    Terry,
So great to see and hear you. Kate and I were your neighbors in Tujunga in the early 80s. you have't changed a bit. Love "kill the wabbit."

Very informative. I play a tenor by have a couple of guys in my section of 7 trombones that play bass. Basically they sound very similar to my tenor except they have a tremendous lower range that sounds awesome. Gotta' love those pedal tones when the situation calls for them.
I'm biased, of course, but in my opinion the trombone is the BEST all round instrument. They can scream, growl, play softly and delicately and literally sing. They are the closest instrument to the human voice.

We all have our favorites. The trombones have been around for centuries, as oppossed to the sax or baritone, which appeared in the 1800's. Beethoven composed many symphonies which feature trombones prominently for different effects. The t-bones have had many improvements the last 100 yrs. or so, most notably the addition of the moisture valve. My t-bone teacher once told me that prior to that improvement, the player would literally have to remove the slide and dump it rather than just use key!

I visited Mr. Minick's (sp?) "garage" once, a long time ago.. what a treat that was, he was an odd and brilliant man...

I'm really glad to hear that this man is spreading the knowledge of how to play the bass trombone, I'm sure Thornton are now producing excellent musicians, just like the rest of America.

Ahhh, I remember the first time I played a pedal not on my tenor bone.

nope, Woodwinds have a limited range while brass is only limited by your chops. A tenor trombone can go lower than a bari and as high as a tenor (not including altissimo notes)

Any suggestions for the Mouthpiece, I have a Bach 50b from the 80's. I have a 1G and 1 1/2G Bach mouthpiece but I have never really liked them. I had a mouthpiece that was superior but someone stole it and I don't remember the brand. I started playing again and I am less than impressed with the standards.

Here's a video of a trombonist playing 7 octaves! The guy playing 7 octaves is the bass trombonist of the Royal Concertegebouw Orchestra. I'm sorry, but I really doubt your bari range is 7 octaves. Trombone can do all of that stuff too, you know.

It wouldn't post. So just search "7 octave range on trombone." It should be the first result. The thumbnail is (you guessed it) a guy with a trombone.

That's why trombonists do what is called a "lip trill."

@LowReedExpert11 Your bari range is not 7 octaves
    Low A to Altissimo A = 3 octaves
Very very good players could maybe get another 2 octaves
So at best you're hitting 5 octaves + even if you could play 7 octaves, most of it would be squeaks that have no musical purpose. Unlike the trombone, where its entire range can be utilized for a variety of effects

Stacked axial flow valves, aka dependent valves.

I'm not even that good at trombone, and can easily hit a seven octave range! And, like what the other guy said, woodwinds are limited in high octaves. Brass do have a cap for low notes, but TECHNICALLY, you could get a trombone higher than a flute. Though it isnt really humanly possible.
