I was told this story by my high school mythology teacher. It became my favorite story of those legends. Insanely hyped to see it brought to screen in a way similar to how I imagined it would be
If you haven't seen it yet, I wanted to warn you that this film isn't a retelling as much as it is a part of the centuries long conversation over arthurian legend. It takes major detours but is still absolutely amazing and even more so if you take the time to learn more about Gawain's character evolution over the centuries.
this is not part of the legends of Arthur, it is a fake hijacked story that isn't about that. It's just using the names in order to make a different movie and sell it to people who don't know that yet.
@@theCosmicQueen while you're entitled to your opinion, I disagree! This is thematically very faithful to the source material, and each of its narrative decisions is rooted firmly in the source text. Looks like this upholds the true *weirdness* of Arthurian/medieval legend. A lot of adaptations try to make these stories clean-cut, sensible and realistic, but that’s far from the spirit. Arthurian stories either need to be over-the-top comedy or weird visionary crap like this.

Green Knight is 1 year old! Paving issues aside it's worth the wait Director David Lowery mixes fantasy and old English lore in a fantastical tale based on the poem Wonderfully crafted, such a surreal visual journey, beautifully filmed, and Dev Petel gives a top of the mark performance More of a cerebral experience than a straight up knights adventure A nice re-invention of the Arthurian legend of Sir Charwin's journey A lot of scenes make this very dreamlike or nightmarish Plenty of symbolism throughout A story of a man discovering his faults It's a bit long and polarizing but still an enchanting wonder

To all the people complaining about Patel as Gawain: By the 12th century we have court records of Saracen warriors settled in southwest England, and certainly in the 8th century there is numismatic evidence of contact between England and Moorish Spain. The filmmakers have made a reasonable extrapolation . And I hear you say " Boohoo but Arthurs fictional stories take place between the 4th and 6th century . " Well , there is also a half - black Arthurian Knight in the most important Medieval Germanic Arthurian Myth . His name is Feirefiz and he is the half - brother of Sir Parcival. Also Patel is a British man and citizen , portraying a medieval knight with a skin complexion only slightly darker than the average Caucasian - a weathered look a knight could acquire from long journeys. And in case you forgot: it's based on a fictional 14th century fantasy romance poem full of dragons, witches and green men. And male bisexuality . I'd say quit whining.
I get a feeling this will be like “where the wild things are” and a lot more content will be added than was in the old English poem - either way it looks good - shame Sean Connery can’t do a cameo
“One of these days in your travels, a guy is going to show you a brand new deck of cards on which the seal is not yet broken. Then this guy is going to offer to bet you that he can make the jack of spades jump out of this brand new deck of cards and squirt cider in your ear. But, son, do not accept this bet, because as sure as you stand there, you’re going to wind up with an ear full of cider”
The trailer director really mastered his craft, everything about this trailer, sequences, plot explanation, music, everything about it was just amazing..

I am going to see it again tomorrow.
Definitely went into the theater expecting a typical summer movie, so when it ended my friend turned to me and said "Uh, what did we just watch?" What most of the adaptations make us forgot is that King Arthur is not always the central character in all the myths of the Arthurian cycle. And if you look closely to the cinematography: 0:28, 0:58, 1:20, 2:10, 2:14, ect... the light in the movie is often bichromic: yellow for representing Gawain and green-blue to embody the Green Knight.
The “this movie is pretentious” comments are hilarious. You guys realize this is based on a 14th century poem. It’s made to be in conversation with what have now been hundreds of years of analysis and interpretation of this piece. This looks incredible. I remember reading Gawain and the Green Knight in college and couldn’t believe it had never been adapted to film before. Its a perfect example of the hero’s journey
I think it has been adapted in 1984:
"Sword of the Valiant: The Legend of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" with Sean Connery.
@@terriblereading7586 And in 1973, "Gawain and the Green Knight" directed by Stephen Weeks. There is a very short clip on UA-cam.
I don't remember naked hairless giants though... 🤨 The story was awesome already without some of this added stuff.

To quote the original poem:
"Sumwhyle wyth wormez he werrez, and with wolues als,
Sumwhyle wyth wodwos, þat woned in þe knarrez,
Boþe wyth bullez and berez, and borez oþerquyle,
And ETAYNEZ, þat hym anelede of þe heȝe felle;"
The poem refers to foes of Camelot using a Germanic term for giant: the Middle English etayn, from the Old English eoten and cognate with the Old Norse jötunn.
In modern translations they are not always referred to as Giants but as Ogres or such but the original text makes it pretty clear: Gawain meets dragons, wolves, wild men, bulls, bears, boars and Etaynez/Giants.
@@terriblereading7586 probably what they had in mind, but "giant" and "ogre" are just two possible latinate translations of eoten, and "ogre" is arguably even better, as "eoten" does not necessarily indicate gigantic stature, it's apparently a term for a "voracious monster" of some description, for which "ogre" is probably a better approximation than "naked hairless giant".

My first introduction to the Green Knight was that animated film “Franklin and the Green Knight” back in 2000 when I was a kid. LOL
this is not part of the legends of Arthur, it is a fake hijacked story that isn't about that. It's just using the names in order to make a different movie and sell it to people who don't know that yet.
@@theCosmicQueen while you're entitled to your opinion, I disagree! This is thematically very faithful to the source material, and each of its narrative decisions is rooted firmly in the source text. It's a creative adaptation of the story's soul, rather than a scene-for-scene retelling of the poem, and personally, I think it's beautiful!

And if you look closely to the cinematography: 0:28, 0:58, 1:20, 2:10, 2:14, ect... the light in the movie is often bichromic: yellow for representing Gawain and green-blue to embody the Green Knight.
