If you constantly work on yourself and remain focused, there is no time to worry and talk about other people. This is gold advise
Its gods advise. Jk but sorta is also
The ultimate MGTOW. Be the best man you can be and don't chase anything else.
I'd go even so far as to say that this is good advice.
Amen
It's none of my business what people say about me or what they think of me. I was told this and it changed my life.
I'm reminded of a day in 97 when I watched dag crawl from the saloon to his cross country skis.
He couldn't stand up he was so wasted and couldn't put on his skis. A young couple came over and helped him balance long enough to clip in and boom! Off like a shot, gliding away lol.
I laughed so hard I nearly choked on my burger. The guy was always a riot to watch.
NorthernWildsLifestyle, Gold. Thanks for sharing
How Life should be, Amen.
D.U.I'd by Snow Patrol?? 😂😂
You can take a Norwegian out of his cross country skis, but never take the skis out of the Norwegian.
If you really want to see a documentary about the “ most elusive man in North America” watch Alone in the Wilderness about Dick Proenneke. He returned from Vietnam, and was kinda over everyone, and lived alone in a cabin in Alaska up into his 80s. He had one friend who brought supplies via bush plane every 3 months. The documentary doesn’t go into great detail about his philosophical discoveries, but follows his journal about how he was able to do what he did.
Alaska Here - Dick served in WW II - please get your facts down.
I love that guy! When he makes the spoons I get so excited lol
Had a neighbor kinda like that . He came back from WW2 , got married, raised a family , ran a farm . Did everything a man was supposed to do back then . And when the kids left home he sold the farm and moved up north of u-city about a hundred miles , would go into u-city once a year for supplies , no human saw him other than that
thx will do :)
This was so pathetic and melodramatic the way it's narrated and the guy seems like one of those old guys who are super condescending and pretentious. The guy that would strike up a philosophical conversation with a stranger in public just to stroke his ego and then walk away right before you get agitated.
Dag says, "I can't have a bad death. I've lived a full life, I didn't sit it out in front of a TV." And here I sit in front of a video monitor admiring Dag, wanting to be more like him. Now in my 60's I'm certainly headed in the same direction as this kindred spirit.
Hi. I know it's a year later. I just wanted to comment on YOUR comment and, concur with it. I'm in my 50s now; a highly degreed, highly indebted, middle-aged man. 👨🏾🎓☹💸THIS guy's life is increasingly more appealing to me, with each passing year; currently training towards my first ultramarathon and becoming more savvy about off-grid living.👴🏾⛰🏡🏃🏽♂️ I wish you well, stranger!☺👋🏾👨🏾⚕️

Hey, thanks guys. I haven't seen Daag since '73 and never forgot him. A true legend.
I give the man a thumbs up..live the life you want to. Period.

This man is what men use to be, self reliant and self sufficient. It is an indictment of our precious technology that we have lost our do it yourself pride and sense of self worth!!!
I'd like to see just how self reliant and self sufficient he really is because there was nothing on this video to prove that he is..I didn't see a garden or a farm so how does he get his food. Where and how does he get money??..all the most important questions where not asked.
@@richmahogany1480 swedish krona trees
@@richmahogany1480 He lives within his means with a Canada pension , I think your question should be did he contribute enough to our society to earn it. I think he has, I believe others have not ,even though they are able to do so. I also believe Dag is not a burden to our heath care system or any other parts of our institution.
@@rickszabo4312 don't assume anything about what I said my question was clear ..it didn't have anything to do with whether he contributed to society enough. The question was how self sufficient is he. I could care less how much he has contributed to society as far as I'm concerned he has contributed enough just by being a decent human being which he obviously is. What I'm wondering is how self sufficient he is..because if someone is bringing him groceries in a vehicle once or twice a month then obviously he's not very self sufficient.
@@rickszabo4312 just because someone is wondering around in the woods for 30 years doesn't mean they are self sufficient. I know because I did it myself. I've been wondering around in the woods for 30 years and I don't consider myself self sufficient at all. I'm just an introvert. People have lost the plot on what it means to be self sufficient in these comments. As far as I'm concerned this is just some old crazy introvert dude wondering around in the woods. If whoever is feeding him stopped feeding him he would probably come out of the woods to ask for help or just die from starvation. But to me he doesn't look self sufficient at all..not from what I saw in this video. I'm guessing the old dude has a kid or family member bringing him supplies every month.
I really enjoy watching these old dogs out there living life on their own terms. Much Respect !!
A man living his life on his own terms- screw what society 'tells' you how you should be living your life. If only the rest of us had the balls to do this...

