This genuinely made me tear up. Agnes has been a massive inspiration for me since I saw The Gleaners and I in film school. I adore all the works by Godard, Truffaut, Resnais but to me it feels like Varda makes her movies with far more heart and compassion for the human will. RIP Agnes

@@lynn-iv4ukI have only gotten into film in the past year and from Agnès Varda I have seen cleo from 5 to 7, vagabond and le bonheur. I also saw la pointe-Courte yesterday which seems to be underrated in her filmography, its really good.

All great picks with one glaring exception: the first execrable feature of Lena Dunham. But then, that's the one which Madame Varda hadn't seen beforehand, so it's an innocent mistake.

From the moment I read about vagabond I could barely make it through the week but had an appointment with the most valuable behind the scenes figure in modern poetry To go over a book of poems I had hoped I had finished… He wondered why I was so drawn to Vagabond- Before I give it a thought to Sandrine Bonaire. It is charming how, even having argued with Godard, as he was a very complicated person, she still remembers him fondly and chooses Bande Aparte as one of his favorite films.

Finally saw Cleo 5 to 7 recently. It was great :).
Yes, one of my faves and as good a film as Godard's "Breathless," made about the same time.

im so glad she shared parts of her thru film and she is still alive thru them. bc this makes me miss her :(
brilliant segment, she knows how she wants to do this, is direct, but warm, precise, picks nice range of movies, throws an interesting curveball (Lena Dunham) and signs off with the perfectly verbalized thought we've all had - put us in this room and give us a screen. She's 89 years-old. Damn.

I discovered Agnes Varda far too late. Just when I was getting to know her, she was gone. I miss her spirit and her sweetness.

She is a great director and by no means inferior to other Nouvelle Vague auteurs. It makes me feel bad that I haven't watched many of her films as she is also a really inspiring filmmaker.

Her "Le bonheur" is still a very thought-provoking film, as it asks, can a man love two women at the same time? Also, watch Truffaut's "Jules and Jim," which asks the opposite question: can a woman love multiple men at the same time? Europeans are still much more advanced when it comes to dealing with these issues in a mature and artistic fashion.
Agnes Varda, apart from being a phenomenal filmmaker, is adorable.

Agnes is so charming, wise and adorable. I can listen to her talk about films (exploring their themes, concepts and visual ideas) forever. She exudes this deep passion and love for cinema and life in general which is incredibly refreshing to see.
I would pick her any day over Godard. Her Vagabond, Gleaners and I & more recently Beaches of Agnes are some of my favorites. It's so amazing she picked "Sweetie" which also happens to be one of my all time favorites...yay!
Agnes, if you are reading the comments section (why do i get this feeling that you have much better and more interesting things to do than this but if by some random chance that you are) and if you haven't yet seen them, please watch, Jellyfish (Meduzot) from Israel and Wadjda from Saudi Arabia - two very good films - which i think you will enjoy, judging by your taste and choice in movies.
Criterion should do Claudia Weill’s Girlfriends from 1978 with Melanie Mayron, Christopher Guest and Anita Skinner. Varda would like it.

By all accounts he's living out his years as a bitter old man with no time for anything he considers beneath him. Of all the nouvelle vague directors, he's the one who went off the deep end and took his ego trip to its logical conclusion.

@Malickite I actually enjoyed some of his late-60s political films. La Chinoise, Made in USA, One Plus One... Not exactly a light watch but there was enough farce and good aesthetic choices that made them interesting to me. But he does seem like a bit of an arrogant prick.

"give me a dvd reader and I'll do" - it is noticeable that it isn't possible to get a dvd player in most electrical shops now. Reminds me of a video library nearby me: the VHS player broke...and now what? Is it a citizen's duty to subscribe to Netflix? Somebody should do a movie about obsolete equipment and dreams that don't playback. I don't think I've ever seen one like that. That.
I can dig it. I have a fairly eclectic, impressive video film collection of over 200 videos. Everything from The Marx Bros to Antonioni, but my video player doesn't operate anymore. Thus, I am unable to watch them. Bummer. I need to locate a damn vcr. I have dvds/player, but they're different films, more contemporary. I'm jonesing to watch Wild Strawberries, La Notte, Touch of Evil, etc. And Agnes Varda's, La Pointe Courte!
I hope you guys gave her all the things she needed to watch the films.
