As a retired airborne soldier, I can confirm we aimed to land ass first, kind of like a cannon ball, to give off a shock wave. Best way of stunning the enemies! (Yes I am joking)
One of the best graphical games of this kind of style I have seen you play for some time. I don't usually comment, but felt that this one deserved one.
It's me again! With a random technical information ;-) The difference between sprite and a texture is minimal. Sprite is an "image" that is applied to a 2D plane (imagine a page of a paper). While a texture is a "image" itself. So in 2D games almost all that you see are sprites. While in 3D games you see 3D objects with a texture applied to them (modern games use multiple layers of textures + shaders and call that "material").
Interesting. I don't like the artstyle at all. It's all smeary, blurry and the "pixels are off". It gives the impression that the artist isn't very good at pixel art and is hiding it by making everything blurry with effects and filters.
Hey Splat, i know in many games the player attacks stuns enemies, so you learn to just power through, but in this type of game you should never attack when the enemy is attacking you, dodge or parry first
They really held onto the zombie thing for way way too long. I've read a theory that zombies are popular in times of prosperity and vampires are popular in times of economic hardship. With Bidenflation putting everyone into the poorhouse and babies literally starving to death now....i expect a lot more vampire content for the next few years
04:20 nice, ichor...in ancient times, ichor was the blood of the gods itself, in our times it is the "rotting blood" found inside cadavers; since this character is an undead, she fits right in between both extremes of that term's meanings.
The art looks great but more importantly, so does the gameplay. It feels… Fitting. The animations feel weighty enough to feel realistic but not at all clunky and the movement seems to be snappy in all the right ways.
lol fun fact @9:53: "landing assfirst" in the Army is called "Your 4th point of contact" It's actually the 4th thing in the sequence that is supposed to hit the ground
About not being comfortable to use Arrow keys to move, I remember having reversed problem in old Spiderman game, movement on arrows and all the abilities on the right number keys, my solution was to cross hands, right hand on arrows and left hand on abilities. Even now pressing Arrow keys using left hand is uncomfortable, while left hand on WASD is fine
It's so convoluted in it's lore. It's so hard to understand what's going on. And all the conversations with the gargoyles and the cat, leaves questioning the hell is going on, too. It looks like be interesting but it's just a bit too confusing for me. TY for presenting it though.
I have no issues with either side when it comes to keyboard controls. I played emulators for years on keyboard using arrow keys for movement and the face buttons on the alphanumeric keys. And obviously WASD is a common thing for pretty much any PC game that uses keyboard for movement so everyone is pretty much forced into learning that.
this looks like a classic platformer but its done well, but at the same time brings nothing new to the table so the game is depending on a nice and interesting plot to keep the player engaged.
The animation looks fantastic for this game. Liking the attacks and and movement of the both the character and enemies. Seems to have a good story from what we watched so far. Color palate is pretty nice for the feeling that I can see that the developers are going for, but agree with Splat that it could use some more color. Def going on the wishlist.
I use AutoHotKey for games that don't let you remap keys. I don't use WASD in my games - just my preference - and AutoHotKey is great for me. I have several icons on my desktop for individual games and I just double click one before I play.
Huh... this thing with the hands and movement control... and I thought I'm an odd ball... well I just cross my hands and play like a cultist or something xD
I've only ever heard "ichor" pronounced like eye-core or eye-kur. First time I've heard it as "ick-ur." Then again, I've only ever heard it pronounced by people like me who've probably only ever encountered it in print and never heard an actual English authority pronounce it. I ain't lookin' it up to see which is the "real" way now, that's for sure. Too little mystery left in the world. o_O; EDIT: I lied, I couldn't help myself. It's eye-core.
I pronounced it ICK-er forever because I'd only ever seen it in print. A couple months ago I was watching a DnD stream and heard EYE-core for the first time, positive they were saying it incorrectly. Looked it up and discovered that you're absolutely right. ICK-er is just so much easier to say. With Splat on team ICK-er, I think I'll stick with it. :D
