Without doubt the best video log of the Cape Wrath Trail I've ever watched!
Your dedication to filming and sharing your experiences is wonderful.
I salute you and Moss on your achievements :)
I'll be doing my own CWT in May 2019 and will be watching this series of videos again for inspiration.
All the best for future hikes. :)

Thanks to you and Moss, my wife and I did half the CWT in April and then I completed the whole trail solo for charity last week. It really is a special trail and unlike all the others!
Just wanted to say a huge thank you for the inspiration and the insights which enabled me to plan the trip meticulously!
Thank you again and hope you and wee Moss are keeping well pal! 🙏🏻

@@HoundsofHowgate my pleasure mate. Your CWT video series is still far superior to anything else I’ve watched all these years later.
Are you and Moss still hiking/camping by the way? And if so any other adventures planned?
We’re thinking East Highland way next as opposed to the now too popular WHW.
And gotta ask…is the camo zPacks still going strong?

Amazingly detailed series, bloody well done filming so continuously, a lot of folks skip parts when they're tired or it's wet. So I thank you for that. When you put Moss in your bag for the last 8 miles I was bawling! She did so well and you're a strong man. Hope you're both well.

Aw, that's a wee shame that you were greetin' at the last bit wae Moss in the bag. 🤗 She was a bit better the next day and then back to normal the day after that: I think she had just pulled her shoulder a bit was all. Moss is a wee trooper so she is. 💪

Hi Hounds, laying on the sofa, leg elevated, ice on my knee I binge watched the entire Cape Wrath trail. The weather was hard on you and the insects plagued you but what an achievement. I have walked many of the glens you traversed and know how tough they can be in bad weather. Moss must have been a great companion for you and you made great team. Well done. I will now start watching the other walks you have both completed.

What an absolute amazing adventure just watched the whole series and loved every minute not only amazing effort into doing the Cape Wrath Trail but to put all the footage together and share it is amazing The bond you have with Moss is amazing it was very sad to see her limping on the final push as she had done amazing too you done. What anyone would have done and carried her a great bond I can imagine a lot of highs and a few lows but the sense of being free because of being out with nature and remote locations also a tough thing to do not only the walk but being away from your family not easy keep up the amazing videos and adventures you must have some plans for 2019 ? Many many thanks for bringing us along on this amazing adventures

Thank you very much for the amazing feedback John! I really appreciate it and it makes all the effort of carrying the camera stuff, filming and editing when I get back worth it! Yeah, Moss is a great dog. I'd ditch all my expensive hiking kit before I'd see her suffer any day!
This year we are planning on walking the length of Scotland. So we done the West Highland Way in April, Milngavie to Fort William and we done the Cape Wrath Trail in August, Fort William to Cape Wrath. So today we were out and walked from Mingave to Glasgow on the Kelvin Walkway and that is the start of the Clyde Walkway. So I'll be following that South to the end and then crossing country through Wanlockhead where I'll pick up Stage 6 of the Suthern Upland Way. That will take me to Moffat where I'll then pick up the Annandale Way and follow that South until the end. After that I just have to cut East for about 10 miles and I'll be at the border! After that I plan on doing the Southern Upland Way. It will be cool to have walked the length and width of Scotland! 👍

If you check out my West Highland Way plus my Skye Trail video series that was all shot on my Samsung S7. The only thing I did was get a gimbal for it. That makes for buttery smooth pans etc. Check out the Zhiyun Smooth 4. It's a universal smart phone gimbal. To then go next level you could look at mic mufflers to help with wind noise even better a Lav mic that you can plug straight into your phone. Check out: Rode SmartLav+. That stuff together will skin you about 130 to 150 quid but it makes a big difference when recording with your phone!

Hi Hounds. Just watched these videos over the past week or so with my wife. I completed the CWT in 2013 and watching this brought back so many memories, good and not so good. I spent ages planning my trip along with doing a section with mrs L. from Fort William to Shiel Bridge two years earlier. We have sat watching these vids and laughed and remembered stuff from 2013. I think I was slightly luckier with the weather than you from the look of things. The only trouble with seeing your trip is, it’s made me want to give it another go! Also we loved watching Moss, she seemed to be loving it, until the last day, hope she recovered quickly. Congratulations to both of you for completing the trail and thanks again for taking the time to film the trip, It’ll be really useful to anyone planning to walk the trail. Take care, cheers Pete Lambert.

Yeah, Moss is a great dog. Best hiking partner ever!
I've not had Moss since she was a pup: got her about 5 months old and rehomed her as the folk that had her couldn't handle her. Funny thing is as soon as I got her she got into her own wee personality and became a great dog! She was originally called Sammy before but I didn't think it suited her. I watched a documentary about a Norwegian explorer and he had a dog called Foss and the name Moss jumped into my head and stuck! I think it suits her. 🐺🙂

Many thanks, Hounds, for all the work you've put into these CWT videos. Have now watched the entire trail and feel exhausted. Glad to see you put your back into it on the last day - it wouldn't have been much if you'd just been able to waltz into the lighthouse compound with just 15 kg on your back, not when you could carry 30. And Moss did deserve a wee break. I've discovered these videos 2 years after the fact, so I've got some catching up to do. Will check out some of your other treks on Skye and Mull and so on. Hope this finds both of you hounds in good nick and ready for another adventure after lockdown is lifted! Cheers.

