A great place to learn how to make paella as well. However, there are things you will love and there are things you may not like. So here are our best and worst parts of visiting Valencia, Spain

I spent a year living in Valencia and it is an absolutely incredible city! I cannot recommend it highly enough. I never ran out of things to do, and it was so nice to see so many places that I remember from my time there. As someone who has been all over Spain, nowhere beats Valencia for paella, horchata, orange juice, or Agua de Valencia! As a young person who lived in Valencia, I also have to agree with Mark that the nightlife is pretty great. It's simply incredible and I'm so glad that the Wolters made their way there!
I remember when I was there a huge outdoor concert on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento with hundreds of students.
I am a native Valencian and though I mostly agree about the things you said, I would recommend you visit the smaller towns around Valencia to get a more local feel. Recently I have seen a TON of english speaking foreigners either visiting or living here for a bit, so it is becoming a sort of international melting pot. Which is definetly nice, but most of the 'typical valencian' stuff you see in the city are touristy traps. Try out smaller towns like El Saler, Xàtiva, Sueca, etc, to get to actually see local culture.
I don't remember any bad smell and the "siesta" as he says happens in all Spain, Italy etc. It's simply a break in the middle of the day and as compensation shops are open until a lot later. In UK all closes at 17:00 except big stores.
@@karlpj1 I don't know where you stayed in Italy, but in the northern part they don't have any kind of siesta at all :)
@@mantra536 what I mean they close for eating. Many people don't take any siesta but in many areas of south europe shops close in the middle of the day temporally. If the people choose to take a siesta or not is secondary (most never do).
My point, the pause is not for siesta, is for eating. By shops I mean small and traditional shops.
@@karlpj1 I like that the Siesta keeps the stores/restaurants open late. I pretty much dont get out of the house before 1PM. lol

Was deciding where to go in Spain, sounds like Valencia is the place to go over Barcelona and Madrid. Needing some sunshine, warmth, and beaches after a cold winter in Poland
Valencia is nice but quite small. Barcelona is super beautiful and offers lots to do. You might consider also Malaga and its surroundings. :)
Have been studying for 6 months there. Love Valencia really great city definitely when there is a litte sun. But Madrid also a must visit in my opinion. Valencia is small but lovely. Rent a bike for sure eat some tapas.

If anyone goes to Barcelona or Madrid..BEWARE OF PICK POCKETS AND PETTY THIEVES. In the last 10 years it has gotten somewhat out of control. Also it is very expensive. Truthfully..Skip those cities.

Its Spain. Doesnt matter where in spain its one of my favorite places to be.
We purchased a flat in Valencia 3 years ago! The city has so much to offer and you hit it all….climate, affordability, beach, fantastic cuisine/restaurant scene, authenticity…still feels like authentic old Spain, not as touristic as Barcelona or Madrid. Regarding the homeless in the Turia park…it seems as though there was a high increase right after Covid started. Maybe more people struggling with surviving financially during this crisis. Planning to return for Fallas!
Neither Madrid nor Barcelona are touristic if you go to a normal neighborhood.
@@kathrinscharrer3923 true but unless you keep yourself isolated in the more residential neighborhoods you are always going to run into the hoards of tourists, particularly in Barcelona. That has been my experience. However even when you are in the more touristic areas of Valencia it still feels like you are surrounded by more locals than in Madrid or Barcelona. It’s a smaller city so one would naturally expect that.

@@kathrinscharrer3923 I live in Barcelona and there are so many tourists year round, that it's an effort to go somewhere where there aren't tourists, no exaggeration
@@contaalt4742 Ok. In Madrid it is not as bad yet. The most important thing is getting rid of this tourist flat renting. Tourists should stay in hotels or hostels, period. Flats should be rented for minimum 6 months. That way locals can live there and neighborhoods do not turn into film sets.
I am German, but I am not a tourist. I have been living in Madrid since 1987. In Madrid, if you live in Hortaleza or Barrio del Pilar there isn't a single tourist ( yet). If you work where office spaces are, there are also no tourists apart from the ones that visit the football stadium. I never go downtown because I look quite German and I do not fancy being treated like a tourist in my own city.
My husband and I just signed a lease for an apartment in Valéncia yesterday! So excited for our next chapter there. Having never actually been, this video was helpful! 🤣

We fell in love with this city back in 2019, now we are taking the kids there in October and then getting our visas to move there next year. We have been all over and this is by far our most favorite city.

