Mike White, who plays Ned, wrote the movie. Looking at his credits it's pretty understandable how he has written such a natural sounding movie that doesn't smack you in the face with a message or talk down to the audience. He's written and produced episodes for Dawson's Creek and Freeks and Geeks so he knows how to write for a teenage audience. He also created Enlightened and The White Lotus and wrote Orange County, The Good Girl and Nacho Libre so he's just a very good filmmaker overall. His writing with Jack Blacks acting and improve skills was a recipe for success.
One aspect i love about this move is how JB's character goes from being a slacker pulling a scheme to get a quick buck, to an actual, competent teacher, he teaches the kids music theory, history of rock, he makes a syllabus, he selects records for each kid to inspire their respective instrument playing, etc.., if you look at the "History of Rock" diagram he shows to the class, that thing looks intricate as hell and probably not something he could write in an afternoon. He realizes he's being a positive impact on them, so he starts preparing his classes, learning how to connect with the kids and actually putting effort in something since the first time in probably ever. The movie is as much about Jack Black helping the kids as it is about the kids helping Jack Black
@@JustRaine13 Even if he had previous knowledge some of the stuff he did still probably took a lot of planning and effort like selecting specific albums for different band members

lol My brain filled in the plot hole with: "they obviously have to get there during school hours to do sound check, get checked in etc...the actual battle happens later in the day and they're an early/first act" 😅

One of the greatest single performances from a frontman role in movie history. I'd argue Top 10 ever, and without him here this incredible movie doesn't exist. No matter which comedy actor you replace him with, it doesn't even come close. Maybe Young Robert Downey Jr could have done it, and it still wouldn't be nearly the same, yet still been a good watch.
School of Rock is legitimately my favorite movie of all time. Anytime someone asks me what my favorite movie is, this is always my first answer. I’ve been a huge music fan my entire life, and this movie mixes everything perfectly. The charm, the writing, the dry humor, the music, jack black, the first band scene, literally everything about this movie is perfect. (If you ever want to have an amazing night, get drunk and watch this movie with your friends or family)
This movie is just incredible. Just the way Jack is with the kids especially "Fancypants" as you say it would have been considered not normal 20 yr ago but the way he was just like yeah you do you mate!
Apparently the kid that plays Lawrence actually was insecure about his part, and even asked if maybe he shouldn't be in it. And it was apparently that exact insecurity that made him perfect for the part.
Think I first watched this movie in 2015. At the time (and of course, to this day) I was into classic rock, hard rock, metal etc, thus compelling me to watch this. But the message is more than just "rock rules, classical music sucks, rebel against your parents!" Like Alex said it's portrayed beautifully how he inspires the kids, grows a relationship with them, and helps them develop talents they didn't know they had. And it comes off so organically and not forced like it would if it was made today. Great movie!
That line "Everybody wants to party with Arethaaaaa!!" stayed with me all these years as a wonderful and positive statement :) Movies like this one genuinely help kids out.

