Search and rescue teams have recovered the bodies of two men from the Patapsco River following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, but four others remain missing and are presumed dead. All six victims were immigrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, part of a road crew that was filling potholes on the bridge when a cargo ship ran into one of the bridge supports, causing the entire structure to drop into the water. “The construction workers are absolutely essential,” says Gustavo Torres, executive director of the immigrant rights group CASA, which counted two of the victims as members. “Immigrants face higher injury and death rates … than nonimmigrants, and they are significantly less likely to have insurance.” He says the disaster has highlighted the difficult, often dangerous work done by immigrants in communities across the United States, and calls on political leaders to stop dehumanizing rhetoric. “What we need right now is comprehensive immigration reform. We don’t need more attacks against the immigrant community.”

Thought it should be mentioned that the recovery effort was suspended to start debris removal because the victims are thought to be trapped under the debris and divers are unable to reach the victims until debris is removed, not solely for economic reasons as implied

Not well paid. My husband worked for Martin Marietta for almost 30 years as an operator. Never made even 70 grand no matter how many hours. He finally retired and he I'm so relieved. That's a hard job with very little thanks. 😢

On Wednesday evening, Maryland State Police announced a red pickup truck was found among the underwater wreckage. Inside were two of the trapped victims: 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, from Mexico, and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, from Guatemala. Four others were still missing and presumed dead.
Two of the victims were Mexican nationals, two were from Guatemala, one was from El Salvador and one was from Honduras. All were employed by Brawner Builders.
Never let a crisis go to waste.

1:48 that’s unfair. Officials stated they stopped looking because it’s too dangerous for the divers because of the debris from the bridge. It’s likely their bodies are trapped under the bridge pieces as well as inside their vehicles. They haven’t stopped looking. They won’t stop. They just have to make sure it’s safe for those looking.
