      The piano’y presets sound really good, sound like they overlayed some samples/wave table tones on top of the usual subtractive synth. That is killer.

    Great stuff Matt. If it inspires you, as you said, then that's all that matters. One massive plus point for the newer model is the upkeep, with maintenance and servicing of those older synths and drum / bass machines being on a yearly or every couple of years and parts dwindling or end of life components that are like hens teeth to find. Big thanks to the PLAP team

    When you choose the legacy models 106 and 60 you need to scroll until you see the preset names change to all (CAPS) that is the true dry presets that align to the models with out using any sounds effects, so dry sounding and more authentic sounding. Otherwise the first 100 or so presets are inspired sounds of the 60&106

    great review, it is a good re-release, and although I haven't tried it yet, it doesn't give me the same inspiration as the 106 can even it has a high noisefloor. Spooky vibes with the long shutter of your second cam.. no light and iso maxed out on the sony?

      Great review?? He played a couple of sounds and basically had no excitment or interest in the product. Like really trying things out instead of trying to emulate a 40 year old synth.. Would you have a doctor use 40 year old technology to save your life? Come on man.. I say if you have the older synths and love them well then use them but this is what today is .I say do over and show what the thing can do.

      @@joro7656 If you want more in depth about the new sounds and posibilities you should watch the Alex ball video to see the new engine and features, but basically this is HW interface to the roland cloud software, so I think the feeling and instant satisfaction of the analog counterpart is most important, and that's what he highlighted for me by doing this review this way. No excitement from me either, although it sounds kind of similar to the original, it is not enough and doesn't give me anything any other modern synth or controller with software cannot give.

      @@MaraldBes I get it. But why do a review just to try to emulate a 106 and at the end of the video say that it was inspiring. Show what it can do I would say. But I do agree with you for sure. Not everyone is going to get there hands on a 106.

    Wonder how it compares to System 8? Does it have the detune/age simulation ability? The system 8 was killer IMHO. Juno-X is on the radar, but hard to not just save up for the fantom 7. (or even 6).

  • @BillVincent
    @BillVincent 3 місяці тому

    Thanks for this review, Matt. Personally I think this synth is absolutely incredible. I also think that if you put any effort into it at all, you can faithfully recreate any sound the 106 makes to the point where in a blind taste test nobody except lucky guessers could tell the difference. The digital vs. analog argument, for me, is ridiculous, and has been since the late 2000's. People also forget that the 106 IS a digital/analog hybrid - it is NOT a "pure" analog synth. DCOs do shape the sound differently than VCOs. Also filter stepping, while an issue with many digital synths, is practically non-existent on this machine, especially to the point where anyone would care - it has 1024 points of resolution in the slider! Methinks people doth protest too much. So, favorite synths for me? I love my Roland Fantom 8. I also love my Reface CS. I also have a Moog Sound Studio which I adore. Rock on!

    I think a comparison of a retro syntherziser to a modern one is not important, because the sounds of the old ones are used in music of back when, people need to understand the vendors want to give a new sound to the patches. one which can be used in contemporary music. But then again since modern music is degraded so much that listeners can't hear complicated chords, or they will link automatically to old music it is a bit of a difficult topic to debate. Imo unless modern music will get a new life and do a rebound with older music composing styles, music will never get to the highs of the once great music of last millenium.... The difference doesn't have to be a huge as classical and pop music of the 80's , but to give a new sound to chords and chord progressions, and cadences withing a progression people or producers could work with effect, because imo that is exactly what is easier to apply to tracks or recordings these days....lyrics and music need to have a certain depth in message and tension to make a song worth while to listen to, or to make it a song you listen to over and over...

    This is basically Roland Cloud in keyboard. I'd rather just subscribe to the cloud and use a MIDI keyboard--you should get identical sounds and pay a lot less.
    It doesn't sound quite like actual analog. It's similar, but definitely NOT the same.

    I have the Roland AE-30 wind synth and I avoid almost all the "realistic" sounds in the ZEN Core and SuperNatural sound engines. But other brands are no better. To think that back in the 80s I was eagerly anticipating the arrival of ROMplers only to find out how naff the majority of sounds were 😢. Almost everything Roland makes anymore flops. I cannot get behind the new Juno. Sounds like every other digital hunk of plastic they've made now for years. System 8 might be the only real quality synth they have made in a long time. Maybe JDXA but then they throw that stupid tiny little orange LCD calculator screen on it that has pages of menu diving.
      Meanwhile Korg, Arturia, Novation, ASM, Sequential, Elektron, dread box, polyend to name just a few, are creating better and better instruments every couple years or so.
      I love old Roland gear but they're sticking to their guns as a detriment. I know nobody seeking out any new Roland products yet everyone I know who is into music production is all over many other brands. Not a coincidence.
