    The 1996 classic, Scream was a more satirical take on the even more classic slasher movie genre. Despite this, Slasher veteran, horror god and legendary director Wes Craven was brought on to direct. This results in a self aware slasher, poking fun at the tropes the entire running time, while also delivering some legit scares and tension when the body count rises.

    The film that gave us:
    -One of the most iconic horror villains ever.
    -One of the greatest horror movie final girls ever.
    -Two of the best co-star horror characters ever.
    -One of the greatest opening kills ever.
    -Etc.
    RIP Wes Craven.

    Scariest thing in this movie are the doppelgangers of Johnny Depp and Seth Green.
    Note Decker , Garage doors kill 20-30 people a year and injure around 20000. The heavier ones , like that wood one in the film could possibly do something like that to a person if the safety locks were not working and/or the mechanism set up in a non-standard way. The spring systems are very dangerous when under tension. They are nothing to be messing with if you don't know what you are doing, especially the big 1.5 HP/double car garage/heavy ones..

    • @donjean6590
      @donjean6590 2 роки тому +3

      Yeah we had one of those single door double garage ones. The door itself was metal with a metal frame and had 4 massive springs to tension it. We were in the process of replacing it due to how heavy and dangerous it was when the hook on one snapped.
      That door use to come down with a hell of a thud and took effort to actually slow because of the weight.

    Rian Johnson, no question he'd fuck it up by trying too hard to 'subvert expectations'. He doesn't have the understanding/passion for the genre that Wes Craven does, so anything tongue in cheek or self aware would spend half its time obnoxiously winking at the camera about how stupid the whole thing is instead of letting the audience take the scary moments seriously. And he probably would have cast someone like Jada Pinkett as the lead, someone the audience wouldn't want to spend any time with.

  • @largo621

    For the alternate universe Scream, my money would be on Paul Verhoeven, who would have made a fine film, but it would have been misunderstood as a genuine slasher, and it would have sunk.

    You're forgetting something else "Scream" did. It gave Henry Winkler something that people know him for other than "Happy Days". The man deserves it.
    Also, the mystery angle was handled better in the "Scream" TV show. That was the best iteration of this franchise, and nothing can convince me otherwise.

    • @Joker_JAK
      @Joker_JAK 2 роки тому +2

      To be fair, a TV show has more time to set up a mystery. A movie only has a couple of hours. Unless they do a trilogy and don't reveal the killer until the end of the third film. I highly doubt fans would care for that though.

    • @camerondodge2070
      @camerondodge2070 2 роки тому +1

      @@Joker_JAK Yes, but a good mystery like that can still be concocted for one film. I think what's more pressing in this case was that they were already trying to find the perfect balance of comedy and horror, and so the mystery kind of had to get the short end of the stick.

    I agree mostly. I found a few pacing issues, mainly from when Sidney 1st encounters Ghostface to when the party starts it can drag a little. But once they hit the house party, the movie is just great. In a way, it really does feel like Craven shot it like he was shooting a teen comedy. Still, iconic and fun.

    Props to you Decker, {long time lurker, first time commenter here.) The biggest thing I believe you neglected to mention was that Drew Barrymore was a legit star at this time and was the biggest name in the cast. (Also top billing on the promotional material) So the act of killing her off so brutally in the first 10 minutes was such a huge shock to the audience that it set the tone and Noone knew what to expect after that. Aewsome review, thanks for finally doing it.
