It's really a shame we didn't see more of Derek Jacobi. He did a fantastic job of transforming from what seemed like a humble old man to a completely evil genius.
I love how when he regenerates he lets out that harrowing scream, makes him seem like some kind of howling monster. When the Doctor regenerates it's like the rebirth of a phoenix, dramatic and exciting, yet sad. When the Master regenerates it's like the birth of a freaky horror movie creature.

Ionut Maris I understand, but the thing is, there wasn't even a teaser. Nothing about it in the previous "Next time" clip or anything. That's why it was so cool.
The Dragon Dalek I think that he had a plan. For me his plan was to go back in time, send a message to the people saying to come to "Utopia" and then kidnapp them and turn them into those creepy technological flying balls with whome he conquered the Earth. That would explain why Yana was there: he projected that from the first place going back to the past as the Master with the Tardis. If he didn't send that message, he wouldn't be there to help the flying machine to evacuate the Universe, he wouldn't have met the Doctor and he wouldn't have become a Time Lord again, so he couldn't have send that message and etc. etc... That's actually a great plan. O.O
It never ceases to amaze me how much of an impact Jacobi's Master had on the fans despite only appearing for a few brief minutes. I guess it just goes to show what a fantastic actor Jacobi is. I can't wait for him to reprise his role later this year.
I know everyone here is saying Jacobi should have more screen time, but I'm still bothered by the fact that John Simm only had 4 episodes as the Master.

+Jack Franklin Vlogs But the point that I am trying to make is that those occasions when The Master stole someone else's body, do not count as regenerations. They are just possessions. And he did not "change his face" after either body theft. When he possessed Tremas, he kept the same face. He just made it younger using his remaining power from the Source of Traken.
+Jack Franklin Vlogs Regenerated Time Lords don't replace their current, dying body with a new one. Their own body has its cells renewed and rearranged. Basically, same body, different shape. Taking over/stealing another being's body is not the same as renewing their own body. Therefore, possession doesn't count as regeneration. It's just an alternate method for the Master to extend his life. Perhaps it is cheap. But definitely not regeneration.

