      Shame that it suffers from a massive issue. Hitting causing you to lose health is such a bad design.
      It's also way too unforgiving. Dying causing you to start the game from the very beginning is too much

    • @AkiraStrix94
      @AkiraStrix94 11 місяців тому +9

      @@worsethanhitlerpt.2539 It's not as fondly remembered as the first game on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, but the original isn't perfect either, it does have a few glaring problems. While getting different weapon combos is fun, one Gunstar can move and shoot, the other just can't. The GBA sequel (yes, it's a sequel, not a remake) fixes that by giving both the GBA versions of Red and Blue the ability to do both. There's no co-op, not even with the GBA link-cable, but the way the GBA game is designed, I don't think it would work with co-op like the Genesis game did. The level design looks WAY too cramped for that to work.
      The story elements are also pretty different, and certain events change depending on what difficulty you play in the GBA game, whereas in the Genesis version, the story is as basic as it gets. Hell, the ending changes too, also depending on which difficulty you play. As for the lack of weapon combos, I'm kind of glad that mechanic was dropped in GSH, because sometimes I'd remember getting a weapon combo I didn't want in the Genesis game, and it'd take me a while to find a combo that I actually WOULD want to use if I was lucky enough to even get it before a boss fight. Plus, I don't like accidentally grabbing an enemy, just to throw them when I didn't mean to, it's a little frustrating when it happens.
      Both games are great. The first game on the Genesis is a superior version of what Contra should be like (not a fan of one hit deaths, and losing my weapon when I die), and Gunstar Super Heroes on GBA is an underappreciated game that needs more love. It takes what worked in the Genesis game, improves upon it minus the co-op, the story is more interesting this time around, and it's such a shame it doesn't get more love.

  • @av4010
    @av4010 5 років тому +79

    I think the gba game is fine. People give it too much shit. Often people bring up the lack of combo weapons and stuff while ignoring that a lot of the weapon combinations in the Genesis game were kinda the same thing or weren't very interesting. Also, the movement is way different and much, much faster through using the slide, uppercut, and dive kick. Does this mean it's better then the Genesis game? No. It also doesn't mean it's worse, either. idk it's just the cherry-picking I see often that I don't like. (Pick out all the flaws/cut features while ignoring all the good/added things)

    • @ladyinwight
      @ladyinwight 3 роки тому +9

      honestly, if it wasn't for the movement attacks (slide, uppercut, air kick, etc) i wouldn't have even given this game or series the time of day. ignoring the literal best feature of the game and not using it in any of his gameplay just tells me he wasn't playing the game the way it was intended. the side scrolling parts of this game are the most fun i've ever had in a shoot em up period, it almost feels like i'm playing an anime fighter or something. it's too bad that its so short and the top down segments are a boring mess

      100% true. This reviewer has predisposed disdain toward this game. He stretches the truth to fit his narrative, bitches about the game being similar to the first, bitches about it being different from the first, frames the gameplay as a shallower version of the first game (it's not like you explained). He completely cherry picked information to share about the game to frame it in a negative light. Abysmal review. It's a shame too because this game is very underrated and the last thing it needs is some dude spreading a misinformative video damaging its potential to draw in more fans.

    As someone who played Super heroes first before the original, I find most of the complaints to be "Why isn't this like the first game" while complaining "why is this so much like the first game"
    While I can't outright defend the decision to "do the same plot again", it's really not the same plot. The fact that these events are happening again is a plot point, even.
    While harping on changes to the original game's systems is... valid, you can't really say "this doesn't feel like Gunstar Heroes" when there are only 2 games in the series. There's no standard to be set.
    Idk man mostly it just boils down to preference but as someone that played the sequel first, from my perspective Gunstar Heroes isn't leaps and bounds above Super. They both have their strong and weak points. One of my gripes with the first game is that while cool, the weapon merging system is largely rendered obsolete because really you'll only ever be using 2 or 3 of the best combinations, because some like the green homing stars are just way better than most of the others.

    What really galls me about Gunstar Super Heroes is that it bills itself as a sequel when, outside of the cutscenes, it is clearly a remake, and since Treasure was founded by former Konami employees sick of the constant remakes and rereleases at the time, it is Treasure committing the original sin, which is unforgivable.

    • @AkiraStrix94
      @AkiraStrix94 11 місяців тому +2

      Treasure didn't commit the original sin, there are enough differences for this to count as a sequel, because it is. This isn't like what Metroid Zero Mission was for the original Metroid, which WAS a remake through and through. Even the villains you fight in GSH aren't the same exact ones from the Genesis game, and the only characters who ARE siblings are Green and Yellow, Red and Blue are not related at all.

  • @Nikku4211
    @Nikku4211 4 роки тому +1

    Not only is the gameplay zoomed in because of the GBA's size, but also the GBA's resolution of 240x160. If you wanted to keep the characters small, you'd have to make them much more low-res compared to the sprites of the previous game. This was a big issue in ports as well, as they did not want to redo background graphics or make everything use mode 1 or mode 2 to scale everything down.
    Plus, co-op would require another GBA, a link cable, and another copy of the game, so of course they would cut that out.

    I think, the biggest thing that made Gunstar Heroes unique was the combination of stuff. Most games in that style(Contra mainly) let you die if you get hit once. In Gunstar Heroes you have HP, so you don't die in one hit. Add to that the fact that you can shoot each gun separate or combine them... punch, kick and even grab and throw enemies and you have a game that looks easy... but is hard to really perfect. The most damaging stuff you can do is punching, kicking and grabbing/throwing enemies... which is not always an option.
    3:01 I have to say for Contra... Contra Hard Corps did have as much personality as Gunstar Heroes for me... but that is on the Genesis/Mega Drive also... coincidently, lol.
    9:15 Pixelated... I would guess they ARE using Snes's Mode7... while the Mega Drive did not have a Mode7 so they had to do the rotation by hand to the sprites... which results in a "prettier" outcome as Mode7 in certain angles make the sprite look ugly.

Some bosses can be easily cheesed, and the final boss did not damage me at all for some reason, despite playing the damaged animation. The music is trying to remake the original one but way more boring to listen to.
    Idk what it is with this one, but it feels like they ran out of creativity and dev time.

    Yeah I can't even argue on this, when I played it back in the day I was disappointed in it as well. Beating it on every difficulty made me appreciate it a lot more, but compared to the original it's still far inferior. For what it is it's ok, but yeah it could have been a classic if it was a bit more original and inspired. How the story was expanded was a nice touch though, so you gotta give credit where credit is due.
    I never played Guardian Heroes, but I did enjoy Advance Guardian Heroes, I'm sure everyone can agree that it's also inferior to the original. Astro Boy: Omega Factor is easily the best GBA Treasure game imo, for its originality especially, really should replay that one someday.

    The GBA game seriously is rushed beyond belief. Some will defend it (but people will defend anything, really, just to stand out), but it's a mess. the advertising promised a "Gunstar heroes 2", what we got was a wattpad story and half-assed mechanics. While it's core gameplay were good (although they didn't brought back the weapons combo, the main selling point of GS), the lack of stages and overall extreme short gameplay makes it not really worth it.
    "but critics loved it" yeah, it was such an astounding success that killed the franchise.

      you play these for story and not just to have a fun time shooting up shit? nevertheless, are you trying to imply the original had any more story than this, or any story at all for that matter?
      also games being short is rarely an actual flaw and people who complain about it usually aren't even trying to get their money's worth out of a game. with short arcade-styled games like this the replay value comes from trying to get better scores, shorter times, doing no damage runs, harder difficulties etc. even then if you don't want to buy shorter games, you can always uhhh actually research your fucking purchases first
