Return To SPIRITBOX! Vocal ANALYSIS of "Jaded" with special guest Phil Freeman of Small Town Titans!

- It has been a few years since I analyzed the one take of Courtney LaPlante of Spiritbox performing "Rule Of Nines". That performance blew me away, and was one of the first times I had ever heard a female vocalist perform harsh vocals. Well, a LOT has changed since then, and this time I'm sitting down with vocalist extraordanaire Phil Freeman to analyze Spiritbox's latest hit.
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff and Phil Freeman of Small Town Titans, as they listens to Spiritbox performing "Jaded" for the first time.

you absolutely need courtney for a tea time!! that conversation would be so cool
Courtney is really sweet from everything I’ve seen.
YES, please! 💜
She'd likely do it too!
Please?!?!
I am SO down for that
What an absolute blast! Thank you so much for the visit Elizabeth!
It's always a blast when we get to have you here with Elizabeth. I bet my ears ended up as red as yours when I finished listening to this on my headphones.
P.F. would you ever consider being a guest singer for a *TYPE-O Negative* reunion?
@@joewat3982 I'll consider it if they give me a call 🤓
Hyped for Courtney to do a one take of this song. She sounds so gnarly on those and this song is full of hidden little moments for her
Their new song Cellar Door is phenomenal. Probably their heaviest song. The chorus is mesmerizing and beautifully brutal. Also, Legion by Tesseract. Probably the best metal vocal performance of the year.
Elizabeth should do the Cellar Door reaction with Will.
Yes to both! Legion was unbelievable.
I've commented many times for her to react to TesseracT. Hopefully, she gets around to it soon now that they've released a new album. Just seen them live last week and was blown away! Legion is incredible.
Celler Door is undoubtedly the heaviest thing since at least Holy Roller, but it has a really spooky vibe too.
probably not the most interesting for a vocal analysis, Jaded showcases the band's diversity better.
The way Courtney is able to just drop in and out of her harsh vocals will never cease to amaze me. One of the best examples is on the one take of Circle With Me, specifically the bridge and outro.
OMG Phil is such an intense listener! You should absolutely bring him on more often. Also, Spiritbox is love. Spiritbox is life. ❤
I adore Courtney and I love Spiritbox. She is just so effortless in every aspect. She has pop star level performances and seems to just be enveloped by her music. Her vocals seem effortless even at their highest or harshest. It’s mesmerizing. The production of their music is so well-planned and thought through but feels so interesting and organic. They push boundaries and mix mediums and styles so well. And then they can do every single little thing live as well as, if not better, than they do in studio. They are simply incredible.
Yes, tea time with Courtney please! I think the one take of Circle With Me is still the best performance to really see Courtney’s ability and everyone NEEDS to watch it to really appreciate the control and power she has with her vocals. If you want goosebumps, you’ll get them there.
Saw them live a couple weeks ago, opening for Shinedown. Courtney's clean-harsh-clean transitions are unreal, and the fact that she manages to do them live is astounding.
The roles should have been reversed. Shinedown should be opening for them.
@@breadnaut I get that you don't like Shinedown's genre.. but Brent Smith has an absolute powerhouse of a voice, and they've busted their asses over the years to get to where they are today. I absolutely love both bands, but don't see why you need to put one down to highlight the other. Spiritbox is still a growing band, and tours like this do a tremendous service for them in the form of exposure and widening their fanbase.
I went to this concert in Arkansas. I couldn't get over how all of the vocalists sounded just like they do in studio recordings. Her vocal flexibility is astounding.
I mentioned it in live chat, but Circle With Me is absolutely a song you need to hear. She’s even done a one take of it already!
The one take - ua-cam.com/video/zMnfkW9UZc4/v-deo.html
Her fast switching at the end between clean and harsh is amazing.
@@LordNelsonkmyeah that makes the one take the far superior version.
100%!!!!!! I've been saying this too
@@LordNelsonkm and that's how she does it live, too.
Daniel Braunstein is a music wizard who is producing their EP singles. He specialized in spatial audio which is probably why the vocals sound unique. I am really hyped for the EP all together been a fan since Holy Roller release.
Just saw them in concert again. They are killing it right now. Glad i met Courtney back in her IWABO days.
Elizabeth this is important!!! My wife just walked in and seeing Phil, she instantly said "this guy looks like Szeth son son vallano!". Now you can't unsee it either, congratulations!!
Guy heard Courtney all the way from Urithiru lmao
I love this dude! He seems like a guy that would be a blast to hang out with. Such talent and character!
