Ya, it feels like he just saw it wrong, it's not like they magically came into money. It was that his character arc of overcoming his fear and standing up to his bully allowed him to have the courage to write and publish his book. If there was one thing I'd change though it's how BIff is portrayed after. I feel what lacks is how Biff is bullied by the Father in a sense and how sub-servant he comes off towards him. It's like sure, he decked Biff and got the girl in the end but having Biff still be in their life in such a manner does feel a bit mean-spirited. Like if I could rewrite it, they could of had Biff be a better person and then in part 2 he realizes that Marty had access to a time machine and the person he saw in the past was the same person in the present since he's now seeing this person in the future and it would of boiled his blood to the point where he would want to change things where Marty ruined his life. That would of offered more meaning towards Biff's actions rather than him just being a bad person.
@@airget The whole Biff being their handyman was pretty awkward it had the feel good part of now the bully is the servant but it's just weird they would of hired him considering he tried to rape Lorraine.
I think if you really watch it again, it's not that he's a handyman, he works detailing cars. He probably enjoys the job more, working in classic cars like he did as a teen, as opposed to whatever office job he got with George so he could bully him into doing his work. I think the studio messed up too though, both parties are at fault, the studio shouldn't of gone to those lengths to make a likeness of him. But the hypocrisy of being upset at the first movies message, then asking for more money for the second movie, is just ridiculous.
Yeah people don’t talk about that much but there was widespread belief both internally and outwardly that the original BTF was not going to make waves and that it was going to end up costing the studio a large amount of cash. Strange to see it’s place in pop culture today. I obviously didn’t live through the 80s but that decade in film was so interesting.
I know, it's strange how a family movie about a mother unknowingly trying to sleep with her teenage son was predicted to be a stinker, instead of an instant classic! 🤩
The replacement actress (Elisabeth Shue) ended up having a better acting career than original actress Claudia Wells, who retired early to be with her mother, who was diagnosed with cancer. Not to say that her life since then hasn't been noteworthy. She manages a clothing store she founded in the '90s (Armani Wells), which she still manages, and she has returned to acting in smaller projects. She even got to reprise her role as Jennifer in the 2011 _Back to the Future_ video game.

I didn't know that Glover disliked the ending of the first movie and I gotta say I gotta fully disagree on that. Marty and his family aren't more happy because "money buys happiness" they're more happy because thanks to Marty's effort to change his father from a weakling and spineless dork that no one respect to a confident and badass that finally knows how to stand up for himself against the bully that made him into a pathetic man in the first place. In other words, the ending shows because of George's change personality he became a better man, a better husband, a better father, a better businessman and best of all he's respected by everyone including Biff, but he also treats Biff with respect because he knows better which also implies that his kindhearted nature or at least human decency never left. That's the point of the ending.
Perhaps it was the message. You'd have to be really simple to only see the wealth in the ending. Chances are he saw what the movie made and said "I want more." Same thing happened to Terrence Howard in the Iron Man trilogy. Thinking back on it, it's really ironic that he reportedly saw the ending as money buys happiness and he wasn't happy with what he would have got paid for the sequel.
The part of his original complaint that they didn't tell you about is the fact that the original ending included black servants. They changed it to Biff after Glover complained that it looked racist. Oof
My general impression of MJ Fox in those days were that he overworked himself. He was literally everywhere for some 8 years. Though his current illness got nuthin doing with it directly, it appears he's used up life's juices a bit too quick. Yet, he brought fun to millions of people, and wishing him all the best
I always thought the ending message of back to the future was he gave his father more self confidence back in the day which led to better life choices which led to better life success.
