yes i ADORE these...... i have the 8 and 10 but need a 6 asap!
I use natural hair brushes. DaVinci squirrel mops in size 0, 1, and 4, and Rhapsody Kolinsky sizes 0 through 10 rounds. I also use Silver Black Velvet brushes size 2 through 12 rounds. All my synthetics hook on the tip eventually so I’ve slowly built up the collection I have now. All these brushes should last a lifetime if well cared for..
I noticed your brushes also have the dreaded ‘hook’ or curl on the tip. It probably doesn’t make such a big difference in the painting process but it drives me absolutely INSANE. OCD much? Lol.
I like Winsor and Newton Cotman brushes, but now I know these are synthetic I might give them a go. 😊
I am stuck on these brushes too and I have every size. The ones I use the most is 12, 6 and 4. They were the 1st watercolor brushes I got back in 2008 when I 1st started painting in watercolor. I have many other brands too including the highest quality Kolinsky sables. But these are my workhorse brushes. Another brush I"m loving is the new Princeton Elite.
I do like and use the same brushes, but also like the Princeton snap brushes.
Take a bow, Jenna. For all my life, I've tended to look to artists for heightened awareness and fresh seeing, so I especially loved your saying "They (your brushes) are synthetic sable hair so no harm done to animals, and I'm so on board with everything that Princeton does in terms of being more ethical and saving all the animal baby lives because it's a big deal." It really IS a big deal. Thank you.
Well I am so glad that's appreciated, thanks so much for sharing and caring Mary! xoxo
Give me real sable any day! But i'm a miniature painter so real sable detail brushes are better for longevity and holding their point... holding more paint etc etc
I just got my first Princeton Heritage (16) and I simply adore it! Thanksfor reccomending!
Those are my absolute fav brushes too. As a beginner I bought several different kinds of brushes and I quickly fell in love with the Princeton 4050 line! They are perfect, not stiff and not too soft, not expensive, they hold their point well and hold a good amount of water AND the handles are thicker, easier to use!
I checked out the brushes and was surprised by the price. The size 2 and 6 was less than $9 each. That does sound like a reasonable price for an excellent brush. Thank you for letting us know.
Thanks for the price info. It helps to compare
I LOVE the Princeton Brushes! I have mostly the Velvetouch brushes, but I have a couple of the Heritage as well. My sizes go in the exact opposite direction as you, the largest being 6, down to a 3/0. I know some people don't like that they don't hold water as well as a non-synthetic brush, but I really like the amount of water these hold. I find them easy to control, and the snappiness they have is perfect!
Thanks for sharing, Amanda! Glad you found and have some brushes that suit you! Happy painting and thanks for watching!
I just got mine!!! I am a newbie and have been struggling for 8 months. I finally figured out my other brushes were awful. I am excited to use these1
I like escoda versatil travel brushes. Princeton Velvetouch and neptune, and LOVE my Silver Brushes. I hated them at first but love the way they work now.
Thanks for sharing, Malisa! SO important to have supplies you love!
I just got my first heritage brush and I am in LOVE. I can't wait to get another one.
Yes! Princeton Heritage and Elite are my go to brushes. I have rounds in 4, 6, 8, 10. They are all I need to paint just about everything. Good videos! You are just so funny! Love to watch you work.
YES! You're all set with a great line up of brushes! I'm so glad you're enjoying the videos, thanks Renee!!
Just ordered all three. Thank you for doing this video. I’m new to watercolor
I hope you enjoy your new brushes! Happy painting!
Jenna Rainey oh I’m sure I will I’m sure. I started doing art a year ago and I’m 65. I’d love for you to see what I’ve done. I built a website by watching UA-cam videos BelindaAWest.com and it’s on Instagram belinda_loves_art. I’m going to try watercolors
@@belindawest3558 Just checked out your website, those acrylic pours are SO FUN! Very fun and vibrant colors throughout your work, great stuff Belinda!!
Jenna Rainey thank you so much
You ll LOVE them 👍
I just got my first Princeton Heritage brush. It's a size 12. I love it! Plan to buy more of them.