They’re for sure dating
I don't listen to harsh vocals like I used to when I was hugely into death metal 10+ years ago, but Spiritbox are just so wonderful to listen to daily. Courtney's voice is intoxicating.
Easily my fav song by them. The “soaring” chorus to the bouncy second verse with the harsh vocals is just👌🏽
I love the fact that when you hear her sing the melodic lyrics, she is screaming it in the background alittle bit delayed. Sounds amazing!
The underlying thing to all of the best Spiritbox songs is that - whether it be smooth and clean like The Void or Secret Garden, or disgustingly caveman brutal heaviness like Holy Roller - there’s always an underlying groove/bounciness.
I always loved how wearing headphones can give you the directional sound experience. Shout out to composers.
courtney’s style of doing harsh vocals has always been so impressive to me. the melodic screams she does where she goes in and out/combines cleans with harsh vocals flows so well with the melody of the songs. it’s so unique and enhances her diction. it’s a lot easier to hear the lyrics without having to look them up.
Absolutely love the dynamic between Elizabeth and Phil, so good! Great video, I love getting to discover new groups here!
Just saw them open up for Papa Roach and Shinedown. They are incredible live. Her vocals are amazing
Glad to see Phil here. Fun and nice guy. Also a superb singer.
Nice video.
Glad you enjoyed it
For all the talk of how good AI is today, I'm blown away it took this long for the youtube algorithm to recommend this channel to me! Absolutely loving the content and spending hours going through your archives looking for analyses of songs I've adored for years. I appreciate how you consider the interplay between the music and the visual presentation in videos and would love to get your take on Woodkid's Run Boy, Run. For my money, it's the best music video ever produced!
Welcome aboard!
Courtney is one of the best. Highly recommend her one-take sing through of Circle with Me, shows her incredible range between harsh and clean vocals.
If you’ve never seen her live, you are missing out big time! First time I heard them was live and was blown away! So much energy and vocals still perfect!
You two are funny and great together! Wonderful insights! Hats 🎩 off to you both!
What’s amazing about Courtney is how easily you can understand what lyrics she’s saying when she’s screaming.
This is the exact reason why my wife loves this band and she HATES screaming music.
Courtney La Plante and Tatiana Shmayluk are levels above the elite.
Spiritbox is a good spooky season band, especially if you listen to stuff from the first EP.
I've been desperate for you to do more Spiritbox, they've got such a good library you could really dig into. Please get Courtney for a Tea Time if you can I'd love that, she's one of my favourites right now!
Spiritbox is amazing Courtney LaPlante has a unique vocal style producing this explosive performance with analysis done superbly by the two of you❤
Phil's face is my reaction every time. Great breakdown of the performance.
Holy shit, his perfect pitch analysis was amazing. I've never seen somebody be able to do it that quickly.
It's not even a matter of "quickly." Pitch is just there. It's instant. You hear a sound, you hear its pitch. And if you're a singer (or even if not) you can then reproduce the pitch with your voice. Try it! It's fun!
@@ericpeterson7512 True, I've never attempted to sing but humming the pitch is easy to me
I love the guests Elizabeth gets! Now I get two perspectives on the song. Double the goodness!
Thank you! My pick for song of the year! 10/10
It just got nominated for a Grammy. I hope it wins.
Just listened to Small Town Titans and am now a fan!
I love this band so much !!! This is the best discovery of my year
Thank you for always having fun and being passionate
Both of you together crates the perfect musical review hosts. Great chemistry for a TV show. This was not only very informational but super fun to watch.
Mike's riffin, Courtney's dancin in her own lil world. It's such a good riff.
This is my first time listening to Spiritbox -- I especially liked the clean vocals and the drops. It was fun (and educational) to hear Elizabeth & Phil's reaction and analysis. Thank you!
It's has come to my attention that you have not reacted to Breaking Benjamin yet, so I would like to humbly request that you consider them. The Diary of Jane is probably their most well known song, although my personal favorite of theirs is Evil Angel. Benjamin Burnley may not be a very fancy singer, but the emotion he puts into his music really hits home.
Phil has an incredible ear. Love his vocal discipline and insights
I hope you do more collabs with him in the future. It was a really informative reaction from you guys
You guys make quite the combo. This video was enjoyable and insightful through and through.
It looked like you two where enjoying yourselves a lot!! I do love this song as well. Great video!! 🤘🤘🤘
This was SO satisfying. Phil listens just like you. You just get each other.