Been there 3 times for Las Fallas. Best street party ever. And for your US audience, temps in Fahrenheit as well as Celsius might be helpful.
I will definitely include this place in my bucket list. I love love Spain! So far I visited Seville, Jerez, and Cadiz.

I love Spanish City Breaks. `Been to Valencia a couple of times, during the Festival of Las Fallas. It`s a riot ! The daytime pyrotechnic display in the city square, well - I`m surprised we can`t hear it here in the north of England. It`s completely mad.
Let's get something clear. If we close the shops between 2 pm to 5 pm is not because we are having a siesta, is because people work from 9.30 am to 8.30 pm and they deserve some time to have a break, cook for their children and eat.
so why not just have shops open from 9 to 5 like in the uk.
@@rupert-j8fwhat shops in the UK are you going to that shut at 5? Most shops shut at 7/8 nowadays. They just hire people in shifts so not any one person is working all day. Take note Spain!
It’s everything closing down on Sundays that’s the most nonsensical. One of the 2 days off most people have is a ghost town.
I studied abroad in Spain in college very close to Valencia, and enjoyed many weekends in this lovely city. Thanks for sharing! Just realized how much I’ve missed it.
Love Valencia. We went a couple years ago and fell in love with the city and its people. We can't wait to go back.
Valencia was one of the few places I've visited where you could gladly move there. Feels very safe and family friendly, lots to do, the park is awesome. Never noticed the problems in the park at night when we went, but we went pre COVID
Thanks for this awesome video. We moved to Valencia almost four years ago and still love it. It's a great city for all ages and has become a melting pot. The cost of living is great too.

That is my city and I'm so proud of it. Now I'm living in Madrid for work and I miss it very much.
PD. 'siesta' is a break we take AFTER lunch and only if you are not working so mostly on weekends. We eat later than the rest of the world (around 13.3-15 h and 21-22h) and that has nothing to do to the siesta, it is our way of living. If at 12h there is nothing open is simply because no one in Spain will eat at that time ;)

But they actually are open, for the almuerzo, I live in Sagunto but I spend a lot of time in the city so I don't get why he says it is closed, they probably just told him it's not lunch time yet and he thought it was closed...🤔
Argentina also have the same timetable for lunch and dinner. It's even later than that on weeekends and in the countriside there is also siesta. We learn it from our grandparents (mostly from Spain).

@@videau234 al pueblo. Most of the people who live in the city would go on weekends to their village of origin ,as for big holiday it depends some stay in their pueblo and others travel abroad. Most of my friends would go to their hometown or village

Valencia Napoli Street Food. Best Italian food I have EVER had. No I have not been to Italy yet but eat Italian everywhere I go. The guy running it is from Naples. A must eat!!
The bells of the church ( that was San Miguel's cathedral btw)give the hour actually, so for example when they hit in the video they did hit only once, so we know that it was 1:00 pm at the moment where he was recording He mentioned a lot of good food and Agua de Valencia but forgot to mention Café Bombon and el Cremaet, those are typical Valencian kinds of coffee that are great to try,
I remember when I was 17, I asked my mum if I could go Ibiza for my 18th...she said better to go to Valencia...you'll learn culture, language and people...when my friends were talking about Ibiza, getting drunk having fish and chips, I was talking about Valencia, getting drunk, eating tapas, and learned Spanish and Catalan. I didn't regret going to Valencia.
it's not Catalan, it's Valenciano
We don’t speak catalán, we speak valencian and Spanish.
I loved Valencia, I went there in September, absolutely the best time! One correction, the architecture in Old Town is more Art Nouveau (late 1800s) than Art Deco (early 1900s). Additionally, Valencia has awesome street art, some of the best I've ever seen, visit the northern half of the Old Town to see that. Be sure to climb up the cathedral bell tower, incredible views! Yes, drink Agua de Valencia...it's like the mimosa of your dreams. Oh and that park you're standing in was under renovation in September, I'm jealous you saw it 😄