@@justmeeagainn it was his way of saying fuck you biff. if you could hire the person who bullied you in high school to pretty much be your slave would you do it? most people would
I agree, I felt like that was message too. I can see what Glover was saying, but I disagree with what he said about. I felt like, they only seemed like they didn’t have money in the beginning, because they were always having to give it to Biff and also since Lorraine had a brother in jail, she could have possibly been helping to give to him, for attorneys fees, and anything else for legal purposes, and since none of them at the time had no confidence, they couldn’t say no to Biff or her brother 🤷🏻♀️
Absolutely. There are other aspects to this where I think Glover's ego and self importance got in the way (Bob Gale's too) but in the case of his image, he was 100% correct. Nobody should be allowed to use your image without your permission, whether you are an actor or not.
Crispin said it wasnt just stealing his likeness. He said he would have been happy with a recast like they did marty's gf. But instead of doing that they used his face out of spite.
@Vance Jacobs Yeah, from what I've heard Leto took things way too far. Though the "on-set psychologist" angle was only noteworthy because they could tie it to Harley Quinn's original profession. Most productions have one.
It's dependent on how the actor perceives the role. Method acting will always increase the quality of the performance, but it won't do anything to effect the portrayal.
@@Nobody1707 No idea why you'd spread something so untrue. Heath Ledger died from a combination of prescription drugs he had gotten from two different doctors who didn't know about what the other had given him. Universal went straight up psycho, taking someone’s face and wearing it too?! I don’t blame Glover, I’m glad he sued and won, cause that shit ain’t right.
Universal is always getting sued for something. George Lucas, James Garner, Lee Majors, Chrispin Glover, Glen Larson. Don Johnson and Kevin Smith almost sued them too. Take a number.
3:45 - "Fox says he got 2 hours of sleep per night on average"... Me "I wonder what the health effects of that would be?"...2 seconds later... "Oh yeah, not good."
@@Triumph._. Nah, didn't they have to use a mirror trick to put Bruce Lee's face over another actor's body for some shots in Game of Death, since he died before the film was finished?
I would think it was Samuel Horwitz aka Shemp Howard, who died in 1955 with 4 shorts left to film. Curly Joe DeRita was not yet available and it would take time for the studio to decide on Joe Besser and hammer out a deal, so they used similar tricks with stock footage and another actor to hide his absence. It became an industry term to call this kind of thing Fake Shemps.
That "money buys happiness" take is a but of a stretch. I always saw that ending as them being happier because George became more self confident and that resulted in them earning more money.
George McFly is one of the most interesting characters ever created by an actor. On the page, it's nothing, but Crispin went somewhere else with it. Much to all of our loss, the studio and their pride just couldn't back down. Glad that Glover won his lawsuit.
The Back to the Future trilogy itself vindicates Glover's original complaint. Part 2 teaches Marty the evils of using time travel for financial gain, Part 3 teaches Marty that love is more important than ego and reputation. If they were going to take his advice in the end anyway, why not just admit it and patch things up with Glover. Why lie and give him the shaft?
Meh. Look, the entire ordeal came about because one actor didn't like one aspect of the story being worked on by the people who hired said actor. He was out of line. Full stop. He's the one who made the entire thing blow up the way it did, and the compromises that were forced onto the producers were his fault entirely. Let me stress that point: Things that made the second movie a lesser movie are there because one actor throwing a fit left the producers with their hands tied.
@@Asterra2 oh please Crispin having to be vocal about the script towards the end is why Bob Gale constantly puts so much negatives into him throughout the constant director commentaries he does in the Dvd releases of BTTF. It's a case of one person's ego getting the better of Bob and being so bitter about how Crispin spoke up and made many suggestions his ego couldn't handle that someone that didnt have top billing like MJF had could still speak up and be vocal about his ideas.
And may i add, the fact that Bob Gale used a mould of Crispin's face and have another actor wear that face mould to give the appearance that he is in the movie when in actual fact Bob offered Crispin less than half of the amount Crispin asked for the 2nd movie and Crispin refused understandably so, is the reason Crispin isnt in parts 2 and 3. Bob puts so much shit on Crispin at whichever chance he gets. I love the BTTF movies even part 3 but Bob Gale and his pretentious ego i have no like towards him at all.
