i was wondering whether to keep them plastic covers, good to know! similar things apply to all brushes (including makeup brushes :) ) so i already knew to lay them down horizontally and shape them after wash. seems logical just washing with water is enough, but good to hear
I saw a tip somewhere (sorry I don’t remember where) to use a wooden soap dish to lay brushes on. Because the soap dish has a zigzag top, you can lay your brushes horizontally without them rolling off the table. I use it when I’m painting with more than one brush, and also as a place to let the brushes dry after cleaning them. Bonus - I found mine at a dollar store! :)
I don't think this affects them adversely, but I normally rinse mine under the faucet and then press the hairs between a paper towel. I'll have to try the finger tip shaping you demonstrated. Thanks for a good video!
Love the boiling water trick - I noticed my favorite brush had some stragglers because I’d been doing dry brush with it and it didn’t hold form afterwards. The boiling water worked! I too, have maintained my brushes in good form for about 20 years:) Thanks for the fun and informative video. You have so much personality:)
Thanks. I worked at an art and craft store on stocked brushes. If the cover came off, we did not replace them for fear of messing up the shape. Boiling water maybe fine, but don't dip too deep in the hot water. Boiling water can damage the glue. But great info.
Great input, thanks for sharing. Yes, that hot water could be troublesome to the glue! I don't use this method often, just as a last ditch effort to save a brush -- but that is a good call, thanks for your comment!
Love these tips!! I bought an Aqua Elite 10 round without taking the protective cover off and found that some of the bristles had some stray hairs when I went to use it. I’m hoping the boiling water trick helps save it. Thank you for not editing out the bloopers because I love how cute they are!!!
Thank you, Jenna. :) I was storing my wet brushes with the tips up in my cup - will stop doing that until they are completely dry. Also, I didn't know about trying to form them after washing while they are wet. Thank you for the good tips!!
I use office supply binder clips to hang wet brushes point down. The Masters brush cleaner is great for removing pigment. I have one for watercolor and one for oils. Still have sable brushes from 1960 that are good. At the Art Students League we used Ivory soap, but the brush cleaner is way better. Thanks for a good video !
Thank you, most helpful. Best comments for me was what happens to the ferrule from the water. Makes good sense but not the kind of thing anyone would just guess or naturally do. Softening the glue and loosening the bristles if stored up or down and still wet. I'm sure corrosion could also form inside the handle/ferrule connection.
Thank you. The information is so practical and I am always encouraged when you gracefully handle words that come out wrong. It's great to be showing the world that perfection is not necessary to be successful. You're such a lovely human being!
Thanks for sharing, demonstrating, and reinforcing these important tips for keeping our brushes in tip top condition or close to it. Gosh, I tossed those plastic covers, but I do have a brush holder thingy. The best tip for me was to make sure that my brushes are dry before I stick them in a cup! Thank you, again!
I also forgot to take plastic covers from shop while purchasing brushes and when I travels with my brushes my 12 no. Round brush got bend. Please suggest something for this..
Guilty as charged! I’ve been a long time brush abuser, mostly with my acrylic brushes. I’m new to learning watercolor, and have been more careful with them, but you taught me some new tips. Thanks!
It was super nice! I had to think for a while “why cant you talk today?!” 😂 Please keep posting, i love the calmness while learning compared to this high energetic, extremely shouting people while trying to teach something. Real content! Congrats 🥰
Hi Jenna....I just discovered your youtube videos and SO appreciate your genuineness and all your awesome instructions. I immediately ordered your Everyday Watercolor book and am on day 2 of my 30 days journey. I am also using your videos along with the book. I have done oil painting in the past and don't love how LONG it takes. I love the looseness and overall feel of watercolor ...plus it is a whole lot faster to complete a project. :). You are so approachable and thorough in how you share your info and it is just what I need. THANK YOU.
Thanks for sharing, Dianne! I’m glad you found my channel and I do appreciate your viewership and support. I hope my tutorials continue to help you in your watercolor journey! 💕
I appreciated the tip about having them laying down horizontally after you wash them, also forming the tip to proper shape! Then after they are dried you can put them back into the pretty jar!😊
I saw someone who suggested you leave them to dry on a slope after shaping the tip, a small folder with a paper towel on top is the perfect angle, mine look cute, all lined up together brush down on the slope then when dry they can go in the pot.
