That has to be the most badass thing I've ever seen a motorsports driver, let alone a NASCAR driver has ever done! He literally played the race like it was Burnout or Need for Speed! Respect my man!
Coastaku.......Try NASCAR 2005, it was the Martivsville race in that game that inspired this real life NUT CLANGING MOVE!, by the Florida Watermelon Farmer!...... Up in the booth Dale Jr. even said this was a 'Video Game Based Move' as well!

Chastain will go down in the nascar history book for this awesome feat. It reminds me of something that Dale Sr. would have tried. Gutsy move that worked out. Hats off to Martinsville for having such a great wall for him to use.
One of the Biggest Balls moves I have ever seen in Nascar and I got my first exposure in the early 60s on Wide World of Sports. My first at track was this little short dirt track they call the Grove these days. My dad was wrenching a friends jalopy until my step - mom cut him off back before I started school in 58. A lot of history at these smaller tracks and Nobody's ever gonna forget Ross and this MOVE.
Love the story. It’s really sad how these short tracks are becoming forgotten even by the locals in their area. Grundy County Speedway in Illinois is a tiny little track in the middle of corn fields and I’m 90% sure Earnhardt raced there a few times way back in the day.

@@debbiebernhardt5406 The rule wasn't changed. What Nascar said was they would be pointing towards an already existing rule for future incidents. Essentially what they admitted too was that it should have probably been a penalty at the time, but officials did not call it and they didn't want to change it after the fact, but officials have now been informed that the move should be penalized moving forward.

While I wasn't a fan of the move as I'm more of a racing purist, it was one of the all time craziest moves in motorsports history. We were all in shock watching it live, we didn't understand what happened at first. I think if you are a racing fan that saw it live at the track or at home, you'll never forget it.
Small correction- he didn't need to finish ahead of Denny Hamlin, he just needed to gain 2 positions. I believe he gained 4 with this move and did end up ahead of Hamlin.
at the time he didnt know that which made him finishing in front of Hamlin all the more impressive and insane, in the moment thinking thats what he needed.

I wasn't a fan of the move,... at all,... racing organization's spend million's on barricade's to protect driver's safety,... who are complete victim's of circumstance,... and some "nut job" come's along and decide's he going to use that technology,... to simply place in a race,.... it was a kamikaze move,... which could have takin' his live and indangered other's,... people longed to be entertained,... at any cost,... I find it very hard to "idolize" the move,... the driver,... or the fan's that thought it was cool,.... someone who has never drivin are car in their life,... could have done it,... it took "O" talent,..... Dale Earnhardt Jr. got it right saying,..." he needs to get right... with himself",..... I say,... Because people will try it every race. And the only way combat it is to get in front of them, which will destroy your own car and risk injury. The end of the race would just be a demolition derby. The ban was needed.
It was going to destroy a lot of race cars if they kept it in. They let Ross Chastain's stats stand as a salute to the move (and because it wasn't against the rules at the time). But they're not going to let it happen again to avoid a total demolition derby that could injure both drivers and fans.

The rule was newly changed to enforce that move since what he did was an action hardly repeated easily. So it had steps to take for enforcement.
