defending wyll against mizora + calling her a rat for not letting him out of his contract for 6 months and offering to help him out of the contract using his experience as a magistrate if you're playing an astarion origin, and wyll approving if you tell araj oblodra that astarion's his own person and that he doesn't have to drink her blood.. in contrast, theres a note that GALE is supposed to approve of you making him drink her blood, and disapprove if you don't, even though it won't actually trigger approval ingame. they also have a very cute conversation if wyll becomes grand duke, with astarion asking if he should "genuflect, or merely bow" and wyll inviting him out for a drink, to which astarion tells him that "i'll pass on the ale, but the company sounds delightful." if astarion gets kidnapped by the other vampire spawn wyll insists on rescuing him as soon as possible.
and wyll's also got this Really lovely dialogue towards astarion origin when you get to baldurs gate and astarion expresses his anxiety over being back that "deep shadows have long haunted baldur's gate-and none loom so large as cazador's. but i know you can find light if you know where to look. and this i promise: you can always look to me." which, parallels his romance scene, actually. (and is also dialogue i am Definitely going to try and record...)
it's clear to me that even if they get off to a rocky start they're at the very least Friends by the end of the game (but some of their dialogue is. extremely hard to read as platonic imo). and also the thing is i think neither of them realizes that pairing a compliment about the other with an empty threat of murder won't make it any less gay. when playing an astarion origin and wyll finds out hes a vampire he'll also say that "a lesser man would've severed that well-coiffed head off your shoulders-lucky for you, i'm not such a man." which. hes sandwiching a comment about how much he likes his hair in the middle there and it's not subtle. i dont hold either of their comments in that vein against them because of that, especially because they're mutual. (also imo i personally don't think the rat diet line should be held against wyll as much as it is...its rude yes and touches on a really painful spot re: the trauma but it concerns me how often people Hate him for one conversation that does cross a line a little but would be a "augh, sorry, that was too much" moment at worst. let's be real, he's talking to the party's resident mean girl-astarion says far worse all the time to everyone.)
tldr; i think their relationship progresses a lot over the course of the game, but it doesnt actually start from a Bad place, either. and by the end i think they actually do seem to come to an understanding. i really don't think they get along the Worst by any means, and they've got a ton of really lovely interactions that live in my brain rent free. which. i'm very sorry for the novel here, i just have a Lot of thoughts about them 😭 thank you So much to anyone reading this far, genuinely sjdfgklds

@@magnetuning It's honestly great how many examples you included here, this is mostly dialogue/scenes I would've never found or considered on my own just due to playthrough differences! Astarion's reactions to Wyll and Karlach are so interesting in this vid cuz he tries so hard to come off as mean and unattached but he can't really find anything genuinely bad about them because they're both kind and selfless at heart lol. I know so much focus is put on the romance between the player and the companions but I love whenever we get to learn about the individual dynamics within the group, especially when they're supportive of one another (like basically everyone deciding that Mystra asking Gale to detonate the orb was fucked up when you talk to them after meeting Elminster).
I was literally ranting to my boyfriend about my thoughts on all the companions romantically, and said Wyll reminds me of some Barbie movie Prince type that I love conceptually but grew out of around age 12
Next thing I know in our next Co-op sesh, I get that Astarion dialogue about Wyll saying the same shit

He says Gale makes his skin crawl, but yet I can't help but feel like he's way more jealous of Gale than any of the others. I wonder what it is about him that gets under his skin so badly?
Gale is completely unaware of how socially awkward he is, he is unapologeticly himself and isn't foremost interested in seeking validation by other people. He may be scarred by his relationship with Mystra, but that is an internal struggle that doesn't involve anyone else. Astarion on the other hand can not NOT seek attention and HAS to know what others think of him. He has low self-esteem and seeks validation trough other people, he yearns for true love yet is afraid of admitting it. Astarion and Gale are basically polar opposites when it comes to that and Astarion hates that someone like Gale gets to find love without even trying while he himself is suffering through so many emotions and his self-doubt and gets rewarded with even more rejection.
Gale is mostly normal. By this group’s standards, at least.