Hey, greetings from Berlin/Germany. I just tried your advice with the boiling water on some brushes I inherited from my mother and even though there were lots of hair sticking out, they are now good as new. Thanks a million (I was so close to clip these of...🙈)
after rinsing my brush at the sink, I dry them upside down using fridge magnets. The kind with the clamp. I stick them to the fridge upside down. the clamps are big enough that the brush hairs do not touch anything and can dry in the proper shape. When I was in college, many people stored their brushes for travel in a bamboo mat, like the kind uses to roll sushi. roll them up and rubber band shut or use a pretty ribbon.
Waiting for brushes to dry before storing them upright, + brushing color off on paper towel before rinsing were ones I didn't know. Thanks for the tips and good, thorough explanations.
Very helpful, Jenna! I was storing my wet brushes in a jar (hair side up, of course!), but will now lay them flat on my desk to dry before consigning them to the jar. Other than that, I think I was doing ok. Thanks!
I love Your video, You become so alive when You don't have a roboy woice and perfect words and not as charming . The best tips was the one for a little damaged brush. The ither I knew already. I use the soap once a year and giving them mu love and care, afterwards they are as good as "new".
Love all these tips! Thanks for sharing! Going to try the boiling water tip today! Just got a NEW Princeton velvet brush in the mail and someone must have put the cover on wrong and jammed bristles down!! Ugh!! It’s got several fraying out… maybe I can save it! 🤞 🤷🏼♀️
I was freaking out when you said wash your brush every time when you're done, until I saw how you do it, because that's what I do. I thought you meant with some sort of soap 🙂 Very good video thank you 👍
I LOVED what you showed just before this (for me) and you were asking for.advice on the paint and ceiling. I knew I came "late into the game" but it came pouring out of me! Am so impressed! And the plants. Wonderful. I know things will change around a bit as time goes on but it all looks great. Still, there might be something in what I wrote before-regarding two or three-well maybe 4-5 different things that you can actually SEE, at the place and episode I mentioned. Many Congratulations! Thanks for sharing all that you share! Enjoy! Best, TS. (Jenna's Mom)
I learned somewhere (and I am sorry I can't remember who or where) but they recommended making several figure 8's in the water with your brush when you are cleaning paint off during painting. It works so well to get your brush clean of the old paint, before dipping into a new colour!
The hot water really helps! I picked up an order from Michael’s and a couple of the brush hairs were bent out and I dipped it in hot water and it was good as new.
Will try the boiling water trick on my favorite liner 10/0 Princeton velvet touch brush. It’s frayed for some strange reason because I do all the things you describe in this video in caring for all my brushes. Blessings to you Jenna.
I am a beginner and I want to be sure I take care of my brushes from the start. I had picked up most of that info along the way … but the boiling tip was new as was the reshaping of the brush before letting it dry. Thanks Jenna and crew!
Excellent suggestions , thank you. You make good sense. 👍 This has been a most welcome tutorial. I love my brushes likeable of my art supplies they are precious to me. Gotta treat them right. 😋
Awesome video full of quality content. Really glad that this was the first video I saw for painting after staying months away from it. I really loved how things were explained in details. Video not only covered the minute details which we would neglect most of the time but gave really good explanation on how things can make a huge difference in long run. Cherry on the cake for me was tip on how we can save our damaged brushes cause I usually replace them when they get damaged. Loved the video. Keep up the good work Jenna and John :D
Many, many thanks for your wonderful videos! I'm a beginner at watercolour so I need all the help I can get! My favourite tip in this video was about not storing brushes standing up in a cup. I didn't think about the way it could damage the brush. Awesome tips, Jenna. :)
Great video content Jenna! On occasion, when I've not had the plastic protector piece for my brush when travelling, I've used a chopstick & elastic band to attach brush, sparing the brush end, wrapped in a piece of paper towel and ready to go! When you don't have a proper case, it works great. Brushes can be pricey so we want to take care of them; thanks for your practical words to the wise. 💕Happy Valentine's!
it was very helpfull. I was doing all the wrong things before watching this video. I even managed to save old brushes( that my daughter used years ago) by dipping them in boiling water. Thanks
Oh! Many years as a makeup enthusiast meant I knew about how to clean and store them (or rather, how not to clean and store them) - but the tip about forming them back into their pristine condition after each use was new! Also, the boiling water tip! I will keep this in mind!
