You have just inspired me to purchase a lovely cashmere v neck sweater. I know the sweater is too low, but I'll just add a lacy camisole underneath and embrace your little details. Thank you!
I agree that a little surprise, a little skin showing in the right place is sexy and sophisticated. A trend, an edge, a little something “ new” does add an elevated look to classic fashion. I am 66 years and want to dress age appropriate but not like an old woman. ( My husband says” you are old”.)Adding a little something to classic style is fun and keeps it fresh and still age appropriate. I believe that Classic style done right transcends age. Thank you Marie - Anne for these reminders and tips.
Is there a way you can convey to your husband that his ideas about aging are destructive and that it is pretty sadistic to say what he thinks to a wife he has taken a vow to "cherish"? Glad you are not deterred from enjoying yourself and being stylish in spite of his attitude.....
Good Morning Marie-Anne! How lovely to hear you talking about Jean-Paul on this rainy Sunday morning in the UK! I wanted to say how much you have influenced my style. I have your books but love listening to your lessons. Thankyou so much! Jane🥰 x
Hmmm... not sure what I think. Happiness is in the details.....yes, I love little details, like unusual buttons, top stitching in different colours, piping, a patterned lining. My new navy shift dress has darts at the front waistline that are sewn down, top stitched in a diamond shape; love that! I wore it Sunday over a white blouse with lace details, lacy navy tights, navy low heels, a burgundy suede biker jacket and a long gold necklace. I felt so good! I do try to see beauty everywhere. We drove home today as the sun was setting over the water, gold, pink, amber, pale blue and the silhouette of black branches against the sky. It would make a gorgeous pattern on a dress. How can I refresh my classics? is just good sense. Fast fashion would have us replace everything but it’s far better to restyle older items with new and make a new outfit sing. Maybe I have learned something, after all! 🌸
I remember seeing Jean-Paul Gautier in Paris on two occasions, once he was browsing at Collette and the 2nd time he was wearing an electric blue silk shirt standing in front of a painting in the same shade of blue at The Pompidou to have his photo taken with the painting, I believed the artist was Yves Tauguay. You right he always expresses a sense of fun. His signature blue striped tee shirts have been a wardrobe essential for many years.
My favorite comment is #3. Your comment about longevity of the classic style and adding something to "refresh" ones look gave me much incite. I think this mindset helps to keep a classic look appealing.
I agree with you 100%. I think he also like to shock us a little to get us to think outside the box. Classics are my favourite way to dress but like you said just adding a touch of the unexpected does give you the feeling that you are up to date but still classic. Love all your videos.
I've never been a fan of JL Gaultier but I will happily agree with what he said in the 3 quotes you chose :) They reflect what my French grand-parents and parents always taught me, and they are a part of our culture. It was such a pleasure to watch your video, as always. Thank you! :)
I love this series that you do about lessons that you've learned from famous designers. Back in the 90s I attended one of Madonna's "Blonde Ambition" concerts in Los Angeles. I will always remember those costumes John-Paul Gaultier designed. That show would not have been nearly as memorable without his contribution.
I was fortunate to see the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition at the Deyoung Museum of Art in San Francisco. to be able to see his iconic designs in person. From the madonna outfits to the Fifth Element out fits. It was an amazing experience and all the three lessons you talked about were present through out the exhibition. Marie please look up that exhibition. There is a lot of wonderful information about it.
On appreciating and finding beauty everywhere- yesterday as I was cleaning the lint trap in my clothes dryer, I was struck by the beauty of some soft, fluffy gorgeously aqua (new towels) lint. I love these unexpected moments of beauty and joy!
Somewhat sad news but in all fairness Jean Paul Gaultier has been in business for a long time and he has made his mark in the fashion world! Love all three things you've learned from JPG Marie-Anne and shared in this video but the most important I think is how to refresh the classics constantly without compromising ones personal style.
I love Jean P Gaultier´s energy, good idea to retire of big responsabilities. Very smart lessons of a great designer like him. Your outfit are one of my favorites.
How very interesting and informative. I love the classics with an unexpected element which is usually shoes, hosiery, color combos, scarves, handbags. I like the idea of "refreshed". Then outfits for the day do not become boring but unique. Always something to learn from your videos and I look forward to each one. I wonder whom your next designer might be?
aha! So so happy you did this video Anne-Marie! Lesson 1: I inherited a JPG coat from the 80’s and couldn’t figure out why it buttons on the man’s side, left over right. I thought it was a mistake. I never would have known!!! It changes how I feel about the coat. If only the shoulders weren’t quite so big. I should get over it right? and learn from lesson 3. Find a way to bring it up to date with an accessory or footwear.
