That was very interesting Danica. I got T1D for my 16th birthday instead of a car. I'm now 68. Been married to the same wonderful woman for 48 years. Had T1D for the past 52 years. Been on the pump for the past 38 years and Dexcom for the past five. Before the Dexcom days fingers were like pin cushions from the use of glucometer to check glucose level several times each day. Life's much better with Dexcom.

Married 27 years now, 2 daughters and type 1. He was a blind date and cute as hell, I didn’t say anything about my diabetes till about 3 weeks of dating, I figured no one would want me and that life but guess what he didn’t care one bit and I warned him of aging with me, still he said we do this together and if you can’t have real coke than neither can I. He has always believed we eat the same. Literally he stopped real pop and just switched over, I married him 6 months later. My life is good and I try hard to stay healthy because I don’t want to be a burden because I chose not to care about myself. This a great video because I know many worry about the same things

I was diagnosed with T1 at 39, well over a decade into my marriage. I can't imagine being with a partner who isn't willing to be part of this whole experience. She may not have this disease but she still has to deal with many of the same annoying side effects I do (from beeping CGM alerts on both of our phones to the occasional "sorry, I can't drive for another 15 minutes until my blood sugar is back up"). Maybe it's because I was diagnosed later in life that I don't see anything wrong with being up front and educational about this when meeting new people you expect to be interacting with often (especially when it comes to dispelling the myth that this disease is "mostly kids" when in reality it's "mostly adults, and half of them are still misdiagnosed as T2").

Hi Chris,Hope you're doing well.I was wondering if your endocrinologist told you that you are a type 1 or of type 1.5? I was diagnosed at the age of 33.I learned 10 years later from my endo that I was of type 1.5 (also called LADA). Now, is it important to know I could not tell really.I know one thing is that I need less insulin. And also very sensitive to exercise vs blood sugar.Best regards, Jean-François

    • @ex-nerd
      @ex-nerd 3 роки тому +1

@@jean-francoisparent574 My PCP said T1/T1.5 (though mistakenly described it as "rare" when in reality half of us are diagnosed over the age of 30), my endo said T1. The truth is, the T1.5 moniker was first proposed in 1985 (and LADA in 1993), both terms were officially relegated to "slang" status in 1995 when *all* autoimmune diabetes was officially classified as T1. It's more confusing since some doctors (and even the ADA/JDRF T1 Diabetes Sourcebook, basically the official textbook on diagnosis) use "T1.5" to refer to "double diabetes" in any age. If you're curious, I've written about both the history of the name, and a good analogy of all of the types of diabetes at ex-nerd dot com, and include links to all of the original source material there.

So my question fits with the bloopers. My son is the type 1. He is 30 and I think he is thinking it would be really hard to live with him as a diabetic. Therefore, I am afraid my son believes no one will ever willingly choose to be a part of this struggle. There are the days you feel awful because you were up all night with blood sugar issues. The days you are rollercoastering. The alarms going off in the night and waking your spouse when you get one. The expense. And of course, worrying about the type 1 in your life dying due to complications. Does any of this cross Cody's mind or concerns. Type 1 is a hard disease to manage. It takes it own suitcase when traveling and it can change your plans at any minute it wants to.

On the note of glucagon: it’s also good to RE-teach them on a fairly regular basis. I learned this after I got woken up with a glucagon needle in my butt cheek when I didn’t need it. I snapped awake real quick (before the plunger was pushed in) so no harm no foul, but it was not pleasant lol

Been diabetic since 12, am 22 now. Never had an issue with dating and anyone really caring about it. Honestly, I think it makes you more interesting. Cool pump, funny patch stuff we wear to check our sugars. It really doesn't effect the person you date anyhow! In the grand scheme, its super minimal and doesn't effect them in really any way haha.

    Questions for Cody:
Did you know anything about T1D before you met Danica
Was it hard to learn about it/how quickly did you learn (eg, things like carb counting, Dexcom stuff)
Do you worry about Danica because she has diabetes

  • @anns6349

    Hi, Danica,
In a past video (it may be from way back; I’ve been watching for years) you mentioned issues with your skin whenever you tried anything to keep Dex sites on better or longer. I’ve dealt with similar issues. In the past few months I’ve finally found something that works under the site and skin grips I use without leaving a rash or broken skin! It holds entire life of sensor even with sweaty workouts and swimming. They are actually two ostomy supply products. They should market these to diabetics too! The first is 3M Cavilon No Sting Barrier Film (I prefer the swabs as it leaves anything it touches tacky and can be more carefully applied this way). Simply apply to area where sensor and cover patch will be applied, wait a minute then apply as normal.
This protects your skin from adhesives, fluids that get under patch, friction and gives improved adherence. This can make removal a little trickier. So I use the remover spray linked below. Just spray patches wait a few seconds and peels right off without tugging.
Both items are linked below. :)

@@jacquelinescourageousworld2438 I got really lucky in that I never manifested the symptoms of type 1 until age 28. I was deployed in Afghanistan and had caught shrapnel in a IED explosion and I wasn’t healing. They ran all sorts of tests on me to figure out what was wrong. I almost lost my arm and leg as a result. They ran an a1c for shits and giggles and it came back 18.75. I was immediately medically discharged because you can’t be insulin dependent and in a combat situation. I had just passed my lieutenant exams and been promoted.

Sometimes, even now as an adult, I’ll still wake up and check on her through the night, and she’ll be low. It’s like I’ve always had a sixth sense, that’s made a little easier now with her dexcom. If she’s low and we’re in a store or somewhere, I’ll run and grab her a Dr. Pepper, and a pack of Reese’s cups. Not sure if you guys spoke about starting a family and having kids yet cause I don’t know how long you have been together.