+Daniel Ryan Not really. They did manage to bring all 13 Doctors into one place. Granted, you only get to see 4 of the actors, but still. I am going to assume that was the thought in mind. @@Bithe7011 Their titles, adopted titles that is, are part of the right of passage for the high lords of Time Lords themselves. As soon as they go through the rite of passage they choose an identity that permeates the way they will wade through the time vortex (all of time) when and if they every decide to traverse it in any manner. E.g. this is why there is Lord General (military commander), Lord President, Lord Doctor, Lord Master and so on. All Time Lords can traverse the time vortex but the highest of them become an embodiment of an idea itself and essentially become the fixed moments in time that define said idea, e.g. the Doctor heals, the Master subjugates and so on. It is a very interesting concept, and when toyed properly with, e.g. during the Time War where the Doctor became a War Doctor, essentially a combatant, it can bring out great stories. Let's also not forget that during the Time War, the Doctor (War Doctor) and the Master fought together against the Daleks during the whole time continuum, which ended with the "fall" of Gallifrey and the eventual Time Locking of the Time War so that no more time travellers could affect these moments, essentially making all the Time War fixed moments in time and solidifying the aspect of the military Doctor as was depicted by the late great John Hurt.
Imagine how painful this must have been for The Master. Only minutes before this he had every cell in his body changed from Human to Timelord by opening the fob watch, which as shown in Human Nature, is an extremely painful process, which was then followed up by a regeneration, which completely changed every cell in his body AGAIN. No wonder he screamed.
MoBro the Master has been through worse. He was once badly burned and has said that he felt a huge amount of pain at the slightest movement. Worst of all was that he was in his 13th body so he couldn’t regenerate out of it
+Amir Pourghoureiyan Seems to me you need to brush up on your Classic Who. Seven was pretty much swimming in Six's outfit. XD And Two's jacket doesn't look nearly as long on Three. And then Seven only had a morgue shroud on when his regeneration finally kicked in. Those are the only times when there have been major size differences from one Doctor to his successor.
+OrangeKyle91 I've seen clips of said Doctors after regeneration and I believe that their old clothes fitted them almost exactly, I don't see any significant size difference
Jacobi's clothes were a little bit loose on Simm. He's an inch taller, but Simm is slimmer. Also, on the last four doctors, they were all the same height, except Tennant who is an inch taller, but Eccleston was the broader one. So, that's why his jacket was big for Tennant.
+Nick Piers Oh I couldn't agree more, the way that the Master got overthrown at the end was weak but this scene and 'The Sound of Drums' were absolutely terrific.
This is why I love Sacha’s version so much: after that reveal, he cycles through every setting The Master should have. It’s a remarkable bit of acting.
“I’m asking you really properly just stop.. just think!” “Use my name..” “Master, I’m sorry…” I LOVE IT RTD was unmatched. So glad we’re getting him again
A lot of people are complaining we didn't get more Jacobi onscreen which I agree is a crime. However, if you want more Jacobi and are able to then listen to his audio series The War Master from Big Finish. Big Finish made Derek Jacobi into the best Master in all of Doctor Who. The producer of The War Master and the person responsible for writing Jacobi's Master in other stories for Big Finish, Scott Handcock, is the script editor for RTD2 so if Jacobi is still up for it this is the best time for his Master to make a return to screen.
This is one of the 2 best CGI effect regenerations because you actually see the face morph, I loved watching Confidential on this. Joint first is Eccleston to Tennant as you see the hair change.
+erosion271 The Eccleston/Tennant regeneration and Jacobi/Simm regeneration have a CGI sequence lasting several seconds where the face gradually changes. All the later ones have a similar energy build up, but the actual change occurs instantly or off-screen.
Back before listening to the War Master Audio Drama's: Man, it's a shame we didn't get to see Derek Jacobi's master more and how the doctor would have gone about stopping a plan. After listening to the War Master Audio Drama's: I'm starting to understand why they had him regenerate. Jacobi's Master with a year of prep-time would have been almost unstoppable.
Derek Jacobi.. amazing actor that clip where he turns round his eyes... his eyes say everything! No words needed... I am certainly going to get the audio books...
Simm made such a perfect foil for Tennant; I'm curious to see how he'll stack up when pitched against Capaldi. I do like Gomez, but I can't help but feel that someone like Jacobi would've been a waaaaay better foe for the Twelfth Doctor
have you noticed when Simm returned as the Master in Capaldi's run, he was sporting the silver tint to his hair and the goatee similar to Roger Delgado's look during the 70's even having a bit of a serious tone mixed in with his own I liked him returning, it gave me a reason to like Michelle Gomez's version more. even though I still don't like the idea of Time Lords changing gender, I think it would have been more fitting if Michelle Gomez turned out to be Rani
Loved The Masters regeneration. Compared to The Doctor’s, The Master’s regeneration looks more sinister which is suiting to what kind of character he is.
Imo this is still the absolute best regeneration in terms of presentation. You can argue that 10 or 11's regenerations were better narratively if you want, but the visuals here are the absolute best we've ever seen. It uses a morph rather than a simple fade, but it's masked behind other heavy effects and shot from an angle which makes the transition between two very different looking people seem completely natural. Whereas Capaldi to Whittaker looked really janky for a number of reasons, including the fact that the angle leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination and the energy effects look like a simple filter.
I love the line "Let's stop and have a nice little chat where I tell you all my plans and you can work out a way to stop me" the way it's poking fun at classic who is hilarious but is very in character for the master
Simm got much more time than Jacobi, at least. Far, far more time. It's a shame Jacobi only got ten minutes as the Master on screen, as he was simply incredible, but at least he's got his own audio series.
You're right, Jacobi was fantastic as Professor Yana, and his transition into The Master was perfect, he deserved more screen time prior to Regeneration.
This hast to be one of my favorite moments of Doctor Who. It's superbly directed, there's genuine tension and the cliffhanger is incredible. I really wish Derek Jacobi had more screen time as he just embodies the character of the Master.
Anyone have any theories as to why the doctor says sorry? I’ve always thought it was because he knew the first thing the master would do is try and find gallifrey to see what happened after the time war and that he’d be completely horrified to find that it was no longer there and the time lords wiped out.
According to the doctor who rpg books, the Master can control his regeneration nearly flawlessly. So he basically picked what he'd end up with before starting. Whereas the Doctor never knows what he'll end up with.
1:34 - The Doctor is like "Seriously dude, in my Tardis..." The Master should have known that's just like the one Time Lord rule you just don't break 😂
@@The12thDimension. Well the TARDIS may be conscious but it's a machine that can be operated and considering The Master is a Time Lord he knows exactly what buttons to press 😅 Also the Tardis could see into the future and probably already knew the outcome of The Masters plan (failure) so just let things play out the way they were supposed to.