I have pretty much zero ability to play this kind of game, have zero twitchy power fingers but the story seem interesting. Interesting weird dark writing.
This game is wearing its Death’s Gambit inspiration on its sleeve. The UI, the menus, and the look of pickups are all extremely familiar. Heck, even the main character feels a little bit Endless in her appearance. I might keep an eye on this game. The animations and the huge amount of depth in the parallax backgrounds looks amazing, but my main concern - as is the case with all of these dark fantasy, combat-oriented platformers / metroidvania games - is how it handles exploration. Maybe I’ve been spoiled and have habitually set expectations, but after playing Hollow Knight and Salt & Sanctuary, I just feel like I don’t see that same level of discovery and sense of wonder that those games had in many of these other ones. I don’t really see it in this game’s demo, or in Blasphemous, or frankly even Death’s Gambit (which I did play). And at least for me, that’s a _huge_ part of the experience.
I find the swing animation a bit lacking. It seem to do the 'fastest gun the West' routine, where the sword is at your side and immediately back again with very little indication that it swung. It feels off. Also, you're essentially a clay golem, but, your breath fogs? I think they missed the boat on playing up the clay golem aspect. The character models are pretty muddy. They look like someone composed it in high detail and pulled a blur brush over the various elements of the same color. So, rather than looking like a drawing in pixel art, it seems to imitate it by being 'artificially' low-fi. It could work if managed carefully, but given how smudgy the background, your character and the enemies are, it comes out all looking kind of samey. I think they missed the boat on this as well. They don't seem to really work with the clay aspect: If you started off in full detail and got smudgy as you took damage, that would make sense. Maybe enemies with blades could slice off limbs that you had to pick up and weld back with your healing power. Maybe blunt weapons could destroy a limb completely and you'd have to regenerate it. Rather than your breath fogging (?), puffs of dust and gravel as you and your opponent hit would be neat. Instead of poison on hit (how do you poison clay?), it would be interesting if you could enhance various aspects of being non-organic. Maybe you could become less flexible, being more resistant to slicing damage, or more flexible, being able to make your arm in to a javelin/whip (i.e. T-1000), or reducing the impact of blunt damage by absorbing and flowing with it. There could be a middle ground gravel tree. Perhaps you could get all Elden Ring-ish and have the choice of integrating your enemies' parts or powers, but each time losing some of your own identity and soul. They somewhat hint at something similar, but there seems to be no downside for getting a new ability. The spite level seems half-done, too. It could be just early game, less mechanics, however it would be interesting to have a D3 Demon Hunter-type system where as you build spite your soul gets stronger (maybe giving you more mana or HP), but if you spend it, you gain a power or something, but your connection to your golem body weakens. If there were a lot of statues around, you'd always wonder if any would be enemies that could come alive/wake up as you pass. They might also tunnel. Anything not organic could be an enemy. You could also learn the same tricks... merge with and walk through walls .. melt into the ground and reform somewhere else ... rather than summoning, form minions out of the earth. As it is it looks like a nice Metroidvania tech demo with a dash of Elden Ring and a hint of Devil May Cry, but it really needs to play to its strengths, and that's not being yet another Metroidvania, it's leaning on the unique interactions and tradeoffs the setting it creates.
This all looks so stylish and solid. My only worry is it seems just too similar to other titles, especially Blasphemous. But that elaborate skill tree of vampire abilities looks promising. Gonna wishlist.

Glad to see this one covered! I played the demo during the steam festival and oh man does it feel just as smooth as you say.

The animation is Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth levels of smooth. Holy crap.

20:16 Did anyone figure out yet, what this build-up mechanic is? Maybe there some timestamp you can point me to, where it is in effect?
I think it's referring to the stuff at 14:10. So the build-up mechanic for the hammer is stun, sword is bleed, and harpoon is vulnerability.

18:52 seriously need a parry counter... what's next? Perry the parrypus? And it's just a platypus with a sword?
Is that animation for the characters mocap or made by hand? It's ridiculously good.
Highly doubt they'd be doing mocap for tiny low-res pixel art. Hand drawn animation frames look just as smooth as long as you use enough frames
