We experienced a technical difficulty around the 1:15:00 mark but managed to salvage the session with a backup audio recording, sorry for the inconvenience
Rest in piece Jake I’m new to the reef world . I found the reef builder podcast and listened to everyone of them under my welding helmet at work. I love this podcast and the youtubes. Please Mark keep the podcast going you two are very inspirational
Mark, I’m thinking of you in your loss as well as Jake’s family with his first child on the way. I know we will all miss our “therapy” sessions and need one now more than ever. If you’re ever able to bring back RT when the pain has eased, Mark, I loved hearing you as well as Jake. Maybe one day. I had been binging RT every time I’m in my car or working on my tank for months and had just caught up to the newest episodes before Jake’s passing so it was a shock to hear that one of the 2 people I’d been sharing all of my drive time with was gone. Mark, Windsor, and all of those close to Jake, you’re in my heart.
Jake’s words at the end of this podcast were so kind and wholesome. It sounds like the trip to Bali didn’t go as planned but you will always be remembered and your memories will be cherished.
I’m only 3 years into the saltwater side of this hobby. Your tremendous amount of knowledge and guidance has been one of the reasons I have stuck with it and will continue in this hobby. The Reef Therapy sessions with Mark are priceless for many of us and have become our therapy sessions as well. You will truly be missed and as a legend in this hobby, will truly never die. My condolences to your family, Mark, and the entire Reef Builders organization. You leave behind a void that can never be filled. Rest In Peace our reefing friend.
Thank you!!! Jake, for all you have thought me with all your experience with the reef hobby and the many of hrs of therapy that you and Mark have given us all. I will miss the therapy that you and Mark have given us all. Thank you my friend that I never got to meet in person. You will never be forgotten as long as I am living. Swim in them warm waters all the way to heaven......I will miss seeing your content and learningfromyou both. My hart ♥️ goes out to you Mark....
Just came across this gem in my watch later list. So sad that Jake is gone. Great session and very fitting that my lasting memory of Jake will be his quest to call corals by the right name especially Micromussa and early on in this session he had a little rant about them getting called Acans! 🙌 a massive loss to reefing!
Great topic! One aspect that I have found to be beneficial in keeping my costs down in the hobby is to just simply use what I already have as much as I can or when it makes sense to do so. I recently upgraded my tank and almost every component was something that I already had in storage from previous tanks with the exception of a new heater and an additional powerhead.
Loving the podcast guys, appreciate the time ya'll take to make these. I have been listening everyday on my to work. I would like to see a future episode about nano tanks, and would love to hear your thoughts, opinions, suggestions, and experiences with nanos 30 gallons and less. Keep up the great work, love the content.
Hi Jake! It’s funny that you’re telling that story about Aquashella because I happened to be standing at the Tank It Easy booth when you were talking about it. :) I wanted to say hello but didn’t want to interrupt your conversation. It was a super fun show but I was also surprised that there were a couple of vendors who misidentified corals when I was talking to them as well. I’m know that a few of them had people helping out who don’t normally work at the shop though as I know most of the coral vendors in the Chicago area who were there. My buddy Austin (A Train) won the frag off. 😊 Definitely a fun show!
Comments about how products are roled out and reviewed on UA-cam - Spot on! I also follow photography channels. New camera release dates are ridiculous. Your can just scroll through all the major channels doing the exact same thing - reviewing a camera that they've had for a few weeks.
So sad this is the last Reef Therapy episode. Heart breaking such an early departure with so many projects and beloved ones left behind. A great legacy for the hobby was built though.
If you haven't been back to NY, Joe Yaiullo got some seriously large fish now too. He's got the unicorn tang that's gotta be almost 20" long and some real beefy rabbitfish
Speaking of ATO noise, Mark do you ever hear it running doing it’s thing and it runs considerably longer than what are used to hearing and you automatically run to the cabinet and open up the door to look at the sump to see if something is wrong? My tank is in the living room so I hear the ATO pump all the time and usually 5-10 seconds is all it runs for and sometimes I get a good 30 plus seconds and totally catch myself flying to the tank to look. Even though I got the old reliable Tunze I always fear an ATO related disaster. Awesome stream guys! Top 5 for me
I felt personally attacked during the intro about freshwater hobbiest being generalist lol. I have close to 30 freshwater aquariums/tubs that I use to sell fish and plants for profit. I specialize in alot of rare floating plants and fancy and rare livebearers(goodieds). but the truth is I barely know 10% of the scientific names of the plants and fish I keep off the top of my head. I always refer to everything by its common name. when I first started out selling plants online I would list them by their scientific name and they would barely sell, but when I switched over to putting the common names in the titles there was a noticeable increase in sales. I think the reason you find less people nerding out with freshwater is because the barrier to entry is much lower regarding cost, upkeep, and knowledge. The truth is alot of freshwater people accidentally stumble into being a hobbiest because their kid won a goldfish at the fair, or they bought a betta in a vase with a peace lily from a street vendor.
How awesome would it be if you could make a DIY episode with Joey? It'd be awesome for him to be able to go back and talk about his DIY roots without having to remake the same videos over again
I couldn't afford a nicer new tank, but I would not ever buy a used acrylic again. i had one blow out on me and two others threaten to do so. Never had that problem with used glass. Also, I *do* need a controller, because I make a lot of dumb mistakes by accident...almost all of my prior crashes could have been prevented if I'd had something to warn me...if someone says it's expensive, I tend to reply that so is losing a tank full of pets and corals...I'll be saving on the equipment whenever I can, though. I'd like to interject that you want to buy used equipment that is fairly young and has been cared for properly. I went through a great deal of frustration with my first used reef because the equipment kept breaking.
I pissed off a vendor at RAP a few years ago who was selling a heliopora as an sps and I corrected him on the spot. He looked at me as if I was crazy, I think he thought it was an sps and not a true octocoral.
Selling single polyp zoanthus is the most ridiculous thing that ever happened to this hobby. The fact that people buy single polyps is insane to me. How the fuck do you see the details of these animals from a foot away without a huge magnifying glass? I guess there’s a benefit to being in this hobby for decades?
I think that perhaps you're confusing his passion and often times frustration with ego and arrogance. Maybe I'm wrong I do not know him personally. 🤷♂
I've met jake, I'm going to say that's just your perception of him cause he was nothing but pleasant to me. he took time out of his day with his wife and answered questions and I didn't feel any judgment from him. he even bought me a frag. but I'm not a pro and don't come across as one either, I think when you are portraying yourself as one i.e. the vendor at aquashella then he holds you to a higher standard. we all do it in our perspective industries.
AH BEN! Heya, I've been looking for a book about Tahiti, I haven't found the email of Pauline Bosserelle. I contacted asso-opunohuAAAcriobe-pf (Institue). Funny you mention that book, its ... well.. kinda of connected to a project I'm trying to start. BTW Jake, whenever you mention a book, thank you. Ça tombe pas sous l'oreille d'un sourd. Facebook deleted my account so I can't contact anymore... Haven't watch the other part of the podcast, will listen later... I'm building something without money so curious to hear what you guys come up.

