I find your breakdown of the gesture REALLY clear. I tried to understand it through a lot of other books and resources, but yours really helps me see how it's an integral part of figure drawing. Also don't worry about making too many lists. If people don't like them, they can ignore them, but they are quite useful to others, such as me ;) I hope you keep sharing your knowledge and make a lot more of these videos
Holy moly, This video just basically saved my art journey. I've been struggling with gesture drawing for YEARS, but then I watched this video today and now suddenly I can draw them beautifully. I CAN SEE IT NOW! Thank you sir Hampton!
If anyone's confused on where to place the thoracic or cervical gesture line (Right or left side), it's always on the weight bearing leg side. That's the pattern I've seen Hampton use.
After trying out different materials, I find that I'm always coming back to your explanations for gestures (and other things) because it is very versatile in doing different situations/poses. Also your book is like a condensed version of every fundamental lesson one needs to master which is why it is (for me) the best out there. Having said that we must carefully go over each topic and pause and think about it because its important/valuable as there are no fillers/nonsense in each chapter. Which is why I appreciate how you further explain it and even show us the process in your channel. Thank you so much!
Ive practically seen all videos about figure /gesture drawing basics and yours are the most comprehensive. And this one is for free!!...I salute you sir
Whoa my mind is blown. I cant believe the master is on UA-cam! Thank you so much for this post! You’re a well known artist among the self teaching community to learn from and I so appreciate you doing this! Hope to see more!
Thank you Mr Michael Hampton for sharing the process of gesture drawing. I didn't understand it at first. Now, seeing your videos, I can continue drawing with artistic confidence! Love what you do and keep on inspiring everyone!
Michael : You are absolutely one of the best figure drawing teachers in the world imo. I am just astounded this stuff can be freely accessed on youtube. We are really lucky and privileged you've taken the time to design these tutorial videos for us. Thanks for sharing your insights on youtube.
Literally just watching how you draw the gesture has improved me instantly. Completely understand how you break stuff down, and was able to incorporate some of it into drawing it myself, with a few tweaks for my own clarity. Legend!
I got your book recently, loved it, but in combination with your explanation here, it elevates the book even more! Just want to say thank you so much for the amazing work :) I've found your way of showing and explaining really clear to understand.
Finally, something that is a step by step/ structured way of drawing gesture. It's also easy to understand for a beginner like me. You're a really good teacher. Thank you! 😭
I've had your book for a few years and I nevew knew you had a UA-cam channel to go along with it. I'm going through it all over again ! You did clarify a few things here. Awesome content.
Micheal, thank you for these videos it helps me alot. I cant afford art school and live in a remote island due to work so thank you so much for making these videos
I always wondered ( all the 7 days that i have been practicing gestures) how to capture the whole flow with only a few lines and not with scratchy lines everywhere. Really helpful introduction.
2:40 Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you!! I can't stress enough how frustratingly few people teach this point, and I have struggled with this. I mean I missed the boat for years. Being a perfectionist with obsessive tendencies, I needed to hear someone give me the permission, and I'm glad there are a few folks out there helping people like me to understand this. I'm not drawing the picture I see. I'm referring to it. It's just a tool.
Wow this video gave me that sudden growing giddiness and excitement you sometimes get as a beginner artist where things start to click into place in your head. Its a very unique feeling and one i find hard to describe, but its one of the things i love most about art so far.
This is an excellent explanation of the why and how of gesture drawings. I just bought your book, "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention" for use with my art students and myself, and I was hoping to find accompanying videos. I've read through about half of the book. Explanations are wonderfully clear, the color choices and design and printing and paper are just beautiful. I feel that the anatomy is well-simplified to prevent overwhelm. The sequence from gesture forward is also very effective. I look forward to more videos!
Thank you for this. I have your book, and though it's great the one thing I think it's missing is being able to see a photo reference that you're applying your concepts to. So this video is very help full.
I found this video after reading your Figure Drawing book and it wraps up the whole concept. Helped me understand the gesture drawings further. Thank you a lot!
Imo, you should do more of this videos, your book is really great, the problem is sometimes with only an explanation things will get confusing as we cannot see the way you do process, and English words is very difficult to understand. I hope you take this into consideration and thank you very much for making this video Michael, love from Indonesia :3
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've watched dozens of gesture videos before stumbling upon yours and I was really struggling with wrapping my head around gestures. This lecture helped me understand how to make the forms work. Keep up the great work!
Excellent lecture, gesture drawing was complicated until I bought your book, and, combined with these videos becomes perfectly understandable. Thank you very much.
All of this is so helpful, but I think the most useful thing is seeing the photograph you're drawing the gesture from. I didn't know you were taking some liberties rather than rigidly fitting the pose to the drawing. I hope you keep this content coming!
Wow, thank you so much for this lecture! I really love your book. It has really opened my eyes and improved my anatomy exponentially. I have been trying to improve my gesture so this is especially amazing! You are the greatest!
thank you for going in depth, i tried watching other videos but they just give the surface level information ive already heard. but yours gives me a better understanding that the others couldnt
I'm late to the party, but I just got your book on figure drawing to see if I can apply it to 2D animation. I got a bunch of key frame animation books and realized I need to learn how to draw those pesky people lol. My career fell apart after moving to Japan and left me with little to look forward to professionally. I found my way back to art and into animation of all things. I suck at it, but it's really fulfilling and your book and especially these videos are helping me make sense of the chaos. Cheers to finding meaning in things that are enjoyable, but may not make money or change the world. Things don't always work out and it's important to learn that that's actually ok and oftentimes the most probable outcome. Our reaction makes it a gift or a curse.
Wow! Mr Hampton you did a wonderful job with your book and explained everything in this video extremely clearly! I think this extremely helpful and I do appreciate the guidance and the details that I have overlooked in your book. Thank you, Mr. Hampton!
Good god, this is some of the greatest tuition I've ever encountered. Michael, are you planning to do anymore of this? Paid or not. It's absolutely invaluable and I'd love to go through a full curriculum like this (I do have your book also but this was so concise)
Great stuff, was happy to see an update. Keep checking back at the blog and noticed nothing had been up here or there for a while. Glad to see you back in action!
I never know you had a channel... I'm reading your book and watching your video.. This really helps me a lot.... Thanks Mr. Michael Hampton sir❤... I'm going to watch all your videos😊
I found your UA-cam channel when I started working through your figure drawing book a few days ago. Your instruction is amazing in both formats. I started drawing about a year ago and have struggled with the figure. I find a disconnect between what a lot of instructors teach and what the demonstrate. I wonder if their teaching simply becomes vague because they have to steer students away from the contours and they overcorrect. Regardless, your teaching is one of a kind. Thanks, man.
Thank you for this awesome video. It's really nice to hear you give explanations. They are very clear and help a lot. Hope you'll continue to do some videos like this one. Your book is great but having some video explanations is greatly welcome.
Just got your book , it was hard to find it at a reasonable price ( by that I mean shipment price) but I think it was worth the trouble. Can't wait trying it out :)
Wow just wow, I already read the gesture part of your book, I searched in youtube michael hampton gesture and wow, just wow. The master is drawing on youtube, never thought a master will be teaching on youtube. Thank you so much for this very beautiful and helpful lectures, And your book is my top 1 book when it comes to figure drawing, it's so beginner friendly like it's hugging me to study. Thank you so much Sir Michael Hampton, I wish you continue your art teaching and may you influence millions of aspiring artist, Thank you so so much✌️♥️
Thank you for this very comprehensive video. It answered most of my questions and thoughts on gesture. I was surprised when I heard your voice, I thought you were an old man, lol. I'm definitely following your series and look forward to more really instructive videos!
Hands down the best video for gesture drawing. So clearly put. I've watched so many gesture drawing videos that explain what to do but never really why to do it. This video made me understand much better why which made it easier to put into my gesture drawings. thank you!
sir, not sure if you'll ever see this but thank you for making your incredibly helpful lectures available for free. and i've got your book, but the lectures are so useful on top of that
its sometime hard in your books to see what shapes or forms you use for simplifying the figure. Sometimes you highlight them and sometimes you draw only sketches. Hope to understand more in your video lectures
I'm learning how to do this now and your helping me so much please go through every step of turning a photo into the base outline then being able to tone it Down by erasing and showing the lines needed to draw without the base to see the right stuff sorry if I make no sense
Why is this unlisted? Edit: Thank you very much for the explanation! It really fills in the gaps better than rewatching Proko( which feels a little to contour based, even though he's against following the contour)!
Check out my course on Proko! proko.com/course/introduction-to-figure-construction/?af=543975
Man took a concept, broke it down, organized his view and presented them beautifully and concisely !!!!! What an incredibly clear and digestible video
OMG it's a video released in 2020 and it's about gesture. What a gift!
And it's from a great author, tho I'm a year or so late
Buy his book it’s like one of the best books for artist to own “if there’s a art book that you will keep for the rest of you life this book is it”
1:50 Story
5:06 Weight/Balance
15:30 Movement
22:09 Proportion
24:50 Actual Drawing
I find your breakdown of the gesture REALLY clear. I tried to understand it through a lot of other books and resources, but yours really helps me see how it's an integral part of figure drawing.