I love how you share such a mix ... from style lessons to outfits to French lifestyle/eating/skincare... And it is funny how Coco Chanel and Gaultier flipped the script on each other. :-) The detailing is something I am still trying to learn. For me I have to change the opposite... instead of adding a touch of masculine to feminine, I need to add a touch of feminine to the pants-suit. One reason I loved the video a while back that showed French woman business suits. Very professional, but not stale or masculine.
Always love your videos and especially listening to your accent 😁 it would be fun to have some examples from each lesson! Visuals are often a game changer for me 😉
Couldn’t agree more with you again. Details are always special and change everything when it comes to clothes, accessories and even in behavior. A different thread or new buttons can be as adorable as a white rose out of nowhere from someone special. Finding beauty everywhere is something people is not used to but we really must open our eyes and discover so many magic things that we can’t see in people and around us. Refreshing classics and even refreshing ourselves is very French in deed. Subtle changes, subtle improvements in our outfits and our look keeps us being ourselves but always brings out some hidden features that were always there. By the way Marie-Anne, your look today was so effortlessly refreshing. You were chic as usual but somehow you looked 10 years younger and I used to think you always looked incredibly young. You see there’s always something new, something unexpected and something that changes just by adding or subtracting a little thing. Je dois vous le dire de tout mon coeur: Viva la France chic et elegante toujours! A bientot Marie-Anne! (Je pense que je ne pourrai jamais ecrire un peu!😹)
Hello MarieAnne I enjoyed the information of today’s video I never liked JPG style and never payed attention to his carrier You opened my mind today Merci I’m always learning from your welt of information looking forward to see the Paris fashion week styles 😁 please keep us informed of your opinion in the new coming collections
Three great style lessons! I was a teenager in the late 60s, and an art student in the 70s, and we had so many fashion and style influences to play with. Some styles which remain are the Masculine/feminine jeans..like Levis and Wranglers, and classic boots, like Doc Martens. Also, sometimes wearing a classic style, but oversized. For instance, I wear my Trench coat very long and very big! It's just fun that way, and practical too.
Really enjoyed this video. Lovely to hear you talk so warmly and knowledgeably about such a star of the fashion world. My first memory of Jean Paul Gaultier was watching him present Eurotrash with Antoine de Caunes!!!! Love how he challenges the concept of male and female, with his fashion and fragrance. Loved his use of tartan kilts on the catwalk. Of course, who can forget those Madonna costumes!!! Magnifique!
I love Gautier. I managed to collect 3 of his vintage perfumes bc the bottles have that Madonna corset appliqué...they’re so unique, the bottles become art. I like when design houses were owned by the designer...too many now are owned by a company that controls their artistic vision(Donna Karan, Norma Kamali, Betsy Johnson, etc). Long live the renegades!💗💐
Love the second quote/lesson. What a lovely, positive way to view things. Certainly would boost the mood to embrace this one! I love the mix of feminine/masculine vibe! Think Marlena Dietrich and singers, Annie Lennox and Patti Smith. Crazy cool.
you remind me so much of Audrey Tautou today, in that striped t-shirt and your haircut Marie-Anne.... and those style lessons of Jean-Paul Gaultier are truly invaluable
Excellent video, Marie-Anne! Very informative! I was in my 20s in the 90s, watching Gaultier's creation and innovations and I thought "how bold and beautiful"! I am always seeking of that humour and "little details" to update my classic style, because, as you said in the video, unexpectancy is always something positive in one's style. Is it possible to make a video about how to incorporate humourous or unexpected details in a classic wardrobe (or send me a link )? Thank you.
I will miss Jean-Paul Gaultier. He is correct, some little pop of a surprise is always fun with an outfit. Simplicity is sometimes the best in any outfit. I totally agree with refreshing what you have in your closet. Match them in a way you have never done before can result in a beautiful and amazing outfit you never tried before. Love your videos. You always amaze me with your knowledge. Merci Marie-Anne.
Great video! I'm a huge fan of marinier, I have quite a few in my wardrobe from saint-James and Armour lux(my favourites). I loved that Jean-Paul used unconventional models, such as full figured women , playing with traditional gender roles..he really is an icon for sure! fantastic video!
Merci Anne-Marie! I love your video and I also love JPG! It’s very interesting your insight about his style. It makes me appreciate better. Do you know why is he retiring from the fashion show?
You have such a classically beautiful face that the short hair really highlights. May I say I vote for just a teensy-really teensy- bit more feminine length to the side pieces and back. Just my taste, a bit more of the gamine to go with your animation and sweetness.
I suppose these topics could be discussed for weeks if one were to do so in depth. I'm always up for conversations, but I'll take a backseat this time. Thanks for the video!