This continues to be one of my all-time favorite movies. The song they perform at Battle of the Bands is a total banger. “You’re tacky and I hate you” will never get old.
I grew up watching this movie with my dad. We still quote it to each other to this day, and it’s a movie we could watch over and over again without getting tired of it 😂
Fun fact: This movie now has a musical based off of it! Starring Alex Brightman, who does a really good Jack Black impression. I'd recommend listening to the soundtrack, if only for 'Give Up Your Dreams'.
Award Winning Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the Stage Musical. And there’s a scene in this movie where Miranda Cosgrove sings Memory from Cats, another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
This was my favorite film from back then. I was in like 3rd or 4th grade when it came out and I loved it. Soon as the DVD came out, I asked for it and got it lol your video helped me realize why I liked it so much, because of how natural it was. Like it wasn’t all cheesy and lecturing at it’s audience, it just was. It’s still one of my favorite films ever and I like it even more after hearing your analysis of it.
"I have been touched by your kids... And I'm pretty sure that I've touched them!" That line always flew right over my head as a child, but now I find it darkly hilarious!
Jack should have brought home an Oscar for this role. Singlehandedly one of the greatest performances in film history. Runs the show, moves the show, balances the plot, adds wholesome comedy, and unknowingly steals the show all in one frontman screen leading performance of a lifetime. A top 10 single performance- ever.
As a teacher, you hit the nail on the head about the part what every teacher wishes they could say. In this day and age, teachers are only a hairline away from saying something along that line 😂😂😂
Yup, this is by far his most memorable role he's had for me (Later Kung Fu panda was added on the list too but at this time of watching it I was a kid who didn't know he voiced Po)
I remember I read something (And forgive me for my oversimplification) about the tragedy in film culture which is the loss of "the family movie". A movie that parents and kids could like for the SAME reasons and watch together. It wasn't something you put on the ipad and left your kid with, it wasn't something you hid on your laptop so your parents wouldn't find out you were watching a "grown up" film, it was something everyone in the house gathered around for, and thoroughly enjoyed AS A FAMILY. I think the closest thing we've gotten as of recently is "Mitchells vs The Machines" (Which was STILL very bare bones and a little too 'kiddy' for me, but still a family film) because you could tell the people who wrote it... HAD kids, and understood how parents and children acted together. EDIT: I also want to make it clear that I do not count fantasy movies in this description. This is specifically about family centered sitcoms and movies, not about fantasy, which- while it can have the same appeals, is ultimately more story driven and adventure oriented next to solely being a story about a family. I can't explain this in a way that makes sense for some reason, so I hope you get what I mean.
Puss in Boots: Last Wish is a great recent family movie imho even though If I was a kid I would probably leave the cinema scarred for life from the Death scenes...
Families are still being made, wdym? Perhaps they're not as common as before, especially when the G-rating stopped being used on most "family movies," but they're still very much around.
The problem is people just stopped going to these kind of movies. I saw Are you there God? It's Me Margaret last month and it was exactly the kind of family film that did not talk down to kids and was also one of the best films I've seen all year...and it was playing in a mostly empty theater. I don't know whether it's because it's too expensive to take a family to theaters these days or the advent of streaming causing parents to just play something on Netflix for their kids to keep them distracted but when even great family films flop in theaters it's not hard to see why studios have abandoned them.
15:35 I was not expecting the whole Out Of The Blue “Punk Rock Song” The Instrumental Is Amazing And The Vocals And Visuals Are Just Incredible! For you to come up with a Song like this just for the Review, THAT’S TALENT! I LOVE IT!
I have headcanon where they do drag Dewey's butt into court off-screen, but the parents, kids, and principal just refuse to testify against him, and the judge ends up slapping him on the wrist with community service, which the after-school music program somehow fulfils.
Jack Black is just one of those guys who truly to oozes Charisma even in situations where it really shouldn't work. Truly, he's a real Nat 20 Bard if there ever was one.
when i was younger, this was MY movie. i probably watched it almost a hundred times (not even exaggerating i watched it EVERY night). i used to be able to quote this word for word. but seeing as it’s been like 5 years i probably can’t do that anymore.
Nowadays, Dewey would never have been able to pull off his ruse without being outed via his social media account. Also, rest in peace to Kevin Clark, AKA Freddy Jones, who passed away in 2021, aged just 32.
He passed away?! Oh my gosh in my mind they're still kids and I know 32 is still VERY young. I did not expect that right at the end of the comment. May he rest in peace. Edit: Oh my gosh I just searched it on google, he didn't just pass away, he was killed by being hit by a driver 😢
I've seen this one like ten times, I saw it at school when I was a kid, I've seen it with my parents, I've seen it with friends. It never gets old, it's just miles ahead of anything similar that gets made today.
15:47 Why is this such an early 00's song? I mean, it's perfect for the time period it's supposed to be. The hell, dude. Also, I love this movie, it rocks
I think a big part of why early 2000's movies felt that way was because 2008 hadn't happened yet. We watch early 2000's movies now and are like "that guy punching an alien t-rex in the face can afford a three story house on a McDonald's salary, that's so unrealistic".
@@LordChevonlier The point was that there was still a much greater sense of hope and even happiness than in the current era, all of which naturally bled into the films that were made at the time. Even our happier films now can put the intentionally "edgy" stuff back then to shame, simply because that's where our collective consciousness seems to lie at the moment.
@@toasega I’ve talked to my parents before about what they think the biggest differences between the 2000s and now are. Both of them have said that 1. Cellphones and social media weren’t as prevalent as they are now, and 2. People were generally way less cynical than they are now. My dad said there were still a lot of people who were angry all the time, but that wasn’t the standard and it didn’t seep into everything like it seems to now. He attributes this change mainly to 1, social media, but I say that like everything it has to be multi-factorial.
@@asioflammeus4846 To take into consideration - Social Media/Cellphones in general have increased the visibility of the anger, but also that this mindset isn't just "local" but worldwide due to how we can now see what we couldn't before that time.

This is honestly my favorite Jack Black movie. I still can't believe in 2021 we lost Kevin Clark who played the drummer Freddy Jones.
6:11 Holy shit, I never noticed the blonde kid in the background mocking Summer while she was talking XP
Omg I've seen this movie an uncountable number of times and never noticed that before either XD
I realized that when I watched the kids commentary of the movie 😅
That line "Everybody wants to party with Arethaaaaa!!" stayed with me all these years as a wonderful and positive statement :)
Movies like this one genuinely help kids out.
It's just great that Jack Black doesn't try to pretend the girl isn't fat, just that she can shine and accomplish something great in spite of it!
I love how inclusive this movie is. The kids are just people!
@@Ella-bg2veinclusive?
@@Sandman2007 yeah non of the kids are excluded from the class like the quiet kid is acknowledged which isn’t the case in most schools.
@@Ella-bg2vebeing inclusive is making yourself or others include everyone. Black’s character is not inclusive, just merely being himself. He doesn’t have to think about it.
@@Sandman2007 that’s the point the whole class was included in the “project”. Most of the time some kids are tossed to the side but all the kids felt integral. That’s why it feels really inclusive to everyone
This continues to be one of my all-time favorite movies. The song they perform at Battle of the Bands is a total banger. “You’re tacky and I hate you” will never get old.
14:36 HELP ME
I grew up watching this movie with my dad. We still quote it to each other to this day, and it’s a movie we could watch over and over again without getting tired of it 😂
this is that one movie on Netflix u watch after getting tired of looking for another movie lol

