Ryan, your approach to this series should be commended. It's a wonderful combination of hobbyist methodology mixed with the appropriate underlying scientific concepts. Which as you like to say, is a likley path to success. All too often, it's not enough just knowing something has been successful, it's also critical to understand why. If you don't understand why; you can't tweak it, you can't troubleshoot an issue, or adapt it to another scenario. But your framework for this series seems to deliver the Why in an easily digestible format. Second, the sheer number of tanks showing diversity of species, intentional themes, and distinct aesthetics serves as a wonderful example to hobbyist. It's not the same mixed reef over-and-over, which can certainly be beautiful, but also becomes repetitive. Instead your showing the breadth of the hobby, in formats people can invision in there homes. Great job Sir.
Wooo hell yeah Softies tank. Honestly all I want out of a Reeftank is just a giant Leather and a forest of Kenya Trees. Something about how so many fish and inverts interact with each other that's so delightful
Just making my way through this series to prep for my new build, first one in over a decade. Question: why not use an algae scrubber instead of a fuge?
Nope. Other than ozone is on my tank with a refugium that runs fine. The unknowns of ozone have held us all back. Using it one hour a day at 1-2 am eliminates almost all of them for me.
@@BRStvRyan- you’ve mentioned in previous videos that Ozone eliminated problem algae (diatoms, etc) in your 360 when you first ran it, and you could see that under the microscope. If ozone sterilizes the bacterial strands that caused the diatoms to go away, then in theory the macro algae being grown is, at the least, being stunted or partially harmed by ozone addition, right? Conceptually it’d stand to reason. (Presumably that’s also why Pax Bellum says ozone is incompatible with their reactors). So the question may be, is refuigum performance affected by ozone, and if so, is the effect significant enough that we should counteract it, or is the impact negligible.
@@BRStv I agree! Have you run it that way for at least a few months? I didn’t consider it because they have “NOT SUBMERSIBLE” warnings all over. Maybe they really mean “top half not submersible” 😂
Nice video. I'm looking to get the same mount for the kessil a360x plus the AI blades, but I cant find it in your website? And what type of AI blades did do and how many ? Appreciate the help

I don’t think I’ve seen BRS talk about when you want to mount a Radion normally vs turning it long ways. I’d love to know the advantages/disadvantages and the situations that justify changing orientation. 🤔
if you have two over a 120 mount normally to get the best coverage. If you have three over a 120 and they are spaced closer the advantage turns to orientating them front to back.
I love the aquascape! Amazing tank again. When is the Maxspect aquariums will be aviable? Did you mentioned which fishes would be in ? I will watch it again😂
What are you guys using in these systems as a backup power supply to the return pump? I personally would never run a tank without this. You can have all the monitors in the world but if the power goes out and your return pump doesn’t keep running you could be screwed. It’s important to keep water running through the whole system.
Or go with a Hydros Kraken that is a whole system battery backup, not just pumps….no extra controllers needed as it’s already built into the module itself
Maybe I’m out of touch but since when do you need all those things on a softie tank. If you got everything they talked about that’s probably 20K, you can farm softies with a fallow tank, reef roids, a cheap LED light and little to no water changes. I have a lot of the stuff talked about but I’ve been in the hobby 20 years. Entry level hobbiest should try and keep it simple.
The goals of these videos is not to suggest you "need" anything. It's to explore and understand the biology of the animals and then share how we are going to serve them with these tanks. Just "our way." We want to create something visually powerful as well. Unless the tank has an unlimited budget, nearly everyone will take what they think is most important and leave the rest. I guess we could explicitly say that in every video, but I think it is kind of implied with every piece of content on reefing or really any hobby or pet care. In the end, the pursuit and application of knowledge to a result is everyone's goal. Take what fits the stage you are in and leave the rest.
Thx for the reply, I am a fan of all the videos so keep up the good work. I guess Im saying I’d like to see some more simple setups in the future as I think newbies need to see both sides of the hobby.
You probably scared off a bunch of potential reefers adding everything under the sun to that softy tank! Should have started simply and added equipment as needed.
I understand what you are getting at, but this video isn't designed for "potential reefers". We are trying to build some really epic displays based on an understanding of the biology of the animals We could open with something simple, but that's akin to a video on how to make french pastries opening with a tube of Pillsbury croissants. There is an audience/content mismatch :)
1.25% daily is not the same as 10% weekly or 35% monthly. I get the point in that the small incremental water changes are beneficial….but your numbers are wrong. After each water change, the new water is mixed with the unchanged old water. The ATC system cannot removed only old water, so each day it reduces mixed water. Doing a 1.25% daily water change is beneficial, but after 7 days, you have effectively replaced less water than physical leaders of water. It ends up being around 8.5% after a week and 31.5% after a month. At 56 days you hit about 50%. Because of diminishing returns on incremental water changes, you end tapering off around 98.99% around a year😂 And just to note, I have done incremental water changes back in my apartment days using aqua-medic dosers on X-10 timers. This method is time tested and true. I just dont want to see people being mis-lead they can do a 100% water change every 80 days based on a 1.25% daily.
We use this calculator to make this point. www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/EffectiveWaterChange.phpr The calculator suggests on a 100-gallon system 1.25 gallons a day results in 28.69% new water in 28 days. 10 gallons once a week for 28 days results in 34.38% new water.. 35% monthly is 35%. Technically speaking 1.5% would be closer however, I doubt many reefers would ever be able to account for internal dimensions, sump, rock, and sand displacement and still get within 0.25% of water volume. Point made though and make the slight adjustment in future presentations, Thanks :)
I think the best type of supplements for Coral Food is marin Fauna from germany. I have had RedSea for a while but with very little growth, as well as seachem zooplankton. But as soon as I got Marin Fauna, my zoas went from 7 to 50 in two weeks. So I'm sticking with the germans. Americans are no good lmfao
I have had better luck with many German additive approches as well. I think the reason they don't do as well in the US is price, and they often don't say what's in them, only the results they produce. It's a leap of faith. US reefers have been burned for decades by snake oil and misinformation so it is hard to get past.

FINALLY!!!! More softies to the people!
I think it will be a epic tank
Awesome. , all the bells & whistles , good argument for the gyre & the ozone . You da Man !
The gyres do things I just cant do with other pumps
Wow, the technology towards succcessful reefing has grown so much from when I did it! Way to teach it. Good job!
Amazing when you look back :)
I actually think it was easier 20 years ago. I've had nothing but issues with my recent builds the past few years.
Thanks for sharing, you know I met Ryan at a tradeshow reefapalooza New York, and he is so tall. He's like a tower amongst the crowd!!

No tease for the next tank to be introduced?
Hint: its magnificent
Can you provide links to the exact lights being used?
Please review the fluval 3.0 marine lights
BRS - have you all done any testing on how / if ozone use affects a refugium?
Nope. Other than ozone is on my tank with a refugium that runs fine. The unknowns of ozone have held us all back. Using it one hour a day at 1-2 am eliminates almost all of them for me.

I’m intrigued by the UPS backup battery. How is that working so far? Has anyone else tried this?
Anyone know what zoa that is? 0:08
He said he stands his uv up in the sump. So it's partially submerged in water?
Yes, as long as water pumps from the bottom up so air escapes it is a non issue.
what type of anemone and clownfish go well together?
Can you submerge half of the UV body in water (for Aqua UV brand)?? If so we need more info on that-would be a game changer simplifying installation
We didn’t see any reason you couldn’t. Just a pipe and fittings. Water does need to go in the bottom and out the top.

Tribal knowledge :)