They went to great lengths to disguise someone else as George McFly, but they simply recast Marty's girlfriend without even pretending to make them look similar.
@@luan4594 It really shouldn't be an issue. Recasting is done all the time, and is easy for the audience to suspend disbelief for something so minor. So why not do the same for the father though? In a way, the director or producers made it an issue by going out of their way to try to cover it up.
@@jeffc5974 what should she have done then? She was unconscious and then Doc and Marty traveled to 1955 to fix the timeline and left her in 1985 i don’t see the problem
Back to the Future is such a huge classic. It's gold. There's various reasons for that, but no doubt Michael J Fox and Crispin Glover are the main reason. Both performances were stellar.
I always thought it was funny that George never turned to Loraine and said "Hey how come our son looks exactly like my best friend and your ex from high school?" Edit, 1 year later: I never thought Id be the type of person to edit in a comment but I think its hilarious how seriously some of you are taking this comment.
When you were younger, ever look back at images of your parents and think "wow they have changed". Back from high school, with a guy they only seen once, is a very long time that they have no more comparison to go back to. Counter that with how they witnessed their child growing up, never really noticing the change as he got older.
It's a fictitious film, an "imitation of life", a metaphor....not a documentary...in any such film you'll find elements of suspended disbelief. Eg. A Delorean that works as a time machine.
@@fulldisclosureiamamonster2786 it felt to me the real message was that since they had pride and self respect of themselves they were more successful. he stood up to his high school bully and then later stood up for himself and what he wanted.. and she fell in love with him for the right reasons and not because she was treating him for injuries. @HOLLYWOOD Back then, TV and movies were very separate things, there wasn't the crossover between actors and projects like there is now. Fox was a famous TV star in America but worldwide he wasn't, unless you watched that particular show. He wasn't the global star and name that BTTF made him.
@@lwaves True. But, being famous in America, esp how famous he was in Hollywood, and the millions upon millions of viwers they got per episode...it's not accurate to call him 'some kid from a TV show'. He also did do movies before BTTF although they never got nearly as popular as BTTF.
If Crispin thought the take-home message was "Money Buys Happiness", then he clearly wasn't paying proper attention. One of the chief credos of the film is stated 3 times-"If you set your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!" The family isn't happy *because* they're "rich". They're happy because they're all self-confident. The money is just a nice little by-product of that. Never forget that, despite the improvement in their financial situation, they still live in Lyons Park, instead of the much richer area that gets established in the later films.
It's a shame people hate on 3. I always felt part 2 as the weaker of the three. I loved the reversal that Marty was the one telling doc to not mess with the past. And it made marty to not give into his pride when someone calls him out. As it always led to bigger problems for him.
Yeah, I don't think he was fired because he wasn't funny enough. He saw the role in a completely different light than the producers, and was playing it more serious. I prefer the movie we got, but I would love to see Stolz's darker take on the theme.
That's a good point. Michael J Fox's Marty never really seemed bothered by the fact that he didn't actually know his new 1985 family anymore. They were basically complete strangers to him, but he was happy cause he had a nice truck lol.
Stoltz had 2 bad things for the main role: 1) his face is too rigid in every scene 2) he's tall and strong and that doesnt work well when it comes to show a little guy struggling with bullying
I think him being tall and strong made sense in context, he didn't see that aspects of himself, he was so bullied back then that he believed his reality was being weak and worthless of doing something good.
Tom Wilson, who played Biff, was bullied as a kid despite his size. And he got the role of Biff when they cast Eric Stoltz because the original Biff choice J.J. Cohen, who ended up as Skinhead in Biff's gang, was only a little taller than Stoltz. Which meant when they got Michael J. Fox after all, Marty ended up *WAY* shorter than Biff.