Truly, the most elusive men are never known.
maybe..maybe not....is one elusive if no one is looking for them?
or how about if someone IS looking for them but they are not aware of it?
once humans get involved in anything...nothing is certain except they will filter through their assumptions...anything they are involved in
Fact.
Ok chill Socrates
There is probably more than a 100 like him here in BC living so far off as mountain men and women.
Tip my hat to you Dag! I am 75 and I have done some stuff too. Loved every minute. My body is resisting the most difficult things I once did but my list this year will beat most 29 year olds. True, age doesn't matter , it is what your body can still do. What your mind can still do! I hate pulling back but I never want to be carried out.
My uncle's friend was doing some photography with Dag, and I had the pleasure of meeting him on a couple occasions. He's a very wise and spiritual man based on talking to him.
He's Norwegian. Never heard of him before but if he is the father of off piste skiing that's pretty rad.
I went in my uncles sauna with him and a few other guys and he was just pounding back beers lol. Apparently he hardly drinks any water during his races too. The guys superhuman
Seriously, have you considered doing a documentary or writing a book on Dag? This video was too brief and unsatisfying, full of fancy shots and stylized editing, but the briefest of snippets on who Dag really is.
The joy to be free to live a simple life, to be able to walk away from real or self inflicted responsibility to embrace the life you really want, one day I hope I have the joy of finding that inner balance and peace.

I would love to hermit (even 6-12 months) as enjoy my own company however I would not be without my daughter for the world.
You can't without money. money = freedom now.
coltin engle. I once thought that but having suddenly become disabled and really unwell, I had to stop work. Utter panic now few years in and amazing how little I need. Looking back I wasted so much money just buying "stuff".
We have just had to clear my parents house as mum died and wow stuff she kept it obviously was important to her but not to us. I realise more now how little I need to survive.
Im at the end of my working career 56, though I do still work i don't as much, change my status to business owner let others work, its sucks I hate baby sitting id rather retire or go on disability and free my time up doing and going places, doing things i enjoy on my time not a schedule. look at the positive side of what you have and find joy, even though medical issue can get in the way . I now ask myself before buying something do i really need this, will i use this? i look around me an ask if i die today how much trouble will i be for others to clear this mess, like my animals i worry about them being taken care of if something happened to me. Life really is short the end is nearer every day :)
I live in Vernon, Silver Star and the wilderness are well known to me. I understand him, the wild beautiful energy can connect a person so profoundly to nature we become quite hermit like.
Free from the corrosion of conformity. Society domesticates people into a sort of tainted experience.
most elusive guy on earth, they spend weeks looking him in the woods. he was in the bar the whole time. XD
😂
🤣
😂😂😂
That's it? I felt I was watching a trailer, this leaves me with more questions than answers.
I grew up seeing him and talking with him he is an amazing man glad to see he is still doing well and exactly the same thing haha
My favourite UA-cam video. Dag is very inspiring to me, living his own life, a lot of people won’t get him (see all the comments below 👇🏻) but that’s ok, you don’t have to get him. But everyone who watches this video can relate to at least one thing he says. I’d love to have a beer and sit around a camp fire for a few hours with Dag and listen to some of his wisdom, A-men to you brother 😎🚌
This 👍🏻
Never die easy Dag keep on running brother. Amazing
Why did you have to search for him for weeks if that journalist woman knows right where he lives? Why not start by "searching" there? Also, he is the "most elusive" man in North America, and yet he has a "favorite bar"? This all seems like hollow melodrama.
full lol's aye
Nothing but interest traps to lure viewers in instead of relying on the raw subject instead. Not many who would be drawn into watching a documentary baited only with the idea of an old guy who lives in a bus and just runs all the time.
👍🏼😂👍🏼
Yeah, the made him out like he was some Yoda type figure.
'We saw a quick tramp in a bar' just didn't have the same ring to it I guess.
The irony of making a video to entertain when the purpose of this video is to live your life and avoid such distractions is not lost.
Sort of. But UA-cam definitely isn't TV, and isn't necessarily just "entertainment".
Dag is about 80 now. Wonder how he's doing. I watched this again now since it aired 4 years ago. I was definitely worth a second watch.
I wonder if he ever interacted with Caballo Blanco, a guy not all that different but living in the American Southwest and Mexico.
If you are interested in learning more about Dag's life, get the book "Outsider" by Brett Popplewell. I just finished it and it was fascinating story. Just watching this video for the first time I can see his right shoulder is bulging where he dislocated it and walked out of the hospital because the Dr wanted to charge him $5000, since he allowed his medical card to expire once he moved into the bus and started his hermit way of life.
Im from Vernon, EVERYONE in the ski community and running community knew of DAG especially is you're a bit older. You couldn't drive up to silver star without seeing him jogging up the road lol. Its still a neat piece and if you go up to the ski hill check out brians ski shop!
"I have a full life to look back on because I didn't spend it in front of a tv." ~The most elusive man.
That's the biggest piece of advice out of a statement ever said. Soak it up.
You're in front of UA-cam...soak it up.
@Gary Nelson You're the one that put tv down yet you watch the same crap on UA-cam and think you're so above most people. Go away child.

