uncle chaos A living Telemaster. Eccentric. Many vids of him on UA-cam. Give a listen. He is a good talker too. Some great chats. Like many Telemasters, he is into the pre-rock roots music: Jazz, country, blues.
Just got the new 68 Custom Princeton Reverb in today from Sweetwater. Sounds different as would be expected at home. Yes I did try one out at True Tone Music in Santa Monica, CA recently with a Amer Jazzmaster Special and was immediately won over by the tone. In my home it sounds a lot deeper but then again, that's my home and not the music store. If I had to immediately choose a small amp, I go with my HR Blues Junior, though it is a 15 watt vs. this 12 watt. All in all though for a small amp, a lot of muscle, great knob response to any setting you ask for. The Celestion 30 is an awesome speaker. Really like the "blue" color light vs. traditional red from an aesthetic aspect. Being a Fender amp person (one acception being a Vox ac15cc1 with Celestion GH12 Heritage 30 speaker switch) and new preamp tube) the Deluxe Reverb is top dog then my Vibrolux. Don't play out much these days, so I go for the smaller watts and mic if needed. My advice, try the 68 Custom first before you order and use the guitars you'd normally use. Environment is the challenge
for Jim (and anyone else): Adding two 1M resistors in parallel to the existing 1M resistor in the trem circuit dramatically improves the Princeton's wobble. See any of Uncle Doug's Princeton restoration videos on youtube. Easy, cheap and magnificent. Easily removed if you don't like it too. Cheers!
What REALLY needs to go in this amp is a Jensen 100 watt Alnico Blackbird, blow that one AWAY! NO break-up, just a warm fat tone! I use them in my 30 watt clean amps, n they are mortally AWSM...
What's the story with that orange Telecaster? That is so cool. Does anyone know anything about what year or model it is, and what the finish is called?
I had 2 before I saw Jim's video 13 years ago. Now I have 10. They are way too expensive now. But I have a power down transformer, and buy from the US now. From Australia. Leo made the amp to be perfect with all knobs at 12 o'clock
@@mismo358 No, I had extra tubes from my 65 reissue, and the issue didn't go away. It was defiantly the speaker baffle. Even when I returned it, I tried out another 68 in the store, same issue.
I had a Princeton Blackface Re-Issue and the tremelo was weak. I ended up selling it and eventually got the 68 Custom Deluxe Reverb (good tremelo). Sometimes you're lucky, and other times you're not. You can never count your chickens before they hatch.
You wrote this six years ago I realize, but in case somebody reads this: if the tremolo on a 65 PRRI is too weak, the amp is probably biased too hot. When biasing you should aim for 20-21 mV with that amp, tremolo should be fine then. If the bias is too low, the tremolo is too pronounced.
You'd think for almost a grand, Fender would have better constructed cabinets & handwired circuitry. I really wish they'd get rid of stuff that's below usable quality & invest in things that are classics with better quality and attention to detail.
These have a MSRP of $1200 which means dealers are paying $600 for them. So Fender needs to be able to make these for about $300 to make any money. There is no way they could do hand wired Princetons for $300 manufacturing cost.
Vince Gill, Jeff Beck, Keith Richards, Robben Ford, Jim, I can't think of any famous Tele player that doesn't use the original 3 saddle bridge! Can you BB?
You are right! But Poison's guitarist legacy is not legendary as these aforementioned Tele wizards. It's personal preference anyway. Probably easier to keep in tune.
I've never used vibrato in my 45 years of playing.I've also never heard anyone else use it either except for a couple of songs like" seasons in the sun". Ok, because it's reissue I get it, but I'd like to see this amp with a delay or some chorus instead. I have a Princeton here now and really like it. My 2 cents...
at 6 it gets marshally, thats way too soon....I need more clean headroom...but I guess you`ll never get there with bedroom levels.........its sad that he doesnt really play something real
I really love joes playing. However, this video is rather self indulgent and it's too informal. I detected the earlier breakup of the new one is partly defeating the object for most of us.
***** I've never noticed because I've never owned one. I've played through Fender amps before though and I found them to be too loud and chimey. I've always found reverb on an amp to be extremely annoying. I never use it, at all..
+Daniel Birtchfeld It's not meant to be based on a '65 Princeton Reverb, that amp is a Blackface. This is based on one of the early Silverface Princetons, although how much it sounds like an old Silverface I can't tell you as I've never played one, and this particular one makes some modifications to it. Some people reckon this sounds quite simialr to the Brownface Princeton as well, but again, I haven't played one of those either.
the amp is ok but use the speaker output with a good speaker cabinett and then talk about the Princeton this demonstration is nuts cause they don´t demonstrate what the amp can
I respect anyone who plays different to anyone else
Jim Campilongo is an absolute legend, one of the greatest Tele players of all time. So cool to see him do a Fender video
Campilongo videos are about the only ones that show how sparkly the '68 can be, even if he basses them through the floor. Best advert on UA-cam.
People complaining about Jim's playing...truly a face-to-palm situation. The guy is a straight G.