Fun fact: This movie now has a musical based off of it! Starring Alex Brightman, who does a really good Jack Black impression. I'd recommend listening to the soundtrack, if only for 'Give Up Your Dreams'.
Beetlejuice now encourages children the musical? I already love it
@@cherie..cherry lol, right? That was his big break before he became BJ
Award Winning Composer: Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the Stage Musical. And there’s a scene in this movie where Miranda Cosgrove sings Memory from Cats, another Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
I love that Alex just will randomly burst into song. He just makes random songs and it's great
This was my favorite film from back then.
I don't get it....?
*OH.*
Rest in Peace to Kevin Clark, who played Freddy the Drummer ❤
This movie introduced me to Jack Black when I was a kid. There's never a dull moment with him! What an underrated classic!
Jack Black is by far one of my favorite actors of all time
Top 2 for me
Yup, this is by far his most memorable role he's had for me
(Later Kung Fu panda was added on the list too but at this time of watching it I was a kid who didn't know he voiced Po)
Fourthed, Jack Black is such a charismatic actor, love him in "The Holiday", "The Kung Fu Panda" movies and the "Jumanji" series.
@@trinaq He was the only one who made me laugh in the Jumanji movie tbh 😅
@@Ditto.007Watching Jack Black play a teenage girl is the highlight of the movie for me
I remember I read something (And forgive me for my oversimplification) about the tragedy in film culture which is the loss of "the family movie".
@@simla5 I never would have survived that movie as a kid 😅
Families are still being made, wdym? Perhaps they're not as common as before, especially when the G-rating stopped being used on most "family movies," but they're still very much around.
Hulu’s Grimcutty is a good family horror film with a good family message.
15:54 Okay, at this point, you should make an album. I would buy it.😀

THAT’S TALENT!
I LOVE IT!
I loved this film when I was younger.
Now that I work in a school. I can't help but notice every safeguarding rule broken.
I have headcanon where they do drag Dewey's butt into court off-screen, but the parents, kids, and principal just refuse to testify against him, and the judge ends up slapping him on the wrist with community service, which the after-school music program somehow fulfils.
@@ryano.5149lmao i love this 😂
I work in a school and yes he does break a lot of rules but I just love the movie so much that I am able to handwave a lot of stuff
And yeah the community service theory does check out. I would kind of tell sub and kids this is a movie don’t try this at school lol
Jack Black is just one of those guys who truly to oozes Charisma even in situations where it really shouldn't work.
Truly, he's a real Nat 20 Bard if there ever was one.

ayo that song at 16:00 is kinda fire!
when i was younger, this was MY movie. i probably watched it almost a hundred times (not even exaggerating i watched it EVERY night). i used to be able to quote this word for word. but seeing as it’s been like 5 years i probably can’t do that anymore.
I can literally watch this all the time and it never gets old I wasn’t even alive when It came out hahah
Edit: Oh my gosh I just searched it on google, he didn't just pass away, he was killed by being hit by a driver 😢
i didn’t expect my heart to break over a youtube comment but here we are 🥲
Oh no 😮😢
I've seen this one like ten times, I saw it at school when I was a kid, I've seen it with my parents, I've seen it with friends. It never gets old, it's just miles ahead of anything similar that gets made today.

7:45 seeing Jack Black as a Vampire and Mike White looking like Marilyn Manson is Gold
Mike White, who plays Ned, is an incredible writer. Love all his stuff including White Lotus. Great film to review!!
I think a big part of why early 2000's movies felt that way was because 2008 hadn't happened yet. We watch early 2000's movies now and are like "that guy punching an alien t-rex in the face can afford a three story house on a McDonald's salary, that's so unrealistic".
That is kind of true
2008 just exacerbated a problem that was already occurring. Wages have been stagnant since the 1980s.
@@LordChevonlier
The point was that there was still a much greater sense of hope and even happiness than in the current era, all of which naturally bled into the films that were made at the time.

One time my English class tricked a substitute teacher into putting this on when we were supposed to be doing stuff for the junior cert. Needless to say that when our English teacher came to check on us she was not amused
The musical based on the movie slaps like wild. It's like. So darn good.
This was never a childhood movie for me, but I loved it when I first watched it as an adult. It makes up for all the missed nostalgia by being chaotic as heck. Honestly, as someone who grew up enjoying chaos and ridiculousness in my movies (Barbie franchise, Spongebob, freaking 80s movies), what else could I ask for.
15:43 Looking back, can’t believe this was my vibe in the 2000’s. Mind I was born 99 so my earliest memories are 2004-2005
Omg I JUST rewatched this a couple weeks ago. So glad you’re doing a vid on this too! I grew up watching this with my dad. It holds up so well!
Don't think I've seen this movie since high school but I saw this in theaters. If I remember anything, it was how positive and supportive Jack Black was of the kids. I honestly believe he's genuinely this good of a side to the people he meets
