Hi. Nice video. Can I use this for commercial purposes to teach people how to re-enter a sit-on-top kayak? Thanks!

What about paddles and fishing rods etc? Should they be tied to the kayak with bungees at all times?

No need to tie anything down with my method but it is a good idea to tie things down and put stuff in plastic bags just incase.

And if your legs don’t float? I have very little natural buoyancy.

If you reach across to the other side with the arm nearest the seat you will naturally come onto the boat facing forward. This also help you get your weight onto the boat so you don't simply pull it back over once again. I have had sit-on-top kayaks for 30 years and have extensive experience kayaking in the ocean and have more than once been glad to be able to get back into the boat in paddling position before the next wave hit. Ending up facing backwards is not optimum, to say the least. Your demonstration is a bit incomplete because the paddle is seemingly secured to the boat. What to do with the paddle? First of all, hang onto it! You would rather keep a hold on the paddle than try to hang onto the boat. It can work well to put the paddle between you and the kayak as you reenter so that it is right next to you as you get in. You can't really hang onto it because you need both hands to get back aboard. Some people like to leash the paddle, but this can be a problem in surf because you can wrap it around your neck at the worst possible time. Flipping over--which is inevitable when kayaking in surf--is a reason to make sure everything, you water bottle, try bag, etc., is attached. I ended up in an impromptu surfing session last summer and lost my life jacket because I was too stupid to be wearing it and didn't have it attached. Luckily my small dry bag with my phone was in the pocket of my backrest.

I would NEVER get into a Kayak from the side. I taught myself how to leave and enter a canoe while using it to do some snorkle diving. My technique uses basically the same body control but enter from the end of the craft and since a canoe is much less stable can easily fill with water than your example my method should work for any small craft. I was able to get in and out of my canoe without letting any water into the canoe beside what was on my body, keeping the canoe mostly dry.

Have you ever tried to get into a kayak from the side? it works well if you use proper technique. I learned how to get into a canoe when I got canoeing merit badge in the Boy Scouts. You're right. Go over the end. But a sit on top kayak is different. My wife and I have six of them and have kayak extensively in the ocean and you need to know how to get back in using a technique much like shown in this video so you can get back in before the next wave hits.
