The main problem is that the "lightest shades" are too dark for paler people. And the "darkest shades" are too light for darker people. Also the fact that the undertones are wack asf💀

Yep! It's so annoying. And they are all SO yellow.
they’ve also made it a very yellow/orange undertone shade range and not everyone is that undertone wise, some are more neutral, some are a little yellow but not this much some are more pink. So not only in terms of being “pale” and “deep” in skintone the shade range being crap, it’s crap for anyone who isn’t yellow undertoned.

This is 2018 and we don’t have time to wait for brands to create more shades after fucking up the initial launch and not practicing diversity. Deeper skin tones shouldn’t have to be an afterthought.

Literally watching that oxidize before my eyes was intriguing. I, personally, as a milky individual, will not be purchasing until they reevaluate their life and come out with shades for everyone.

everybody was asking for the launch, and taste felt rushed so they wanted to get the launch out as soon as possible. that’s why they released it before every shade was finished. i definitely agree though that it would’ve been a smarter move to wait to release the foundations when all the shades were ready.

FabulousPearl the shade range is a joke! But don't even seems like we light skinned people have shades either. Tarte has done so much bad lately I don't even want to buy from them. They knew this foundation would get a lot of hype and they released so few shades. And like only 2 kind of dark shades. I seriously thought it was a joke when I first saw that shade range. But they actually seems like they only have Donald Trumps shade.
They certainly won’t be getting my money. It’s sad that a company this big and this popular would do that. I definitely do not support tarte and hopefully they smarten up. I’m white as a ghost and I’m rattled.

JewelsFromVenus yeah but we’re not talking about cost. There’s 12 light shades and 3 dark. Tarte is a million dollar company, so I’m sure cost wasn’t an issue. Even if it were, they should’ve held off until they could afford a wider shade range. Rihanna launched 40 shade on her first go. People of color shouldn’t have to wait for the second go around because we were left out of the first. The whole brand is canceled in my opinion.
When I worked for Sephora I always hated this too. I'm so fair, like glow in the dark pale, every foundation is too dark except for maybelline fit me. Companies think so much about the middle ranges that anyone with a darker skin tone was always left out and my vampiric pale girls and I are left out. What's even more infuriating is when company's have something the right shade but the undertone is off. Not all my dark beauties have a red undertone and not all us pale beauties are pink. I think makeup companies need to open their eyes and look at why they're not inclusive to everyone

I hope the rumors are true that they are offering more shades but the damage was done on their part. If I remember correctly they did this for the rainforest of the sea foundation as well.

I usually add pure white foundation pigment to my foundation because a lot of brands do not make one light enough. I do not expect a drugstore or new brand to be inclusive with 30 shades, but an established and mid range brand like Tarte should have known better and has the budget for a heck of a lot more shades.

It’s absolutely unacceptable. Maybe darker skin tones are hard to formulate, I don’t know, but I’d rather a brand take their time on a shade range rather than coming out with something for a quick buck because they slapped the name of a previous popular product on it. Tarte used to be my favorite brand before this shit. They know better than this.
Bethie Page it's the fact that darker shades still look like an after thought. They came across as careless and could have pushed the release date back until their collection was truly ready. It was such a poor decision on their part... there isn't an excuse when they know their following, influencer reviews and comment section.

Tarte not only chose to not be inclusive of all POC but also decided to not take accountability or acknowledge their wrongdoing by blocking and deleting negative constructive comments. And the extra 5 shades added to each line isn't gonna cut it either. A brand should either release all the shades at once or not release it any shades at all. I've honestly lost all respect for Tarte.

These brands take months if not over a year to develop these products using the proper steps. They have no excuse because Tarte is a big brand, with a large team, and the resources to do better then this. So cut the bullshit.
The colors are a goddamned nightmare. Tarte needs to get their shit together. The light ones look too yellow/orange for any normal human and the lack of darker shades is just uncalled for. I was so thrilled about this foundation but damn.

Be careful everyone; the hydrating one has alcohol as an ingredient, the matte one doesn't. Just something to think about if you break out from alcohol like I do, but the matte one looks stunning!
Lisa Lachhman ugh really? It's a hydrating foundation targeted to people with dry skin, but add alcohol which dries out the skin. Where is the sense in that?. I hate alcohol in any skin products.

I was actually really surprised because I wanted to purchase both. I thought Tarte would be a little more forgiving with the ingredients in their products especially in a 'hydrating' foundation, but it's okay I'm sure the matte one will be great :)
I didn't know that! That is disappointing. I have dry skin so I don't think the matte would work for me. But obviously I don't want to use something that has alcohol in it either so the hydrating one doesn't sound like it's for me either. 😢

To everyone arguing that it isn't about race: if it weren't, then there would be just as many dark shades as there were light, no matter how limited the range is. If all customers were equal in their eyes, it would be 5-5, or 10-10, NOT 12-3. End of story.
Tori Smith there is a demand. Look at fenty beauty, the FIRST shades to go out of stock were the deepest shades. So many people have been left behind because brands like tarte do not make products for them. What you're peddling is a myth.
Tori Smith Marketing and production are different things. If there is less demand for darker foundation, simply produce less tubes instead of excluding an entire race.
Tarte now hasn't only alienated customers who can't find a shade match, they have also alienated customers who care about these issues.
All they had to do was release an equal shade range. 5 light, 5 medium, 5 dark. Or released just one foundation with a decent shade range, instead this mess of light beige.