Elizabeth, PLEASE critique more STT, especially 9-5. It's so good ❤
YEEEESSS! So excited when you react to Spiritbox!! They are easily becoming one of my favorite bands, made my day with this one :)
For anyone who needs help remembering filter names (there are multiple names for each filter which makes it pretty confusing if you're not used to working with them a lot). A high pass filter and a low cut are basically the same thing. You can remember it as: It's allowing the highs to "pass" through the filter, meaning that you will hear the highs, but the lows are not allowed to pass. A "lo-cut" means that you are "cutting" the lows. It's the same principle with a low pass filter or high cut filter. You are allowing the lows to "pass" through the filter meaning you will hear them, and you can also describe this process as "cutting" the highs. It's basically describing the same process from the perspective of either the highs or the lows. Loved the video!
Thanks! Love your content!
Spiritbox is Awesome! Best new band in quite a while for me.. Absolutely Love Them!
We all need more female vocalists in this genre!!❤
Blessed Be will always be my favorite go-to song by Spiritbox.
Love the Spiritbox vids. She has such a unique mix of pretty and fierce vocals. Also want to recommend Dance Gavin Dance's "The Ghost of Billy Royalton." Y'all will enjoy.
I got to hear them live, and this was the opening song!! It was amazing live!
I need to know you're aware of Daniel Thompkins!
lol he's incredible and his band just put out a new album a month ago. The song "Legion" by the band TesseracT is my top recommendation for you.
Legion is soooo good.
I have the honour of coaching Courtney and so I'm loving this appreciation "fest" for her epic talent & technical prowess! ⚔
I had the honor to see them live (Architects as headliner, Amsterdam Jan 26th)) and I was blown away......
I love Courtney’s voice. Whether she’s screaming or singing she’s a treat to listen to!
Hope you’ll look into the band Lutharo some day, specifically their song Lost In A Soul. They’re a great up and coming band and everything they’ve put out ends up on my playlist. I promise they’ll make you a fan if you give them a listen!🤘🏻🤘🏻
Yes! Lutharo is so good! I hope she checks them out someday
@@noamstraus2109 I keep recommending them as much as possible, but them not being as much of a household name it probably wouldn’t get as many views, even though they are deserving to be heard!
Fun fact, every song on this ep flows together which is why the ending goes on like that, super cool how they did it. I love this band so much
Thanks to both of you for this fun reaction! I hope to see you cover more Spiritbox soon! I would love to see a tea time with you and Courtney too!
I'm so happy I was introduced to this band. Courtney's vocals in this song when she is really letting it go and screaming her heart out remind me so much of another female vocalist I love, Maria Brink from IN THIS MOMENT. Maria has a raw emotional sound like this in so many of her songs. I love the rawness in both their voices, but what I truly appreciate here is Christina's ability to not only distort her voice so much and also able to have such a clear poppish sound to it as well.
She sounded so great live this year as well doing this song. It was amazing to hear!
I discovered Spiritbox not so many time ago and I have to say that they seem incredible. It's like a mix between styles. Is like a mixture of metal , industrial music , with more clean vocals like pop of soft rock.. I really like it
Hey Elizabeth, I've been enjoying your videos for a while now. You have a great appreciation for music. Being a lover of music for a long time and being a vocalist myself it's giving me greater appreciation and inspiration for the art. Thank you!
Cheers from Limerick, Ireland \m/
It'd be a long video but I think it'd be so cool to check out their live recording of the Mara Effect trilogy, it's such a top tier Spiritbox performance imo
Yesssss Jaded!! Incredible song, probably my favorite by spiritbox so far.
The special guest rocks! Wanna see more of this cooperation
First time I heard them was live with Ghost in Green Bay. Was so awesome!
Phil is AMAZING guest. Was really fun and intersting to watch and listen
Just hopping on because you just have to hear the voice of one of, if not the most underrated and forgotten voices of modern times. Terence Trent Darby. He left the music industry in the UK in the late 80's after being disillusioned by it but continues to create amazing music abroad to this day largely unknown.
Wishing Well, Dance little sister and Sign your name ,are just some of theamazing 80s songs by this incredible artist
A fellow Pennsylvanian! I grew up in York county, not far from York. So nice to see a local guy collaborating with one of my favorite UA-camrs!
Courtney for tea time!!
Absolutely!! That would be epic!!
👍🏻👍🏻🔥🔥🤘🏻🤘🏻🌹🌹
I want so bad to watch you do a full listen through each song before going back and doing a break down, because watching your reactions are just as precious, and they always end when you pause to review a section. PLEASE do a video where you watch the entire song so we can watch your reactions the whole time, then dig into the gritty details on the second listen!!!
I like that idea. I love these videos, but if I have one critique, it's that there are almost too many pauses and rewinds, where we hear the same part 6 or 8 times. I do like very much that you rewind a bit with every pause.