Thanks! This is really good info that many teachers do not mention and just take for granted everyone must know. I'm new to watercolor and find I've been storing my brushes upright while wet. Oops!!
This is a really great video. I was so glad nothing you said contradicted what I do with my brushes! Also, glad I discovered your channel! Hope you and yours are happy and healthy!
Tks Jenna Watercolor is new for me, your videos made me wanted to try ! My mistake : storing them vertically in the nice pot on my desk, now I know that they have to be dry before.
Excellent video...thank you so much for the tips and reminders! You have a new fan and subscriber! Only thing I would add is the use of “The Master’s” Brush Cleaner and Preservative soap. It does amazing things for brushes you would assume are “clean”. Or for older brushes, even ones used for oil paints that have been stained many years. Just amazing! You actually keep just a bit on the brush, shape it and allow it to dry. Then just rinse before using. Helps condition the brush and keep it’s shape in storage. Anyway, just my two cents to add to your wonderful, helpful information...thanks again!
I find swirling the brush in a figure 8 several times does a good job of extricating the paint from the brush, I never smash the hairs on the bottom of my glass while I’m cleaning it.
Thanks Jenna, I always store them horizontally but I tend to put the plastic covers back on to protect them (as I share the dining room table, AKA hobby table (as we've not been able to have anyone over for dinner for aaaaages of course!), with a brute of a husband who has RC cars as a hobby... I will now just dry them without covers... x
Even better; husband has a 3D-printer so we're going to design and print a brush holder for my 3 sizes and stick it to the inside of my paint tin (inherited from my mother) so they can be stored safely and horizontally! Such fun (if you don't know already; watch Miranda Jenna, reckon she's right up your sense of humour street)!
Thanks for these helpful tips, Jenna! I use the same brushes and paper as you do and am saving up for some professional paints and palette. (I'm using student grade paints for now as I learn and explore.) Your tip on reshaping the brush hairs was particularly insightful as I haven't been doing that. Thank you for all your tips and tutorials. I always learn so much from you!
Thank you Jenna, for super helpful tips!! I just started watercolor painting a month ago, and I have found your YT-channel to be a well of information and inspiration❤. Also thank you for reminding us it takes practice to become skilled. You just make it look so easy...😉
Thanks for all your wonderful Tips regarding Art Material. When I've gone into an Art Shop, the better quality ones have plastic covers on them so you're not able to check out the brush until your home and clean off the substance and I found after several uses hairs started to come out. Of course, the store refused to exchange it, so how can one have a look at it before leaving the store. The brush was a high-end brush and was surprised, perhaps I got a one-off brush. Otherwise, I certainly take care of them.
This is my first attempt at watercolors and appreciate your assistance. I would expect only needing a mild dish soap for cleaning if I wait too long and the paint starts to dry on the brush.
This may be silly but, does the water one uses to paint with and care for your brushes make a difference? I live in a rural area and my well at times can be rusty and has a high mineral content, it is safe to drink, cook & wash with but could it affect the balance or chemical composition of my paints? You can tell I am a beginner. I love your video your voice is pleasant and your teaching style is most enjoyable. Thanks
So….yeah….I’m guilty of the “Don’t” leave your brush in the water too long. I’m also heavy handed, so I’ve frayed my fair share of brushes…lol. In my efforts to save them, I learned a neat trick(after the boiling tip), and that is to dip the brush into liquid starch (the stuff you would use for ironing/ or making slime concoctions). It will hold the filaments in place as it is drying, which will hopefully return to original state. I’ve been able to save some, & some were not as fortunate. Just something to try…🌺 Thank you for all of your lovely videos, they’ve helped me bunches! 💐
Hey my awesome friend (can I say that? LOL ) thank you SO much for all the incredible tips! I’ve been power-watching your videos so, forgive me for commenting on things that may not be recent. In this case, I was pretty much doing everything right but I appreciated the tip about re-shaping the brush. I occasionally use this soap brush cleaner thing-y but you’ve convinced me I don’t really need it. I’m in LOVE with my Princeton Heritage 4050 brushes and the only one I need to acquire is the no. 16, which seems HUGE to me BTW, the largest size I own is a 12 Silver BV. I can’t thank you enough for what you do! You are TOO much fun to be this great LOL ❤️ from Canada.