Valencia is very very beautiful
The thing I loved about Valencia is how everyone follows the rules. The thing I hated about Valencia is how everyone followed the rules with Covid a LITTLE too literally. But overall, Valencia is amazing and I recommend this city if you like a place where you can do many things but still have the space to relax and enjoy Spanish lifestyle without worrying about thieves everywhere like in Barcelona. You so rightly describe this city so well. It is all about a love hate relationship as you quite rightly say.
But then again, no city is perfect.
Like the Romans say, if you take the Romans out of Rome it will be a much better place….I’d say the politicians would do well to take a hike before destroying this city.

Great video! I’m going to Spain for two weeks at the end of January and I study Spanish, so I’m looking for some authentic, less touristy but still fun destinations. Everyone is telling me I need to see Barcelona but I’m looking for places more like this.
that was my same approach on a recent trip in Spain.
Barcelona is fine although extremly pricy for what you get as a travelling experience. You can sense the influence of Spanish culture here as well. Only thing is the locals are very very very proud of being Catalanes which is cool but gets a bit annoying since they make soooo much emphasis to make their point even among themselves. Kind of funny in a freaky way. Tourist seem not very appreciated here is my point.
You're the only person whom I've seen mention the smell! It was an... unpleasant surprise when we moved here, hahaha. But now we just call it horse time. We live pretty much in la huerta, though, so it's super strong where we live.

Here in Valencia now, staying for 1 week. It is hot but after the Italian 38-39 degrees July and August, I'm OK with the heat, jugged so ma y Horchata slushies 😁. Must say I like it better than Madrid or Barcelona. Less history and art or museums but Valencia is so spacious! It is so FAMILY FRIENDLY, so many things to do, people are kind and we feel safer than we did in Barcelona. And coz we arrived last few days of August, 80% of the city is still closed and on vacation. And the Mediterranean sunset at Malvarosa, wow! Will definitely come back in November.
I like your video, living in Vlc for over 4 years and I totally recommend this city, for vacations or as a place where to live, it has a lot to offer and as you said, is not as chaotic as Madrid or Barcelona... One thing I noticed is that although we're in January, the video looks like it's not from this year, just because the square you were recording in front of the cathedral is now being reconstructed because it's gonna be a pedestrian zone as the one they made in the city hall square... Though is a small detail, it doesn't change the fact that your video besides being very informative, is quite accurate and I liked that. Hope you visit this beautiful city again!

Hi. I'm from Valencia. Is not really siesta, people close shop during lunch time 2-3 pm to go home an eat. But we don't sleep, that's already a myth. Another thing is during summer, when it is too hot is almost impossible to go out during afternoon, that's why everything is closed. Is more a weather related thing. Thanks for your video! ;)
Right, but the heat is siesta-related whether that means having a nap or just a break is up to the individual.

This is beyond super accurate! Actually surprised me how accurate it is. I would say the biggest one is the heat in the summer. Very accurate and lots of places don’t have AC haha!

I guess you were talking about 'Los Jardines del Turia,' where it is probably uncomfortable to walk after dark. That city was the 'it' place to be on weekends during 'La Ruta del Bacalao.' Apparently, a lot of northern Europeans use to go to Valencia just for that.