10:05 I thought he was in pretty good shape, until I learned that he's only 32.
Most elusive?
He lived in a bus on Dave's place for years and now in a shack a bit further up the hill.
If you want to find him check the saloon.
Well if you are standing in Harvard Square....South Boston is the hinterland!!! These people are out of touch and out of their league.. it's sad because Atlantic Magazine was a great publication.

A year ago I watched this documentary/video and my thoughts connected with Dag's. It changed the way I now approach my life. Thank you for making this. Thank you.

The footage quality was great. Loved the drone work. I would've liked to see the inside of the bus or get some backstory on Dag to understand what led him to such solitude. Enjoyed it.
Read the new book, "Outsider" which is kind of like a bio. It's a crazy and kind of tragic life.
It has been said by others but I will say it also:
Great subject, abysmal documenting.
8 minutes into a 14 minute documentary is when the subject is finally revealed?!
The majority of the documentary was not of the subject but rather the filmmakers' adventures talking to locals... which is pretty piss-poor if it took them a few weeks in Vernon to finally contact a local reporter who has written articles on the subject.
The whole documentary seems like the directors just said, "Lets see if we can lazily find someone, record our vacation and then go home as soon as we find them," and of course not bother to actually get much documented except for maybe 3 quotes of substance and nothing more.
This should have been much more substantial as Dag is getting quite old. Rather than focus on on the 'why he is up there' they should have focused at least on the 'how'. It may be selfish of others to ask him to share more of his life, but in a world where kids are glued to tablets, he is a source of inspiration.
Dr. Rhomboid Goatcabin they did say elusive 😂
The joy is in the journey, not the destination.
Don’t forget the drone shot!
Yeah this was a huge let down, at least I passively watched on my tablet while making breakfast, so not a huge waste of my life
As Dag Said, there is no point in trying to understand other people when you cant understand yourself. Dags elusiveness is a why and how in itself.
U are just a hater Dr. Your just upset that somebody might be more interesting, happier, and possibly smarter than you, that isn't in the corporate rat race with a expensive education imo. Not saying I didn't want one btw.

It seems that he loves running the woods very much. To the point that he skips recovery days.
I would imagine " The Most Elusive Man in North America " (whoever that might be) is even less known than this man.
Much less. Not at all. Nowhere Man...
That would be me because you do not know who I am, so I am the most elusive man in north america. I was once told that I would be the most famous hermit in the world after i am dead and people hear my story. A news paper reporter once said that I was the most difficult person in the world to find. (he wanted to do a story on me ) see you still have not heard of me have you?

For some, they need the company of others. For me, I can travel to the Sylvania Recreational Area, near Watersmeet, Michigan, in early May, after the ice goes off the lakes. Two portages later I'm on Whitefish Lake, alone for two weeks. I fish, I cook, I tend the campfire. I make a sail using two paddles and my rain pullover to sail across the lake. I read books. I play my harmonica. The solitude restores my soul and I'm very contented.

This is an interesting subject matter but at times this film feels like a parody of itself that veers into intentional pretentiousness - too much floury narration, dramatic pauses that drag out the basic plot developments, aerial shots simply for the sake of visual poetry that doesn't compliment the material...

I agree, but it is also possible Dag wasn't interested in doing more. He's not in it for the fame, or the money, or the power, you may have noticed. It is quite possible a solitary man was only willing to spend a couple hours at most with interviewers.

This was very good. But the music and narration was too cheesy to my liking. Just too "cinematic". I was so pleased to hear Dag speak for the first time, without any meddling in the form of the weird background music or some "special effects" on his picture. Also, can you please enlarge the things that you had written and placed at the center of the video? It was very tiny and hard to read. Mostly the technical aspects of this creation were annoying to me. Otherwise, overall it's a good, informative and interesting video.