I really liked these maintenance tips I do them all thankfully. I was also hoping for some tips to make them last while using them? How to prevent fraying the tips and that kind of things when dipping in the paints or brushing in the paper etc if there are any tips like that. When I started watercolors, the youtubers I watched would swirl their brushes into de paint pans so, I started doing the same and now I think that is too rough and I wear them down too quickly
Hugely helpful! I have been having trouble with stray and shedding brush hairs and it is very frustrating--have not been careful about keeping the ferrule from being submerged. Thank you!!
Thank You! This is so helpful I've got my MaimeriBlu Paints. Ordering the paint brushes you recommend today and wanted to learn how to take care of them. I've only used Hobby Lobby's paint brushes. It's time for a upgrade! Also looked for the pallet you use...OH My goodness the Silvan clay works. To expensive for me. Maybe when or even if I get as good as you are then maybe I'll be able to afford. LOL!
Tq for your explanation on how to care our paint brushes, could you show how to reshape those long synthetic brush tip which is crooked...? Tq Rainey! ❤️
You do all that I do.. I also do the figure 8 movement in the water to clean my brush vs. hitting the bottom of the glass. I thought there was a brush conditioner you can use to fix the hairs? Never tried so don't know. Thanks for the video.
After washing I lightly pass the brush over a bar of brush soap then reform the shape before allowing to dry horizontally. Do you have any qualms about this method?
I think I compromised my size 16 heritage, I use one of those mesh things in the bottom to clean the brushes. I've been way too harsh. Now I know, thank you.
So helpful, very similar to taking care of good makeup brushes! I'm wondering if there's ever a time you would suggest using soap. Also, I've seen people use hair gel on natural brushes to keep the shape. Do you have any thoughts on that.
I got dried pigment on my brush too.. Thankfully it came off after cleaning it with let's call it "the brush soap" but I noticed it the next morning. Sometimes it's possible to safe brushes with some and synthetics with boiling water if nothing is working. The boiling water method is something I avoid for the most part.
@@JennaRaineyChannel I tried it once but I'm really concerned using it with good brushes. I guess it will damage the part were the bristles are glued after some time. I used a brush soap that I bought specifically for my brushes. Just to clean my mixed hair brushes with. Staining pigments can stay in natural hair brushes and it's good to wash them really well. It's not necessary with synthetic brushes but when I clean my "good brushes" with soap I sometimes clean all the brushes that I have too.
Your lesson is so helpful! I am guity of letting my brushes dry in the jar.*shame* I am hoping your lesson today will help me. I was sick last fall and my spouse had to call an ambulance. When I got home a week later, realized that the EMTs had knocked off a jar of brushes and the tips had been forced against the wall. 14 brushes became deformed. I am going to try your renewal technique!!
Let me know what was helpful for you! And if you dare, haha, spill the beans - anyone do any of those Dont’s?!
Excellent advice laying them flat while drying tend to place the brushes upright and the tending to the quality thanks Jenna !
Hi, I was doing all the dont’s, so thanks so much Jenna, video has helped a lot xx
I am glad I wasn’t doing the “don’ts”but I didn’t know I should reshape them before they dry! :)
I know this is an older video but I want to say that I love your videos. You are a very good teacher! I was a

The tip on possibly repairing the brush form using boiling water was interesting. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!
I love how real you are. Thank you for not editing out your verbal whoops'. I appreciate it!
I like to keep it fun and casual! 🤗 Thanks for the encouragement, Katherine! ❤️❤️
Me too!
me too!!! 🥰
I agree! I love that you are not Pinterest Perfect. You show us that you are human 😅
I don't think this affects them adversely, but I normally rinse mine under the faucet and then press the hairs between a paper towel. I'll have to try the finger tip shaping you demonstrated. Thanks for a good video!