Paća de virgin, and studied at cuidad…. Yes to everything you said. Also plaća late night is the best skateboarding spots…. Lots of ridges/smoothness. Best kebab In the city is my guy hakim next to Torres de Serranos. Best oysters at vinostrum not far at plaća mosem sorelle, about a 5 minute block from this video. Tell Luis hello for me

i lived in valencia for several months in 89 it was a great pleace to live. you might want to mention the valencian language it is a dialect of catalan and very differnet. bon dia not bueanas dias . i like how when you go in to a small store or business every one say hello and good by. it may be the third largest city but it is way behind barcelona and madrid. another great place to visit is alicante

Valencia is such an amazing place. I loved the food, the people and eating oranges that just kept randomly dropping from street trees 😄.
I was there in January and people were using coats at 22C. Coming from a -40C Canadian winter it was summer for me. I got intrigued Valencians pointing out my T-shirt and shorts, like I was crazy or something 😄
those oranges are not normal oranges that you find in the supermarkets, they are decorative! they are altered in a lab and then planted so they don't fall so easily like normal oranges, and the taste is not good either
Love Valencia! Spent a week late January 2017 there for the Army. Went to an Argentine steakhouse (Gordon 10) with a few British counterparts one night. It must've been the only restaurant open before 9 PM. BTW, the Paella at the local restaurant was magnificent! The weather was good.

There is no siesta in Valencia. I do not know anybody that takes siesta in Valencia. Everybody has lunch from 2.a.m. to 4p.m. and has to go home ,park theirs car and return to work ,people do not eat sandwiches for lunch but cook their meals everyday.Usually are shops that do not have workers . Every supermarket is open from 9 a. m. to 9p.m. or 10 p.m. . Yo can find supercor from 7 a.m. 1 a.m. ( 18 hours open )
It is rare temperatures from 35 to 40 degrees . ( with the climate change sometimes you can have days with that temperature) In summer usually in july and August to have 32 or 33 degrees as usual.

There's siesta in Valencia, also last summer we had like 45 degrees, high temperature it's not rare, if you're not living here don't spread false information.
@L Lopez. I agree. Valencia is hot, but definitely not too hot. It's much more comfortable than Madrid or Rome temperatures.

Aren't Siesta's in Spain the reason for the Locals to Stay indoor s during the afternoon Summer months.💃 So the the winter months and sunshine.. Better to be outside.. it's little freezing inside.. 🥶

Summer where ? In Asturias " catalonia ? Galicia ? Euskadi ? Extremadura ? Canary islands? In august in Seville there is 35 or 40 degrees but in Oviedo is 23 o 24 degrees
Climate is Spain change a lot . You can be skiing in Granada and be in the beach just 50 km away from granada
Spain is like several countries in the peninsula área with different food,languague,culture ,climate and so on
That is why in Spain has come suevos, vándalos, alanos, godos, visigodos, greeks, fenicios,cartagineses,Román Empire and so on and the rb1 is the majority in the peninsula more than any country in West of Europe so that is why we know that mostly people in UK or Ireland their ancestors come from iberian península

I guess it's a matter of luck regarding the weather: we stayed for 4 days.... and got 3 days of non-stop rain :((( so, yeah
Orange 🍊 Trees in the city.. I pulled one.. sour...🥺...
Valencia third capital of Spain with 1 million inhabitants. It has a historic center. Fine sand beaches in Mediterranean waters 15 minutes from the center of the capital. Airport and numerous Bus and Metro lines as well as "AVE" railway station in the center of the City (high-speed train). There are highways that connect Madrid-Barcelon-Alicante. All the services you have are very good. A city with very pleasant winter temperatures. The City is all flat, there are many bike lanes throughout the City. Many restaurants and terraces to eat. With services and very affordable prices. It has 10 kilometers of parks and gardens that run through the entire city (former river channel). As well as The City of Arts-Sciences (futurist). It will like you.
That's the reason why Valencia oranges were planted throughout the city.
Go to M Miami for Heat or HOMELESS under any Express way or every WHERE.

It stinks especially from the stupid cruise ships in the harbor. They have their diesel engines running all day to generate electricity. When the wind comes from the south-east, it smells of diesel in the southern parts of the beach. The northern sections of the beach, on the other hand, are better in this case.
