  • Thanks PCBWay.com - I went to the amazing vintage computer swap meet hosted by VCF in Wall, NJ, and I found entirely way too many amazing vintage computers! Mac stuff, vintage UNIX machines, and some super funky laptops.
Plus, I got to hang out with Steve from @Mac84 and Mike from Mike's Mac Shack! Check out Steve's finds from the swap meet here: • VCF 2021 Swap Meet Fin... and here: • VCF 2021 Swap Meet Fin...
I hope you're planning on going to the VCF's Vintage Computer Festival East this October - because I'll be there!

Heya, I'm the one who sold you the Compaqs and the Apple monitor, the heads are stuck in the one Compaq drive so that's why it is whining. You'll also want to replace the capacitors in the screens, I had a friend tell me this and he said it made them a lot better.

The Color Computer 2 only outputs RF, like the Atari 2600 and whatnot. It won't work if you plug it into a composite monitor. You'll need an adapter to convert the RCA jack to F-type, and plug it into an antenna input of a television.

    • @PET_-rp9rx

Yep, but the one in the video most likely isn’t.

@TheSatanicCoder it is much better to get a composite mod though. Then you can get composite directly without a VCR. Zippsterzone.com sells a mod among others

    Hey there Action Retro,
For the SPARCstation, the physical address errors you are seeing have to do with failed or bad RAM. Try reseating all of the modules, or even take a can of pressured air to the slots before putting them back. If no go, you've got some bad modules, or a bad capacitor near one of the failing slots.
    Best Regards,
    Brent Pantera

That tube is not an Apple IIgs tube. It's the high-res, which is meant only for a Mac. This won't work with a IIgs. But the IIgs version looks *almost* identical. You can tell it apart by the angled power LED and a few other subtle cues.

    • @JVHShack
      @JVHShack 3 роки тому +1

I was going to say just that. One other clue: the power LEDs are at least similar between the Quadra 700 and the monitor from the swap meet.

We really need to expand the retro pc community. Old laptops are so fun to collect. I have tons of old hp ones since my first pc was a hp I stuck with them. Even computers from the 2010s are fun to collect. Have so many cool designs molded into the plastic. I miss when laptops were unique and not just bland aluminum and glass.

If the screen on that first Zenith is anything like that of the average Gameboy, the lines can be fixed with a quick reflow of the solder where the ribbon cable joins the display panel. Watch practically any of The Retro Future’s Gameboy restorations (where he isn’t replacing the screen with a modern alternative) to see how Elliot does it.

Solaris is a UNIX. It's not "UNIX-like". The SS10 can have upto 4*200mhz processors with Ross processors but this is uncommon, single and dual is more common. With SUN's, if you disconnect the keyboard, they default to the serial port for console. Your IDProm is dead. You need to fix the battery, use the OBP to reprogram the chip, run "nvsave". Yes the IDPROM saves the MAC addr but also all the date, time, where to boot, and other variables stored in 'printenv' command. Once you reprogram it from OBP commands, recalculate the checksum, it'll work just fine. If you don't change the battery, it'll lose this when powered off. Ultra1 works the same way. Ultra1 was the first 64bit system. Ultra1's have a green logo on front for SBus video (cg6/leo/etc) and red spot for 24bit Creator3d with UPABus. Speeds are 143mhz, 167mhz and 200mhz for both green and red. You can 'probe-scsi-all' to see what scsi devices they can see. To see all the OBP commands, enter "sifting words". Stop-A will drop you to OBP but be careful not to do this after the system is booted into the O/S as you can corrupt the state of the O/S and kernel data. If the IDProm is dead on a SUN, on a lot of models it will reset the system on startup to "diag-mode" and "mfg-mode" (manufacturing mode). Use printenv/setenv to change this. Also with either of these modes set the system can take upto 10minutes to test things before any serial port or graphical console output. The system may not be dead if it's non-responsive. Just leave it alone. I really hope you have lots of fun with these systems. :) They're wonderful and still supported by NetBSD with current Operating Systems and of course lots of old Solaris stuff. The SS10 may also be able to run NeXTSTEP with 1 processor with some wiggle.

