We did it about 10 years ago and needed from Brienzerrothorn to the Harder 12 1/2 hours. If you go a second time then start at the Brünigpass and walk to the summit of the Brienzerrothorn. Then spend the night in the hotel on the summit. That enable a very early start next morning for the ridge. 👍

I did this hike about 2 months ago and my name is also Xander... funny that this got recommended to me! It was probably my favourite hike I did in Switzerland.
Did it in 2020, Brünigpass to Harder Kulm in about 12 hours, 3.4k elevation, arrived with the first train from Zurich. I am not a skyrunner, just a hiker. In general not difficult, about two or three exposed places. Ridge to Morgenberghorn (Leissiggrat) is much sharper and breaks apart under your feet. Last 10 km are boring, but going down straight from Augstmatthorn is also painful. You can refill water at Rothorn, I think I had 2 liters. If I would repeat, I would do only the part between Augstmatthorn and Rothorn.
Thanks a lot man! Yes its quite a special hike haha. Have you seen my second attempt as well? I went back last summer, better prepared! Where are you from?

Its everything combined. Views of snow peaked famous mountains. Views of a big blue Swiss lake. A crazy ridge hike. A physical challenge. Sometimes a mental challenge. I hope you're able to go to Swiss once to try it out!
Yes, the part from Interlaken wasn't hard. We went down just before hard part, as they told us it will be another 4 hours to Rothorn 🤷♀️but after your video I want to come back and finish the trail 😜
Haha it probably was 4 hours, of maybe even longer! At least when you are as scared as i was haha! You should! I want to go again aswell, but then from the side you started and way earlier in the morning 👌🏼
You can try the first section to the first "exit" where you can descent to planalp train station again. The first section is already awesome yet I would still rate it as T3 (the whole ridge is categorised white blue white, means T4+, I think they give a T4), after that exit till Tannhorn it becomes really T4
Thanks a lot! "Saved" my life when i stuck my trekking pole next to the trail haha! As far as i know we didnt encounter any dry river beds on this track!

Absolutely correct; it's not about making it at any price/risk, but also about finding your limits and repeating it. Great video/pictures from our Bernese Oberland. 👍
I did all of them in the beginning of September so it depends of the year! Might get lucky! Take in account that the days are shorter but the Hardergrat is long
It's not really difficult except the short part before you stand on the ridge before Tannhorn. From then on it's just mentally demanding. I had my problems, too. I felt a bit uneasy.
@@WanderwithXander That was a long time ago, about 2009. As I can remember there was only one thin rope at the very beginning of this section. From more recent videos on UA-cam it seems that there are far more ropes now. But it might be that I don't remember correctly. One day I'd like to hike the entire ridge in one day. But I need to lose weight for this, it's very hard.
Just watched your other video, where you succeeded in hiking the whole trail, but started from Interlaken. Do you have a preference as to which way to do the hike - Interlaken to Brienz, or Brienz to Interlaken?
I would say, maybe start at Brienz. Because thats the highest point, so you're more or less descending in between the climbs. But the hike to the brienzer rothorn is quite a lot higher. The train goes too late. So either you're fit enough to hike it up yourself, just as a warm up, or take a train the day before and sleep there! So starting at Interlaken starts a bit less intense but then you still have to climb more during the whole hike!
Am I right that the Tannhorn (and the one before, briefenhornli?) are by far the most dangerous (and scaring part), and if skipped, would make the walk a lot easier (both on mind and feet, and timing schedule? After watching 12+ video's, 2000+ images, maps, google 360°c, my conclusion so far is to drive to Lombachalp, rise to Augstmatthorn (the easiest, and still beautiful, thus most must see top), by first going Suggiture, then doing the 7 tops to Allgauwhoren (Gummhorn, blazenhubel, Schnrirenhornli, Algauw licki, Allgauwhoren), then there is a path down from there, long but easy walk to lombahalp, drive back done :D In perfect world, Harder Kulm + forest walk would be included, but in case we dont make it, would be risky + the forest removes some sight (i take camera with me, to take top quality landscape images, so those top views are my priority). Between Harder Kulm to Allgauwhoren (just before Tannhorn), the ridges seem most of time safe (either 1.5-3 meter wide, or one side that is way less steep, with grass, that should prevent sliding down all way if dry. Since i'm staying 14 days at Brienz, i can just do the Rothorn another day, and perhaps even skip Tannhorn and enjoy view like Planalp, maybe even walk to top and go down. Harder Kulm (maybe even from Interlaken walking all the way), would also be nice hike. Also @ Wander with Xander, did your feet ever slip on a dangerous part (Tannhorn especially)?
