For those not in the know of this fight, the teams went back to the pits with the robots still attached to one another. They separated the tooth from Quantum and the top panel of Blacksmith and tried to hydraulic press them apart and STILL couldn’t. They had to be cut apart in the end. This was down to materials. AR500 when it is pierced like this becomes jagged and grips hold of whatever is piercing it. In a later fight against Duck (who was running an Aluminium chassis) the crusher slides in and out like a knife through butter. Blacksmith chose to use AR because they believed it would be hard enough to withstand the crushing force. They were unfortunately wrong and paid the price.
I wrote a similar comment and just saw yours 😊 glad other people are aware of how AR500 reacts when pierced and crushed as many don't really understand what happened during that fight
AR500 steel is absolutely no joke, and watching Quantum slice through it like a hot knife through butter is extremely impressive. Steel targets at the shooting range is made from AR500 steel, and even body armor plates are made with it. Watching it fail so easily shows just how much power Quantum has in that crushing jaw.
i like the explanation, but i disagree with the outcome, if you're allowed 30 to hold and dont let go, you broke the rules and have lost. make a system to let go, or be disqualified.
@@jackl597 look at it this way. Quantum tried everything in its power to let go, but blacksmith's armor refused to cooperate. Essentially, at that point it was blacksmith holding on and not letting go.
When I looked over the rules PDF on the Battlebots site, the rule is that they have let go _if possible_. As much as I like Blacksmith, Quantum was obviously trying to release, so it's all within the rules.
yeah, the armor choice worked against them. It made them stick even more, which is not what you want to happen against other bots with a spiked weapon like Shatter.
The AR500 armour they put on top of Blacksmith for this match just cracked and snagged after piercing with such force.... it is how that specific armour reacts to getting pierced and crushed
even if quantum was trying to let go, neither of the bots could do anything to separate each other, so none of them can be blamed. Maybe the Blacksmith team didn't know how that armor would have reacted to quantum's tooth? but it's not important anymore, they are separated now
I want to love blacksmith's weapon, and it's lame they barely got to use it. But I feel like if they couldn't prevent quantum from grappling so quickly, that's not quantum's problem. Grappling robots are a little problematic, and make things boring. But fire is rarely more than a gimmick imo, it doesn't actually do much damage on its own. They can always ditch it and invest in a faster bot and hammer, which might have helped them in this match.

Nothing can beat big Kinetic energy weapons these days. It is just a question of whether it is a horizontal or vertical spinner, whether it is a disk or a drum, and dividing your mass budget between the weapon and the armor. I'd like them to give non Kinetic Energy weapon bots - crushers, control bots, hammers etc. - a weight advantage to level the playing field.
@@robertbackhaus8911 Hydra made the semi finals and lost under... controversial circumstances. Blip made the quarter finals and lost due to chassis/drive/magnet/geometry issues, not because of their weapon choice. Either could have gone all the way. Both are flippers.

BattleBot rules should be ammended to require at least 10 degrees draft on each face of piercing tools. The tool on Quantum has parallel sides and will only extract easily from ductile materials or those where a fracture creates clearance. High tensile steels are going to grab the sides of teh tooth every time.
Sometimes, having a thick armor against a crusher like Quantum may be a bad idea either good just to protect the valuable parts. But not in that situation from Blacksmith.
Problem with this fight was that Blackmith team installed somekind of protective mesh under their chasis to prevent Quantum to bite their batteries or important electronics. Thing is that Quantum's tooth got stuck into this mesh and only way to release of both robots was to turn off both robots, unbolt quantum's tooth and take it from blacksmith chasis and bolt it back. This happened three times in the fight and rules say if they need to stop in this situation fight three times, Fight will end and it goes to Judge decision and decision can't go any other way than win by Quantum.
At the point where Blacksmith is hanging off of the tooth what more could they do? Fyi, they did an unstick after that because they couldn’t separate mid fight. They edited that one out though.
@@bongoman9578 simple; someone else explained it -> the tooth has parallel sides, which is fine for soft and ductile materials, but not any hardened armor. it will get stuck in any hardened armor, because the hard armor will spring back and clamp itself to the tooth. if they were to not have parallel sides but 10 degrees of draft it would not be able to get stuck as easily. also they did very little effort to actually unstick from their opponent imo. didnt wedge or lever on the sidewalls at all, didnt use the pulverizer or anything. they lifted blacksmith up and were like; well, thats all our effort. imo its a faulty and maybe intentionally malicious design. it would be the same to add a barb to the spike -> if your armor isnt soft enough where your own weight rips it its your fault kinda thing.
Well I now have my favourite bot Quantum for the same reason my previous favourite razor The crunching crushing style Mightn’t be the vertical hitting and flying in the air or the flippers But just watching it slowly squeeze the life out of its opponents

Not that I know of. Hammer weapons usually do little to no damage because they're too weak to punture bot armour and the weight of the bot is too light to support the force of the hammer
The tooth should have been way more round and conical, having it be a blade shape like that is almost guaranteed to make a slit that snags the blade going back out.
No, the direction of travel is exactly equal and opposite to the direction it went in at. We see in Quantum’s fight against Duck that it slides in and out with ease. All down to the material used for armour is all

Shouldn't be allowed to grab without a mechanism to specifically dislodge their opponent. A stuck grab like that, they should of called that fight a No Contest as it was out of both team's hands at that point.
It's the type of material used by blacksmith that made it so they got stuck together though. Quantum was clearly trying to let go of him. Indirect blame can be put on both of them so no it's definitely not something that deserves getting disqualified for.
Lucky for us, that’s not how Robot Combat works. They didn’t break the rules, sometimes the chaotic element of the sport leads to incidents like this where they were trying everything they could to release but just couldn’t. That’s not anybody’s fault, it just be like that sometimes