I hope you keep sharing your knowledge and make a lot more of these videos
Same here. I couldn't understand gesture from other tutorial but he makes it so easy to understand.
His teaching skills are magnificent imo.
He is actually an art professor
So glad you could take something away!
@@stevenmichaelhampton you are so much better than my art teacher in university. I learned more from you in book and lecture than in school.
Holy moly, This video just basically saved my art journey. I've been struggling with gesture drawing for YEARS, but then I watched this video today and now suddenly I can draw them beautifully. I CAN SEE IT NOW!
Thank you sir Hampton!
This is epic man. Your book is already a bible and to have another venue of information available is really so so so useful.
If anyone's confused on where to place the thoracic or cervical gesture line (Right or left side), it's always on the weight bearing leg side. That's the pattern I've seen Hampton use.
Thanks for the tip

This is the first time I have ever understood gesture. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us and making it available to us.
This lecture has given me a huge breakthrough on approach as well as execution. I'm starting to enjoy gesture drawing for the first time, thank you!

This is an incredible accompaniment to the book. Thanks Michael!
Excellent lecture, gesture drawing was complicated until I bought your book, and, combined with these videos becomes perfectly understandable. Thank you very much.
Man I started a drawing book on figure and this video is helping me to understand it
Amazingly well explained ! I finally understand gesture....I dont master it now but at least I have guide lines. Thank you M. Hampton.
Thank you forthis. Until this time i learnt how to ptoperly gesture draw. Never understand before how to apply the rhythm until now!
