      They spent so much money making it and maintaining it is also expensive from the basic hotel maintenance as well as paying the actors
      Pair that with only 100 rooms and they were practically forced to make it expensive if they wanted to break even on it

    I think people underestimate the roadblock Disney put in place by not allowing direct reservations from their website. We are huge Star Wars and Disney fans. We've stayed at almost every Disney World hotel, and went least 5 or 6 times in the last year, but the place was running for at least 6 months before I even realized it was open. I could find cost on the site, but even that was a pain and there was no way to book. No where that said you couldn't just book online like every other vacation destination in the last 10 or 15 years. We kept waiting for it to be open to the public, would look every couple of months, but it never did.
    Sure, this would probably have been easy if we were willing to use a travel agent, but we shouldn't have to. If Disney doesn't care enough to open it up for easy booking to regular visitors, why should we care enough to go?

      Disney should have targeted legacy Star Wars fans, and it would have been a success. If Darth Vader or the Mandalorian were part of the experience, it would have been amazing. If it was priced at the same price point as an actual cruise, then I think it would have made more sense and been profitable but it definitely was overpriced. For $1200 per guest per night I could stay at a 5-star hotel in a major city and eat a 6-course meal for every meal. Or even if you want to compare it to an actual cruise ship, you can go on high end cruises for $1200 per night per ROOM for a balcony suite and that includes all your food, entertainment, amenities, etc. It was just overpriced for what you were getting.

Park tickets extra. No immersion in story. Again Disney has value, moderate and deluxe options depending on what is affordable for you. This was high end and unique. That is reality in our stratified society. I wish everyone could experience first class everything but we would have to build a different world for that.

      @Skye_Writer Рік тому

      Totally agree. All this immersive interactivity was SUPPOSED to be in Galaxy's Edge, but then the locked it up in an underground bunker behind that paywall you mentioned. The average Star Wars fan and the die-hard SW fans were pissed that the SW "land" we were promised turned out to be a shopping mall. We thought we were going to get the SW version of the Wizarding World, you know, something that had more than 2 rides (one of which doesn't work half the time), an icee stand, a sausage cart, and a casual dining space. Where were the characters we knew and loved, the ones we used to get during Star Wars weekends? Where were the wandering aliens and droids? Where was the ride-on alien mount we were promised? Honestly, they put more into Pandora than they did to Galaxy's Edge.
      And then they said, Hey remember that experience we promised you? Here it is...but you gotta pay more than a cruise for it. Come on in!
      But the average SW fan doesn't have that kind of money. Even most of the diehards like me don't have that kind of money. And Disney always, always, always was wrong to set GE in the sequel era. (Poseidon Entertainment's channel has a great vid on how and why GE should be re-themed away from the sequels).
      This was just never something I was going to spend the price of a used car on, even if I could have come up with that kind of money.

    Disney priced themselves out. We were just in Orlando last month and spent $1600 for a 1 week vacation at Universal Studios. That’s including park tickets for all 3 parks with park hopping and staying at the Cabana Bay hotel.
    The one day that we went to MK was the worst experience we’ve ever had. Pirates and Haunted mansion were down more than half the day, the park was easily the most crowded we’ve ever seen, even before Covid and the wait times for everything was over an hour.

Disney World is one of the most famous theme parks on the planet. It's not the 90s anymore, if you go you are competing for space with rich tourists from everywhere from Germany to China to Australia, etc. I went a few times as a kid, and honestly I've just accepted I'll never go again, it's not worth it. Go to any of the other Disney parks in the world if you want the Disney brand specifically, I've read that it's actually cheaper if you plan ahead to go to places like Disney Tokyo or Disney Paris from the US than it is to spend a week at Disney World, it'd definitely be cheaper than going to this Star wars immersion.

    One of my relatives works at the Cruiser. I was down there just a month ago and at that time he mentioned another angle not covered in this video. His complaint was about the marketing. See, we’re a Disney family, MK opened a month after I was born, several relatives of mine it’s the only employer they’ve ever had. One uncle just retired - started working there at age 18 in the 70s. I’ve visited the parks dozens of times and I’ve never even lived in Florida. So when I asked my cousin “what’s that?” when he told me where he was working, he was annoyed. He said one issue is wealthy people booking stays and not realizing it’s an immersive geek-fest. They just see the price and assume it’s some great resort. They show up and want nothing to do with the immersive stuff. You can treat it like a hotel but if you’re looking for a great resort with typical resort features, this isn’t it! It’s crazy to me that they built all this, I love Disney AND Star Wars, and had no idea this existed. The failure was probably able to be corrected. It must have been insanely expensive to operate if that was the price point needed. Then you find out that you're kinda shoehorned into having limited access to Hollywood Studios when they feel like letting you in, shouldn't be forcing every guest to not have access to the park it's attached to when it comes with a ridiculous premium price. Lastly, it's a one-time experience for the most part, for the few people it not only appealed to but could also afford it, there's pretty much no reason to go back unless you wanted to try new food or dining options.

      @Adam Efimoff you're not wrong. It's very hard to separate price from this issue as that has been the main reason that stopped people from giving the experience a try. I have family and friends who I'm sure would have loved this but couldn't afford to go.
      Side note: everything has some kind of cost to it. So yeah - we're always making choices on what we're going to do with what we have available to us. Though I'm not sure people fully understood what this particular option was. It wasn't the same thing as laying about in some hotel - no matter where it is located.