I like what Julia Nilon does. She reacts purely through her first listen, pausing and rewinding a fair amount with some comment. Then in post she types the technical breakdown in notes on the screen. Like you can see her having the thought, but she doesn't say it in the moment--she gives us a little thought bubble of her detailed analysis. It also gives her time to gather her thoughts and express then cogently. It's a stylistic thing, and wouldn't work for everyone. But it provides a way to give an emotional reaction with fewer interruptions, then layer on the analysis in post.
I love these videos though. They're some of the best on UA-cam. It's cool having Phil around. My drummer's name is Phillip Nathaniel Eubanks--he goes by Phillthy Phill Nathaniel.
Lots of lovely ambiance filling in the sound here.
I love how your analysis is so clearly sharpened by listening to metal music, how much you are thinking about layering and harshness and distorsion, while still being clearly focused on technique and sound. This is why I (as a meh-oll fan) keep coming back 🙂
First EP or album with Josh Gilbert (ex- As I Lay Dying) on bass. I've heard that he has been singing some of the cleans in their concerts.
I would love to hear that. Such a good addition to the band.
This was awesome!! Thank you for the huge compliments for Courtney. Next, I hope everyone jumps on and suggests Temperance.
Did you mean Constance? Or is Temperance a name of another band?
Get goosebumbs from the song. Saw themmlive a few months agoo in the Netherlands.
I like it when you are anticipating it and it still hits you real hard...
It's my first time hearing Spirtbox. Loved it!❤
This song is amazing! Love Spiritbox
Ultraviolet is ethereal, please react to that next!
I loved the entire EP, Spiritbox is coming into their own now,.
Phillip Nathaniel Freeman!!!!! Nice to see your face man! And here of all places, I couldn't be happier.
I'm SOOOO excited to hear you guys dig into this one!
Would love to see your reaction to "The Mara Effect" (live at Silverside). Also, "Trust Fall" doesn't get enough love. :)
Pleeeease do her one take of Circle with Me!! You’d see her vocal skills up close and unfiltered that way!!
The whole album is exceptional. I loved every song from it.
I love the way you describe sound, it’s spot on.
You guys do such a great analytical deep dive I feel like people might enjoy watching you just quite react to the entire song and then go back through and dissect it bit by bit. just a thought :)
Yesssss Ive been waiting for a video about any one of the 3 songs they released.
Cellar Door is an absolute heavy hitter, Jaded has heavy Architects influence in the best way possible and The Void is a melodic bop with some really strong instrumental influence from The Contortionist.
That was amazing. Beautiful voice. Clean and harsh both.
I saw her live last year opening for Ghost and she sounds even better live!
Phil's Voice is just one of my absolute favorites!
You guys would love Periphery. They've been doing pop vocals on heavy for a BIT now
I love a punchy song like this that bounces around. It just gives and gives! Great review!
I’d really love to see you react to another AC/DC song. Specifically back in black but the studio version. Not only was it Brian Johnson’s introduction song but It’ll really show you just how capable Brian Johnson was in his prime
I dunno if this was mentioned during the premiere, but the songs so far all bleed into each other. They just put out a song Cellar Door which precedes this track and the ending of that one blends seamlessly into Jaded and I expect the same will happen when the third song is released.
EP Track list is 1. Cellar door 2. Jaded 3. Too close/too late 4. Angel Eyes 5. The void 6. Ultraviolet. The Void, which they first released before Cellar Door and Jaded, did not flow into anything. So the next one they release, if they do, might not flow into anything.
@@rachelsmithkey9191 We havent heard Too Close/Too Late yet, unless you found a leak of the EP that I haven't heard yet. Assuming you haven't and considering that Cellar Door flows into Jaded and how Jaded ends, i'm willing to bet that it flows into Too Close/Too Late. I also bet that Angel Eyes will flow into Void which will flow into Ultraviolet. The end of Void clearly sounds like it leads into another song.
@@Kreiger81 Oh yeah the whole EP will transition into each song as it plays through. I thought you meant the next song released will transition back into Cellar Door or Jaded, of the ones already released.
@@rachelsmithkey9191 Ohhhh Yeah, no. i meant originally it would flow from end to end. Thanks letting me clarify.
Some of my most treasured and favourite songs that I would love to see
Toe - goodbye
Modest mouse - float on
Ceramic animal - modern blues
Nothing's carved in stone - milestone
Toe z f_a_r
Dogleg - fox
The temper trap - love lost
Murder by death - spring break 1899
The producer/engineer for all of Spiritbox's music since about 2018 has been Daniel Braunstein. He's a phenomenal engineer who got his start in another amazing band called Volumes. :)