That sounds really well informed indeed!! I think you have a great plan there. The Brienzer rothorn is worth the climb as well, just go how far as you want to hike :) if you want to chat with me about it, hit me up on Instagram! Easier talking.
Just: wow! 🤩Huge congratulations that you've made such hike. 🎉 I'm personally also scared of heights and love the mountains at the same time, which is really crazy combo, so I'm scared just watching this video... Liked 👍🏻 Subscribed ⭐
Thanks a lot!! It is a weird but save combination haha, have you seen my full Hardergrat video? I went back this year and finished it :) Have a nice day!
Do you have to be really experienced to do this kind of hike? I'm living in Switzerland and I kind of would like to try this, even though just watching this video makes me feel scared.
I dont have that much of experience myself either. Altough im quite steady on my feet. It's not impossible at all but some parts are a bit sketchy. So only go of you are prepared to turn around if its not your cup of tea. This way you can check it out but maintain your safety!
25km mountain hike in one day? That's rough!! Absolutely looks incredible!!! Well done!! I do have to say, seeing how anxious you got getting on your knees, that you might have overestimated yourself, or underestimated the route. In German they call this "trittsicherheit", and it is very important to understand one's limit for the sake of safety. Perhaps I am being a bit harsh, but I think you really shouldn't be on a route like this.
I completely agree, so after a year of training and getting used to mountain hikes I went back and completed it fully! Please check out the new vid as well, so I can restore your faith in me 😉 Thanks for watching and your comment!
I literally just finished this hike 2 days ago from Brienz to Harder Kulm. Spent the night at Brienz Rothorn hotel. Nothing, not even this video, can really prepare you for what's to come lol it was the most physically demanding thing I've ever done, and mentally it pushed me beyond my limit. It absolutely destroyed me, but I'm proud to say that I made it to Harder Kulm 😁 thank you for the inspiration. Maybe I'll come back to this hike again someday, when I'm stronger and more experienced
Would you say that Tannhorn was the 'biggest challenge', (top with cross, near start, 2200 meter (second highest)? I'm thinking of skipping that part, but including the whole interlaken - Allgauwgoren (one way or the other), and then stop (go down to lombachalp). The part like Suggiture and Harder Kulm seem very doable? ofc steep but so is any mountain to be honest, and the paths seems very chill. Correct me if i'm wrong.
What a beautiful place but soooo scary. I have height vertigo and I can’t stand because I lose my balance so a hike like that is a big no for me. Much respect to you and I hope your mother didn’t see this 😬
It was very very beautiful! Ahh that sounds you will enjoy another hike a little more! Thanks for watching, I had a thrill hiking the hike and making the video!
absolutely beautiful! i've never done a ridge hike before, but i am up to the challenge! i'm young, in great shape, but i'll admit the height has me feeling a little scared lol the views that you show off make me feel like going for it though! i plan on making a solo trip to switzerland and am looking for amazing hikes like this. is it easy to find guides for hikes like this?

When you come to the US hike to Angels Landing in Zion National Park, if you survive that hike the maze in Canyonlands National Park and last but not least hike to Halfdome in Yosemite National Park. All three of these are super dangerous and amazing. Enjoy!
@@WanderwithXander I just hiked to angels landing 2 weeks ago and the sense of relief you get from having taken on such a scary challenge is exhilarating, I experienced pure happiness and joy at Angels landing and if you can make it to Zion National Park and take on this hike you will too. You're acrophobic, it's not just fear. Your motor functions and balance are impaired, it's not just a feeling, you are literally more likely to fall and die. I'm glad you survived the experience but you should take it seriously and realise that it's not just a matter of getting over the fear. There are ways of overcoming it, at least to an an extent, through exposure therapy in a safe environment.
Thanks for your concern, I'm quite happy I made it as well. I did some more careful and safe stuff after this and this year I felt ready. And it was a big succes this time! Feel free to check it out: ua-cam.com/video/Gf8LUGehaJA/v-deo.html Thanks for your comment!