Well said Linda!
Very enjoyable watching you! Thank You so much, Lilly

Details matters
Thanks for reminding about lace camisole under a blazer etc

I like hearing how designers think about style. 😎
Marianne you spoke so profound of the essence of Jean Paul. I love his soul. Tfs X

Cala Mitchell. You are so right. Finding beauty in the ordinary, everyday occurrences makes like so much richer.❤️
You are so charming in your passion to beauty, such a please to learn your little tips that make huge difference. Thank you

By the way, I’m a big fan of the marinier and I always have some in my wardrobe. Possibly because when I was a child I wore a sailor type uniform.
I love Jean P Gaultier´s energy, good idea to retire of big responsabilities. Very smart lessons of a great designer like him. Your outfit are one of my favorites.
I LOVE videos about style lessons!! Im looking forward for my favourite, Givenchy.
Marie-Anne Lecoeur I am anxious!
I love this type of video - very interesting and full of good takeaways!

Bonjour Marie Anne yes I agree some times one has to bring in a wildcard and a bit of androgyny 💕
Loved your top and that shade of blue!

great- thank you! Marie- Anne!

Oh I must have been looking at something else and missed them. Thanks so much
Thank you for the style remainders. I keep forgetting about adding the little detail. to my clothes..something to work on my future outfits.
Your hair looks great in this video. The piece-y bangs are very youthful.

Jean Paul can not be replaced. He is one and only, the Maestro!
I just love your fashion style and lessons! 💙
Love his sense of fun and the extrordinay
Oh my good I loved this content Marie-Anne. Refresh those classics.
Merci. I like all 3 tips. And, especially his quotes. I will try to do these in my life.
Is there any videos of you I have not seen about BELTS? I am very intersted in sizes, colours, everything.. :) merci!
I have worn stripes all my life and loved them , never new they were very French 🤗

Denise Herud I still have a vintage bottle of his JPG signature fragrance. Men especially love it.

Nice video. I learned something. Thank you.
And what a coincidence! Just today I decided a very fuxia tie were the perfect detail to refresh my navy suit. Le Bonheur EST Dan's le detail.
Excellent video, Marie-Anne! Very informative!

Interesting points. I mostly know him for the conical bra look and hadn't paid attention to him.
Encore une excellente vidéo ! 👌
Merci beaucoup Marie-Anne! 😊
Good morning, Madam Marie. Jean is extremely talented.
I will miss Jean-Paul Gaultier. He is correct, some little pop of a surprise is always fun with an outfit. Simplicity is sometimes the best in any outfit.

Hi Marie Anne I really enjoyed this video 🤗
Thanks for the video.Love your red lipstick! It would be boring if you wore another shade.
I never knew all this about him; really enjoyed this!

Really enjoyed that! 🤔 mmmm wondering how to introduce a bit of a twist or something fun to what I wear without my son laughing at me.....mmmmm.
He’s my favourite designer
Love your hair this length!!!
You have such a classically beautiful face that the short hair really highlights. May I say I vote for just a teensy-really teensy- bit more feminine length to the side pieces and back. Just my taste, a bit more of the gamine to go with your animation and sweetness.
Thank you for this video I might be purchasing a vintage jean Paul gaultier jacket or a ysl jacket which tuxedo jackets do you prefer
Marie-Anne Lecoeur thank you well hopefully I find one with my size and a reasonable price
Marie-Anne Lecoeur also I like the detail with the sailor top like gaultier says the little details
Love your hair in this video!
I suppose these topics could be discussed for weeks if one were to do so in depth. I'm always up for conversations, but I'll take a backseat this time. Thanks for the video!
What do you think of Christian Lacroix?
Great video Marie as always
I am a plus size Apple body type. So mad I shouldn't wear horizontal stripe. Doing it anyway with very thin strips close together.
How would you feel about wearing your striped top with a tailored jacket?
Love Gautier, putting some avant- garde and eccentricity in a usually sober tradition. I think Galliano was the ultimate “enfant terrible” n’est pas?
Always aim to add a bit of edgy to classics.
I will miss Jean-Paul Gaultier's creative inspiration in fashion. Hopefully this is not the last we will hear from him.
Have a navyblue,very embellished jacket...he would like it,for sure
Wonderful content. New SUB here.
Animal print sox every time
I'm not familiar with this designer, I'm sorry. But he sounds as if he's the Picasso of fashion. Is this true? Thank you for the video.
😍
You look lovely today. I bet you turned a few heads.
This video Thatcher me that french chic, caries more than i thought..?.i Think,he is funny...such shame,he stops making US laughing...
I very much hope so...made Madonna look, anything but...Madonna...the pope has not been please...
Not a fan, personally.