Just remember that the Sun microsystem computers all have a CMOS battery soldered to the CMOS chip itself so if that battery is dead you will receive an error code on Startup you can just bypass that error code by pressing F1 I believe on the keyboard hopefully unless somebody has tampered with the CMOS chip and added their own custom CMOS to the unit then you're in trouble

You got lucky with the AppleColor monitor. 3 years ago when I got mine for $700 (with a free complete Apple IIgs with high-speed SCSI, a hard drive, 4BM RAM, and a ZIP GSX that came along with it ;o) it worked for about a week before the flyback gave up and made some really nasty arcing noises. So now I'm back on the lookout for another one (or a replacement high-voltage section).
The SS10 has a dead NVRAM battery, of course. Those RAM errors are exactly that: OBP thinks there's an error with the RAM. If you can scare up the documentation (hopefully Oracle hasn't disappeared it), it'll tell you exactly what's where in your SPARCStation 10 (and the Ultra1, too)
The Ultra1 looks to take narrow SCSI, but will need special sleds to properly mount the hard drive. Very lucky the NVRAM is good on that machine. I got a Sun Blade 100 whose NVRAM was stone-dead (and used a different way to restore it to the hostid FAQ I used for my sun4m and sun4c lunchboxes). The Ultra2 I know for a fact takes SCA (wide SCSI in a special connector) and uses a different type of sled.

That system kept me in business for ten years running everything from Photoshop to FoxPro to AutoCad to IDRISI GIS on System 7.5, DOS 6.2 and Win 95 (all included). It all worked and I had it booted up in my front yard, and sold it to the first person who looked at it. I had no idea.

You can tweak a pot at the rear for the brightness - these displays had a tendency to go a bit dull.

    Sun #1: Bad ram error
Contura Aero 4/33C: Bad hard drive. The head is stuck on the platter. The siren noise is the head servo and the platter servo trying to spin. It's "jiggling" at an audio frequency. You might be able to get it running by removing the hard drive, applying external power to it, and while it's making the siren sound smack it with a rubber mallet on the side. While it's trying to spin a little percussive maintenance might make the heads "jump" enough to allow the platters to spin and then allow the heads to park off of the platters like it should have done the last time it was powered off. The drive might run long enough to pull data from it but I wouldn't trust the drive to live a long time.

They dont always have to be expensive, though. And just yesterday I picked up a fully working 2008 (2 x Quad Core) Mac Pro 2,1 for just €40. I've been on eBay for a long time, mainly as a buyer. I recently tried listing a few items for sale - it ain't like it use to be. Not only does eBay take 25%-33% of your sale, they've added restrictions on the number of sales and the value you can sell each month. In Canada the casual online seller uses Kijiji, but then most buyers expect "garage sale" prices... sigh.

Either somewher in the camera, or somewhere in the receiver monitor you should be able to tap in a composite signal.
But as others have said, that coco only has RF output.

That drive in the first compaq, it sounds like a video I seen recently of a Quantum Daytona with the heads stuck. Apparently these have the same issue as the desktop quantums of that era with melting rubber sticking the heads in the parking position.

Could you tap into a composite pad on the inside of the camera and effectively broadcast the TRS output to the dinky TV? It would be so cool to fit an RCA jack to the bottom of the camera 😃
If you were feeling really intrepid, you could gut the camera and fit the broadcast parts inside the TRS case!

Fn - Alt - Del should bring up a monitor from ROM with some test functions and such on that 8088 Zenith ZFL laptop. I have one of those and I found that out accidentally.

That almost happened to me. The power adapter included when I bought my HP Palmtop was the wrong style. Fortunately it has enough reverse polarity protection that nothing broke.

I have some old SGI and Sun software, I don’t have the computers anymore, if you want it I’ll send it to you. I have the install cds for IRIX 6?, and Solaris 7. I also have a bunch of Adobe software for IRIX, though I’m not sure if I still have the serial keys.

Sean, I have an identical Sun keyboard and mouse, if you want them. We used SPARCstations to RIP & drive Xerox Docutechs at my old job years ago. Hit me up on iMessage or Discord if you're interested! :D Also, watch out for that Ultra case - looks like it's cracked pretty bad!

To clarify, Solaris is not a UNIX-like OS; it is UNIX derived from AT&T UNIX and fully licensed. SunOS, however, is a BSD derivative and could be described as a UNIX-like OS.
Also. the Suns uses an OpenBoot PROM (just like some Macs). Google will reveal everything you need to know.

Bsd has a real unix lineage. We have source code to all of them at this point, BSD directly derives from the definitive unix, 7th edition.

Yup. Supply and demand plus popularity. Personally I love everything vintage computing, but my fear is that I will never use a specific machine that I buy. So my collection is slim and I keep to a few specific platforms, just to actually force my self to use what I own. The worst situation, is to let these machine wait, gather dust and then they are dead once you get around to actually wanting to use them. That is money out the window in my opinion.
