I think a huge part of it is, it seems like on this show, the hoarders have already done the hard work of therapy and coming to terms with it. By the time the show starts filming, they're ready to let go. Where in the US version of the show, the hosts don't care one bit about the mental health of the people, they just want drama for TV. So they come in and start throwing everything away and the hoarders aren't mentally ready to be on that step yet. But it makes for good, trashy TV.
That's crazy because I just made the comment on a completely different video. The first English horror video I ever watch and I made the comment that boy these hoarders in England sure aren't as mean and nasty and demanding is the ones in America
Instead of buying clothes to meet people, start buying food for one of those food donation service centers and volunteer to help out. You'll make human contact and also help people who can't even afford the minimum amount of food to eat.
She walks with a cane , so she can’t stand without it for more than 2 or 3 minutes at most , she’d have to find a volunteering thing where she can sit down at all times ...I doubt it exists . I wouldn’t be able to stand for long or help more than a few minutes before needing rest . Old age is tough . But I don’t hoard . My flat is quite empty in fact ....easy to clean .
@@marie34K You never know unless you investigate. But at least if she can't find a job like that, she can at spend money on food. There's a good possibility that whoever picks up the food can at least drive her over there and she can see the gratefulness of the people there.
People with "clutter blindness" have a higher tolerance for disorder and piles of stuff. They're not actually blind, but they just don't see; it doesn't register in their mind. I only discovered that I had this problem by watching "hoarders." Something seemed familiar... YIKES!
I think the "Hoarders" therapy worked wonders for me, I've watched so many episodes that nowadays I barely buy anything, I'm just too traumatized ahahahaha
I doubt that's true. If you didn't regularly throw things away such as clothes that had holes in them, wrappers, plastic bags, dishes and items that broke. Also if you supplemented with garage sale finds and taking things that other people have thrown out. You'd fill a house very quickly.
It's interesting to see the horder mindset. She's doing very well trying to get rid of things, but still when facing a mountain of stuff she's still worried that she'll lose something--something she can't even remember, can't even get to. It didn't even EXIST to her until they pull it out.
After watching many hoarding shows, there is a disconnect with their need for love and companionship. Their need for social interaction: shopping. They move slowly, speak slowly and get upset when people try to help them. Subjecting others to their tempers and long drawn process of dragging the process, even when help is rendered or offered. It must be their terms, time and choice. Once you throw something that they feel is a treasure, the whole verbal avalanche starts. Snapping at people and sometimes doing things that they know have consequences of isolation. Some of them have narcissistic personalities. Hoarding clean and new items is one thing; hoarding trash and litter is another thing. Very depressing watching these people suffer from this disorder (and revert to it if no continued support is accepted) * I come from a background of family members having OCD and hoarding tendencies, diagnosed 😢❤ Sending love and hugs, I love this channel and the help given.
Your comment describes the characteristics and aspects of what makes up hoarding disorder. Anxiety, irritability, executive dysfunction, impulsively.... not narcissism
@ In my family member’s case, it is a mix of covert narcissistic traits as well as OCD, as well as what you have mentioned of those distinct characteristics unfortunately.
I work for a disabled woman who never goes anywhere, unfortunately, but Dr appointment maybe once a month if that. Yet she addicted to online shopping for clothes. She never wears anything but her pajamas. She even buys hella shoes yet yet physically is unable to wear them. The shopping is filling avoid but she doesn't see it. I try to get her to go out, to at least have places to go to wear the clothes. But she wants nothing to do with it.
It's a sense of normality for her, I guess. She must be feeling the emptiness in her life. Buying stuff must keep her occupied, so she doesn't feel something she doesn't want to. Instead of telling her, what she should do, help her to get a hobby. Maybe making things with wool? Like small carpets? With a punching needle? It's easy to manage. She can make gifts and get appreciation. Or she could paint, maybe painting with numbers (don't know how it's called).
@@elale8016 I have tried and tried. It's to the point she gets upset if you try to get her into anything. She's just really depressed and refuses help.