The situation with Eric was a result of casting an actor They could live with because they couldnt get the actor they wanted . For all the criticism of Eric, he was professional and did a serviceable job of playing Marty. However he was a dramatic actor who was not versed in the kind of comedy integral to the film . As a fan of the film, I have no issue with Stoltz who is a fine actor . He has done fine work in other projects including Caprica.
Glover’s performance was so good that I’m not sure If he actually acted or just being himself. I’m still salty that he’s not in 2&3. Like imagine if he’s part of the casts..
poor glover, thought everyone was too dumb to realize the point of the ending was that happiness and confidence lead to financial success, not the other way around, and it was a pretty clear message: if you let people walk all over you out of fear, you will almost certainly be miserable. Then he walks away because they won't pay him as much, making his issues with the ending sound even more absurd. He seemed to have a huge chip on his shoulder for a long time, I hope he is doing better now, but I am kind of afraid to look because hollywood stories that start that way rarely turn out well
I always felt something was weird with that scene of McFly hanging upside down. It kinda scared me as a kid because there was something that didn't add up with the expression of his face. Thanks for teaching me something new today!
OMG I've never knew that Universal begged Michael J Fox to play Marty Mcfly even they already got an actor and filmed some of it...Probably Michael was destined to be Marty Mcfly
They had wanted Michael from the start. But they couldn’t get him out of doing ‘Family Ties’, which is why they tried using Eric Stoltz at first, and when that just wasn’t working, Michael ended up doing both on an insane schedule of 2 - 5 hrs sleep per night.
@@diegocarvajalcastro They were SIX WEEKS into filming. That’s about halfway, or almost. It took 13 additional weeks to finish filming with Michael J Fox onboard.
Just wait with CGI tech in a few years and voice modulation software studios will probably have it in actors contracts that they have the right to use your face and voice after you die. Hell they already did it in star wars rouge 1. Looked off at times but give it a few years.
What would piss you off more. Them making a rubber mold out of your face and goin to the max to keep your character and avoid paying you. Or, them spending 4 million to can you basically, cause you suck
@switch player 101 They used the technique but for Rogue One they got permission from both Carrie Fisher (who was alive at the time) and from the Cushing Estate to use their likenesses. So no, they didn't already do it the way you say for that movie. Same goes for the use of Carrie's footage/likeness in Rise Of Skywalker. For the future, if the actor signs those rights away in their contracts then so be it, it's their choice.
@Halie Parker They already had the mold from BTTF1 as that's how prosthetic makeup works. Glover obviously knew about that and that's not why he was pissed. The problem came from them making more masks using them on another actor for BTTF2 without asking him.
He drank diet Pepsi and took amphetamine diet pills. He had a weight problem when he was younger. I would bet almost anything that is what caused his Parkinson's.
So George McFly had Biff taking the piss out of him and then in real life the film company. Using a mold of hes face without asking him is way out of order in my view. No wonder he was pissed off.
I remember a shot from Fringe where they`re at an alternative reality, and there`s a poster where they anounce "Back to the Future: Starring Eric Stoltz!"
MJF was amazing in his prime.. and even when his health let him down, he was still the beating heart of Spin City... wish him well, miss the classic timing and impeccable humour he brought to every role. Ive gone back to watch Family Ties episodes that predate my young interest. Classic
Its sad that we didn't get to see Crispin Glover in parts 2 and 3. But the lawsuit did ensure that this would never happen again. So overall, I count this as a win.
Me: "Well, they fired Marty because Needles goaded him into illegal activities at work by calling him a chicken." *click* Nerdstalgic: "Why they fired Eric Stoltz." Me: "Eric Stoltz? THE ACTOR?!"
Fun fact: The original Jennifer was played by Melora Hardin aka Jan Levinson-Gould from the Office, but she was matched up height-wise with Stolz and was too tall for Micheal J. Fox so was recast with Claudia Wells
I took the DeLorean for a spin to the alternate reality where they released the film with Eric Stoltz in the lead. The alternate reality you describe where Stoltz and Glover were in all three films doesn't exist because the film tanked at the box office and therefore there was no sequel. People either had never heard of BTTF, or they said it sucked.