They're my fave!!
I bought my first Princeton Heritage brush no. 6 based on your recommendation! It’s really expensive here in the Philippines though. Some say here that it’s under $9 but here it is twice that. So I will keep on saving and reward myself as I progress with painting. Thank you!
Princeton...most underrated brush ..I have brushes from over $100+ to the brushes I have for great grandbabies to play with...just tried Princeton on a fluke...and was pleasently surprised. So I bought a few more and each brush was a hit...as far as their fakes are concerned they are as good if not better than the Spanish brushes I have that everyone on you tube is crazy about.
Yes 👍🏻 the size 6 is all I need. So nice to use and also no moths will destroy it (like Kolinsky sable) Great price and value.
Wait, do you have to store them a certain way to avoid moths EATING them??!?
I love the Princeton Lauren Golden Synthetic brushes!
All experienced watercolor artists, rave about cheap synthetic brushes and almost none, uses very expensive natural hair ones. I'm new on watercolors so I'm searching allover the internet, to find out what supplies to get.
My little experience with brushes, is that Da Vinci inexpensive NOVA series of round brushes, are probably the best bet for a beginner and please correct me if I'm wrong. Daler Rowney aren't bad, but they don't come close, to the quality I got from Da Vinci. That's where my little experience ends. As for colors, I wish I could get straight from the beginning some Daniels Smiths, but I couldn't find any of these here in Greece. I guess I have to search more. Van Goghs don't look bad for now though! I would really appreciate any advice on watercolor supplies, Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year!!
My no.16 Princeton Heritage just arrived this morning and I love it! I have the full set of Winsor & Newton Series 7 Sable brushes a gift I received years ago (yes very expensive - and made from animal hair which is totally against my principles ) they are fabulous brushes but I am now looking for synthetics and have tried many to great disappointment. However; already I am loving this Princeton Heritage and have ordered my size 6. 😉
They take a whole month to arrive, but if something is worth waiting for… 🖌 So thank you for the encouragement. Happy Painting Friend 🎨
Hullo Jenna, It is so go to see your still using your brushes and happy with them and that they are holding up! I remember when synthetic brushes were horrible! I picked up a few of these brushes and I prefer the Aqua Elite brushes, they feel more like the Kolinsky brushes I wanted to use when I first started painting and my Gran used them and told me that I would have to grow into using the Kolinsky brushes! I have used squirrel hair brushes and back when they were the “solution” to the much lauded Kolinsky brushes and so much cheaper! Now I no longer buy natural hair watercolor brushes, I still have a few brushes that I got from my Gran, I even use them for special projects. Thank you for sharing your preferences and being generous with your time and techniques.
Thank you so much for all the education you provide to beginnerd and maybe to some seasoned ones.😊
HI, nice video! I'm new to watercolor and am experimenting with some different brushes. My first brush was a Heritage 4050 No. 12 round, and several brushes later, it is still far and away the one I like best, mainly because of the spring and feel. I was wondering why I haven't seen a lot of watercolor artists talk about these, so it was nice to see my preference confirmed. :-)
I LOVE 'em!! Glad you do too!
Favorite brushes. I asked for some Winsor Newton Series 7 for Christmas. The 4050’s suit me better.
I bought ur book it’s great and started doing the exercise great book keeps me focused 😊
Thanks for your support, so glad you’re loving it! 💕
Thank you for a great video! I have been searching for those perfect brushes....I am going to get these! I'm so glad they are synthetic!
Yay! Glad this helps!
I so like those 4050 series and the snap brushes.
They're my favorite!!
Hello @Billie Anderson, could you tell me whats the different between 4050 series and the snap brush based on your experience?
I use Dream Catchers brushes. I like them but am willing to try whatever you recommend. I believe you need to do that in order to feel the difference. Going to get them. WooHoo.!!
Just ordered the three you recommended. Thank for the video.
Enjoy! 💕
I will. Thanks
Thank you for the recommendation! I ordered a size 6 :)
I will definitely check out these brushes.