As a new subscriber, have been working my way back through your videos stuck inside on this wet & stormy day.
Thoroughly enjoyed watching the trials and tribulations of your Cape Wrath Trail series. What a way to finish, having to carry Moss in your rucksack for miles through those bogs. Must have felt like you could fly when you finally took off that rucksack ! But at least you had blue skies for the last day, and you will never forget your epic journey.
Just hope that you got a chance to enjoy doing the Trail rather than just the satisfaction of finishing it.
Remember when I was a teenager, I always rushed my long distance hikes too much. Now I am an old fart, I have to take my time - and make allowance for my limitations. But as a result I seem to enjoy the journey all the more.
ATB, and looking forward to watching more of your adventures in the future.

Hi John, nah.... I think I'll stick with Hounds, that way I'll be directing my comments at both of you. First of mate, a big congratulations , for completing not only the trail but for facing adversity and overcoming it. You said in this vid that you hoped other people contemplating doing the CWT would be informed by your collection of vids, well for me I was entertained. A brilliant video series, with narrative that was sensible, honest, amusing and down to earth. Fantastic editing along with all the work that goes with editing a vidoe to ensure the quality is good. The dedication of retreiving that camera for those river sections is true dedication. Also not too many references to jobbies.....for a change! After The Skye Trail I was abit worried about Moss, you know wether she could hack it, she did, albeit for the last day 10 miles. Sometimes my dogs developed a limp, all of a sudden. Its not always the paws, sometimes it's muscle strain in the legs, sometimes its just a case of how they lie. We're the same, if we sprain a muscle we limp and are tentative about putting weight on our feet.
To be quite honest don't know what to watch now at night! Anyway thanks for the time and effort of sharing your vids with us. Those final steps to the lighthouse have inspired me to get my finger out and move north form Torridon. When I do get to the Cape, no bus and ferry for me I'm afraid its a case of walking back along the road and walking 3 or 4 miles upstream to the nearest footbridge. Cheers Alan (aka owdjockey)

WOW ! what a totally inspirational pair you and Moss are , having watched every minute of these videos that was one epic journey , the bond between man and dog could not be greater . I've made it to the cape on 5 occasions from cornwall on a bicycle i hasten to add staying at youth hostels so have not endured the pain and discomfort or dare i say bravery you encountered , but it is still an achievement i am proud of in my advancing years . John Morrison gave me a CWT plastic card on my last visit 5 years ago . You may be familiar with the tragic tale of artist Margaret Davies who was also an experienced long distance walker , she was found barely alive by 2 shepherds late december 2002 in Kearvaig bothy having completed this journey sadly she died later of starvation and hypothermia having been air lifted to stornaway . It's not a journey for the faint hearted , but the reward for the effort is something that can't be underestimated . WELL DONE both you guys !

I’ve just binge watched the second half to help plan the second half for next year. You have given me lots to think about! Seeing you carrying Moss made me thankful I didn’t take my collie, Ziggy. Yeah, it's something you have to think about doing long hikes with your dog. Like, what if this or that happens and what will I do. It definitely adds more to the planning process and logistics. Plus it beckme not just your hike but both of you so that has to be taken into account. Like if you want to batter on but the dog is tired then you have to account for these things. I think that might be a problem for some folk. I made a whole series on hiking with dogs actually. They are up on my channel.
Don't get me wrong though, Moss is my hiking partner and I'd not have it any other way. I had talked with the folk at the TGO Challnge last year about entering but dogs weren't allowed so I didn't bother: I couldn't go hiking for 2 weeks withoot the bold yin! 👣🐾👍

Superb series, well done! I first attempted the CWT back in 2000 but had to pull out at Shiel Bridge after crossing Knoydart. I then set off from Kirk Yetholm in 2016 and walked as far as Strathcarron. In 2017, I returned to complete the trail but got sick and had to pull out again at Inchnadamph. I still haven't got to the Cape after all of these years. Your videos certainly made me want to get back out there and reach the lighthouse. Thank you for the most entertaining and inspiring CWT videos on UA-cam.

I give her 2 Glucosamine Sulphate tablets a day she is still going aged 16 today. I also purchased a Bioflow magnetic collar many years a go to try and help her joints.

Hi John, glad you enjoyed the series! 🙂
Yeah, I have a joint support mix that I put in with Moss' food: trying to keep your dog as healthy as possible is always the way, so great tip!
I've found an emergency dog carrier that I'm going to buy: it's only 240g but it will be well worth it as you just never know what is going to happen! It seems like on the second last day Moss pulled her shoulder a wee bit (sometimes she runs about mad at the start of the day and with the miles it's not good). The next day she was walking with a wee limp and then the following day she was back to normal. The carrier would also be good for river crossings and things too.
      Cheers! 🙂🐾👍

Hounds of Howgate I also give my dog 1 x 75mg baby Aspirin a day if she is in pain but use sparingly as can cause internal bleeding if you give a dog to many, I always check her poo for dark blood in it as a precaution.
I am now working my way through your other vlogs, you two should have your own series on T.V.. All the best to you two.

It took me a long time, but I finally got to the end of your epic adventure. Well worth it, these are an excellent series of vids. What a conclusion -- poor Moss and poor you having to carry her those final miles.

Exactly about Moss! I think if she had hurt her paw at some other point I would have camped for a few days to see if it got better.

Thank you Niles, much appreciated! Feedback like this totally makes all the filming and editing worth it!
If you haven't already hiked it, I would say the Skye Trail is a pretty good middle ground between the West Highland Way and the CWT for example. Then it is just a case of getting long day hikes in and consecutive days in. So like say a 15+ mile day hike one weekend and 2 consecutive 10 mile day hikes the next weekend, preferably camping overnight. Its just volume and building on time hiking I suppose. One think I would definetly reccomend for CWT training is short mile munro hikes with your full backpack to get ascent and descent leg strength built up too. I didn't do that and I think it would be really beneficial for a hike like the CWT in hindsight.
      Thanks again! 🐾👍
