BEST Arturia Keylab Set up! - How to Map Midi Channels in FL Studio

  • I found this setting recently and dove deep into setting it up with my Aturia Keylab Essential 49. I'm really excited to share this.
    Let me know what you think in the comments!
    MCC Template:
    drive.google.com/drive/folder...
    The setting in FL studio will work with any midi controller that has channel capabilities (pretty much any newer controller). Its also very helpful if you have multiple controllers.
    I believe this is the BEST program for the Arturia Keylab Essential 49.
    I will make another video going in depth on my template set up so you only have to do this once, which will also show how my mixer is set up.

    Thank you for the precious info!
    Pretty useful discovery while assigning channels one at a time: If you assign desired channel, then right click on it, and then you can assign the desired channel to other pads, knobs etc. Just right click, and then -> copy value to other pads, buttons, knobs. Saves time! :)

    Hey NoRoots, thanks for the video. It's great to see the MCC interface it explains a great deal - much appreciated. My understanding is that if so set the channel at the daw track the channel you set at the DAW will map to your user map (so to speak) this then is the default for all. So the idea as I understand it is if you then don't want a fader, pad, switch or knob to be on that channel you then choose that other channel for that action (ie: fader to channel 2 so you can change a different plugin parameter on channel 2). So the step of changing each to channel 10 in this example was unnecessary if you set that at the DAW track for instrument. Now in saying that your video certainly answered a question that the manual for the Keylab Essentials did not. That being that you can have your switches, faders and knobs on different channels to the keybed. My idea is that I would like to control an FX unit from knobs and faders on a different channel - in other words have an effect in a bus. What you've done here is very good - please do another video as soon as possible please. I'd like to see if you could have the keyboard split. Say 2 octaves to one plugin on Channel 1 with half the faders and knobs; the other octaves to channel 2 with remaining half the knobs and faders that kind of thing. Because if this Essentials can do that - it would be a cert for my black friday list!

    • @ean2009
      @ean2009  3 роки тому

      Hello thanks for watching and the thoughtful reply.
      I dont know if I fully understand what you mean about how its unnecessary to set things to a different channel. Are you saying that locking a vst in FL Studio to a certain channel as I did makes all controls I would map to it automatically in that channel?
      Also, on the note with the midi user channel. That's how I started this setup until I realized i can use the user channels, I feel like there is more control that way.
      On the question about splitting the keyboard by channel, this isn't exactly possible, but you can achieve a similar result with a different approach.
      You can limit the keyboard input from the FL studio wrapper settings, the same way you could set a root note, just left click and drag to set the limit of input, and do this for both instruments youd like to control. And then for faders you could set them to different channels

      @@ean2009 Its no problem I have that answered now. What I meant was can you have half the knobs and faders on one channel and the other half on a different channel - it appears that you can. The importance here is to have them on separate channels. As I have the aim on having 4 fader and 4 knobs managing one plugin and the others another plugin on a different Midi Channel. It's ok I have the answer, its all good thanks!! great video and thanks for doing it - it was the best first look that I've seen. And quite practical. :)

I think I got the gist of what you were explaining but I think you mentioned that you may remake the video which could be very helpful to me. I use Studio One but I believe I can navigate from how you explained it in FL. It would be helpful to have a camera a bit closer 2 the key lab. As you were switching midi channels on the keylab I wasn't quite sure how you were doing that. This mapping video can be very important do a lot of people definitely me. thank you for doing this!im shocked how bad arturia is when it comes to anything relating to other companies. like fl studio. its so much work just to get basic functionality! this is not for impatient beginners,like me. i am actually sorry i bought this. and wont buy arturia ever again. its just not worth the hassle. hardware is quite nice,tho. but since the interwebs are home to some really awesome human beings,i can get help to fix the issues im not smart enough to fix myself! and i am very grateful. THANK YOU!
    the customer "support" they offer is even worse than 3rd party software integration. i got my essential 49 on wednesday,last week. i still cant use it properly,like advertised. and "support" not supporting their products.
    i just hope most people are able to get an arturia that works as intended. also,the analog lab stuff is solid.
    its obvious that arturia know very well what quality is,and how to produce it. thats why this is infuriating.
    if not for heros like Ean (yes i see him as a HERO,an evertday hero),people like wouldnt even have hope of getting it to work.
    random people online contribute so much,and usually for free! i have so much love and respect for everyone who helps people they dont even know,for free. guys like this are making pc gaming what it is,and also the midi controller community. and i noticed it is usually the smaller channels that are most helpful. at around 200k subs,channels start focusing on making enough money to live off of. and that hurts the quality,of course. so many times i have unsubbed a channel when it gets larger/worse,and find a smaller channel with the proper focus.
    merry christmass,to all!

    • @dr3wjain
      @dr3wjain Рік тому +1

      It's actually quite the opposite of what you believe. It's not that Arturia has bad support with other programs, it's that the config for MIDI that is used by FL studio simply happens to be very different from every other DAW's. Most other DAWs use Mackie control for their Midi devices whereas FL studio uses a proprietary algorithm. Unfortunately, like you, I too wasn't fully aware of how bad the support of this keyboard would be with FL studio, if I did, I would've probably gone with the M-Audio Oxygen keyboard.

    tell me bro, Can the main knob in the middle of the keyboard be of any value in FL studio ? and what buttons are compatible with Fl studio, i heard some don't work, hope that's not true

    • @ean2009
      @ean2009  3 роки тому

      Hey, So the middle knob doesn't do much in FL Studio right now. You can use it with the Arturia vsts when you are on the "Analog Lab" Midi Map AND the VST is set to the same midi port that you have the controller on.
      There is a convenient extra setting that makes this less annoying, because without this setting in place, no matter what channel you have focused it will play the VST you linked to the port. It involved midi channels.
      Also, as for the DAW Controls, only about half of them work as expected, but they are the important ones. Play, pause, stop, record all work. The top set dont work like you would want.

      @@JVJF7 yes this is the most annoying thing. I see you saw my other response, so that's the fix. Make sure all the arturia stuff is updated to newest patch

    everything is working in this keys in fl studio? I mean all functions?

    • @ean2009
      @ean2009  3 роки тому

      Unfortunately alot of the DAW controls don't work properly. at least the major ones work (Play, stop, record, save) And the Arturia buttons and big middle knob only work with Arturia plugins being properly configured. (With a huge caveat that you could get it all to do anything you want with midi scripting - but out the box that is the situation)
      The main features of the keyboard all work great tho (the keys and the midi knobs)

    Your template on google drive doesn't work at all unfortunately. Instead of all the templates in the video, it's just one called "Best KeyLab Setup" with the default settings.
    It's alright tho, I'll do it manually now, this is the last thing I'm gonna try to get this piece of shit to work. After that I'll either install and learn Ableton or sell it.
    To everyone who doesn't care about a mediocre keybed but better FL integration: Get a Novation LaunchKey Mk3. Pretty much plug-n-play.
