It is absolutely brilliant and imaginative filmmaking, especially considering that Agnes Varda had never gone to a film school and had only seen about six movies before making her own. She was incredibly talented.
This film contains some of the best camera work in the history of cinema. Every single shot is art. It's a shame so few people have heard of this film; it is up there with Breathless and 400 Blows for its importance in the French New Wave.
Cleo from 5 to 7 / Cléo de 5 à 7 (1962) - Trailer 1519pm 5.12.23 ummmmm let us divest ourselves of every entity on the planet and just think: i bet this is some cruddy UCLAN infested ruse to make something which would be deemed hip and kitsch the go to film in your collection. a must see!!! probably spliced footage of disused rushes and...lo!!! that footage of the park does seem redolent of Preston and it's equally kitschy Japanese sunken gardens. i can envisage some sap gettin' all het up cos this film could have been some duplicitous media studies project to make the contemporary seem old and now staid as 60's french cinema has become... that's what i initially thought - and i'd never seen the bloomin movie. until now!!! and I'm thinking same old same old. what say you? i now have hankering for Gauloises cigarettes, laying about on a bed and thinking i'm the disposed-of artisto of the ancien régime.... she's probably scottish.
I love this trailer. It doesn't give away the plot and creates a beautiful atmosphere which would make me want to see the film if I hadn't already seen it.
while I'm not french I live in a country that uses 24 hour clock, we use 24 hour clock mostly for writing/texting/formal context, but in speech nobody really says 17 for evening 5, we just say 5 and it's understood from context, so if I would say to a friend "where were you at from 5 to 7" usually it's not needed to specify further but if there is going to be a confusion I would say "where were you at this evening from 5 to 7"
On a daily basis, the French use both systems, context makes it possible to know whether we are talking about morning or afternoon. BUT, in everyday romantic life, a 5 à 7 is a date for not really official or unofficial lovers that usually happens after work and before going home. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinq_%C3%A0_sept
A first I got impression the was a pretentious movie. But no this is extremely watchable and good storytelling. It looks nice and completely works as a movie as well.

I love the camera out of the taxi front window, with the mirror and radio in shot whilst the news is being read out.

The ending tells you all you need to know about the French New Wave.

this is a perfect movie. absolutely flawless.

Parfait...Nous sommes sans toi, Agnes Varda...
Can someone explain the time in the title? France now uses the 24 hour clock, did they used to use a 12 hour clock, and if so when did they change?
