I just started running long distances a few months ago... so I’m new to all this stuff. Formally played a lot of 🏀. I was completely missing this concept. Like today, on a 16 mile run I hit a wall at 10 miles because I was in threshold most of that run. Thanks for explaining the benefits of dialing back the long run.
Good lesson to learn for sure, and glad this helped. It's a tough concept to trust but running slower on your long runs will make you faster and build your aerobic base way stronger. Good luck in your training!
Great point Tyler. Definitely something that is effective to include in long runs. I don't always do this as sometimes athletes can push too hard for the tempo portion and never fully recover during the run, which ultimately reduces the aerobic benefit, but when executed well is really beneficial. Great point.....thanks!
@@legacyenduranceinc71 Where does knowledge from? Experience so after 60 years of running here's some advice; One: run with zero drop shoes, no heel height (but not barefoot shoes) make sure you have cushioning. Two: don't run any further than 6 miles 3 times a week. Three: don't time yourself. Four: don’t do marathons. Five: the important one don’t join a running club; the reason, you’ll end up ignoring 2, 3 and 4. If that happens you’ll end up like me and 90% of other club runners, requiring new knees because your cartilage will be gone. Another bit of advice just ignore the above and get a bike. All these people promoting long distance what age are they?
This is exactly what I'm looking for. I've been scouring the internet for ages until I found this. Subbed.
This explanation was so incredibly helpful! Thank you for sharing this!
Hey Heather. Glad it was helpful. Happy Running!
Thanks your tip start training to boston
You're welcome! Good luck in your training!

Very interesting points there, thank you for sharing!
The FOD Runner My pleasure. Thanks for watching. 😎👍🏻
If I am trying to run a sub 4 hr marathon and train in the 65 to 75% zone I will be running a 6 hr marathon. I am lost.
I’m in this camp as well... 🤨
thank you.. like it 🌹🌹
My pleasure. Thanks for watching!
I have a question. So how can I lower my HR when it's increasing slowly over time? Can I walk?
What about Long Runs that include purposeful tempos? Say you want to throw in a 3-6k tempo, usually a bit faster than your marathon or HM pace.

Ive been doing some slow runs as advised, but my Garmin training status is unproductive as my VO2Max is going backwards due to the slow aerobic runs?
My max heart rate is 200.is that very bad?
Don't listen to anyone under 65 giving you tips on running.
That's a very narrow mindset to have my friend. Age does not always trump knowledge.