Your friend should NEVER have taken you on that hike, as you are not accustomed to the steep drop-offs and hights, nor to this level of alpine hiking combined with climbing on fairly exposed trails (and I'm wondering if he is - as he clearly could not properly assess the personal abilities versus the requirements of the trail), IMHO. This is the kind of understimation of the alps ond overestimation of one''s abilities that can land you on the title page of the boulevard press very quickly if you slip and fall (and many DO land there - almost every weekend!). Just this weekend it was two inexperienced and inadequately dressed, young ladies freezing to death on the Monte Rosa in a "sudden" snow storm... It's good you decended once you realized the time plan was shot and did not try to push through to the end. Glad you made it. Just 2 weeks ago I was witness to a person falling 30 meters off an exposed part of a mountain side, splitting his skull on the rocks and dying at the scene a few minutes later. It is SO much better to use that brain for researching the skills required for an alpine hike BEFORE going there!
Agree with you, many people underestimate it because it is only "2000m" ...yet it's white blue white (for very good reason), I think it's T4 to be precise, and personally I think it is a very tough T4, mostly exposed on both sides, narrow top, good "chance" to slip on the grass...compared to bettmergrat (also T4) for example I think the brienzer gratweg is more difficult
@Wander with Xander Yep! I have walked a little bit of the Hardergrat when I was a teenager, and because of my fear of heights, my body just shuts down and I can't go on. I backtracked and said never again 😅

And no, I never slipped! But I had one instance where I placed my pole in the air instead of the ground. That was a bit scary! Haha
hi, are you sure that there is a way down from Allgauwhoren to Lombachalp? How long does it take to get down?
You can check my recent video on how to hike this hike or the AllTrails map to be sure!
solid work doing it tomorrow
Nice man, good luck!
may I know that song on start to hike??
I think it is Odezsa but maybe you can try Shazam?
@@WanderwithXander thank you
Hi Xander! in which month was this filmed?
September!
Me: Damn, this is scary. I would panic so much on this trail. Also me: saving this video for a future hike :))
Hahaha thanks man!! Make sure to check out my 2021 version as well, we completed it that time! And made a GPX file of it, in the description ✌🏼
Wow would love to hike that one day.
I would recommend it! I might head back as soon as the borders open!
whats the name of the first song in this video??
You mean the piano song? Its "epic piano" from Jack Winn! After that is "A moment apart" from Odesza.
@@WanderwithXander the one thats playing as youre walking/climbing along the ridge. Man, i still have trouble even watching that part!
I think thats the Odesza one! 🙌🏼 Haha it was quite sketchy! Hope you enjoyed it
@@WanderwithXander was the odesza one. Thanks for that and keep making great videos!
Thank you! I will do my best, more coming up! Also about to hike the TMB and just came back from the Pilates Mountain near Luzern
Beautiful views
I can only agree!
@@WanderwithXander Just watched the 2nd part - awesome! :)) Have a great day!
Cool, thanks! You too!!
Congrats!! What a hike right, its unique! I finished it last year, but from Interlaken to Brienz, have you seen that video as well? You can be proud!
You're totally right, the Tannhorn part on the Brienz-side is the sketchy and tough part!
Wise decision. Very nice hike!
Thanks! I made a video about my 2021-attempt and another video about how to hike the hardergrat yourself :)
absolutely beautiful! i've never done a ridge hike before, but i am up to the challenge! i'm young, in great shape, but i'll admit the height has me feeling a little scared lol the views that you show off make me feel like going for it though! i plan on making a solo trip to switzerland and am looking for amazing hikes like this. is it easy to find guides for hikes like this?
Thanks for your compliment! It is an amazing and one of a kind trek in my opinion! Great to hear you're inspired to give it a try, be careful though! Only go when it feels right. I have my channel full of hikes with GPX routes. I think guides can be arranged over there. Just search for trekking guide grindelwald / Interlaken. Have fun!! Let me know how it goes or dm me on instagram if you have any questions!
when covid blows over here (australia) i can’t wait to go to switzerland and do a few hikes for the first time
Aah it will be amazing!! There are so many nice hikes to choose from!
Nice video !!!
Thanks!!
what‘s the BGM?
Im not sure what BGM means.. Im sorry

Thanks!
Good Job👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks!
😰 niet normaal zo eng. En gevaarlijk ja! Respect!!!
Hahaha ja was wel spannend, hier hebben we hem volledig afgelegd: ua-cam.com/video/Gf8LUGehaJA/v-deo.html
❤❤❤❤
Why do they use walking sticks in this terrain? They lose the sense of balance.
