Mixing drums to me- different song is a different story. Everytime i use different tools: different compression, different EQ,or exciter. All the tools i use: are both- direct, and parallel..vBesides separate tools and plugins,- i have a channelstrips, like SSL Drumchannel,or the Harrisson AVA Drum Channel. I like a lotEventide omnipressor,Waves ,and many others. And also have the Sonible Smart EQ,Smart Comp, and Smart Limit. Smart gate - is obviously a great one too,and i really would like to have it ( maybe the wheel of fortune will make this wonderful gift to me?😊 I would be happpy!😊 . Thank you for the great video and demo of this plugin!
@@tshrdrumsfab filter doesn’t have a gate i’m confused what your talking about lol. i literally used fab filter plug-ins more then anything else and there isn’t any fab filter plug-in that can achieve this
I have this and the other SMART series plug ins. I have a pretty recent and powerful pc and what I realize I need to be very selective in using their plugins because if you slap them on many channels, the system gets taxed really fast. They are great but they are power hungry.
Curios Joe, what gate are you replacing. I have the Sonnox Oxford drum gate and it can be pretty darn good but there are some settings that I feel that if i get to deep I can screw up and have to start from scratch. I seem to like this sonible gate because it's not only for drums. Its on sale right now for $79 US. I may have to snag it. Thanks
I prefer to manually edit/silence amp noise. Even with edits or gates, I’m cautious not to kill the tail of the signal. Problems can occur when adding delay, etc.
Hmmm...I wonder what exactly is the smart thing? Everysmart decision of the plugin had the exact same setting, 1 ms Attack, 100ms release, 50% Threshold. The rest has to be adjusted manually just like any other gate...so basically after analyzing, you are left with the same basic default setting. Did I miss something?
I believe the “smart” part is that it detects activity of just the set target. And then you can set the usual gate controls based on that detected activity and not based on the whole signal on the track.
I think we failed to mention how the plugin is analysing spectral information in the background to make its decisions. This is how it can isolate instruments so well. It's actually very smart!
Watch the way it immediately gated the kick from the preset without effecting the sound at all! Then he goes the snare and it removes the kick immediately and he's able to bring the 'drag', as he calls it and it worked great.
Indeed, the presets are very well made so in many instances it works straight away. I’ve been fortunate to use 100’s of gate plug ins and this is one of the most effective and simplest to use.
I like this, but it's not really AI as most people understand it. If it looked at the context of everything else, including the song, the mix, the genre, the other instruments, the style and had some tighter, more detailed parameters and suggestions based on these particulars, then, It would be more AI'ish, although even then, all it would really be doing is querying a much broader keyword\sound definition/ comparison database. Anyway, I found Sonnox Drum Gate to be what I'd be looking for in a gate, although this does the job as well, but this Sonible gate is marketed as AI, which is a bit of a a stretch.
I haven’t personally seen much AI talk on it, although Joe mentioned it here. Ultimately the AI portion would be that it’s learned a ton of info making the presets work very well, much better than the 100’s of other gates I’ve used.

My psychologist: there is not something such as a Ryan Reynold mixing engineer.