That deadlock sound effect is possibly the best sound ever used on the show
John Simm scary screaming at 1:30 gives me serious chills and then saying "End of the Universe" Bye Bye! was the best Doctor Who moment of the series

Ohoho the new episode takes it to another level ngl
@Kellsey_Dawn Was that a reference to "The Enemy Within" (1996 attempt featuring Paul McGann)?
Kellsey Dawn that’s the point
he loves it when you use his name
he propably meant his real name. Thats why he is so pissed. The doctor forgot his real name
What I don't understand is that when a time lord regenerates their clothes fit perfectly each time
It seemed to me that nine's jacket was a bit big on ten
+Ethan Ollins I agree that was one of the only times they actually took it into account and kept the same clothes to put on the next actor
*"I don't want to go..."*

Say what you will about the finale, but this was arguably one of the best cliffhangers in the new series.
+Nick Piers Oh I couldn't agree more, the way that the Master got overthrown at the end was weak but this scene and 'The Sound of Drums' were absolutely terrific.
One of many reasons why Simm is the best Master : He's found the character as soon as he appears on screen.
The same can be said for Jacobi's incarnation, too. Both were incredible to watch in this episode.
This is why I love Sacha’s version so much: after that reveal, he cycles through every setting The Master should have. It’s a remarkable bit of acting.
“I’m asking you really properly just stop.. just think!”
“Use my name..”
“Master, I’m sorry…”
I LOVE IT
RTD was unmatched. So glad we’re getting him again
I spoke too soon. His last era was genius but this current one… 😭

Loved this moment. When the master returned, I lost it!
Is it on Audible?
@@JSPena no, but the first episode is free to listen to on Big Finish’s website.

now what about a john simm to michelle gomez???
WorldDamian If only that happened on screen.
We don't see that?
NinjaFawful Afraid not.
WorldDamian WOW! I did not expect someone to say that /sarcasm
WorldDamian Lies, she's not the master. The master is dead and can never come back, too many plot holes if she is.
"Killed by a girl... How inappropriate."
Somehow adds even more to the laughter between John Simms' Master and Missy as they both die in their loop.
The Doctor's hand was in there when the Master regenerated.. Just imagine if he had created a Doctor-Master Timelord metacrisis :o
Misael Melero then we still would’ve had Jacobi as the Master which would mean that the Doctor would have absolutely no chance of beating him
oh hell no lol
Imagine they use that for the 60th anniversary omg
This is one of the 2 best CGI effect regenerations because you actually see the face morph, I loved watching Confidential on this.
Joint first is Eccleston to Tennant as you see the hair change.
+erosion271 The Eccleston/Tennant regeneration and Jacobi/Simm regeneration have a CGI sequence lasting several seconds where the face gradually changes. All the later ones have a similar energy build up, but the actual change occurs instantly or off-screen.
@@TheMoonRover we got a full close-up of the face in Capaldi's regeneration into Whittaker - only part of the regeneration that looked good, honestly.

he screams every time he regenerates because he feels his body being torn apart and rebuilt into a new body.