From everything that I've read, they really wanted Michael J. Fox, but they couldn't get him. They had to start filming, so Eric was hired as a placeholder. Then the director deliberately told Eric that he was giving a good performance even though he knew that the studio was looking for a different performance. This insured that when Michael became available, the studio would agree to fire Eric and hire Michael in his place.
Wow, you actually did the impossible and taught me something I didn’t know about Back To The Future. I didn’t know Crispin Glover’s side of this. That’s what I get for getting my info from the studio.
Eric Stoltz did not fit the role of Marty, that's why he was fired...although his fist he used to punch Biff in Lou's Cafe made it into the final product!
Clickbait that’s good. Too many reboots and rehashes nowadays. There are some good movies being made still, but it feels like the industry overall is too vanilla. Movies are filled with the same tired tropes and predictable storylines. A lot of movies are enjoyable, but they don’t make classics anymore.
Ironic as it is one of the few movie remakes I would be interested in seeing. I think it would be interesting (and different enough) to see a kid today get sent back to the 1980s.
Not necessarily anything to do with the subject matter, but am I the only one who loves Nerdstalgic’s voice? 😅 from the inflections, the tone, the clarity. Makes the videos such a pleasure to watch and listen to.
4:35 I think it's the other way around: Happyness buys money. If you're a happy person you have more motivation to reach your goals, which often leads to earning more money. Marty's father first came together with Marty's mom, which made him happy, and then he became successful.
@@IvanTaylorIT My point was that you CAN buy money with happyness, not that you definitely WILL buy money with happyness. When youre happy while beeing poor, why should you try to get more money? But that's not negating that living a happy life makes it easier for you to earn money. I think you're oversimplyfying my comment.
Then you are just as wrong as he was. The message was never about money buying happiness, his character managed to overcome his insecurities by beating the bully, and therefore got the confidence to ask out his future wife, and become a writer. He simply became famous and happened to get money because people enjoyed what he wrote.
I am happy that they were able to make Back to the Future with Micheal J Fox. However, I find it regrettable that Crispin Glover was not kept for the other two movies. I am certain that by doing so the trilogy would have been even better.
That’s interesting that Eric Stoltz lost the part because he wasn’t funny enough. Fast forward to Pulp Fiction where he was Lance the drug dealer and he was very funny in that role. I imagine that to be an important lesson for an actor to learn.
And what exactly is the important lesson to be learned? That working on vastly different roles with vastly different people requires different acting efforts? Cause that's kind of obvious to any actor.
Fox killed it, but I still feel bad for Eric Stoltz. Imagine being thrown away from a movie like that, and then seeing how it succeed with another actor. It was not his fault, it was the damn casting fault.

Money doesn't buy happiness. Happiness buys money.
Oof
That was an amazing realization
Nice insight, it was a pretty cool ending for a film
Honestly that explains why Michael J Fox always looks so tired in the non-action scenes.
yeah he was always sighing like he was tired, always looked too calm
Well, it ended up making sense due the situations he went through all the story
But he still played it well
My general impression of MJ Fox in those days were that he overworked himself. He was literally everywhere for some 8 years. Though his current illness got nuthin doing with it directly, it appears he's used up life's juices a bit too quick.
Yet, he brought fun to millions of people, and wishing him all the best
hes tired because the actor micheal j fox had a very bad disease and thats why he dousent act anymore
I always thought the ending message of back to the future was he gave his father more self confidence back in the day which led to better life choices which led to better life success.
Do his “better life choices” include hiring the guy that tried to rape his wife to wax his cars?

@Vance Jacobs Yeah, from what I've heard Leto took things way too far. Though the "on-set psychologist" angle was only noteworthy because they could tie it to Harley Quinn's original profession. Most productions have one.