The pricing and the era of the story they chose sunk this from the beginning.

You don't need all the check-in people or the baggage handlers etc. Have like a 30 min period in the atrium, have the lieutenant show up etc. Then go to dinner, have the gaya concert. Dinner gets interrupted, have the Kylo/Rey battle. Then give people another hour or so to shop, play around on the bridge or go in the small bar and that's it. They can cut most of the staff that way, a few of the characters etc. They might only be able to do 2 shows a day this way but I think it could be a way to save it to some extent and if the dinner is somewhat reasonable priced it could be way more popular.

The cast members were amazing at what they did and one of the sajas really sold the trip for me as real, I was in the outdoor simulator and stacking some rocks when she came in and talked to me for 20 mins, before instructing me to hold my hand out and think about some things, the rocks all fell and pulled toward me. I’m sure it’s magnets but it felt so real and special. I am devastated to learn that they are closing it instead of reevaluating the base price. I recently went to the Disneyland after dark Star Wars nite and granted, that’s a very different experience, but I had an amazing time and really felt like I got my money’s worth. It’s not immersive in the same way but getting to hear Star Wars music everywhere, meet some of my favorite characters, try some really cool food, see an awesome fireworks show, and the general ambiance of everyone all dressed up with their lightsabers was really cool. Plus you also get to actually be in the park and ride rides and stuff. I think if they brought a Star Wars nite to Orlando it would be much more popular than this hotel/cruise/whatever was

    Now if they took this concept and completely themed out one of the Disney cruise ships to be immersive for week long cruise, just without a long backstory. Guest could wander throughout the cruise ship and do the activities they want or not, eat in different themed restaurants, adults can go to the cantina for cocktails, characters can wander throughout the ship without needing a backstory, little staged interactions can happen when two characters cross paths which guest will enjoy watching. Etc etc. And the pricing would be cruise prices that are on a scale based on your room choice.

If I go to Disney, I want to visit the parks, not sit in a hotel for 2 days, regardless of how cool some of the activities are! I doubt if I would have wanted to go even if it was priced to what I could pay!!

  • @themissourimadman
    @themissourimadman Рік тому +3

    It should have been based on the whole Star Wars universe vs just the sequel movies, many older people with expendable income want to see the Star Wars characters they grew up with not the new ones. They could have put in more rooms and made it a hotel with less shows and actors, cast members could have dressed the part and acted the part and that would have been enough with the addition of tossing in a couple of droids and possibly a dinner show for those willing to attend and or course pay for a character dinner. There's a dislike of the new Star Wars by many fans and I feel that as well as pricing caused it's failure, they could have also included the other movies and maybe had days or weeks where they switch between old and new Star Wars.

    The issue was the price. $1200 per person per night, family of 4 = $9600 for only 2 days! That is way more expensive than one pays to go on a 7 day cruise or a resort.
    The common folk, were priced out of this.

    • @Saviorsrdenver
      @Saviorsrdenver Рік тому

      No. This wasn't the cost - a family of four with one 'Kid' as defined by Disney paid 6000 dollars *total* , or about 750 per person per night. Expensive, yes, but not *that* expensive. (Incidentally, four adults would be 6150.)
      ...which is a major part of the problem. Disney fumbled the ball on communicating the actual price and what you're getting for that price so badly that these inflated runaway numbers keep getting repeated and exaggerated. In five years when this gets talked about people are going to claim it cost 10K a person for a standard cabin you had to share with whoever you were assigned or something equally ridiculous.

      For the common family, this was way over priced and was a big part of the problem!

I loved the LARP aspect of this and wouldn't have been anywhere near as excited to do this had it been a run-of-the-mill Star Wars themed hotel. I hope they do something like a day long roleplay experience where guests can come aboard the Halcyon for an abridged 8-12 hour experience that mirrors the Starcruiser now. Maybe they can add multiple storylines from various eras to help broaden the audience/appeal to more old school fans.

That said, we could only go because of an influx of memory-making money and wouldn’t have prioritized this kind of spend over a different Disney experience normally. Everything was done really well, and as a fan of Star Wars through side ventures and stories, I was happy to explore this corner of the galaxy. I can see how it wouldn’t be for everyone, and the cost is very prohibitive. I hope it becomes something equally exciting but more doable cost-wise.

    The mere fact the hotel, let alone Galaxy’s Edge, wasn’t modeled of the Jedi Temple or even Mos Esly for Galaxy’s Edge, and contained things from the entire Star Wars universe was a good indicator of just how much logic was used and how aware Disney is of their own fanbase, what they want and what they like.

    Pretty simple explanation really. Disney wasn't making the margins they thought they would. The overhead for paying all of the actors, etc. was probably ok with guests paying full price. But they overestimated demand for this offering at full price.
    Demand destruction is a real thing and the available market for this was limited. So they will repurpose this space into something without all of the overhead and make money on it.

    The mistake was combining a hotel stay with a dinner theater. They are very different in nature. Most people paying that kind of bread for a hotel want a lot of amenities, things like tennis, golf, pools, spa, high-end restaurants. For a dinner theater, people want a decent meal but a really fun experience for a few hours (not a few days). Disney would have been better off going with the dinner theater experience, with all the cast members from the various movies, lots of action and excitement, guest interaction, and merch sales. That may have worked for a reasonable price.