If you get them, I hope you love them as much as I do!!
I have been wanting to level up from beginner brushes, but still affordable. But, as you said...there are SO many options my old lady brain is about to explode! So I end up feeling anxious and not getting anything. :/ princeton is definitely where I'll be getting one from at this point....but I've tried to watch videos from artists i really enjoy, but, as you said, each has their favorite. If I have the money I'd buy a heritage, neptune, snap and elite...but I don't. And finding it difficult to decipher which one would suit my best :/ but, you make this one sound pretty great, so in my wishlist it goes.
I look forward to watching more of your work and excited to subscribe :)
Thanks for all your hard work!!
Funny. When you said you painted your office desk and whatever, I imagined you painting the walls of your office with a #16 Princeton Heritage 4050 brush. LOL
Yes! I finally have them!! Round 2 and 6. And they are really really great. So soft! Of course I could not find them in Lithuania and I could not find them in amazon uk but then you want something really badly you find the way to be shipped it from other side of the ocean. I regret I did not order round 10 or 12.
I'm SO glad you got them and love them! I know they will treat you well and for a long time! Happy painting!!
Jenna, thank you for everything you already teached me and us (which is the same as yall know) and everything youre going to in the future!!
I love your face amd watching you talk, besides watching you paint and painting along with you.
What i actially wanted to ask: anyone know an euro onlineshop where i can get princetons? I can order from the big A, but i feel its way more expensive there plus id rather support someones shop. ❤️
Hi..the two camera angle was a nice'eeee,it felt good on my brain, ha..
I love Princeton brushes, but I am finding more ease and control with "Silver Brush" paint brushes.
Whatever works best for you! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@JennaRaineyChannel I use both brushes...love them both.
Haven't been able to find this exact princeton heritage brush in South Africa. Their snap brush is the closest i could find
Bummer! I know some people in different countries have a tough time getting all the same supplies, but it sounds like you got yourself a good brush that will work just fine! :)
Thank you so much, Jenna. Blick had the answer.
Awesome!
Question: Can these brushes (Heritage Brushes) be used with other media... acrylic, oil, and watercolors? Or only watercolors. I am learning to paint to finish pictures that my Mother started prior to her death. she painted with mainly with oils. Thank you for your answer
Is there a difference between the Princeton heritage brushes and the Princeton Neptune brushes? Love ya, Jenna!
I had to jump off the synthetic brush bandwagon, unfortunately. Every single synthetic-mimicking-kolinsky/squirrel brush I’ve bought, cheap to high end, has formed a curl or hook at the tip. No, I don’t leave my brushes in my water jar. No, I don’t scrub out paint from tiny pans, I have a dedicated cheapo brush for that and I prefer wells instead of pans. I take extremely good care of my brushes because they are an investment. It’s heartbreaking when my $20 synthetic round develops a hook on the tip. Same goes for the cheapies. I only buy natural hair brushes now because I was throwing money in the bin buying synthetics that cannot keep a sharp point.
Thanks for your feedback, Christina! I'm sorry to hear you've had such a disappointing run with synthetic brushes. Have you tried Princeton synthetic? It sounds like you may be over trying, haha, but mine keep their shape after giving them a good rinse after I'm done painting... At any rate, I do hope you have a brush you're happy with and you enjoy your painting! Take care and thanks for watching! xoxo
Jenna Rainey I have not tried the Princeton brushes you use and recommend but I am kinda over trying. I did try the boiling water trick after watching your video though. I have to say it helped quite a bit relaxing the curl at the tip (I call them hooks.) Not 100%, but definitely better. Still, the next time I'm in the market for a new brush, I'm going to invest my money in kolinsky. I do have a few Princeton Snap brushes that I use all the time when I need the extra firmness and snap. Oddly enough, THOSE don't have hooks 🤔 maybe because I use them a lot? I don't know. Maybe because they aren't trying to mimick natural hair? They're white taklon and proud of it, lol.
Christina Todd .
Yes, Beryl Rose?