My neighbor across the street is sort of that way; she orders tons and tons of stuff online---FedEx, UPS, and two other delivery services stop at her apartment almost daily. How she has room in her tiny one-bedroom apartment to fit all that junk is beyond me, but her housekeeper says that it's all carefully stuffed in. Ms. D. weighs around 500 pounds, too, so she no longer goes anywhere at all. She used to get into her huge, custom-built motorized wheelchair and whiz around the neighborhood, just happily enjoying the ride, and visiting with anyone who was outside and stopped to talk with her for a few minutes. She isn't alone---her brother moved in wth her 18 months ago, and is sleeping on the sofa, and there are homecare nurses in every day, as well as the housekeeper. She has many visitors, mostly nieces, all throughout the week, so I know she isn't lonely. She just doesn't want to go out, likely because it's a huge hassle.
But there is so much more to the online world other than shopping. Doesn't she watch youtube channels with her interests instead? Funny cat videos? Watch livestreams and leave comments.
@markusgorelli5278 she does do those things, but unfortunately she was kinda a shopaholic before her disability and it appears to have gotten way worse. She even has someone controlling her money but she finds ways.
Love the little space in the conservatory he was able to carve out for her in the end, what a beautiful spot to sit and enjoy the garden, hope she is doing well
This episode is from around ten years ago, so she'd be 75-ish by now. Probably has to have help with cleaning. And the word is DISCOMFORT, not "uncomfort."
I think it might help if the person was taken out of the home for a month and the house was left exactly as they left it. While they are away they can be taken in supervised trips to the shops etc and given the tools to resist buying. Then take them back to their home so they can see it with fresh eyes
That would help some hoarders. But hoarding is an outward symptom of a variety of issues that require different approaches. It’s like digestive issues can have several causes that are treated in different ways.
👍Much cleaner, even more organizedlike into "depts".One of my jobs here in USA is clean outs.I can't count how many jobs I refused to take despite needing money badly. American hoarders have maggots, rats, bed bugs, roaches, slime from who knows whatever the original foods were before it decomposed.Every virus, bacteria, germ and disease you can think of are in USA hoarder houses. The attitudes of the hoarders here are horrendous.
What a difference, compared to hoarders here in the States! American hoarders come up with all kinds of bizarre reasons why they keep things. Not to mention, they are rude and argumentative.
@Lokisqueen22 This lady Jan could have had a meltdown if she'd been pushed too hard and too fast. I sense that they structured their work operations very effectively. Where the client mainly hears the lead man's voice. And the other fellas are the worker bees. No loud voices from them, no disrespect. They also identified which zones of the house would have the most impact for her, after a decade of being buried under all the bags, and goods. I think some of the shame would have been taken away by that team as well.
I think the American shows go for more confrontational drama. Look at all the other reality shows that use promos of people fighting and throwing things to get viewers. This show seems to cut away if the hoarder is getting very upset, then come back when things are calmer.
You do know that touching wood doesnt actually help, right? You can pray to God Almighty who is there for you and wants to help you. He has open arms, you only have to go to Him.
Since she has likely forgotten what she has in those piles, she needs to open every bag and box and look in. Maybe it would be better if she could ask herself - exactly how many of this or that does she want to have in her house. So if she wants 3 coats, 2 hats, 2 suitcases as example, then once she has her limit, then anything George finds in that category can be bagged up and carried out. It would make things more complicated but it seems to me that unless she has a firm limit in her mind at least for some basic categories, then all that is going to happen is that she will feel that her decisions aren't being respected. 🤷♂
I'm starting into this myself... I think ingestion matters alot, a proper diet with loads of fresh salad and recycling. I'm not sure why reminds me of Pica

Janice and Nigel are both correct: her affliction began out of loneliness, but there are healthy ways to deal with it. Unfortunately, it developed into mental illness.
Nigel has had his home cleared twice; he was in 'The Hoarder Next Door', with Stelios who tried to help him, but the majority of hoarders will rehoard for the rest of their lives.
"I'm going to fix that", is in the top five "explanations" to not let things go. If anyone knows the top five list, please send it along and I'll put it on my bathroom mirror to see it daily.
The British hoarders are so polite compared to their surly American counterparts.
It’s true. I’m American & I agree 💯!!!!
Our hoarders are so entitled & absolute nightmares to deal with.
And somehow their hoards are just a bit tidier than American hoards.

A lot of people who hoard end up specifically looking for discounts, they'll buy from outlet stores or thrift stores just to get more and more things.

George is a darling man ! He was so helpful and kind. True gentleman.
Even if it is a lonliness issue, responding to that by hoarding is a mental health issue.