How many people have made a conscious decision to spend their lives infront of a screen ? Or is it something pushed on us by the revolving door of cultural conditioning ?
@@jakecolless5152 It's neither. Survival has been taken out of the equation for those in Western countries. Too much comfort seems to break apart the mind and soul. That's why wokeism has infected young people. They have no purpose and therefore no drive. What you say is 100% true and I agree with you.
It was always my dream ( because I grew up in the country on a working farm) to have a small cabin up in the mountains somewhere and live off the grid living off the land , I never made it but my heart will always be in the forest. I GET what Dag is saying . He’s awesome.✌️⚒️🦅⚡️🍀🦍
Sorry to hear you never made it to that cabin in the woods. I just turned 52 and I’m in the process of building a cabin to try and live one year off grid with my dog. I don’t want regrets and now a days life goes by quickly.
What a wonderful human being. I'm a great great grandmother and older than Dag but I still try to be my own person and live simply so I understand is ideas about life.
If he lives so remotely, how is he getting to town, buying food, staying clean? You know all the things that might have made this interesting. You know he's not doing all this on foot in a B.C. winter. So come clean - what's the real story, and I don't mean 8 minutes of chatting with the locals and 2 minutes of drone footage and a minute of titles and narration in a 14 minute piece.
Asking the real questions here... I had the same thought. WHAT DOES HE DO IN THE WINTER?
Proof that Dag has a winter home in the city?
Well first id say he's living in the bus all winter, the forest has everything, food, water, firewood for heat and in the winter the temps will freeze food like meats and stuff can have a wood stove in bus a lot of people do, may have social security benefits check every month also to go to town have a beer and go back in the hills, he's damn good shape for his age but I think the running in woods with out a gun is stupid, I live in the hills of the black hills we have no bears but have mountain lions and wolves, and I've been stalked by the cats and 2 times surrounded by wolves its not fun, and he's up where the wolves get to be 260 plus pounds and grizzly bears, and that one mountain lion that guy shot up there was frikin humungous, binged.it/2GPpMp2
Gene Loren where are the wolves that grow to 260lbs? The largest pure breed wolf ever recorded in the lower 48 is half that size

i get him, i so wish i could figure out how to be in a place like that. luck, being a man, money, something got him there ?? i would love it, been living rough for ten years and around people and in society that could care less any more for fellow human beings. be better off like this.
I hope your situation gets better in the coming days and you can live a life which you can enjoy to its fullest.
The man Skied down an Friging avalanche !

...the start is like watching paint dry
Thank you.
Your comment should have been pinned to the top.
It would enable a lot of people to see the actual story,
before they quit from boredom.
I skipped the first 2 minutes like it was an instinct telling me it's crap and the next 6 mins took me 60 seconds. Man, when I was a kid I wanted to be a journalist, my mom was one. I never became one because I thought that commercial influence was getting too big and too difficult to avoid. But looking at it now I feel like these people are wasting oppurtunity after oppurtunity.
What's wrong with watching paint dry? Could be interesting. 😂
Thanks for sharing. This was great. Going for a run now. Slow but steady.
I totally understand you Dag.
You are awesome!
Would love to meet you & talk.
he must not be to elusive if you drove your Subaru right up to where he was
they didnt. That was just the editing they did, the road that takes you near his bus is a maintained skihill road, but you still have to get out on foot. I live in Vernon, and his bus has been lost in the bush for decades, the road it took to get to its spot is overgrown. You have to hike in and find it. ive looked for it, been around that area, he never advertised his whereabouts, just to his close friends.
@Carlos Danger there are many, many forest service roads that were made up to 80 years ago in that area, some were used once for surveying or logging inspection and then never used again. he drove it down a road that wasnt fully overgrown yet, and then let the road overgrow and conceal the bus. all you need to do is wait for him to eventually run down the main ski hill road for a jog one day and you will see him and you cant talk to him. they didnt find his bus, they found him going for a jog first. they even showed that in the video. i dont understand why its so hard to figure out. you cant find his bus easy, but you can find him jogging into town and going for a beer a lot easier
@I understand that but logging roads are one example of roads that did exist only to be overgrown with trees again in ten years if they are not maintained.
:)))))))))))
@@jaredf5000 I was looking at a Google map of Vernon and the sports bar but couldn’t really see where the old lumber road was or anything actually. I sure would like to know more about him as it is a interesting story. Is there a better article to read about it.
Yeah, first in his class because he's the only one from his class running.
Great editing, Great video, Great scenery, Great people, Great video ps. Tge footage of the mountain in the intro where is that located thanks keep up the great work
Good for you man
Living the dream
Dag is fascinating but man is the rest of the video was so hard to watch. It reeks of pretentiousness and smarmy self-satisfaction. The cinematography and editing are just so far from the story of the man it's about that it feels disjointed as fuck. Just let the man talk and make a shorter video if you don't have enough footage.
A 2 minute intro in a 14 minute video. That's about 15% of the runtime. Why you gotta be this way Atlantic?
Wadsworth Constant, man, can't escape it.
It’s a FILM. That’s me being sarcastic.
I understand God Bless my brother.
It is not important what people think of you. What is important is what you think of yourself.
