  • The final Saturday of August 2022 saw the running of The Railway Touring Company's ever popular 'Cotswold Venturer' trip from London Paddington to Worcester and back. At the helm of this particular run was the unique LMS double chimney fitted 'Jubilee' No.45596 'Bahamas', stepping in for 35028 'Clan Line' after she was temporarily withdrawn from service for repair work. Due to the effects of the previous heat wave still being felt in this part of the country, Class 33 No.33025 would be tagging along on the rear of the train, providing assistance where necessary to mitigate the risk of potential lineside fires caused by Bahamas along the way.
For the outward run, I decided to stay local and opted for my now tried and trusted eastbound shot at Bourton, where Bahamas is seen gently breezing along towards Swindon in the morning sun. Despite this run featuring heavy diesel assistance, I still couldn't help myself from ending up on Sapperton Bank for the return leg. Initially, I'd secured parking near the crossing just off Frampton Mansell Viaduct, where I had previously seen 33025 with 33029 earlier in the month.
However, I opted to save that location for if Bahamas tackles the climb again on her own, in the future, and moved further down to Jackdaws Bridge. Two more reasons were the potential of getting a face full of sun and the strong possibility of getting bowled by the down IEP service to Cheltenham.
As it turned out, I should have stayed at Frampton Mansell, as the sun was in, the IEP was clear and, surprisingly, Bahamas took the climb unnassisted, with the 10 coaches plus the 33 making the equivalent of around load 12! The pain of hindsight aside, it was still an awesome sight and sound to behold.
With the excitement of the Sapperton ascent over, it was off back to Bourton for the last shot. Despite Bahamas doing nothing other than getting a healthy shove from the rear, she certainly looked good as she glinted in the evening light. It's a pity then that my camera's autofocus gave up during a major chunk of the approach, meaning the shot has since been tossed into the pile of unusable material.
    Such is life, I suppose.

Great capture up Sapperton as always. I would have ventured out to see her but after a morning's trip to Purton near Swindon and the fact the 33 was doing all the work I didn't bother. Would have expected the 33 on the back to be doing the same here but evidently not
