My trigger 39 sump is a similar set up. Only issue I see is maybe use acrylic on top of the crate w more spread out flow holes so the water covers the entire pad like trigger does.. great diy
I’m setting up a freshwater sump and this is the perfect solution to a sock. And most sumps come with those and I didn’t want to deal with them. Thank you!!!!!!
I'm totally with you I stopped using filter socks months ago I run all trickle filter sumps Walmart cotton. Plus when you're running a monster skimmer there's no need for the filter socks
Hate filter socks!! Pain every couple of days! Just made myself some DIY filter cups! Might have to add the floss like this on top of the tray as well!
I run no socks or filter pads because I'm struggling to keep nitrates up. Between corals and chaeto they eat it up. Fyi Lifereef sumps use filter pads as well
I will tell you this without the filter socks the sump is loud because the water splashes down. But I dont mind it.. I like the sound of the water but a lot of people these days want silent tanks.
@@SCReefer Is it the same stuff just diff names? I went into home depot server hardwares asking for it one time. Egg what? never head of that. Oh you mean ceiling light grates or what ever. Did farmers use this to put crates of eggs on? No one seems to know what that means except here and maybe Bulk Reef. I found stuff that looks like it but its not egg crates but works the same.
It's still working well for me...After a water change I put the socks in and the filter pad on top and the water becomes crystal clear. People even told me the keep the filter socks in and a filter pad in top. And that replace the socks one a week and the filter pad twice a week and there water is much clearer....
Great idea if the filter pads could be reused and recycled. It is a horrible idea to use them and toss them, because that is horrible for the environment since nano plastics are ending up in our food and bodies because the nano-plastics are not breaking down.

That would work, I did notice my skimmer is picking up a lot more darker skimmate. Thanks for stopping by.

Add some lava rock to lower compartment for more benefits

This is true Rob, I did notice my skimate darker.
The roller filter I make has no noise and last for months, but that is a nice diy!
Ray's Reefing ..I always had my eye on one of those. Maybe in the near future.

Great video and diy. I just need to try mine only on a larger scale.
I hope it works out for you.
I just bought two acrylic media holders from marine depot and fill them with filter floss, they fit right in the sock holders, might even be easier!
T Surro..I will have to look into that. Thanks, for the information.
Or use filter cups for carbon or other media..
you said you replace the foam every few days? that would be quite an expense
Sometimes I'll rinse it out and put it back in.
Can this sump be used on a freshwater tank?
Nice DIY mod! I like it, great work👍🏻
Thanks buddy! I hate filter scocks.
Definitely easier than dealing with filter socks
Try turning you pad white side up it will catch everything
What’s up Chris. Hope all is well. Great idea
Still working well. new video soon.
Looks like it works really good cool DIY
Thanks!!!!

Greatly appreciate the comment, I will have to check out lifereef.
Does the chaeto catch all the detritus & big food?
How's it running still? And how often have you had to change?
Working well, i feed heavy so i change it 2X a week.
@@SCReefer I'm torn between getting media cups with filter floss stuffing or doing this method?

Cool hack! Fiji cube has an basket now included with their sumps looks like they had the hobbyist in mind.
Well done
It funny i was thinking about doing this right before i clicked on this video
So far so good, it's been working really well. Easy to replace and no more washing socks. Best conversion I ever did.
Hey Cody, did you make the change.
@@SCReefer I have done the changes to the sump; but I do not have filter floss yet so I'm still running socks till the floss arrives
You can also buy the filter cups and fill with floss.
@@SCReefer I have 7in filter sock on my sump and they dont make filter cups in 7in yet
Why do you call it egg crate when no store calls it that? It looks like stuff used for ceilings for vents or maybe lights.
BLACK POLYSTYRENE EGG CRATE LOUVERS
They also sell it at a bulk reef supply.

good job I'm going to do it in my eshopps sump

@@SCReefer I'm going to try is a good idea too
Very nice..
How much noise does it make now?
Just a little when the water falls through the filter pad.
Good video!
Thanks for the support!!!
Looks like 1/4 of the pad will be filtering…
As it fills up with debris, it moves forward until the entire filter pad is covered...
@@SCReefer that makes much more sense. Thx
Nice idea
Thanks, Jerry!!
Nice mod!
Thanks, buddy!

I make them cheaper than you think!