I wouldnt take them with me if i would go again. But the sketchy part is only a small part of the whole hike, so I enjoyed them on the other parts!
Cool!
When doing a ridge climb, if your partner falls off one side, you must jump over the other. Of course it helps if you are roped together.😜
Hahah i would consider, if I was roped up 😉
Never heard of safety measures? A rope and a pickle, for example? Accidents happen!
IF YOU HAVE FEAR OF HEIGHTS, YOU SHOULD NOT EVEN CONSIDER THIS TRAIL AN OPTION FOR A HIKE. IT IS WRITEN EVERYWHERE !!! So you were unconscious going there.
Haha thanks for the advice. All fear is personal and relative but I would agree with you in most cases!
nope at around 3 minutes.
Haha feel you! I made another video about the hike as well, did you see that one too?
@@WanderwithXander It is a lovely video, I enjoyed it very much.
Thanks a lot!!
👍👍👍
Like a raung mount in indonesia
Would love to go there! I did go to (a small part) of Sumatra, Bali and Flores! Do you live there?
@@WanderwithXander i live in east java
Beautiful!
Uahhhhh…. Would be impossible to walk up there….
Haaha it was a small path indeed
Hey everyone, thanks for watching! Guess what, I went back and completed the whole hike last week! 3000m+ vertical gain and 35K, I was completely exhausted. Maybe you want to check it out? ua-cam.com/video/Gf8LUGehaJA/v-deo.html
Wow
Highly recommended ✌🏼
Nice Video Thank You 👍and a New Abonnent, grüße Michael
Thanks a lot! Its appriciated!
When you come to the US hike to Angels Landing in Zion National Park, if you survive that hike the maze in Canyonlands National Park and last but not least hike to Halfdome in Yosemite National Park. All three of these are super dangerous and amazing. Enjoy!
I have heard about Angels Landing, looks insane! Sounds like i have to go there some day 🤩
@@WanderwithXander I just hiked to angels landing 2 weeks ago and the sense of relief you get from having taken on such a scary challenge is exhilarating, I experienced pure happiness and joy at Angels landing and if you can make it to Zion National Park and take on this hike you will too. I hope to see you on the trail here in the US someday.
Sounds really good! I saw some video's about it, so cool! Will definitly check it out if im ever around!! Thanks for the tip
Hey this the song from forza
Haha nice! It is!
@@WanderwithXander great video btw 👌
Thanks!!
oeh think i'll go there
Aanrader!! Ik ga er ook weer naar terug als 't weer kan!
My wife would be hilarious trying to negotiate this. So would I be, come to think
Hahah I facetimed my girlfriend while on there, she wasn't that happy with me!
Scary
It was!
Thanks for your concern, I'm sorry to hear you witnessed something horrible like that. I have learned from it.
I went back last summer and completed it in a save and confident way! You can find the video on my UA-cam :)
why is it dangerous
Along the 33k hike there is about a 20k stretch where if you place one step wrong you will fall around 30 meters down and most likely wont survive..
Wunderschön aber viel zu riskant.
Wer weiß wie viele schon verunglückt sind.
🥰👏👏👏
That's really not a hike you should do if you have any fear of heights and are not very surefooted.
I went back in 2021, luckely better prepared and had a lot of fun completing the whole hike! I totally agree with you haha
Could be the case! Thanks for the imput
I love hiking in the mountains but NOPE
Haha you have met your match?
@Wander with Xander Yep! I have walked a little bit of the Hardergrat when I was a teenager, and because of my fear of heights, my body just shuts down and I can't go on. I backtracked and said never again 😅
Haha then this hike might not have been the best for you, I can imagine you turning back! Are you trying again or are you more into other hikes now?
@@WanderwithXander I just avoid ridges like that. Just completed the Rothaarsteig in Germany, very nice trail. Haven’t hiked in Switzerland for ages, would love to go back.
Sounds good! Will have to look into that one, I see you dont post video's about it right?
Man I would love to do this hike. 14km in 6 hours? Thats super fast!
Thanks man! It was awesome! Do you live in Europe?
@@WanderwithXander No, Canada.
Planning to go to Switzerland or does Canada offer enough mountains? 😄
@@WanderwithXander Canada has a ton of mountains... they're different tho. And you can only go in summer cause it's all super cold.
Looks very dangerous to me
It was quite sketchy to say the least!
