Sabres fan here and even I get chills from this whole sequence. Huge richards fan. I don't care what anyone says about him, he was one of the purest hockey players I've ever seen. A do it all kind of player. Scored, hit, played a two way game. I refuse to judge someone who had or has substance abuse issues. We all know how good he was. Plus people forget he was around for a while when he went to LA. Wasn't like he was a 24 year old who suddenly vanished. His style of play had to have taken its toll anyway. This whole sequence is literally what I've been craving from hockey for a long time. This is hockey.
Totally agree with every word. All of the "goal scorers" get all of the applause now, but I always loved the "two-way players" of the game. Richards was definitely one of them.
Wow, that should have read that he could do it all! Should have checked that before I sent it! Richards was one of the best, and I cried when he and Carter were traded. You don't see moves like that anymore!
Shoulder injuries led to his demise. May have led to the substance abuse too. But he put it all out there, just an incredible will to win. And he won everything. World junior gold, memorial cup, Calder cup, Olympic gold, and the stanley cup.
@MrBuddhaZen 1) His production dipped way down after he left. 2) We got Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds for him. 3) He did cocaine and was caught and suspended several times. 4) We traded Schenn to get the Blues 1st round picks in back to back years (2017 pick was Morgan Frost and the 2018 pick was Joel Farabee.) Case in point, the Flyers knew what they were doing when they traded Richards and Carter.
@@xKrAzY8sx Yeah absolutely. I was floored when Carter/Richards were both traded, but the haul they got back really does look great (although, no Stanley Cup appearances since 2010...) Schenn/Simmonds and Voracek/Couturier are all quality players that kept PHI competitive from 2011 to now. It sucks seeing Carter/Richards/B Schenn all hoist the cup for different teams, but patience could pay off with Frost & Farabee + other Draft day home runs like Hart, Sanheim, Konecny, Aube-Kubel, Ratcliffe, Cam York.
@@xKrAzY8sx if anything the jackets should feel like they messed up. They gave up a ton for carter and then he left for basically nothing. The haul for philly was great. Also great point with richards. Sure la won those two cups. Will say 12' richards did a lot to help. Carter was big in both. But Philly did the right thing. They got a ton for those two guys. And it's helping them to this day.
That whole shift was as much about Bergeron's lack-o-hustle as it is Richard's desire. First, with his head down ala Lindros, he lets Richards run him over which led to Coburn getting a pretty good look at the Halak but then going the other way with Coburn's rebound he let Coburn wipe him out at the Flyers blue line AND THEN he stops skating again at his own blue line while, IDK, watching Halak and Hamrlik collide going for the puck? which allowed Richards to sweep the backhand in the empty net. Skate till ya hear the whistle.
Bergeron was a LHD playing the right side so Richards knew he might have trouble stopping the wraparound with his backhand so took the risk and it paid off. Great example not only of Richard's hustle but of his hockey IQ and anticipation.
And this was in the clinching game 5 of the Eastern finals, not just some random game. And likewise, what a shit effort all over the ice by that tiny-ass Marc-Andre Bergeron

When people forget how awesome Mike Richards was. It's sad how much he regressed quickly.
Cause he’s a smallish forward trying to play like Lindros. Even Lindros got worn down. Obviously
@@geoffreyallen9314 Lindros didn't keep his head up. Richie liked partying and pills.

Cocaine is a hell of a drug
The Epitome of what our Captain should be
He always brought it
my favorite flyer goal of all time
I remember watching this live on TV. You could feel the energy through the TV. I was on my feet in the living room
Same I was standing in my couch lol
Never gets enough credit. Guy was all blood, sweat and tears to get it done.
Man this was electric. I remember watching this live. Crowd was so into it.
"as the tone changes" gives me goosebumps to this day. Let's get back to this level Flyers.
The lesson kids: sometimes you make your own “luck”
This play alone needs to be in the Hall of Fame!
Listen to that crowd.
I miss being excited about the flyers
Me too
Richards in his prime. What a captain. Miss him!
Chills still.
Whoa, what a sequence!!!!! Fighting for it!
Me too. He was the greatest flyer ever
of all time!
no and no ...........
One of the greatest goals ever imho
A true sequence of playoff hockey, damn that crowd was loud!
God I miss fans in the stands.
When the Flyers were fun to watch
Oleeeeee ole ole ole ooooooole ooooole
The 2019 flyers need to watch this.
4 years later and this video clearly was not watched
This is what hockey in south Philly is supposed to be. Not the rangers fans taking over out stadium
At the same time that Philly sports had Mike Richards and Jeff Carter they also had Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins 🔥
And Chase Utley, who arguably was the Phillies player most similar in style to Mike Richards.
Bob Cole was the best 📻 ❤️

Bob Cole, the GOAT
One of the best goals ever scored... one of the Best bounces too! Lol
So good ya gotta feel for the Habs lol
I'm sorry Bobby Clarke, but THIS is the greatest goal in Flyers history.
Nope the Giroux goal when he put Crosby on his ass and then gathered the puck and deposited in the back of the net!
danny briere from the point
Roenick's ot goal in Toronto was better

Should see him now, bro is married and owns a farm north of here