Wow. I bought my Princeton brushes back in March of 2008 so are obviously very old . None of mine did that at all. That being said, not all synthetic brushes are created equal. Some are ultra cheap and worthless.
Do you ever need to replace your brushes? If yes, how often? Thanks!
Not regularly at all, actually. I use the same brushes I've been using for a while. Just wash them with water when I am done and make sure they're taken care of and they really last a long time!
Do you know how do they compare to the velvetouch series?
Yes I have tried ,,, but I like more Neptune & Aqua series
I live in London and I am super struggling to find these brushes anywhere... even trying to buy in the US and get them shipped over. What retailer do you use or where do you usually buy? If they do carry the correct brushes everything seems to be out of stock. (Maybe because of your youtube channel! ha!)
sugarandroxy - 'Cheap Joe's Art Stuff' (USA) do international shipping and have the magic sizes (2, 6, 16) in stock, cost about $30, the snag is FedEx transport will cost another $30 (+ don't know if paint brushes incur an import tax?) So get's pricey.... Ms Rainey does also recommend (just about..:-) ) the Princeton Aqua Elite range and these are usually stocked by Jackson's Art Supplies (UK) with whom you're probably familiar.... Currently on back order, combined cost (assuming the same sizes recommended) about £25.00. It's odd that the 4050 range is so scarce, Amazon UK has a small selection but not the right numbers duh!
@UCodiPBMp-DfI6nzugjXrJMg - see note above.
Have you tried Grumbacher Goldenedge Watercolor Brushes?
I am desperately trying to get my wife some of the Princeton 4050 brushes you recommend as a gift but there seems to be supply problems in the UK, and apparently due to Covid, in the US as well. Can you recommend any other brushes either by the same brand or others? Many thanks
I’d be very interested to hear if you have any other recommendations too, can’t seem to find the Princeton 4050 in Sweden. 🙏
I love your videos! Thank you! but I'm having a hard time finding the "description below" to click on links in this one and some others. What's the secret?
There’s a tiny arrow on the right just under the video that you have to click for the description to pop up!
Cool 😎
🤗🤗
What paper are you using or recommend?
I have a video for each supply that I use, so be sure to check it out, but it’s Legion Stonehenge. Also, my supplies are linked in the vid description, so that will take you directly to what I use! Hope that helps!
What about Princeton valvet touch? I have both aqua one n this one is better?
Are these still your favorite brushes 4 years later?
I wanted to buy these but unfortunately it says there's no seller of Amazon for these brushes herein India! So disappointed!!
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear that. :( hopefully that changes sometime so you can get access to these brushes.
Sorry about that...I can’t get them on amazon from Australia either...I used an online company like Jackson’s art or blick (can’t remember which one) and got them that way...they re worth it if you can find them 😘
I've just been having a look at the brushes on their website - maybe if you email Princeton they can give you details of a supplier in India? 😊
I think there are sellers on Amazon for this brush!! Just checked
You can actually order them from the USA online art store called Dick Blick. But the cost of shipping will be more.
I wonder how this compares to the Escoda Elite? Does it have more snap?
I have had no success purchasing the round Princeton heritage 4050 series brushes.
I am in Australia. Help.
Did you check Blick? I believe they ship internationally!
How do they compare to the Princeton Neptune?
Hey Heather! 4050's are more flexible, snappy, and they hold more water. :)
@@JennaRaineyChannel Oh wish I had known. Something for the next watercolour splurge. :) Thank you
Do somebody know where i can get those brushes in Germany? Or online? Otherwise The shipping is like 20$ to germany😩😫
(I hope someone can help and you can find some brushes you love, I'm unsure... 😐)
Hi Sarah! Did you finally found them? Where did you find them online? I am from Belgium but I am not able to find it anywhere :(
I have those brushes but they don’t seem to have a good point like yours.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
👍
Is there any pain brushes you like from Joanna's. I'm really hoping to find something for that I can "pick up" since everyone is buying from Amazon it will take more time and I'm hoping be able to get some new brushes this weekend.
These brushes are out of stock everywhere :(
