I run 100 micron socks. I change them out on Sunday and Wednesday, when I do my water changes. I have something like 24 of these socks. I keep a 5-gal bucket with water and bleach. My sump uses 3 socks, so I am swapping out 6 filter socks every week. When I can't put any more socks in the bucket I run it through the washer a couple times. When done, I run the washer one more time with hot water and bleach to be sure the washer is clean. I let the clean socks air dry. I try to buy new socks at least once a year.
I’ve been sticking the hose for my sand vacuuming in my filter sock for over 10 years. I have an auto water changing system so I don’t do water changes while I vacuum the sand and realized a long time ago I needed a way to do this while leaving everything running, it’s the last step in my weekly maintenance is to remove the filter sock after this and start with a fresh one
Before spending on another dollar on corals or livestock, if you have a sump, switch to a fleece roller! Game changer. And I understand that many can’t redo their plumbing, so there’s other option such as the Klir fleece roller which I use that go straight into the filter sock chamber. It has totally helped me bring my nutrients down.
thought i knew all there was to filter socks but this video proved me wrong :) i always put carbon in a bag then drop it in my filter socks. never thought that it could grind it up into little pieces. thanks for the tips great vid!
Since us Red Sea owners are stuck paying for double priced socks, it would be great if they (or maybe an awesome MN based reefing gear company....not to name names) could make a less expensive alternative.....and if they do, plugs as well as 4 inch length socks would be awesome.......Just a thought.
#8 I use a mesh sock to collect algae now and then. Put a mesh sock in the sump and run a syphon hose from tank into the sock. Just keep the main pump going and you can pinch off algae to your hearts content.
Filter socks were great until I lost my desire to clean them every 48 hours. Been using fleece roller filters for 6 years now and never looked back. The Thieling Rollermat never failed once. I have replaced it with the Clarisea 5000 but I'm not sure if I will not get a new motor and pinion and go back to the Thieling. 4-6 weeks per roll for Clarisea versus 3-6 months on the Thieling roll. Drawbacks? The Thieling is big and bulky and is difficult to clean without an overnight acidic soaking. Advantages? Twice the filter surface area, easy to load a new roll without using the old roll as a leader, and a safety dump that it directed, not just an overflow. But the Clarisea is so easy to plumb. One straight pipe down with a piece of flex for the 3cm offset. The Thieling needs several elbows and turns. The Clarisea makes less gurgling noises. Both filter the water with extraordinary effectiveness.
I love the concept and I understand the decomposition of organic macromolecules. But honestly, I'm too lazy to use them properly. They work amazingly well, but as you point out: only if used right.
#8 I am hurt I love my mesh filter socks, they are so easy to clean, my wife will not let me use the washing machine anymore, so I clean mine every time they start to overflow. My sump is so much cleaner now.
I've got an over-sized skimmer so I use the mesh filter socks. What they don't get, the skimmer gets, and what the skimmer doesn't get, the fuge gets. Seems to work out pretty well for me.
I used to run them all the time but now I only use them when servicing my tanks. I was having nutrient issues with them. I even toned down on the skimmer usage, running only 20 hours a day. Filter sock and skimming is too hard on the bacterial balance in our tanks.
Use polyfiber in the media cups, not rolled up filter matts. Really inexpensive and a pair of salad tongs to grab out the old & place the new. Very fast, cheap & easy.
I own a cleaning service. And cleaning socks is very easy IMO. I just put them under water in my sink or tub. And use my hand to get everything out then rinse in RO and toss em back in. I have 5 socks and wash about 2 a week or 3 days. Works for me and maybe not everyone. I wash them in bleach bi-monthly
I rather like the mesh socks, while I agree they don't pick up as much stuff as the felt sock, they are super easy to clean out. Throw them into the wash? HA! Just run them under a faucet for a minute and they'll be dry by the end of the day.
I'm all about the mesh socks. I have 3 on my sump, and I just pull one per day on a rotation and rinse it out under the sink. Takes like 2 minutes. Sure, it doesn't filter as well as felt, but I'm also much more likely to keep them clean on schedule since they're so much easier.
Cheers guys. Man, where can I buy them for $3 bucks each? 😜 I also made the mistake when I built my custom acrylic sump to make the recessed sock holes for the 4” Vertex filter socks (same size as Red Sea’s ). Not realizing they’re slightly smaller then BRS brand and all other 4” filter socks on the market.
Also remember that just like felt, mesh socks come in varying microns. I have a 50 micron mesh that is like Gandalf. Nothing passes i have to clean it every 2 days. Think i need to go up some microns.
I just had mine overflow this morning thank God it was a slow spill wasn't as bad as it could have been. But it was my fault I had the overflow opened too much so the pressure was too high causing spillage on the side from the clogged filter sock. Wouldn't have been an issue of I had my overflow pipe set to a slower flow and my return pump not on max power
I love my 100 micron mesh socks... Filter well enough to clog 3 of them within 4 -5 days, so I change them every 3-4... Washing them is a breeze... Can never go back to felt

I wasn’t a fan of the waterbox filter socks. Not sure if they’re available in Australia, but there’s some components made for modifying waterbox aquariums. I replaced the filter sock on my with a Intank media basket, then just use several layers of sponge filter. The media basket did cost more than the filter socks. But should only be that one time cost instead of buying replacement socks. The media basket that I got did require cutting out the supports out of the tank that held the filter sock plate.
I rotate the socks with the dirty socks soaked in bleached for 2 days and then rinse with a dechlorinator sodium thiosulfate used for freshwater chlorine removal.

I'm sure that I'm missing something, but wouldn't a filter sock holder situated above the waterline pretty much fix any problems with its use? Meaning suspending the sock outside of the water, but situated so the return water still runs through them. This way, the rotting matter inside of the sock wouldn't get back into the sump and fuel nitratesamd phosphates. Just my thoughts..
I created some kind of table-like insert for the Media Cups that can be 3D printed (Thingiverse look for Red Sea Media Cup) So I do not have to use loads of floss when a little bit goes a loooong way.