Aw, you're so kind, thank you Sue! Glad you enjoyed the video! ❤️
I just came across this video and I thank you for the information. Also, you must be a happy lady, your ability to chuckle at yourself is endearing.
WowZer! Game changer. Thank you! Just started watercolours a couple months ago. This is exactly what I needed to hear. ❤
Jenna, your advice about caring for your brushes was very helpful. I never was was shown these tips before. Thanks so much!

The Masters brush cleaner is great for removing pigment. I have one for watercolor and one for oils.
Still have sable brushes from 1960 that are good.

I will now just dry them without covers... x
Ya you’ll wanna be careful to not get that mold that will ruin your brushes. Better to play it safe! ❤️
@@JennaRaineyChannel Ok, ok, I've gone back down, undressed them, re-cleaned them and they're openly drying on a paper towel now. Thanks!
So glad this was helpful, Susan!
I was doing all the wrong things! Very helpful and informative!
Glad this was helpful, Patricia!
I learned a lot from your videos and your book, thank you! 🙂
Now you know! 🤗 Your brushes will thank you for watching this video.
You are so funny Jenna with your woops Thank you for your Tips Carol
Haha, glad you enjoyed! Thanks Carol!
Also, I love those brush roll ups for storing my brushes!
Thanks for this great video! Your work is fabulous!
So informative, great presentation and passion ❤
hhhmm very interesting the tip of submerge it on boiling water....I think I´m gonna try with one that has some frayed hairs; thanks so much Jenna!.
I hope you find some success with the boiling water!
@@JennaRaineyChannel thanks so much for this tip! :)
I appreciate your effort to find the "correct" words, haha. Great tips, thanks!
This advice is Exactly what I was looking for😎
Hey my awesome friend (can I say that?
You may certainly say 'awesome friend' I welcome that with open arms, friend! ❤️ So glad you're loving the videos, thanks so much for sharing, Didi!
Thanks you and ngl this saved me from my project painting..
New to water color all of it was very helpful!!
LOL!
I know they’re expensive, but they’re something I plan on passing down to my son one day so they’re like little treasures to me!
Tq for your explanation on how to care our paint brushes, could you show how to reshape those long synthetic brush tip which is crooked...? Tq Rainey! ❤️
Thank you, lots of great ideas!
Thank you for great tips.
You’re welcome Rita! ❤️
Oops, was totally drying my brushes upright in my cup... thanks for the great tips!
Super helpful, thank you
You do all that I do.. I also do the figure 8 movement in the water to clean my brush vs. hitting the bottom of the glass. I thought there was a brush conditioner you can use to fix the hairs? Never tried so don't know. Thanks for the video.
Sounds like you take good care of you brushes, Billie!
Can you please make a video on what brushes you use to paint what brushes paint what etc...
Hey Jenna - thanks for all the tips. The one about plunging the brush into boiling water… is that for natural or synthetic hair… or is it ok for both?
Very useful tips. Thank you
Great tips! Thank you so much♥️
So, thanks to your video, I learned today that I’ve been a good brush mom haha 😂 thanks Jenna for the boiling water tip.
Ya Barbara! Way to be a good brush mom! Haha 😂
Better to find out late than never!
So helpful, very similar to taking care of good makeup brushes! I'm wondering if there's ever a time you would suggest using soap. Also, I've seen people use hair gel on natural brushes to keep the shape. Do you have any thoughts on that.
great tips!!!
How about using a brush dryer with a large spring after washing the brushes. the brushes are held suspended with the tip down while drying. Ok to use?
I got dried pigment on my brush too.. Thankfully it came off after cleaning it with let's call it "the brush soap" but I noticed it the next morning.
Sometimes it's possible to safe brushes with some and synthetics with boiling water if nothing is working. The boiling water method is something I avoid for the most part.
I hear ya, Christine. I don’t use the boiling method much either, but if someone is desperate, it’s worth a shot!
Was very helpful 💜💜
Great! I’m glad it was helpful for you!
