Now I will share the video with my father. Not so sure he will get the same enjoyment out of it. It is funny though. He was over a few weeks ago and I showed him my NIB Blackfoot and you could see him light up a bit as he pawed through the parts. I think he got more out of it then he thinks. Happy days!

Back in 1989, I remember going to the local hobby shop with my late Dad to buy my first ever RC Buggy. Went in with a Grasshopper 2 in mind but went out with a Vanquish instead. So excited building it up that I didn’t sleep that night (that Tamiya manual was just so perfect, makes you want to go on and on and on). Best childhood memory ever! Thanks Dad, May God Bless you!

Thanks 😊 ! I actually saved my own money and the piggy bank was enough for a Grasshopper 2. And my Dad surprised me at the shop by matching my budget for he was impressed with me, saving all I can just to be able to afford one. Little that I know, the investment that I’ve made when I was 11 will reap rewards later in my life when I’ve been asked to explain about planetary gears during my university entrance interview. And the diffs of the Vanquish are just that! They are not your usual bevel gears or ball diffs type…

I remember going into classic models in Carlisle (long since closed)with my parents as I had seen my friends falcon and wanted a buggy for Xmas. It was a toss up between the grasshopper and Marui shogun. I chose the spectacular looking shogun. What a car. Used it every day until an upgraded motor in the form of a technigold melted the gearbox casing due to lack of ball bearings. I have recently managed to acquire a mint never run shogun and this one is a shelf queen and will never leave the collection.
      Such great times.

Then bought a Tamiya catalogue and lying in bed scanning the pages each night, we’d go back to Birmingham each sat and id be in Beatties with my dad falling love with all the cars and motors, parts etc loved it.. then on Christmas Day I got my first car a Hornet and me and dad building it was just brilliant never forgot that and then went on to save and buy lots of other cars over the years and now I’m back into it 😀😀😀😊 and loving it 😍 thanks for the channel Glenn love it mate.. awesome vid Keith

... That's haunting how close to my story that was.. I kept pestering my dad so much.. he drove to Nottingham while he was at work.. went in the store. Used their phone because it's pre mobile... Called me to tell me how much this was all going to cost... Then when he got home he lost his head to find it was all in thousands of pieces.... It took me 2 days to build it.. my friend turned up for the maiden run.. and with my dad at my side I took my little pumpkin down the road at full speed, and then hit the steering.... It never looked the same again... Dad went bonkers.. that's why now at nearly 50 years old.. my new Chrome edition pumpkin is driven with a lot more respect...R.I.P dad...you did a good job..now I understand.👍🇬🇧😎

Keith and I have a similar story. Except mine was a Falcon not a Lunchbox. Brings back a flood of memories. Took my dad several days to build that kit for me after work. When I was 35 I bought a Falcon NIB and finally was able to build one for myself. It took me 4 hours start to finish to put it together. I thought it was going to take me ages. My dad laughed when I told him how long it took me to build it. I have several Re-Re’s now and will always be a Tamiya head for life! Great channel!!! Thanks for reliving these great childhood memories.

Hi Glenn these are classic memories relived and one of the reasons I really love watching your channel.
Having grown up with Tamiya being 'the kids man toy' - and remembering the original RC slogan - 'Toys They're Not' which I have carried into my adult life. my first Tamiya was the original short wheelbase Wild Willy which I remember building on mum's kitchen table which I hijacked for 2 full days. These are memories we never forget and I was 12 yo back in 1983.
I'm Aussie born and bred and wanted to share a video a fellow Aussie mate of mine did 5 years ago when he took on a road trip to Australia's 'Red Centre' known to tourists as Uluru, or Ayres Rock. It's a classic video which includes stunning footage of the Australian Red Centre located in the Northern Territory. It has running footage of some of Tamiya's classic 4WD buggies in full flight running on Salt lakes, Red Earth and Red Rock - you will find the Hotshot, the Trial Blazer and the Fire Dragon. He's has not had a lot of views since posting on UA-cam, but your viewing audience may love the sights and sounds of the great Aussie outback as the video is expertly done and he's called it Tamiya's 4 x 4 Outback Adventure. Please enjoy and if you think it's worth sharing on you channel I'm sure it would be a winner which your viewing audience who love the classics.
Great work Glenn love your content every time. ua-cam.com/video/es7WU6aYQ04/v-deo.html

Bought my first rc Tamiya Grasshopper from Gems hobby shop in Waipahu Hawaii in 1987. I had fun running the Grasshopper in the neighborhood and at Ala Moana Park.
2 years later I move to California and got a job at my local hobby shop and there my rc car collection became more. Blackfoot, Clodbuster, Frog, Midnight Pumpkin, kyosho Ultima, Kyosho motorcycle, Two Rc10's , one gold pan and later the rc10 with stealth gear. Also added the Losi Jrx2 to the collection.