NinjaMatt2201 Even the original film disproves his claim because George learned to finally stand up for himself and not just take the abuse from Biff
Because Hollywood doesn't have time for sympathy for them time is money.

This is why they specifically wanted him as Marty, and thank god for that!
I loved that show because of Alex P Keaton
@HOLLYWOOD Back then, TV and movies were very separate things, there wasn't the crossover between actors and projects like there is now. Fox was a famous TV star in America but worldwide he wasn't, unless you watched that particular show. He wasn't the global star and name that BTTF made him.
@Mr Glass Tf is you talking about he literally said he was 'just some kid from a TV show' which is wildly inaccurate.
@@PatoGuzmanAd I totally agree with you! Looking back at the franchise, I think they made a mistake.
Tom Wilson, who played Biff, was bullied as a kid despite his size. And he got the role of Biff when they cast Eric Stoltz because the original Biff choice J.J. There's that word again, heavy! Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull in the future? 🔮🤔😉
@@trinaq beat me to it 🤣
Beat me too!....but, "wait, don't tell me. Your here from the Coast Guard Youth Auxiliary...."
Little known fact. this incident inspired Phil Collins to write "Sue, sue, studio".
lolz
I turned myself into a DeLorean, Marty. I'm DeLorean Doc
this is so humorous my grandpa would have loved it
Heaviest shit I've ever seen
Not necessarily anything to do with the subject matter, but am I the only one who loves Nerdstalgic’s voice? 😅 from the inflections, the tone, the clarity. Makes the videos such a pleasure to watch and listen to.
Ru Totally get it. There are a couple you tubers who I really only listen to because I enjoy the way they speak.
4:35 I think it's the other way around: Happyness buys money.
If you're a happy person you have more motivation to reach your goals, which often leads to earning more money.
Marty's father first came together with Marty's mom, which made him happy, and then he became successful.
Happiest ppl can be poor for a lifetime but still happy I think you're oversimplyfying
Man, I always thought the lawsuit was because they used the litteral footage of him dancing (from part 1) in part 2. That facemold stuff is vile.
I think you are allowed to show clips from a movie that was already made .
I agree with Glover that the ending of the first movie is its biggest weakness. I could just never pinpoint why until now.
i don't really get it though, the ending is not at all about "money = happiness" its more about how happiness and confidence = money
Then you are just as wrong as he was. The message was never about money buying happiness, his character managed to overcome his insecurities by beating the bully, and therefore got the confidence to ask out his future wife, and become a writer. He simply became famous and happened to get money because people enjoyed what he wrote.
Sorry to hear Glover got treated that way.
I would love to see the original version... however much of it they have.
When you realize that their future is your past. That is some really deep stuff to think about, but we just gotta deal with the times
Lego
Eric stoltz looks like a teen from the 2000s playing as a 80s teen in a retro movie lmao
No mention of the end scenes of Marty's girlfriend from part 1 being re-shot for part 2 with Elizabeth Shue taking her place?
I guess the reason for that wasn't as weird.
I feel sorry for Crispin Glover.
I imagine that to be an important lesson for an actor to learn.
yup good point stupid
Honestly, I think it's that they wanted Michael J. Fox all along so the director didn't tell Eric that they wanted him to be funny.
Eric in his mind was making his own movie, he didn't think Marty should be clumsy sometimes: he thought he should be a tough guy
different kinds of funny
And what exactly is the important lesson to be learned? That working on vastly different roles with vastly different people requires different acting efforts? Cause that's kind of obvious to any actor.
Crispin Glover is and forever will be my favorite actor. I’m TOTALLY in his boat with all this.
Should have won an oscar
I knew the part 2 George looked plasticky. That's disgusting!
Fox killed it, but I still feel bad for Eric Stoltz. Imagine being thrown away from a movie like that, and then seeing how it succeed with another actor. It was not his fault, it was the damn casting fault.
“Darth Vader said he was gonna melt my 🧠!” 🤣 That was pretty funny.
