In this week's episode of the Does It Doom Podcast I chat with New Orleans Metal pioneer Sammy Duet, guitarist of the legendary Acid Bath, sludge icons Crowbar, and of course his current project, the brutal extreme metal outfit Goatwhore.
We chat all about his gear, how his rig has evolved over the past 30 years, ESP guitars, his guitar collection, his approach to songwriting, and he sets the record straight on some Acid Bath questions and rumors once and for all. This was really incredible interview, and I really hope you guys dig it!

Acid Bath and Kyuss: underrated, high school bands, got famous after they broke up, and nowadays whenever and wherever the prominent former members perform fans will scream out requests for songs that the person on stage probably wrote while skipping a math exam - usually "Green Machine" or some other song from 'Blues For The Red Sun" for (Kyuss vocalist) John Garcia and (former Kyuss/QOTSA bassist) Nick Oliveri, any of the faster/heavier Acid Bath tunes for Sammy Duet (even if he's trying to order a drink and isn't even holding a guitar!!), any of the longer/earlier Kyuss jam songs for (Kyuss co-founder, and QOTSA founder) Josh Homme … and, without fail, at every single show he does, someone has to yell, "Play fuckin' Dead Girl!!!!" for Dax Riggs … who always looks frustrated and baffled every time it happens.
Goatwhore is a WAY more "metal" band than Acid Bath ever would have been. Dax' solo shit sounds exactly like what he should be doing (yes, he's working on a new album, he ain't dead). Josh has Queens of the Stone Age, Nick has Mondo Generator and The Dwarves, and if John Garcia starts checking his ego at the door before he walks into places, he could bring Hermano or Slo Burn or any of his "projects" (including just promoting himself as a solo artist) up to the arena/ SXSwhatsapalooza fest level of success in probably 3 years or less - lack of talent has never been Garcia's problem.
I'm really surprised none of these guys has ever lost it when, after spending 2 years writing an entire album of new music, some "dude" the same age as the road manager keeps screaming out a request for some song you wrote before you could legally drink and that none of your bandmates knows how to play. 😎

I was just getting into Acid Bath when I started work as a death investigator. I still think they had a much deeper understanding of the psychology of murder than they let on. “We just did a lot of mushrooms,” okay, Dax. I still genuinely believe someone in that band was reading a lot of forensic psychology books- stuff by John Douglas and Robert Ressler. Or, they were sociopaths. Either way, they helped me deal with seeing a lot of very fucked up shit and I am eternally grateful. Tears, whiskey and Acid Bath was my therapy.

I had no idea who they were, but I left the show with the first album, a shirt and a bunch of stickers and they are one of my favorite bands of all time. A few years back Goatwhore passed through town and I took my Acid Bath shirt to get Sammy to sign it. Sammy was awesome, his eyes lit up when he saw the shirt and he was so excited to see the one I had that he had to take it downstairs to show some people. Awesome experience for both of us I think.

No clue if Sammy will see this on a 2 year old video, but having grown up in New Orleans and Jeff parish in the early/mid 90s, I wanted to say Acid Bath was foundational for teenage me. A few things:
    - I remember kids in school passing around rumors that Dax had taken so much acid over the years that it had damaged his spine and he had trouble standing upright on stage. Dumb shit, but Acid Bath was legendary even when they were still playing small clubs around the area.
    - When I moved to Seattle in 96 I was shocked to find folks in two different social circles who were super into you guys. My college metal band messed around with covering Jezebel but we never played it live.
    - I remember being super stoked seeing an interview in a guitar magazine with Shaun from Slipknot (I think it was in the Iowa era) talking about how much Acid Bath was influential to them.
    - Thanks for making music that still inspires me to this day. And this interview has me going through Reverb looking for RG100ES' (with the white and black knobs).

Great interview! So, I'm from Louisiana, grew up in Houma. I even worked at Fabregas Music, the music store he mentions. I first heard Acid Bath when I was in high school, around 93. I used to see them play live all the time. I was friends with some guys that were in another band that used to open for them almost every time they played Houma. The bass player and drummer from that band went on to play with Dax & Mike on the Agents of Oblivion album. The house that Sammy lived at in Thibodaux, where they rehearsed, I've been there. I knew his roommate at the time. I remember seeing Goatwhore back when it was just a side band. Seems like everyone had a side band going on at the time... Dax had Daisyhead and the Mooncrickets, Audie had Shrum, and Sammy had Goatwhore. In the beginning Goatwhore was just a three piece with Sammy doing all the vocals. Ben was in a band called Soilent Green. After Acid Bath split Sammy hooked up with Crowbar and kept doing Goatwhore on the side. It's great to see them still going strong. I saw them open for Crowbar about two years ago, great show. I wonder if Sammy still has that old Ibanez rocket roll flying V from the 80's. The first time I saw him play he brought that thing out and my jaw dropped, I didn't know it even existed at the time lol.

I remember the first time I heard Acid Bath, I was seventeen and my manager at the time, was into a lot of heavier music, and he had let me borrow Death, Morbid Angel, and Acid Bath's When the Kite String Pops... and I literally keep listening to this album, even though Death's album is a masterpiece, there was something that I loved about that album. To this day I can listen to it and it still crushes me. Great fucking interview. Great job, keep it up!!

I randomly ran into Sammy last summer in the parking lot of an oddities expo over on the Westbank.
Edit: He mentioned Inlow Guitars, that shop is a stones throw from my house and cool as fuck. Kirk was showing me pictures one night at the bar when Pepper bought that guitar cause he had the same reaction Sammy did. I saw Pep not that long after than and he gave me shit for not coming to his bar enough.

After listening to this episode, then watching the video you’ve reposted from Sammy, of him demoing the Doomsaw pedal, made me listen to Acid Bath. I’m currently learning to play some songs from When The Kite String Pops.
Also, I love watching/hearing Sammy talk about his tour stories, in the videos uploaded from the Acid Bath Archives channel.

Not sure what guitar Sammy used on the albums but I did see a live performance of him with a Charvel guitar.
I'm not to familiar with Audie's gear but there is footage of him using an Ibanez bass. I read somewhere that he used an Ampeg amp, some yellow pedal by DOD, And a BC Rich Bich on the Shrüm album. Not sure if any of that stuff was used with Acid Bath.

Man, Acid Bath, saw them in 94, there was like 30 people in the place, they opened for Manson at a place in Baton Rouge called Papa Joe’s. Instantly bought their shit, that sludgy sound with Dax’s vocals. Love both of their albums.

i saw Acid Bath at Milwaukee Metal Fest , they were on the big stage and had bad sound that had a lot of echo ( in my opinion)but i loved the feel and power , in my recollection i asked them as they came off stage i asked if they had a disk and they said it was supposed to be there but wasn't. i was in the pisser and Daxx said they had them and i got it there, it had blood splatters on it . I found some of my life time favorite bands at MMF

Great interview. Just wanna say, I cared about Acid Bath from the beginning. Happened upon them opening for brutal truth in 94. It was a show I will never forget. Nothing like it. Immediate fan, and I'm a death metal guy. I do believe you either live acid bath or you "hate the vocals"...is what I've always got from those who didnt get it. My band had the honor of being main support for Goatwhore back sometime around 2006-7, hung out with Sammy and talked acid bath for hours. There is a certain essence to AB music back in the 90s. I would love to see a reunion tour but would it be like it was back in 94-96? Let's hope. And I was really happy to hear he considers Dax the best singer on the planet.

Even I, with my limited knowledge of Acid Bath, know that they weren’t a New Orleans band and strove to distance themselves from being considered a New Orleans band. They were a bayou band from the sticks.