Rest in paradise Jake Adams, you will truly be missed. You are a very big inspiration to this whole hobby and everyone that enters it.

We miss you Jake ❣️ I loved this topic and conversation, had to listen again

I had finally listened to this last episode 😭
I was holding back, still in disbelief, hoping its not true and you are still among us.
Rest in peace.
1:56:13 THANK YOU FOR BEING WITH US JAKE, I ALWAYS WANTED TO TELL YOU THAT IN PERSON AT SOME REEF EVENT...
As a Canadian, I appreciate the thumbnail 😂
I thought the same thing....first way to save money is don't use the Canadian Dollar
Bahah I love both you for saying that.....FJB and FJT
Rest in peace, brother Jake. The world will miss you dearly.
This was a very wholesome and needed conversation.

I love herons bonsai UA-cam Chanel
Rip Jake your still the man and my reefing mentor….. I strongly regret being to nervous to ask for a autograph last time I seen you!!
YOU WILL BE MISSED JAKE!!! REST IN PEACE! I know the hobby just got a little better in heaven!!!
I love my succulents- they are made by lego 😂

Look up “crime pays botany doesn’t”. Funny plant page with good content, and he really knows what he’s talking about

I wish I knew what snorkel shop he was talking about cuz I'm going to Hawaii next week and want to support the right shop.

Reef and cactus baby
Speaking of oversized fish when is the episode with Andrew Sandler? Would love to hear your expert take on that amazing reef

Hey Jake and Brother Marc, any discus channels you follow or that you could recommend?
The king of DIY has reinvested in a couple of discus tanks, he is great at demystifying aquarium keeping. ua-cam.com/video/c3uJUrvI2zc/v-deo.html
You changed seats, why you changed seats

The issue is that there's very few successful hobbies commenting on their long term success with cheap equipment.