Brings back memories of picking up my first Hornet at Beatties in Liverpool with my mum when I was 14. It felt like time stood still for a few weeks until Christmas day when I finally got my hands on it. It started an obsession which I still haven't kicked at 47. I restored the Hornet in the early 2000s and am glad I still have it as a cherished memory of family who have since passed on. I feel sorry for kids today who will probably never experience the same kind of wonder and excitement around RC that we had in the eighties, my four year old son included.

Awww Glenn my first proper rc car was a Tamiya Grasshopper 2 "Super G" that I got second hand out the local newspaper aged 12. I swear Glenn, words cannot even begin to do justice for how incredible it felt getting that car christmas morning!!! Oh my goodness those feelings of unmatched excitedness, sheer wonder and joy of ripping that car around christmas day, are utterly priceless and thus begun a life long love of the hobby!! I would pay mega money to feel those emotions again mate!! Incredible!! Thanks to Kieth for an amazing, very relatable description of his childhood memories, that only those who have experineced said emotions and memories, can truly understand and appreciate...Wes, Liverpool UK.

My 1st new RC car was a Schumacher top cat £210 just for the kit in the late 80s, then of course motor- batteries and electrics which I went for futaba attack R electrics, and remember seeing my dad squint aggressively when he then realised my brother wanted the same car with all the same stuff🤣 it must of been close to £1000. My first rc car in 1979 was a "Sand Scorcher"...payed for & built by myself (I was the highest payed apprentice mechanic in Oz) but that's another story! It took only two evenings to assemble & paint...that's how keen I was. First turn of a wheel & I stacked it, & repaired it, stacked it, repaired it etc. Amongst my most memorable moments of the hobby. I'm still stacking & repairing, & still having fun. When I got my 1st Grasshopper I was 13 years old. I knew the kit, the radio, the batteries and charger were way too much money to ask for the kit AND everything else. We didn’t have a lot of money growing up. So I waited for Christmas to come around, this was the same year I discovered these cars in the local hobby shop, & I made a deal with my parents. If they would get me the Grasshopper car kit-I would get a job or cut lawns or something so I could pay for everything else myself. I basically went halfsies with my parents to get this. That spring I helped my buddy with his paper route and he cut me in 50/50 & I did that until I got everything I needed and put that thing together myself that summer. That was awesome running that Grasshopper all that summer! Even took the Grasshopper to the beach that year for our vacation! LOL! Thanks for that video. Brought back some good memories since I’m 51 years old now.

Age 51 this year for me. My first was '87. After obsessing for a year with magazines and such, my 17th birthday mom took me to hobby store and I got the Falcon kit and all the trimmings. Best day ever It was my red rider bbgun equivalent. I eventually got into racing and Rc10's, but that first Falcon kit was so epic. Then I got into airplanes and real cars and put rc cars down for literally 30 years. Kept all my old kits though. Sadly I sold the falcon way back when but honestly it was shot anyway. I drove the life out of it.
So, thanks to channels like this one and rckicks driving the enthusiasm, I've gone rc crazy lately with tanks, quadcopters, airplanes, and now back to cars. Last week I just bought the porsche rsr tt02 kit with all the fixins. Going to build my first tamiya kit since I was 17!
Some of these modern cars are amazing BUT, you dont build them anymore. The Tamiya kit building experience is second to none. Therefore it's got to be a Tamiya kit for me.
    Cheers all.

    Great vid, Glenn.
Similarly, I saw another kid at school ('86, IIRC) who had a Hornet and was amazed at how quick that thing was. It was an immediate, "gotta have it," moment. Lots of lawns were cut that summer on what became a major money hole for me! 30+ years on and there is still vestiges of that original car sitting on my desk in front of me right now; a re-work of that car in progress. Lots of fun has been had with both building and running various cars over the years, and my son has shown some enthusiasm for it as well. Sharing good times is what it's all about. Thanks, sir.

My mother somehow found a way to make my dreams come true with a grasshopper on Christmas Eve😍. So this one if for all the special moms out there😘! Great video down memory lane. Back in 1989 I was excited that my Mom was going to buy me my first RC car for my birthday. So I meticulously looked up and down the Tower hobby catalog and narrowed it down to two. The Blackfoot or the Royal Crusher. I choose the Crusher. It was a regrettable decision that still kicks me in the butt to this day. I was heart broken when that truck literally fell apart not long after I put it together. I think I spent more time trying to fix it than running it. My Mom seeing me frustrated, disappointed, and sad missing out on driving with my friends ordered me up what I should have gotten the first time, the Tamiya Blackfoot. I was so excited to open that box when it arrived. I remember staying up all night putting that kit together just so I could tear up the dirt with my friends the next day. That truck gave me so many great memories and started my love for this hobby. I never let that truck go no matter how much I broke it. It ended up being a personal connection between me and Mom. I still have it to this day along with the receipt the day my Mom purchased it for me. It sits on display as my favorite shelf Queen and first Tamiya. It stands as a reminder of all those times she spent taking me to the hobby shop looking for upgrades or just looking to see what was new.

