  • What’s the trick to putting a heavy sit on top kayak on the roof of an SUV? Planning. Here’s how I put my Vibe SeaGhost 130 on the roof of my Ford Expedition.

Finally, a ‘full size SUV’ example! I have the same vehicle, as well a heavy sit on fishing kayak. All other videos seem to feature Subaru Outback sized wagons so it’s nice to see an option for a vehicle my size. Thanks!

Haha. I feel your pain. I went through the same thing when I started car topping on my Tahoe and obviously now do it on my Expedition. No videos to be found. Thanks for checking it out. Feel free to share it if you would like.

I have an Expedition, and I've been looking into how to carry a light, 10' sit-in kayak on the factory rack. Doesn't seem that complicated, but I've wondered if it's best to carry it upside down or not?
Honestly, if I lay the passenger seat down, there's almost 11' from the closed liftgate to the dash, and it's almost 3' wide between the door and console, for short trips, which is all I'm really planning, I could put the kayak inside and skip any loading drama.
Just curious. I don't want to look like an idiot driving around lol.

If you can toss it inside, to me, that would be the best option. I think ideally, if you can carry your yak upside down, it is probably the best way to do it because it helps prevent some compression to the hull from the roof rack and obviously keeps rain out. However, I always carry mine right side up just because it is easier for me and I haven’t had any issues in tens of thousands of miles of car topping. Even on my trailer I carry them right side up. Good luck to you and let me know how it works out. I also might have some more Expedition videos coming up in the future that you would be interested in, so keep an eye out.