I’m sorry, but this is ridiculous. This isn’t a mistake, this is a business who makes MILLIONS a year who can afford to make more shades in a first release in foundations. They are now in the era of consumers from all spectrums of skin tones wanting makeup brands to have a good shade range in foundations. To represent others. People of darker skin tones should not fall under “second release” or be a second thought. I understand in a first release you aren’t going to have every tone. Get it totally. But COME ON you can at least have an equal amount in each “range”, until you add more. Not TWO darker skin tone foundations and like 13 medium white skin tone.
They themselves have said they are adding more tones to this line. So if that’s the case, they could have waited to release this until it was a bigger line. You wanna know the reality? They wouldn’t have released more darker shades, but are now because of the backlash.
And FURTHERMORE, their childish response of ignoring it mostly and DELETING COMMENTS from their customers about this SHOWS you how shady this company is. I could probably find my shade in this line easy, but I will NOT buy anything from this company, until they start to give representation to men and women with darker skin tones. And not give them second thought representation, like most makeup brands do. But FIRST RELEASE AND THOUGHT. Bye tarte.

I am a Latina. I don’t have a dark skin tone but I am not light either. I’m pretty neutral and to me, it seems as if they missed the mark on my end as well. I don’t want to have to buy two bottles ($80) to find my “perfect shade” when it should have already been done in the first place. Yes it is hard to get the perfect shade for everyone, but there should be enough shades to where it’s pretty damn close. Come on tarte. We were rooting for you, we were all rooting for you

ssnellz i have it, it dries down quickly to id say half a shade darker but its no different than any other liquid foundation drying down. oxidizing is when the foundation has a reaction with the oxygen in the air to make it change colors

Just for comparison - I am so light I cannot use Becca, YSL all hours, EL Double wear, and dior forever they do not have a shade to match. TBH I probably won't buy this because there are no shades for me either.
Same here, super pale, people with extremely light and extremely dark skin are ALWAYS left out, drugstore doesn't have any dark foundation shades here (in Germany) and also no light shades and if there are any they are way too pink for me...it's sooo frustrating, I hate having to spend so much money on Nars foundation because its the only one that kind of works on my skin

Alright, here's the thing. Fifteen shades is reasonable for a brand to come out with at the initial launch. Hell, I think it's reasonable for a brand to have fifteen shades. That's not the issue. The issue is, the VAST majority of the shades are for pale princesses up to "mildly tan". There's practically nothing for POC.
If the shade range had been more diverse, there would be no controversy. Maybe a bit of disappointment for having not quite as many shades, but there wouldn't be controversy. Tarte, by releasing this, even though they plan to "add more shades later", is saying that POC aren't significant enough to be included properly upon the first release. Fifteen shades is fine. 2 "deep" shades isn't.

Caitlin Albertyn 15 may not be enough but AT LEAST if they had evenly spread out the shades, (5 light, 5 medium, 5 dark) then it wouldn’t be as unfair. The majority of the 15 they put out are ALL light, the mediums are pretty light too. They would still be missing a lot of shades and undertones but yeah, it wouldn’t be as obviously biased towards light complexions.
My thing is, I genuinely wonder why they would want that type of controversy? They would get talked about anyway - everyone loves their concealer and was excited about this launch... why want such negative attention? Lots of people have lost respect for them and have said they won’t longer purchase from them even if they come out with more shades - cuz who wants to be an afterthought?

Yes!! Makeup brands need to come out with a wider shade range for deeper complexions. I love how Rihanna made sure of it with Fenty Beauty. Even though I have an oily complexion, I still prefer the luminous glow side because I’m not a fan of a super matte look, for some reason when I go for super matte looks, it’s uncomfortable. Realistically I feel like a makeup brand can't cover every single shade BUT Tarte didn't even almost try. Tarte is better than this. They have the means to make a much better selection. They need to be more inclusive and in PROUD of Manny for calling them out.

Black people were clearly an after thought. It would've been better if they launched in the summer with all the shades or at least have 15 shades in a gradient. Period point blank. 13 shades for fair skin and 3 for deep skin is a slap in our face.

For everyone asking what the big deal is imagine them releasing 12 variations of Deep/dark tones then only coming out with three fair/light shades. AshleyJanelle89 people don’t understand. Brands don’t do lighter and darker shades, because most people have medium skin tones. I’m incredibly white, there’s never any shades for me, it’s because these brands are here to make money. To produce a huge shade range, would cost a lot more money, and they wouldn’t sell as much. That’s why, I thought it was obvious? It’s not just black women, if you’re white af like me, finding a foundation that matches, is mission impossible.
I honestly thought brands learnt from fenty beauty about the shade range but I guess not, it's truly sad and of course Manny addressed this! So much love for Manny and his honesty ♥

Well, they did launch 40 shades in their first drop. But, agree there are plenty of brands that have an inclusive range like MAC, Maybelline, Cover FX, Huda Beauty, Bobbi Brown, Loreal, Clinique, NARS, Sephora, Lancome, Estee Lauder etc.

I’ve watched a few reviews on this of people of all colors and tbh all the shades look so orange to me! Kinda disappointing cuz everyone was so hype cuz tarts shape tape concealer was such a hit!
I think Tarte felt the pressure with a lot of brands coming out with bomb foundation, and they just did a rushed job. Kinda sucks because a lot of people probably won’t wait for the new shades and just move on. There are drugstore foundations that are amazing and have those shades already!!
It's still pathetic, since the Shape Tape came out and many were thrilled and asked for a foundation. That was TWO YEARS AGO, saying they felt pressured is a stupid excuse because they had years in advance to perfect the foundation shade range. They have even had months in advance to realize that their shade range is lacking for more diverse people since Fenty launched last year. Many brands are being called out and I'm pretty sure a multi-million dollar company who is on various social platforms would be aware of the brands being called out for the lack of shades. They should have done better than, "we will be releasing 10 more shades." Ten shades is NOT enough, I am sick and tired of brands thinking it is okay to get away with these things.