WOW! Lovely to put a face (Ugly Mug! Haha!!) to the name Keith (& Family!). What a great guy and such a generous contributor to this amazing channel. Massive thank you from me Keith.Reminds me how great my dad was. Thinking back, he wasn't that old or well off and yet still bought me a Midnight Pumpkin (The superior of the Lunchbox/Pumpkin family, forgive me, I'm obviously biased!) and all the necessary add-ons, which weren't cheap, he really put himself out buying them for me, and shamefully, I guess, I didn't really appreciate it as much back then as I should have. Thanks dad R.I.P... I'd love to see Keith's collection, it looks great from the little I saw.

Wow, that was an awesome clip, and definitely reminded me of myself when I was younger. My first RC kit was a Boomerang, got it from Hamleys in London in early November 1987, it was something like £165 for the deal. Got it home, only to find one screw bag was missing and I had a duplicate of one of the other screw bags. About a week later I sorted it, built the buggy, and fell in love with the hobby and have been ever since. I started racing this year for the first time in about 15 or 16 years, and it''s been brilliant catching up with old friends, and making some new ones too along the way. It's channels like this that keep me going and help keep me interested, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart mate👍👍

My first proper RC was a Kyosho V-oneS nitro in 1999. My dad didn't realise what i was getting us in to! My birthday present ended up being £280 all in and we broke it all the time. I remember as a kid i wanted an RC nitro car, like Keith i pestered and nagged and i eventually got one but i always needed my Dad to help me with starting it because it used to intimidate me. I couldn't go anywhere without my Dad if i wanted to use my car, so naturally it spent a lot of it's time in the box and not going anywhere. But when we did we'd go up to the school and have a blast up there. I was always so cautious not to break anything. Fun times and good memories. Turns out I am still in love with RC :D

I remember getting my first rc car Christmas 88, a Monster Beetle. I was ten at the time and was so excited when I had unwrapped it and couldn’t wait to get it built. Dad helped me build it….well he did it all really as at ten years old it was too much for me, good times spent with Dad building and running it and as I got older he bought me a number of Tamiya cars. Really want to get another beetle to build as Dad isn’t too well at the moment and would love to have one back to as a sort of homage to those special times.

My first rc was a fast attack vehicle back in about 85ish my dad brought one home from work as a customer couldn't afford the plumbing he'd just had completed he gave my dad the buggy. Including all the other bits I took it up the scrubs and started going around with it man it felt so fast I sold it for a terra scorcher around 1990 / 91 ish and kept that until 95 but this was without a doubt the best Christmas present ever..
I didn't get another car until 2003 when I got the Ford focus RS which I hated it wasn't a buggy but with i hadnt sold it for £30 to a rc shop as it was mint.. ..
Then last year a mate said he'd brought a tamiya hornet omg I didn't know they still made them I now own far to many retro buggys and trucks the nostalgia is incredible just opening the box and smelling the tires it's a little flash back to my childhood...
Keep up the good work honestly love the videos..

Great to see people with similar experiences, love the video Glenn. I shared some of my 80s racing pics on the Facebook group and was blown away by the feedback. My first car was a Hornet c1985, second hand from a model shop in Windsor, then Hotshot, PB Mini-Mustang, Schumacher Cat and a Mid-Optima, learnt so much about vehicle engineering and practical skills building and making them. Would love to get along to an event in UK and meet similar fans.

The memories come flooding back, I was probably around 15 when I got my first RC, taken to a local RC shop to pick one out, I wanted something different to what my friends had and went for a Thunder Dragon as it was so different with it's angular shape and 3 shock setup, it probably lasted just over a year until I lost signal and it drove straight under the wheel of an on comming car due to the manual speed controler being stuck on full forward, fast forward 6 months and I had saved enough from my weekend jobs to buy myself a new car and ordered a Big Wig through an advert in one of the RC mags in the UK, my Grandma wrote the cheque and I gave her the money, that car also ended up damaged and is unfortunately no more but nearly 30 yes later I stepped back into the world of Tamiya with farther daughter build of a Plasma Edge 2 and then a Dark Impact for myself.

