Having a friend with this addiction I’ve given up cleaning and organizing her house. I just stand in the door and wait for her. I can’t do it anymore.

This whole process seems so enabling with everyone else doing the work while Sandra kicks back and seems to enjoy the whole thing as a social event. There doesn't seem to be any incentive for change when the cheerful cleaners will just show up again when the hoard builds back up.

In the American version of Hoarders they embarrass and demean them in front of the cameras, and pay for thier therapy afterwards, but they still revert to the same behavior.

She did have some surgeries so she might not be able to do the kind of lifting required for this clean. But yeah, she's getting to micromanage in a way that's probably not best

Compared to American hoarders her home is pristine!!! Here in the US there are usually mice and rats and roaches and spiders and fruit flies and just plain FILTH, with non-functional bathtooms and kitchens.

Well, a shopping addiction is one thing, but I think the problem is she compensates that she's lonely and has got nothing useful to do with her time.
Maybe supporting less fortunate (, financially speaking) people or finding a hobby she loves (not shopping).
I know from my own experience with hoarders that cleaning up for them doesn't help in the long run without them seeing the problem(s).
She says it's annoying not finding things. She doesn't say it's too much stuff and that it's ruining her beautiful home.
I hope she gets the psychological help she needs, because it's not the life anyone should be living.

This is nothing compared to some of the American episodes. Sandra's house was cluttered, but NOT squalid with rotting food, pet and human waste, etc.

I think she needs to do a course. Buried in Treasures based on the book for Hoarders. It includes NON shopping trips, (distress tolerance exercises) and lots of insight building. If she could be prudent she would realise she only needs to buy human food, dog food and toilet paper and paid her bills and rates. If she put the rest in a term deposit,? so she does not touch it. Otherwise it looks like she needs a money manager….as she is so quickly rehoarding after having it all done with so much assistance previously.

That voice...like listening to rough rocks being dragged down a chalkboard!
I don't understand why, in the British/UK version of this show, the hoarder just sits around and does nothing, and the cleaners do every last bit of work. The hoarder never learns one single thing of value, and as another commenter pointed out, she's just going to fill the cleared out space up aqain. Probably already has, this episode having been done in late 2021-ish.

If she is willing to sell her belongings for a dime on the dollar and her primary concern is to pass the stuff on she can be successful, that is what I do with stuff I don't want anymore, or find a good charity shop that actually gives back to the community instead of a profit secondhand shop, both of these choices are very rewarding to me

I don't have a lot of confidence that she'll succeed. She loves the open space; will she want to fill it now? What is the plan for finding an activity that is satisfying and not harmfully addictive?

I know that hoarding is a mental disorder and when I watch these shows, I have full empathy for the person who is fighting their inner demons. But there's something about Sandra that tells me she craves the attention she is getting for this disorder. To have a team bring your home back to a livable condition and then refill it again goes beyond comprehension. Maybe it's me being judgmental... for some reason Sandra irritates the hell out of me and doesn't seem genuine.

She never had balance in her life. Her life was her work--100 hours a week! She lost that, she just found a new obsession to delv fully into.

  • @alinehunt283
    @alinehunt283 Місяць тому +1

I like that this version of the show trusts the subjects to talk intelligently about how they experience life and how their illness works. It allows them to explain in their own words and provides clarifications from people with professional perspectives, and any progress is victory no matter what might happen next. I'm sure the events are brightened up somewhat but producers but they people who are on this show always come off as pretty comfortable talking as opposed to the dramatic american version which does some of this but in a less kind way.
Anyway just be good to people even when they're not good

These hoarders complain about how messy their homes are; they can't find anything and how they hate living like they do, but it's themselves that have created this mess. Stop wallowing in self pity, and clean up your act!

IN AA, there is a saying, "Self-awareness avails us nothing". After Step 1, you have to do the next step, and the next, and so on. Most people who suffer from any addiction are aware they have one. Almost none will ever recover.

I think she layered everything all over the house and clamed that she's a horder, just to get people to do it all. The reason I think this is because the horders I've seen, their homes are absolutely disgusting. Full of dirt, old food, mold, webs, anything else you could think of. I've even seen carpets haved to be pulled out. So that's why I thought that. All her boxes and stuff is clean, even the floor.

    • @Lunafalls

There are degrees of hoarding; Sandra's situation was relatively tame. It seems to me her underlying problem is compulsive shopping.

This is just so damn dangerous!
If you work like 40-70 hours a week and you love what you do, it becomes your whole life.
Unfortunately this life will come to an absolute standstill the moment you retire.
My fiance showed me that you need a hobby, another purpose to your life to not get dangerously bored the moment you feel lonely and empty.
He is documenting statistics and wrote his own pen and paper game.
I have a little shop where i craft handmade gift cards/ birthday cards.

Unfortunately mental illness is very very real.. a lot of these people have severe mental illnesses... and in the United States the hoarders show.. at least 10 people ended up in a nursing home.. group homes.. because of their severe mental illnesses.. you should not judge these people until you hear the story behind it..