That regeneration looked absolutely perfect in terms of how the classic themes being updated, should do
It's funny to think that the Master could have take the Doctor's apparence (his hand was on the tardis).
Who's watching after hearing that John Simm's returning in Series 10?
0:17 bruh he was basically asking for him to shut the door

LOL! Good one

Loved this scene. I salute John Simm's (too short in my opinion) time as the Master

I hope you enjoy them, if you haven't checked them out already. He really is absolutely amazing as the Master.
At least the Master had the good grace to not destroy the TARDIS with his regeneration.
1:48 That face you give in a "What the heck did I just watch........." moment.
Two damn fine actors making the Master fill you with fear and since then no one has been better than them. We need more like this again!!!
I love this regeneration scene probably more than any other one seen in the show, so violent and angry, suits The Master.
The best twist in all of Doctor Who
this scene happened a literal decade ago, what the hell happened.
I'd be so pissed off if someone stole my tardis

Simm made such a perfect foil for Tennant; I'm curious to see how he'll stack up when pitched against Capaldi.
I do like Gomez, but I can't help but feel that someone like Jacobi would've been a waaaaay better foe for the Twelfth Doctor
have you noticed when Simm returned as the Master in Capaldi's run, he was sporting the silver tint to his hair and the goatee similar to Roger Delgado's look during the 70's
even having a bit of a serious tone mixed in with his own
I liked him returning, it gave me a reason to like Michelle Gomez's version more. even though I still don't like the idea of Time Lords changing gender, I think it would have been more fitting if Michelle Gomez turned out to be Rani
@@Lantern_Matt_2814 John must've loved Roger's look in the 70s so he copied it.
AGREED OMG
INCREDIBLE TIMES. A TOP master. A TOP doctor. Miss these days so much.
If they're both tops how're they supposed to fuck-
One of my favourite scenes from Tennant's series
Thank you Big Finish for bringing Jacobi back. Finally got to see more than that glimmer of malice once he opened the fobwatch.
You can see the change for 9 to 10 and 12 to 14 as well as 10 to11
In this he just swaps from one to the other between frames barley any morph
It’s looks super weird this one, not sure what you’re talking about.
3:19 I love the look on 10's face, one of the best cliffhangers
0:42 I love utterly scared and desperate The Doctor sounded after The Master locked him out
I love the line "Let's stop and have a nice little chat where I tell you all my plans and you can work out a way to stop me" the way it's poking fun at classic who is hilarious but is very in character for the master
2:06 when school's cancelled on your birthday
Now this was the Master that I enjoyed!! Missy is okay, but there's something more sinister about this version.
That one moment of eye contact and the doctor knew exactly who he was.
3:00 “End Of The Universe! Have Fun! Bye-Bye!” 👋😂
John Simm was born to play The Master, I really wish we got to see more of him in the role.
Nobody can outsmart a Time Lord like another Time Lord.
Bullets and radiation
My favorite regeneration honestly. It's so full on.
At the very midpoint of regeneration (and the thumbnail), the Master REALLY looks like Mark Sheppard.
I KNOW RIGHT. When I saw the thumbnail I was like "Crowley ?" I hope you get that reference.
Roll 3X I do! Originally had that typed, but went with the actor's name in case people didn't get it!
OMG Mark Sheppard as the Master tho! "Hello darling"
2:01 Me when Chris Chibnall has announced that he is leaving with Jodie.
and that russel and David were coming back
The Master: "Killed by an insect ... and a girl."
Missy: "Some of us can afford the upgrade."
Love how when the Doctor regenerates he makes a big song and dance about it, but when the master regenerates he just gets into it on the off.
The Master was always known to be a better Time Lord than The Doctor. His insanity was his inhibitor
According to the doctor who rpg books, the Master can control his regeneration nearly flawlessly. So he basically picked what he'd end up with before starting. Whereas the Doctor never knows what he'll end up with.
2:42
David: I'm sorry
The master:TUFF!!!!
If I ever saw John Simm walking in my direction I would probably turn around and run screaming

The Master should have known that's just like the one Time Lord rule you just don't break 😂
well at least he didnt fucking destroy it 😂😂
I do why wonder why the Tardis, a conscious entity, was totally cool with the Master stealing it and leaving the Doctor behind though
@@roaaoverthinks I mean, he tried his hardest too let's be honest 😂
@@The12thDimension. Well the TARDIS may be conscious but it's a machine that can be operated and considering The Master is a Time Lord he knows exactly what buttons to press 😅
