  • In this video I show you how to Heat Anodize Titanium. Learn what Tools/Materials you need & Step by Step how to achieve this effect!!!
    Sometimes referred to as an Entropic finish, this Ano Technique is very interesting and fun to play with. You can get results that mimic Timascus, in natural light the depth of color is impressive. This Ano seems to be very durable as well.

    Thank You for posting this, I'm older and retired and love to indulge in new custom techniques for my knives. I've asked other UA-camr's about how to do this, even the gentleman you mentioned, but they all wanted to keep it a secret, and that's their prerogative, so I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us. I've subscribed and will soon get started myself. If along the way I find any nuances pertaining to this way of anodizing, I'll be sure to pass it on to you. That Twosun looked great, I particularly liked the more bronze look myself, but both sides came out fabulous. Thanks Again

    Thank you for actually explaining this. I've seen so many videos where they show it but never actually explain what chemicals they are using. A couple of notes, first you don't need to keep the pieces in water. The titanium oxide layer will form in water as water has oxygen dissolved in it. The same reason steel will still rust (oxidize) in water. Second, it doesn't matter that titanium has an oxide layer on it, since that's what we're trying to do when anodizing anyway. The naturally formed oxide layer is thin enough that it won't cause an issue with electrical conductivity. It does help to make sure they are totally clean though and maybe keeping them in distilled water is a good way to keep dust and hair from falling on them

    Thanks for that valuable video, I told you before: You're the best.
    Since I watched this video , I made ton of trials to achieve similar finish. I succeeded partially. I have no problem doing ultra mirror finish preparation of titanium. At this point every thing is standard. On the step of heating, I heated titanium till bronze colour and I dipped it in ferric chloride. For 5 seconds then washed it with water....nothing happened!!!!
    The titanium kept glossy dark bronze colour with no added effect.
    I tried increasing heating, I achieved hues of purple and blue then dip it in ferric chloride same way you did, Nothing happened again. Ferric chloride was very concentrated.
    I repeated all steps again with spraying of ferric chloride on the hot piece, I got rusty brown spots where FC hit the hot titanium, and after 10 seconds I got light blue scatters like a galaxy.
    I repeated all steps with hot titanium that turned blue and sprayed diluted ferric chloride using strikes to the hair of a tooth brush, the results was so nice. It was exactly galaxy effect with blue background and dark pink purple hues with scattered very light blue stars.
    I want this lightning strikes pattern. What to do?
    Do I try dilute the ferric chloride and dip the hot scales in? Or what?
    Another Idea: what if we etch the hot scale with multi etch instead of ferric chloride, what will be the result?
    I appreciate all you efforts in respecting everyone, answering every comment and spreading your experience.
    Hope you share more videos about your trials in getting more pattern with this heat ano jop. And to those who want to keep secret I say: It is meaningless, not everyone will try to do that very difficult demanding jop with this very long curve of learning.
    Thanks again and sorry for long message.

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Sorry your having issues. I use straight FC acid. How are you heating the Ti? If you're using a torch what kind and what fuel? Just to be clear the acid is not etching the Ti, it's only the quench. Multi-Etch will not produce the same effect. Let me know about the heat source, we'll go from there.

    • @OCD4EDC
      @OCD4EDC  4 роки тому +2

      @@ESLAMEID The torch is your problem my friend. I use a MAP gas torch, which burns @ around 3750 deg F. A butane torch even a "Strong" one burns @ about 2600 deg F. And the butane torch does not have a big enough flame to keep the part hot enough before the quench. You need to heat the part evenly and once up to temp get it in the acid within 2-4 seconds. You need the acid to boil against the surface. Check out my Knife mods playlist, I have links in the ANO video descriptions on what torch to buy. once you have the torch, get MAP gas "Yellow Bottle" instead of Propane. MAP gas has a larger, hotter flame. Thanks for watching, Good Luck!!!

For 4 second and washed it with water. I get strange patterns. Always big area in the middle with no effect, and periphery shows some lighter blue color with some strikes. I can't get consistent pattern although I have consistent heat and primary colour. Any advice?

      Hey @Stassa23
      If you don't mind, I'd have a few questions on how to improve my entropic finishes.
      1. How diluted should the ferric chloride be? The less concentrated it is, the longer it takes to etch obviously, but have you found some kind of soft spot you like to use? I have 1L of 40% Ferric at hand.
      2. Do you do some sort of sanding and finishing before anodizing or just some clean up and then straight to the ano tank?
      3. Do you use Multi-Etch or something similar? I'm trying to find an alternative that doesn't have HF in it or produces HF. My current idea would be a combination of caustic Soda and H2O2. Any thoughts on that?
      I would greatly appreciate any feedback. Thank you in advance :)

      You can heat anodize with the torch also. The oxidation colors change at different temps. It goes gold, purple, blue, reddish purple, brownish gray, greenish blue, and eventually to a dull grey

    Yeah twosun definitely makes some really nice blades. I just received the ts186 it's a slipjoint with a clip point Bowie blade made of s90v with the liners and bolsters all one piece and solid marbled carbon fiber filling the rest of the handel, a super sexy design in my opinion and a hell of a slicer you should really check that model out.

    I am nodding a crkt pilar as we speak and have been stuck on how I want to anodize my little project.....now I know! Thank you so much. I would be interested in seeing the difference in finish and color with this process on polished vs stone washed vs sandblast finish. I know they will look quite different. Just wondering to what extent. Thanks for a great video at just the right time!

    • @OCD4EDC
      @OCD4EDC  4 роки тому

      Just an FYI, this specific type of anodizing effect will only work on Titanium. The CRKT Pilar is a Stainless steel framelock in stock form. So unless you have custom Ti scales for it, you'll be limited to a different process. You can heat ANO Stainless, but I have no idea what will happen if you put it into the acid. I have not tried it. But hey give it a shot, it might be cool. Just be safe!!!!
      Yes you can do this with a stone washed, bead blasted or other finish. I have done that, it still works, just not as vibrant and not a lot of depth in the colors. But to each there own, do what make you happy.

    Awesome result! So, the only way to get vibrant color is to smooth and polish the titanium….so you have to trade out any grip traction that you originally might’ve had? Do detent balls just sit passively, or do they snap in/out…if snap in, how do you get them out?

    7:28 if you were to wear a plain white T-shirt and or have something like white poster paper or white board around you so the white is reflected in the metal surface the camera would pick up the colors much better without any Distortion and glare other colors like your surroundings and your clothing and even the counter space you're working on making it infinitely easier for us the viewers to see the color changing and the overall color in general.
    Not for you so much but from the camera perspective and everyone watching your videos it would be a big Improvement over the current setup

    As Arte Johnson used to say on Laugh on "verrry interesting". I have tried doing ano on ti using 9v batteries as depicted on UA-cam by SharpKnifeNut's and have had mixed results with it. After watching this video, I'd say that heat anodizing titanium is a better way to go. I really liked the rather psychedelic finish on the lock bar side. It was far out man 😎. Tell me, what kind of acid did you use and where can it be bought?
    Have a good one Justin.

    • @OCD4EDC
      @OCD4EDC  4 роки тому +1

      I wouldn't say one way is better, they are just different. Each process has pro's & con's and almost opposite effects on Titanium. Electric anodizing is way easier with a power supply instead of a ton of 9 volt batteries.
      Thanks for watching!!!
