@@claudiahirthirt2464 By adding something rusty to the dye water. You can also make iron water first and then use it. There are tutorials on how to make iron water or iron mordant.
Avocado pits will give a beautiful pink color. The longer you soak the items the darker the color becomes. Red cabbage will give you a beautiful reddish color, a deep blue color or a purple color depending on the ph of the water used. You can add vinegar or baking soda to the dye to change the color.
Thanks for other ideas. I used dried Sorrel to dye paper and doilies. The dye gave a deep pink color. I had limited drying space so I used white copy paper in-between layers. I have so many blush signatures I'm so happy to use. 🍵tip: putting a little hot sorrel tea in a cup with honey and cinnamon is a great treat while crafting.
Late to the game, but for others just viewing this I thought I should mention that it may be a good idea to boil any flora outdoors. Some plant leaves or flowers may give off toxic fumes that shouldn't be inhaled. Looks like there are plenty of safe options from food though. Thanks Johanna for sharing this information. Can't wait to give it all a try. With summer coming, I'll be hitting the farmer's markets.
This is so fascinating! You could dabble into this endlessly! I love the shape of the jars you keep the dyes in, and they’re beautiful just sitting on the shelf. I wonder how watercress and dandelion would color the paper. Marigolds too!
Love the colours you've produced! I use: Avocado skins. - Pink to almost purple Wilted flower heads - scented phlox, so purple, blue, pink Rusty pieces - brown, orange Mx
Gorgeous!!! Love this video.. I have been making natural dyes all weekend- Rosemary, Blackbean, Concord Grapes, yellow onion skin, red onion skin, beets, red cabbage, avocado..beautiful colors and yummy results..
I have had some interesting results with turmeric where I got some bright pink patches!!! I was also doing tea staining, as I prefer it to coffee dyed paper, so it may have mixed. I want to try Roibois tea next. I'm also a big fan of avocado dying. If you want it more pink just use the pitts/ stone. The skins add darker pink / blush tones. I haven't tried it yet but I have heard that spirulina gives a nice green too.
Purple basil makes a lovely grey-green (I mean, the beauty is surreal). Goldenrod makes an amazing yellow. I've only done this with wool but I imagine it's the same on paper.
Thank you so much for sharing this video Johanna! I was always wondering how you achieve those beautiful dyed papers and taking the time to share this with us, is just so thoughtful of you, and an awesome gift to all your followers!! Thank you so so much!! 😍😘😘😘
Oh my goodness Johanna, thankyou so much for sharing such a brilliant idea. Can’t wait to see the natural dye papers in use. I’m imagining how perfect they would be in a botanical creation. On my to do list for the next time our mulberry tree has fruit. Love the labelled storage jars of liquid and the colour samples you added to your journal :)
Fantastic! Thanks for doing all the hard work so people like me can learn then have a go, rather than avoid it because I think it's probably too hard! The colours are gorgeous and some of them quite unexpected!
Love this info and your help with dying! I've just recently started experimenting with the dying process (and my countertop unfortunately shows it). TFS the inspiration!
I'm so in love with this video!! My daughter and I did a science project with onion skins and it was fascinating!! We had a lot of fun!! The blueberries and green were really beautiful!!

Thank you for sharing, this is some thing I would like to try. I might leave it till summer so I can do it out side. I have ended up staining the worktops with food colouring before today ! The papers can then dry in the sun.
Love this, thank you. Currently learning to make my own inks and paper. Thoroughly recommend Make Ink - A Foragers Guide to Natural Inking by Jason Logan. The book is wondrous. I’m fortunate enough to live in the middle of a forest, so have a myriad of natural materials to hand. Something about the unpredictability. The alchemy of Nature and one’s imagination is magical ⭐️
Have you considered adding vinegar to one batch of red cabbage dye and baking soda to another batch? The colours will surprise you. Also a fun experiment for the kids to see.
What an awesome video and so cool all the items used to make colors. I’m fairly new at dying papers. I’ve done coffee/tea many times but today was first time with avacados and the papers came out so pretty. I have a question…I have lots of dye left and wondered about storing it. I noticed your beautiful bottles your dyes were in. Do you know the best way to store leftover dye like in a bottle, freezer, or refrigerator? Thanks for your amazing video and I’ll be checking out more of your videos. ☺️
Thank you Johanna for sharing your methods and tips. I was delighted to find your video this morning, as I experimented with food dyes just last night, and the colors weren't exactly to my liking...I will try these methods and especially now that fruits and veg are going to be plentiful with summer around the corner. Beautiful presentation, BTW.
I ve been wondering how u dye papers you use in your journals... finally u made video... thank you so much for making this video... this will be useful for making ☺☺ TFS 👍👍👍
I like this idea of using natural dyes. Your colors came out so beautifully! How long does this kind of dye last in your glass bottles? And do you have to store it in the refrigerator?
Susan Taylor Brown i don’t think the dyes would last long term even in the refrigerator without some kind of additive. But i think you could freeze them if you needed to store them for a while. I will be using my dyes asap after making x
@@JohannaClough Ooo, I just had an idea. I wonder what kind of background would result if I froze the dye and then used a cheese grater to shave pieces off. I could let these pieces randomly fall onto the paper and melt leaving their color. Johanna, have you tried this?
Sorry if I missed this. I did finally get around to making my own avacado dye, but I don't recall if you advise refrigerating these homemade dyes or not. I hardly have the room in my fridge, but if it wiser to keep them there, I will. I will soon be making red-cabbage dye too! TFS!! ~tina

Hi Bernadette - I just did a red cabbage dye the other day and other than during boiling there was no smell. I was hoping for purple but ended up with a beautiful blue.
Bernadette Taylor i had the same experience as Nikoline, the cabbage was quite smelly during making and using the dye but once the papers dried they didn’t smell. The stain that leaves the strongest smell out of this lot is coffee!!