That's rad. I have a first Tamiya car story of my own, but I also have a really recent one. After getting back into r/c a couple years ago, I got my first M chassis car to run with my buddy who's taken a deep dive into that particular type of car. I got the Tamiya Karmenn Ghia, with it's beautiful body on the M-06 chassis. I got it all assembled and painted up in Tamiya Metallic Copper and it looked awesome. Took it for it's maiden run and drove it full speed into a concrete curb. Now that beautiful Ghia is split right up the center of both front fenders and the perfectly scale bumper is destroyed. Oh well, it took me straight back to being twelve in 1985 and getting my first Grasshopper with my hard earned allowance...

Great story. Thanks to both of you for sharing. My folks bought me a toy grade car back in the day (I’m exactly the same age as you guys-47 going on 11). It was fun but not the same as the Tamiya cars my friends had. I knew my dad would never be into getting me an expensive RC car so I didn’t bother pestering him. We did other things together so that was cool. Luckily one friend or another always let me have a go with one of their buggies so I still have good memories of driving those classic cars. Just finished the final details on my re-release Grasshopper last evening and took it out for a quick rip under the street light. Luckily I have some self-control and didn’t crash it on the first run!

My 1st kit was an Avante 2001 for Christmas (or birthday ?) in the mid 90´s. I showed my mom the Avante in the Tamiya guide book. Unfortunately she mixed it up with the 2001 Avante. I remember being quite disappointed when I ran the car off-road at a nearby lake. It was much slower than in the advertisement videos and the motor was boiling afterwards. I also remember the 1st run in front of our flat. The tires were super grippy and it was a blast to run this good looking thing :) After the tread was worn down on the tires and I had some problem with the diff/gear box, it ended up in the basement for many many years (as I got hooked on RC raceboats at that time). I sold the 2001 Avante 20 years later on Ebay and got good money for it. 3 years ago I was blown away when I gifted myself the Re-Re Avante !!! Painted it orange metallic and it is a Shelf Queen now to remind me of the GOLDEN ERA OF RC :)

What’s funny Glen is how many memories I have of RC and yet I’ve only just started building my first kit only last April.
It’s funny that my dad got me into model building when I was about 9 or 10 and I remember the hobby shop I went to used to have this BIG RC section I would wonder off into after I would stop at the train display. I would always go into the RC section simply because I thought they were cool how they were painted and just seeing all the people who had them and thinking “someday, I’m going to be that guy”.
Fast forward to last year and buying my first car, my TT-02. I remember all those memories of me and my dad building models and I just got super stuck into it and it’s a car that makes me smile every time I take it down off the shelf.
Ironically, all my hop-ups for my car I bought from the same hobby store that I mentioned earlier, though they’ve moved into a much smaller space.
Anyway Glen, I think a fan submission compilation video would be great from time to time. It would be cool for you to see other peoples cars and the general excitement they get from building them.
Massive shout out to Keith on this spontaneous clip because he just spawned a new segment. Lol
Thanks again Glen and I’ll see you in the next video!

this video was super cool , myself am 47 next month and am deeply touched by these type of memories long story short being bought up by only MUM and her working fulltime was sorta hard to afford all the stuff boys would love to own at that age going back to 1986 i was 11, already had a BMX a H.O Trainset called the Snowy Mountian Express, Commodore 64 Computer with mega cassettes galore and with going to all camps and day trips with school , was involved in karate, soccer, scouts money was tight as you could imagine lucky for me i suppose i was an only child dad took off before i was born and had never seen nor heard from him!! so it was just mum and did she do her dammed hardest to make sure i didnt miss out ! then kids all around started getting these remote controlled cars Tamiya,Kyosho,Marui etc, myself wasn't able to get a kit as they where priced really high back in the 80's especially for a single mum paying it all and food on the table too it wasnt easy but i was happy with the "Metro Jet Hopper or Turbo Hopper" depending where your from and for me that was Fantastic all in red , spare tire on the back roof and two speed high and low on the back of the gear box and the turbo on the control it was still quite expensive because we had to buy the AA batteries and the quick charger for it and the 9V batt for the transmitter but i was totally wrapped to have it and then at the end of the year i ended up asking for another one as i had by then trashed the first and broke the front suspension which held the front wheel in place so that was now only good for parts so i got a second one only in RED this time friends around had cars like The Marui Hunter, The Frog, the Pegasus and so on and at the local rc track there was the lot all the cars from 1982-1986 and now 35 yrs later i have almost 100 rc cars and ALL the Ones I used to drool over-thanks Glenn and Kieth for this Awesome Flashback Down Memory Lane and A MASSIVE Thank you to you MUM , you where and still are the Greatest Of Women and Many hugs and Kisses :-))
